Victor Reader Stream or Book Cents
Hello guys, I've listened to reviews on both the book cents and victor stream. What kinds of things should I consider when looking at getting either one or the other? I want to be able to play NLS, Recording For the Blind books and MP3s among other things. The book cents is getting the RFB and D Support. What other things should I consider when looking at these 2 machines? How is the response time between the 2? Any problems with the 2 machines? Can you record in wave format and stereo? What's the speed compression like?? Can you speed up music and books on both machines if you want? Thank you guys for any feedback. Re: NLS digital player and multiple books
Jason, The only way I've figured out how to work with that issue is to put all the contents of a book's folder on to the root directory of the flashcard or root directory of a thumbdrive. You can only listen to one book at a time, but those NLS players don't like multiple books on one card. They also don't like sub folders. Hope that helps. soft synths
Hi guys, Have you guys tried the software versions of the Prophit 5, Minimoog or CS-80? How accessible are the software synths? I'm using window-eyes 7.11. For a sighted user, the software synth recreates the front pannel of the hardware synthesizer on the screen. You can twiddle with the knobs and switches on the screen. So instead of paying thousands of dollars for an older synth, for maybe $200 you can get a software version of that synthesizer. I own a Minimoog model D synth and it sounds great, but if I could have access to some software synths, that would open up a whole new world for me. Just curious. Re: Fixing damaged CDs
Hi listers, Thanks for that good article. I find that dishwashing soap and warm or hot water works best. I've had some of my cds for over 20 years and I've had to wash them off occasionally because of scratches. Deffinitly playing them in alternate cd players helps a lot. A big problem that I had 20 years ago I think was that I had one cd player and even when you washed off the cd correctly, that player would still find the mistake. Sometimes, you just have to buy a replacement because cleaning and playing in alternate players doesn't help. A good used cd record store is a good place to look for used cds, or even half.com. Hey there, When ever you convert from mp3 to wave and back again, you'll lose something in the process. You might not here the loss but it's there. Even with programs like mp3 direct cut you still lose something. I know they say you don't because you're directly editing the mp3 but you are because the program still has to decompress and recompress that file. The only format where you won't lose something is working with wave files. Hi Brandon, Sounds like that broadcasting school doesn't want to deal with you. Yes you can do it. Although when I did it 4 years ago the college couldn't afford the expensive software that the commercial stations were using. We still used cds, mini disks and some carts. I brailled up all the cds and brailled out all the public service anouncements I read. If they're not willing to buy the equipment, see if they'll let you braille up any cds they have. It also depends on what computer software they're using and if it works with Jfw or window-eyes. There's a way to get experience at a basic level. Keep bugging them. gold wave vs sound forge
Hi guys, Right now I use a basic sound editor called Fast Edit. I find it useful for doing what I need to get done. When I bought it about 3 years ago, I wanted something I'd used before and I didn't want to learn a whole new program. I've looked at goldwave and sure it's much more powerful with effects, de-popping records, batch conversion to any formats, that kind of thing. I just reversed a wave file and converted it to an mp3. The 2 practical uses of this that I could see would be first if you have a twisted cassette and you couldn't get it untwisted. Just reverse part of the file that's backwards on the tape and you'd be able to listen to it just fine. The other use I can see for reversing parts of a file would be to have clean versions of rap songs. You reverse the curse words. That's if you couldn't get a hold of the radio edit. regarding Fast Edit
Hi Tate and list, Fast Edit runs about $200 US. The only thing with this program that is kind of annoying is that you can't access how to turn stuff down or slow stuff down because they forgot to put negative numbers in the character set. Usually there was an edit box to type how far you wanted things to go down. The slider isn't accessible to do this in Window-eyes. You can read about it and download a free demo at http://www.minnetonkaaudio.com/fastedit/fastEdit.html If you have any questions, please email me. Good luck. recording batches of wave files
Hi guys, I'm looking for a program that will record a few files at set times. For example if you have file 1 start at 6:00 AM and file 2 start at 7:00 Am, do you know of any good programs that will do this? It needs to be xp compatible and service pac 2 compliant. I've tried auto-recorder and that works ok. The problem is that you lose one minute of audio for every hour you record. In other words, at 59 minutes past the hour, you need to stop the program from recording and let it save the hour long file. I'd also like to find a program where you could go to let's say 59 minutes and 59 seconds and then at the next second, a new file is created. Any suggestions? cd or tape master problem?
Hi guys, I've got an interesting problem. How can you tell if a cd is scratched or if a glitch is caused by the tape master that was used to make the cd? For example the tape master that was used for the Phil Collins cd No Jacket Required has several problems with it. On the song One More Night, on the last verse, there's a little bit of tape drop out on one of the channels through that final verse. They actually went back on his new love songs collection and went to the 2 inch multi track tape to get a better sounding mix. On the song Inside Out, there's a pop on the tape between one of the drum fills between the verse and chorus. I know these 2 examples are caused by the tape master, because I've heard the same glitches on the radio. The cd Chicago 18, at the end of Will You Still Love me, there's a slight glitch near the end. Is there a way to tell for sure if it's the album tape master or my copy without buying a new cd? recording 4 track tapes
Hi curtis and list, When recording a 4 track cassette such as with nls or recording for the blind, remember that when working with a standard tape player, the sides are a little bit different than on the special tape players that are issued. You have sides 1 and 4 on the first side and sides 2 and 3 on the second side. Sides 3 and 4 will play backwards on the right side of the tape. That can be easily reversed in an audio editor. Also it is easy to slow the audio to it's propper speed Talk to you later. Denny - Original Message - From: "Curtis Delzer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. Re: converting from and to mp3
Sarah and list, When converting a file from mp3 to wav, you'll only get the quality of the mp3. Let's say your mp3 is at 128 bit rate. You won't be able to get the quality up to 256 or 320. When you convert the wav back to mp3, you can convert it at a higher bit rate but the sound quality will always be that of the original mp3 which was a 128 in this example. When you're finished editing your wave file and convert it back to mp3, the sound won't be any worse than what you started with. When I make cds I always keep everything as wave files because one time I went from mp3 directly to a music cd and the results didn't turn out so good. When that same mp3 was converted to wav then burned, no glitches in the file. Joanne and list, If you make a back-up data cd, the cd should play all the different file formats that you have. I'd convert the wav files to mp3s just so you have more room on the cd. When you're done burning the cd, the computer will treat the cd as another permanent floppy if you will just much bigger. one more thing about vorbis
Hi again, The other thing I was going to mention is that if I send somebody a .ogg file would they open it? Or would they just delete it. If they don't know me, let's say I'm emailing out aircheck tapes of myself for a radio job, I would say somebody would be more likely to open an mp3 file than a .ogg simply because mp3 files are more recognizable. Just my thoughts. Denny ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: VORBIS COMPARED TO MP3
Kevin and list, I've been doing some testing with the vorbis versus mp3 conversion last night. With mp3s, you can go down to 96kbps and you start to hear the compression. Knock it down to 80 and it sounds really compressed. With Ogg-vorbis, you can knock it down to 80kbps and start to hear a little compression, but it's not nearly as bad as it is on the mp3 side of things. Because of how the different formats compress, ogg-vorbis compresses things much further than mp3s and it still sounds good. It's kind of like the difference between vhs and bayta formats. As I remember it, bayta was a superior format but the recorders kept breaking down and vhs was the format that was more popular. I can remember going in to video stores in the early to mid 80s and seeing vhs tapes and a much smaller section for bayta. Hope that helps. Re: Odd question
Hi list, As far as the tv goes, the way you'd hook anything to it would be through the coe-ax cable connection at the back. Like Rob said, get a converter from Radioshack. I know Radioshack carries them because we had to get one a couple of years ago to hook up our dvd player. My wife got this particular tv in like 95 or so. The converter is a little box that plugs in to the coe-ax in the back and on the box itself you've got a few RCA outlets. Hope that helps. Re: VORBIS COMPARED TO MP3
Hi Shannon and list, I know for sure that winamp will read the ogg-vorbis files, I don't know about any portable players. Denny ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: VORBIS COMPARED TO MP3
As far as I can tell, vorbis rocks compared to mp3 files. That's when you put vorbis at a 128 bitrate. Of course, I don't mind having mp3 files at 320 but at 128 ogg vorbis files sound great. Although nothing compares to a wave file. any free vorbis encoders
Hi guys, I have a program called Win-lame that encodes mp3s and ogg vorbis. The problem is that I don't care for the interface, because you have to set the settings each time rather then having presets. I'm used to Razorlame as my mp3 encoder. Is there a good free ogg vorbis to wave converter out there besides gold wave? Thanks. lame encoder
Hi guys, Here's a link to get the Lame Mp3 Encoder if you need the program. http://mitiok.free.fr/lame-3.96.1.zip It's only 600K. Denny ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: eliminating gaps in recording music cds
Hi Chrissie and list, Here's how to get rid of the gaps between the tracks. Go to the file menu in Easy CD creator. go to the record cd dialogue. When you get there, there's an option that probably says track at once which is a T for future reference. This is a strange option because to access it you hit the letters when you're on the option rather then checking a box. So when you get there, you'll probably see t for track at once. This puts a 2 second gap between the tracks. You want to hit I for disk at once. This still puts your cd in to tracks, you now won't have the gaps between the tracks. The difference is that for the disk at once option, the laser doesn't stop burning during the recording procedure. With the track at once option turned on it stops recording for 2 seconds before burning the next track, thus causing the 2 second gap. Hope that helps. Re: mp3 direct cut
Hi guys, I looked at the program and I can't undo my edits by hitting control z. I honestly don't think this program is for me. I enjoy working with wave files and I can make mp3s with an encoder I've got. Had this been around 2 or 3 years ago with my first computer with a tiny 4 gb hardrive, I might have considered it. Re: Read and write audio cassettes on a pc
John and list, That was an interesting article. I'm one of those guys that has many 45s and 12 inch singles. Of course I've got cds too. The frequency response on the records is incredible. That's providing you keep the records in mint condition. I get requests from friends for certain songs such as Maroon 5, as well as older artists. I record the 45s on to the computer, and put them on cds for them. Yes, current songs are still available on vinyl. As for the tapes, if you were able to get the metal ones, those sounded really good. Talk to you guys later. Re: converting files
Frank, There's a really good mp3 conversion called Razprlame. The problem is that you have to go to tow different places on the net. One to get the program and the other to get the engine that makes it work. Email me off list and I can email you the program with everything in it. The program's free too which is good. It's only about 527 K zipped. Re: while ripping or burning?
Steve and list, I know that with burning cds at least I have all other programs closed. If you're ripping, it shouldn't matter. I'm not sure why that is. gold wave response
Hello Bruck and list, I'm used to both markers landing expctly where you need them. If they're slightly off, I can zoom in with Fast edit and go back or forward. With Goldwave on that second marker or ending marker, you get the previous 2 or 3 seconds, then it stops right where the mark is. It's really irritating. The beginning marker in Goldwave lands where you want it to and I can hear it fine. Press the space bar and you can hear where the first mark is. The second one is the pain in the but. good sound editors
Hi guys, I'm new to the list and was wondering what you all preferred as far as sound editors went? I use Fast Edit which does a decent job of editing wave files. Goldwave is more powerful in many aspects but, I don't care for the way that when you put your final editing mark down, you can't hear exactly where it lands. What do you all think?
