There is a program called GS player which I used frequently when I was a pm

Hi everyone!

I've just acquired one of these machines and for the most part I'm
extremely happy with it though I have 1 question and it concerns audio.

It appears that the Windows Mobile version of Windows Media player
installed on Omni support m3u or pls file types so can anyone suggest an
alternative player or a workaround?

Thanks in Advance and Cheers!

Well, since the advent of the Booksense, I believe several people bought
those when they first came out, and I think when they have RFB&D support for
real after the first of the year, this will help their sales. I think
what's going to hurt Humanware will be when they start charging for some of
the newer features of the Stream. This will turn people off.

Hi Folks:

As far as an all around book reader is concerned, I believe that the Stream
is a much more stable device and has features that the other pocket players
do not have, such as AGC. As a podcast player, it is unsurpassed.

The problem with the stream is, however, that the present hardware
configuration has been pretty well maxed out. I believe, for example, that
the present hardware will not be able to play WMA DRM.

Just some thoughts.

It depends what you want to do. If recording is mainly what you want to do,
then I personally think the pocket is your best bet. I personally like the
ability to decide whether you want to set your recording volume manually,
which can be an asset if you want a really good recording quality, or use
automatic recording levels. Also the pocket has certain automatic recording
settings for environments like conferences, etc.

And it can play material in different formats as well and .txt and html
files at this stage.

But it is quite possible that the sense can play back more files than the
pocket.

Remember all of these devices are updated by firmware updates which can be
downloaded from the manufacturers' websites so what we may discuss as pros

electronic documents or bookshare books, you probably want the
booksense because of the Kate and Paul voices which are much better to
listen to than the synthesizer on the Stream.
The speaker volume is better on the Sense, if this makes any
difference to you.
Navigation is different on the Booksense, but not hard to learn. From
what I've been hearing, the Stream is going to be adding some new
features soon, but you will have to pay to have them.
Hope this is helpful.

Oh the pocket is great as a recorder, but from what I've seen, it's not much
to write home about as a player. I would go with the BookSense. Navigation
is a lot more intuitive than the stream, and you can record in both mp3 and

I would like to see some sort of voice database feature in these

say link a telephone number with an address or a name, I should think
that such a feature would be handy for elderly people who could use
these type of machines - not just for playing books - but as a type of
information manager for basic information, The Victor Reader for example
uses LINUX as its operating system so there's no question about the
power the player has, its just a question of how to design such a system
I outlined.

Hi!

Okay, I don't have a Book Sense but I do have a Victor reader Stream.

One thing I like about the Stream is that all prompts and messages are
recorded in human voice rather than having to rely on a software voice
synthesiser so you won't miss any alerts, prompts or errors which
Victor is trying to communicate to you.

I'm also told that there are some major software upgrades for Victor
coming in the near future, one of which will allow you to store your
recordings in a different format such as wave for transfer straight to
a PC or Mac and that's about time too! and this has been my major
gripe about the player from day one - particularly given that I use a
Mac most of the time and there's no way of converting files from the
Victor's format to something standard with the Mac, this should fix
the problem.

The other slight annoyance I have with the Victor Reader Stream is its
incredibly slow rate of transfer using USB cable and I'd be interested
to hear an explanation from Humanware as to why this is, I can only
hope that transfer speeds are faster on the Book Sense. If you're
prepared to be a little adaptive then the problem can of course be
solved by purchasing a memory card reader but make sure you read the
manual first so you know what goes into what folder on the card, how
to arrange things etc.

Questions about xm online.

2009-11-24 Thread Allison Mervis
Hi everyone!
I recently signed up for xm service, and I'm loving it so far. I just have a
few questions. When you're listening to a station in the xm online player, are
there keyboard shortcuts for play, mute, volume up and down, etc? There are
links for each of these function on the main player page, but they seem to
disappear once you choose a station and start listening. Secondly, is there an
accessible stand-alone application for listening to xm online material? Thanks
so much in advance for any and all assistance.

I believe that some valuable info has been disseminated as a result of this

Ah, sorry about that. I assumed that you were in the Script Manager. Okay,
open up Easy CDDA Extractor. Press Insert-0 which will bring up the Script
Manager and open the associated script file. Chances are good that it will
be empty. Paste the text from David's message into this file and press
Control-S to save and compile the script.

Now, arrow down through the information until you get to the line that says
Script, which is the beginning of the script for locating the button. Now,
press Control-D to bring up the properties for this specific section and tab
until you get to a check box that says something about assigning it to a
hotkey. If this isn't checked, check it. If it is checked, keep tabbing
until you get to an edit box and then press the key combination that you
want to use. Tab to Okay and press Enter. Finally, press Control-S one more
time to save and compile the script and then exit with Alt-F4.

From within Easy CDDA extractor now, press your chosen hotkey and see if it

works. Good luck.

I have a bunch of completely legal CD's that I want to conver to
completely legal MP3's. Each disk is one track, so I don't have to worry
about choosing tracks or anything like that. Has anyone at least gotten,
in Easy CD-DA Extractor 12, the "choose a location" feature to work
correctly? I don't have the fabled version 9, and besides, I want to use
the new extraction engine in 12 to do this. I would use Exact Audio
Copy, but EAC does not like these disks. Anyone have any thoughts?

I've never heard of it until today. Meaning no disrespect, sometimes the
only way to know whether or not a program is accessible is just to start it
up and take it for a spin. Why don't you do that and let us all know what
you think of it? :-)

Just found out about a free audio file converter tool called Super 2008.
Just wondering if anyone has had experience using it and is it accessible?

Thanks.

I can make some educated guesses. When I have time, I will do some
experimenting, and see if it's even possible. I was rather hoping, though,
that somebody else here would already know the answers.

In the meantime, as long as you want to rip an entire disc, and not select
only specific tracks, it is still quite easy to use version 12; though you
will need sighted help if you want to change the default destination for
your ripped tracks. The default destination is C:\My Documents\My Music.
Of course, you can always rip your tracks to there, then cut and paste
them to where you really want them.

I haven't yet investigated the converter component of 12. If it's like
11, there shouldn't be any problem if you trigger the converter from the
Explorer context menu, and use the JAWS cursor to find and trigger the
start button, once you have configured the rest of the conversion dialogue
as you wish.

As many of you may know already, in the ripper component, the track

are neither read nor displayed in braille, as one scrolls the track

much less the check boxes for selecting individual tracks.

Is there a fix for this; or are we still better off downgrading to

2008-08-17 Thread Allison Mervis
Hi everyone!

I'm using sound taxi on an hp pavilion laptop running vista sp1. I've used
it many times before to convert various files, but today, I added a file,
and was told that it was queued for conversion, even though I had set the
program to begin conversions automatically. I waited for it to start for
about ten minutes before shutting down the program. It was the only file in
the queue, so it should have started. I tested several other files from
rhapsody with the same results. I also tried converting to both mp3 and
wave. I can't figure out what the problem might be. If anyone has any
suggestions or ideas, I would really appreciate any and all assistance.
Thanks.

Question about JSonar ssc

2008-05-03 Thread Allison Mervis
Hi everyone!
I was on the JSonar website, and noticed that the latest scripts are for
version six . However, I am getting version seven of Sonar Producer. Will
the scripts written for version six still work with version seven. Thanks.

Accessible software midi keyboard.

2008-04-01 Thread Allison Mervis
Hi everyone!
A long time ago, I had this program which basically allowed me to press
letters on my computer keyboard and hear piano notes. You could change
instruments and even play sound effects. The problem is that I have
absolutely no idea what this program was called. I just remember that it was
extremely accessible, and extremely handy when I needed to give myself a
starting note for a song. If anyone has any idea of what I'm talking about
and knows what this program is called and where I might be able to find it,
please let me know. Thanks so much.

Major problems converting audio and video files

2008-02-06 Thread Allison Mervis
Hi everyone!
I've noticed over the past few weeks that any time I attempt to convert text
or other audio files to mp3, my laptop randomly shuts down in the middle of
the process. When I turn it back on, it goes through a scandisk, and boots
regularly. This is highly irritating, as I'm unable to encode any mp3's on
my system without this happening. I've tried every program I can think of,
including text aloud and DSpeech for text to audio conversion, and goldwave,
switch, easy CDDA audio extractor, and replay converter for conversion from
one audio format to another. The same problem occurs whenever I try to
convert mpg video files to ogg vorbis either with goldwave or replay
converter. I am completely stumped as to the cause or solution for this
problem. Any assistance which anyone could offer would be greatly
appreciated.

I want to create a sound scheme, and I realize that I could just manually

would like to package the scheme for easy installation on any computer. What

Allison,
Sounds like a job for a good bulk renamer! I use a freeware utility called
Lupas
Rename that works wonders! Point it to the directory where the files are
located, go to the
auto-number tab' and specify that the number should be placed before the
filename. You should be able
to find it or a similar program at most popular download cites.

problem with zen stone

2007-06-13 Thread Allison Mervis
Hi all!
I loaded the fifth Harry Potter book onto my Zen stone, and turned it on,
only to find that the book started playing in the middle. Advancing backward
and forward through the files, I noticed that they weren't really playing in
sequential order. I know I don't have the player set to shuffle mode, and
I'm wondering what could be wrong. I checked the folder on the Zen stone,
and they're displaying in the correct order. It's 384 parts. Could that be a
problem? I'm at a loss. Thanks!

Battery life of the zen stone

2007-06-12 Thread Allison Mervis
Hi all!
I don't feel as though I'm getting the full ten hours of battery life out of
my zen stone. I just got it on Thursday, and since initially chaarging it
after it's arrival, I've had to charge it two more times. I wonder whether
or not I'm doing something wrong when I turn it off. When turning off my
shuffle, I always paused playback and slid the switch to the off position.
With the zen stone, I simply hold down the play button until it appears to
power down. I don't pause playyback first. Could this keep it from shutting
down entirely, and therefore, be the cause of my rapidly draining battery?
Thanks!

Ok, what version of sound Taxi was this. That was exactly the same problem
I had when I installed it on my Sony desktop and not even the system restore
saved my but because it also trashed something with my cdrom drives. That
was a long long time ago however and the Sound Taxi support people claim
they fixed that a couple of builds after the version I tried. Just curious
if your experience was before their fix or after. (grin)

I had an interesting problem with sound taxi platnum. When I installed it,
it took away both my sound cards. I had to get sighted help to do a system
restore. On an older motherboard, when I managed to run ST Platnum, I
noticed it installed a sound driver of it's own. But, on this new
motherboard I found it didn't seem to like my sound cards or something,
since it disabled both of them completely to the point that neither showed
when I brought up sounds and audio from the control pannel.

Well, even if an audio book was a 1 gig protected wma file, (and I don't
think even war and peace would be that huge) the wav file would take up ten
gigs, and I usually have thirty or more free on my local hard drive at any

Allison,

Is there any way to tell sound Taxi to use constant bit rate (cbr) instead

Thanks. That's a good idea, but wouldn't that take up a huge amount of space
if I was converting, say, an eight hour long audio book?

problem with sound taxi.

2007-06-07 Thread Allison Mervis
Hi all!
I managed to get sound taxi installed on my system and registered without
any major mishaps. However, when I played back a song which I had converted,
I noticed that it skipped. It's a song from rhapsody, and I was converting
from the original wma format to a 192K (they called it 190 K) mp3 file. Is
there anything I can do to keep this from happening? I bought this program,
and I really like it for the most part, but I need it to function reliably.
Thanks!

Hi Rick!
It turns out I was just being impatient. This is nothing new. Lol. You need
to hold down the play button for about three seconds during, and then wait
ten to fifteen seconds for it to start playing the file.

Allison,

This is just a shot in the dark, but after reading a review of the Zen
Stone, I recall there is a switch that you have to use to put the player in
folder navigation mode. I am thinking that you may have to use this mode to
navigate to your music folder and then press what ever button makes a
selection to go into the folder.

I don't have a Zen Stone, so like I said this is just a shot in the dark
based on what I read. I'd be interested to know whether that worked or not.

Hi all!
I received my creative Zen stone today, plugged it in, deleted the sample
tracks from the music folder, and pasted in some mp3 files of an audio book.

I waited until the player was charged, plugged in the headphones, and held
down the play button for one second. I heard a little popping sound which
told me that the player had powered up, but no other sound. I tried pushing
all sides of the wheel, thinking that the volume might just be too low. I
assume that the portion of the wheel with the little dot on it is volume up.

What could I be doing wrong? Should I have put the files in the route of the

player instead of in the music folder? Any assistance would be greatly
appreciated.

But with the Zen stone, you don't have to use annoying transfer software.
You can just copy and paste from windows explorer.

Indeed it will, although I've found that goldwave gives one more precise

problem burning DVD's

2007-04-06 Thread Allison Mervis
Hi all!
I usually use DVD Shrink 3.2 in conjunction with Nero 7 and the latest version
of Any dDVD to burn DVD's. However, the last two times I've tried to rip a dvd
with DVD shrink, I get the following error message.
DVD Shrink 3.2
DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.graphic 683 Failed to read
file "D:\"
Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.
OK
What could be wrong? Is there any other software out there that works? I've
already tried DVD decryptor, and I don't like it much. It never rips the DVD to
a size which will fit onto a blank. Thanks!

I disagree with you about Windows Media. I feel it is the least
palatable of all the player options out there. As for CD's, you are
quite correct and there's no disputing you there.

Here's podcast 01 I did on Replay AV 8.03. They are not
professionally done but should help those who do not own Replay
AV 8.03. I use JAWS 8 here. I also have to mention that my voice
was too loud on these recordings. Best I can do.
To download the file to your PC do a right mouse click on the

problems with golden ear podcatcher

2007-01-05 Thread Allison Mervis
Hi all!
I'm running the Golden Ear podcatcher on a public computer off of my thumb
drive, and I'm having some problems. When I paste a url into the edit box and
press the add subscription button, my new subscription doesn't show up in the
list. I also can't import any of my old subscriptions because they're stored in
an opml file, and golden ear only accepts sub files. Is there a way to convert
an opml file to sub format? Thanks!

questions regarding total recorder.

2006-12-28 Thread Allison Mervis
Hi all!
I'm curious about total recorder, but I have some concerns. It's my
understanding that it installs drivers which may or may not interfere with the
performance of Jaws. I've also been told that these drivers can be disabled,
and was wondering if there was a way to insure the stability of jaws while
still electing to use the drivers provided by total recorder. I know a lot of
people who swear by this program, and was wondering whether or not any of you
think that it measures up to other programs like goldwave, sound forge, and
audacity. Thanks!

it should auto configure that kind of stuff when you install it.
have you uninstalled the bit torrent client? it may be using that

US Official: AllofMP3 Must Shut Down
By Ed Oswald,
BetaNews
October 5, 2006, 11:43 AM

The United States is continuing to pressure Russia to shut down the
music site allofmp3.com,
with a top trade official saying Wednesday it would be hard to see
the country being
a member of the WTO with the site still operating in the country.

Calls for AllofMP3's demise are again surfacing as the two countries
attempt to restart
negotiations for Russia to enter the international trade group. Talks
stalled in
July after persistent disagreements related to agriculture and
intellectual property
issues.

Representatives from both Russia and the U.S. will meet in Geneva,
Switzerland next
week with a goal of having an agreement by the end of this month.
However, it is
likely a non-negotiable stipulation of the talks will be the shutting
down of the
music site.

AllofMP3 claims it has licenses from Russian Multimedia and Internet
Society (ROMS)
and the Rightholders Federation for Collective Copyright Management
of Works Used
Interactively (FAIR).

However, neither the U.S. nor Britain recognize those licenses, and
the British music
industry sued the site in July. Joining the WTO has been a publicly
stated goal of Russian President Putin,
and he has begun to talk about intellectual property rights issues in
the country
recently.

"The dialogue is continuing. We're making progress slowly but
steadily and we'll
see if we can get there," US Trade Representative Susan Schwab was
quoted by Reuters
as saying to reporters. "There's no guarantee that we'll get it done."

Allison, have you tried pressing the right mouse key instead of the enter
