Older version of ITunes

2009-10-18 Thread Kristeen Hughes
Does anyone have an older version of ITunes? They worked so well. I am

accidentally restoring the defaults. I remember with the first version of

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Hi. Neil Ewers did a thorough description of the Olympus DS-50 on

Audible but since I never used them when I had my DS-50, I am only certain
about the lefthand button.

Hello,

Regarding my Olympus DS50, Although I really
like the DS50 for voice recordings, I seldom use it and have
forgotten the specific uses of the three buttons which
appear as a bar below the screen, the center of which is
elevated. I do recall that one sets a bookmark, and the one
to the left sets a sort of recall location which causes the
DS50 to repeat a designated portion of a file. But, I don't
recall the specifics. Can you please refresh my memory?

Thanks much.

Don, I agree, that the manual should deal more thoroughly
with importing
books from Studio Recorder especially in that APH develops
them both.

I may not do a podcast, but I may have time at some point,
to write a list
of things one needs to do in order to do this. It really
isn't all that
difficult once you figure it out, but you do not get much
help from the

I'll see if I
can make time at some point. If you're on skype, perhaps we
can talk this

Hello Neal,

I am writing in the hope that you will consider doing a
quick and dirty
podcast concerning the proper procedure to follow to make a
daisy book from
existing mp3 or wav files, especially if recorded using
Studio Recorder.

For some reason, I am having difficulty grasping the
concepts in the BWP
docs, primarily because the docs try to make a one size fits
all approach.
I think that recording from existing audio files should not
be combined with
the instructions pertaining to microphone recording.
I would appreciate your thoughts on this subject.

Thanks for all of your contributions in the past.

Cordially,

Not the place to say it I guess, but I've heard ITunes can be far too smart

With DRM out of the way now I'm still stuck on seeing just what the point of
ITunes is these days,. Still, what would I know, not frequenting the ITunes

If they don't have any computer skills, what kind of interface would
you have them use? Telephone and voice recognition? Do you want the
ability to cue music to be local or remote? Will the playback be over
local audio device or Internet-streamed? Will the end user be blind
or sighted?

There used to be a device the size of one rack space whose name I
forget which was ideal for this very purpose. The Windows or Linux
server shared an XML file with titles of streamable material and
streamed it to the aforementioned device. The device itself was
Linux-based and there was loose talk about adding speech capability to
the interface, but unfortunately the hardware stopped being made and
supported, hence, so did the software.

There is a package from oddsock.org that will do what you want, but it
takes a good level of computer skill to set it up at the
broadcast/streaming end, and definitely a computer with a browser to
select the material from the user end. Go to http://www.oddsock.org
and see if it's still there and maybe it might meet your needs.

Re pricing, may have been answered already, from Pat Ferguson the units are

And, Of course, with this new unit, the recorder can be charged via the USB

Useful information and thoughts on the Olympus recorders there Tim, so
 thanks.

My interest in these recorders is as a relatively affordable portable
 recorder
for blind people doing audio journalism-type recordings for talking
 newspapers
and audio magazines. There is sufficient voice guidance now to make this
 a
far more reliable and practical job than with much less accessible
 recorders.

the Plextor may come into it's own where a bit more dynamic range is
 needed
and some music of limited dynamic range could be recorded too with it.

That leaves us with recorders of the calibre of the Sony PMCD50 - hope
 I've
got it's model number right - for live music and high quality sound
 gathering.
While it's not really accessible we're told by Neal Ewers it is usable.

that would seem to me to be the main choices open to us just now. Others
could add in the Edirol R09h and the new Zoom recorder and there are
 podcasts
kicking about covering these too. Let's hope someone reviews the Olympus
 DM
 series soon.

 Tim Noonan wrote:
Going from the functionality in the Olympus DS71, which has adjustable

settings, accessed by pressing the left and right arrows while in record

sensitivity settings on the side of the machine. The volume limiter (anti
clipping facility is disabled when recording is set to manual volume
 levels.

I haven't tested extensively, but while I think the voice capture of the
DS-71 is extraordinarily good, for full spectrum recording, there is a lot
more background hiss during silent passages and it seems somewhat limited
frequency response, than one would expect for a wave recorder.

I deduce from the promotional material, that the DM-550 will be a
 reasonable
step up in actual recording quality, above and beyond the quality of the
 DS-71.

That all said, for recording meetings and small conferences, the clarity
 of
voice recordings and memos is second to none on the DS71, and its
 fantastic
form-factor, in-built speaker and battery life.

I'm not convinced the DM-550's recording quality will equal the Plextalk
Pocket, and am certain it will be nowhere near the Zoom and Edirol units.

Disclaimer, this email is in part based on my direct experience and a few
 educated guesses.

You could connect any kind of recorder, (either digital or tape) to the
headphone jack on your amp. Use this method if you like the sound from the
headphone jack on the amp. Just be sure to use the line or aux input on the
recorder. You could use the microphone input if no line input was available
but would have to be sure the output level of the amp was very low in that
case and you would risk extra noise and distortion.

You could connect any kind of recorder, (either digital or tape) to the
headphone jack on your amp. Use this method if you like the sound from
the headphone jack on the amp. Just be sure to use the line or aux input
on the recorder. You could use the microphone input if no line input was
available but would have to be sure the output level of the amp was very
low in that case and you would risk extra noise and distortion.

hi guys, I'm wondering, what would be the best solution for recording
through my 20 watt practice AMP?.

I have my Yamaha musical keyboard connected to this Amplifier. through
one of the Amps inputs. The Amplifier has a second input for an external
source. It also has an ear phone socket, and a Microphone socket.

What I would like to know is, what would be the best way for me to record
my keyboarde performances. Something like a tape recorder connected to
the Amp, or maybe some kinda digirtal Source?.

How would you achieve this task?,

Re: Creating A Podcast: Use Sound Forge 7 or Gold Wave?

2009-10-18 Thread Dane trethowan
If you're happy with what you're using then by all means use it, both
programmes are very good however, my personal preference these days
out of the two is Goldwave, its got a very feature rich command set,
manual is extremely detailed, accessible and well laid out and so on.
The author has gone to quite a bit of trouble to make this software
accessible and it detects if a Screen Reading package is running, an
excellent value for money product and I think its still under $50.00,
a steal.

Another package you might consider for your Podcasting is Total
Recorder, again another piece of software which is very accessible and
has a very rich set of commands and features, many of which you'll
find on my expensive audio editing applications, go for the Total
Recorder Professional edition which has the very nice editor.

If you want to do things with open source software then perhaps try
Audacity, was very nice when I last tried it on the PC.

2009-10-18 Thread Andy

Hi Michael.

Personally I use Goldwave, but SF is perhaps the more professional and
flexible program.

I really don't think it matters too much which you use, unless you intend to
do some really fancy recording stuff.

If all you are talking about is recording the pure sound of trains, then
it's a matter of which recorder, rather than which Digital Editor you
choose.

Loads of us love the sounds of steam trains, passengers and day trips by
train. I have an Olympus DS50 and a pair of BSM Binaural microphones and
the sound quality is actually very good.

Okay, I need to convert my file, which is not MP3 into an MP3 file using
goldwave.

but apart from that, my Olympus and Goldwave does the job.

Finally, there is a lot to be said about keeping things as simple and basic
as you can. This, I believe, can be a sign of professionalism. Clarity and
simplicity, that's the answer.

Very best wishes.

Rick, It seems the DM550, a bit more exspensive than the 520, has
 adjustable
recording level. Quite what this means I'm not sure, i.e. it could be in
three or four sensitivity settings, or a continuous control, but not seen
 the
 recorder so don't know.

Worth re-reiterating the Plextor Pocket has meters so you can actually
 monitor
record level; doubt the Olypus DM550 can do that, but then no doubt you'd
 get
 acustomed to using it.

Subject: Creating A Podcast: Use Sound Forge 7 or Gold Wave?

Hi everyone,

My name is Michael and I am 17 years old. I'm totally blind,
and I make audio recordings of trains. I am interested in
putting a podcast together but I am not too sure how to do it
or what software programs to use. I currently have SoundForge
7.0 on my computer, and it does everything I want it to. Well,
just about everything. However, I know that GoldWave is
popular with people who are blind, and I am wondering which
program would be easier for creating a podcast? I am thinking
of putting several of my recordings into this podcast, but I'm
not sure how to put the files together in eather program.

Thanks for any advice,
Michael

Burn Playlist Spanning Multiple CD's

2009-10-18 Thread Rob Armstrong
I have created a playlist in Winamp. I want to randomize (shuffle) the
playlist and then burn it to CD. It will span about 3 CD's.

What software can I use to accomplish this job? I know how to randomize the
playlist. It's the CD burning I need help with.

Rob

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your reply. I currently use an Edirol R09 recorder with 2
Shure PG81 unidirectional mics, and I get good results with it. I am
hopefully getting a Sony PCMD50 later this year, so that should be fun.

What I'm really interested in doing is importing recordings into a file
with my narrations inbetween the tracks.

Thanks again,
Michael

Hi Michael.

Personally I use Goldwave, but SF is perhaps the more professional and
flexible program.

I really don't think it matters too much which you use, unless you intend
to do some really fancy recording stuff.

Finally, there is a lot to be said about keeping things as simple and
basic as you can. This, I believe, can be a sign of professionalism.
Clarity and simplicity, that's the answer.

Very best wishes.
Andy..

For some reason, all of my MP3 files are gone and I am left with some

Anyone know what happened?

Hi. Neil Ewers did a thorough description of the Olympus DS-50 on
BlindCoolTech, so it will be much more authoritative than this: The
leftmost of those three buttons navigates through the folders. The other
two, I think, take you to specific folders, I believe music and perhaps

It really
 isn't all that
difficult once you figure it out, but you do not get much
 help from the
manual. I just had to spend hours in trial and error. So,
 I'll see if I
can make time at some point. If you're on skype, perhaps we
 can talk this
through at a time that works for us.

Thanks for your words of thanks.

 Cordially,

 Don Roberts
