FM transmitters

2005-12-19 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
I know FM transmitters have been discussed on the list before, but I don't
recall seeing anyone mention the V5000 from MobileBlackBox.com. It claims
to have a range of 150 feet and sports multiple power supplies, USB,
batteries, car adapters, The direct URL is
http://mobileblackbox.com/content/view/31/54/.

Does anyone have any experience with this unit? How does it compare with
the FM transmitter from C. Crane?

Re: launchcast radio and the my station

2005-12-28 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
I tried to sign up for this service with no luck. They guard against bots
by presenting an image and prompting you to type in the code you see in
the image. They have an alternative where you can just type "email" in
the edit box instead of the code presented in the image, and the rest of
the sign up procedure will be done via email. I did this, but never got
any email back. I submitted a problem report, but again, I got no
response. Does anyone know if this service is still active? The home
page seems to be updated frequently. BTW, it looks promising, both from
the amount of content that seems to be available and the attention to
accessibility.

Re: launchcast radio and the my station

2005-12-28 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
I'm not sure how it works since I've yet to get an email response. My
understanding is that there's more to it than just typing "email" in the
edit box. My understanding is that this then kicks off a procedure where
an email is sent and replied to, similar to the verification procedure
used when signing up for some mailing lists. Of course, a bot could
automate all of this and work around this safe guard, but I'm sure bots
could also use OCR to grab the text in the image too.

So now all yahoo stuff lets you put in email for the code thingy? The
trouble is that provides them no bot protection at all, a bot, when
programmed, could put the word email in the box too.

RE: boot camp, read everyone

2006-04-07 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
I assumed this was something like VMWare, where you could run Windows and
OS X simultaneously, but after looking more closely it appears to be more
of a dual boot option. I guess it's for the family or someone who wants
to be able to run OS X some of the time and Windows XP at other times.
Maybe it'll help people transition from Windows to OS X. I'm assuming a
Mac will cost you a bit more than a PC for the same performance, both
running windows, so I wouldn't think people would be running out to buy
Macs so they could run Windows on it, especially when you'll have to pay
for Windows.

As far as VoiceOver is concerned, I assume it would run under OS X, but it
wouldn't give you any access to Windows, since according to what I'm
reading, OS X and VoiceOver won't be running if you boot up into Windows.

Please understand that these are just my assumptions based on a very
cursory glance at the information. Anyone more knowledge is encouraged to
correct anything I've said here!

I am wondering if you are going to run Windows on the MAC why do you want

More and more people are buying and loving Macs. To make this choice

Mac

system
on your Mac. Called Boot Camp (for now), you can download a public beta
today.

As elegant as it gets

Boot Camp lets you install Windows XP without moving your Mac data, though
you will need to bring your own copy to the table, as Apple Computer does
not sell or support Microsoft Windows.(1) Boot Camp will burn a CD of all
the required drivers for Windows so you don't have to scrounge around the
Internet looking for them.

Once you've completed Boot Camp, simply hold down the option key at

longtime Windows users.) After starting up, your Mac runs Windows

2005-01-04 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
I've got to wonder what the value add of such a one word reply is even if
the original note was attached. I've got to admit, I'd just as soon not
see it. ditto on the request for files as well. I'm not sure why such
requests cannot be taken off list and sent directly to the sender. I'm
guessing, based on other notes on different mailing lists, that finding
the originators e-mail address must not be so easy with the different mail

I can see I'm going to have to do a bit of research on this, but I was
under the impression that the iPod shuffle was a flash memory based MP3

issues about the iPod Shuffle is that it has no display, making some
wonder how successful it'll be. I assume this means that at least playing
the iPod Shuffle should be fairly accessible. What I don't understand is
how this makes it so different from say the Creative MuVo which is a flash
memory based MP3 player without a display that costs around $80. the MuVo
is also nice because you don't need any proprietary software to copy music
to it. You just plug it into your computer's USB port, and it shows up as
a removeable drive. You can then use Windows Explorer to move MP3's,
WMA's, ..., over to it. Of course, you could also just use it to transfer
files from system to system.

Re: Apple Ipod Shuffle accessible?

Hi Steve
I'd love to, believe me man. But I saw the price on it and I was like oh
man it sure would be nice to get something so nice for so cheap.
Unfortunately, all the other players, at least that I've seen, are around
$300 to $350 and I just can't afford something like that at the moment.
Ah,
I guess i've just gotta save up those coins.

Re: Instant Messenger and speech

2005-02-20 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
I don't use AIM much, but from what I can tell the latest version should
be fine. It detects whether you've got a screen reader installed or not,
and customizes itself a bit for easier use by someone using a screen
reader. Like I said, I'm no expert, but it looks like it turns off some
of the inaccessible features, like news feeds and the like.

Hi list. I want to install AOL Instant Messenger and need to know:
Which version works best with JFW?
They are all available from
www.oldversion.com
Does anyone have a suggestion? The older versions are often easier to use
as they are not loaded up with graphics and needless optional features
that
play havoc with speech output. Thanks for your help.

Re: MP3 flash player recommendations

2005-04-19 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
I don't know if they still make it or not, but I have a compact flash MuVo
from Creative Labs. I got it a year or two ago. It has 256M of flash
space. It has no display, so it's obviously quite accessible. It also
doesn't come with or need any PC software to transfer the files to the
MuVo. You just use Windows Explorer to copy files to the drive.

I haven't been keeping up with things lately, but it sounds a lot like the
iPod to me, except you don't need to use any special software on the PC. I
must be missing something, but everything I've heard of the iPod doesn't
set it apart from the MuVo that I've got. Maybe the MuVo I've got isn't
made any more or maybe the iPod is just a lot cheaper for more memory.

Re: MP3 flash player recommendations

Let me try to clarify. If I understand MP3 players, there are two basic
types of storage: one uses flash memory with no moving parts; the other
uses a hard drive which spins just like a computer hard drive and holds
greater amounts of storage. I thought the Archos players were of the
second type. They may well have flash memory for holding the operating
system but audio file storage is on the spinning drive. I am interested
in
the first type with storage in flash memory. Does this type of player
still utilize the Rock Box software?
And, I would still like any and all recommendations on what flash based
players are more accessible. Thanks.

question about replay converter

Hi all!
I just got my copy of replay converter, and I'm having a slight problem. I

set some ogg files to convert to 64 kbps mp3 files. The conversion went
off
without a hitch, so I went and listened to one of the files in Winamp.
Noticing that the file didn't sound as clear as it should have, I checked
the file info box, only to find that Replay converter had in fact only
converted my file at 32 KBPS instead of 64, which is what I had
specifically
selected. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? Thanks!
Allison

Re: major sound problem

2006-06-25 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
I had a similar problem once. It was probably over kill, but I ended up
reinstalling my sound card drivers to fix it. Once I did, I discovered a
volume control in my sound card driver, which probably would have fixed
the problem for me in the first place. Have you looked around for a
volume control in your Sound Blaster software or driver?

RE: problem with windows media player.

2004-06-22 Thread Christopher J chaltain
for my part, and I'm new to all of this, I'm running Winamp 5.03a, Windows
XP and Windows Media Player 9. I never had to do anything special to get
Winamp to play .wma files. I could just bring them up in winamp with the
l or shift-l keys or once I told winamp to associate itself with all of my
audio files, I could just click on the .wma files and they'd play in
winamp just fine.

Michael,
Yes, that's what I have, forgot to say so, smile. i've never had much
luck
with Windows Media Player, guess I need to try testing it with another
stream to see if it is working at all. But my question really was whether
it is possible to play WMA files through Winamp as the default player or
whether to just accept that Media Player will grab them. In any case, as
I
said, I can play the smaller file just fine as long as I allow it to log
onto the website but not the other one which is supposedly just tied to
the
player, does that make sense? I must be missing something.

What application are you in when you hear that sound? I wonder if maybe

I tried Media Monkey quite a while ago, and it was almost accessible with JFW.
I had to use the JAWS cursor a lot, and consequently, the screen was hard to
