Re: Question about LS-14 digital recorder
Hello John, When you start replaying a file, the default state of the ring, is 12 o'clock is volume up, 6 o;'clock is volume down. 9 and 3, are back and forward through the files on the recorder. While playing a file, press the enter key, the key in the middle of the ring, once, then the up and down positions on the dial act as increase speed 12 o'clock, decrease speed 6 o'clock. Pressint the enter after this, takes you back to the default action which is volume up and down. If you do nothing, having made a playback speed change, the control defaults back to volume. What I don't know, is how to get playback back to normal, apart from using my ears. I suspect that if the recorder is turned off, then it reverts back to standard playback speed. I think there about 23 or 24 steps from slowest to fastest speed. Hope this helps. On Sun, 12 Nov 2017 10:32:38 -0500 "JOHN RIEHL" <realma...@verizon.net> wrote: > Hi. press control p for prefferences. go down to media library plug ins. remove the on-line services plug in. That should fix it. Re: A Mac computer for audio work
Dane, thanks for a most informative post. SOmething I have been interested in for years now. Sadly, My Mac Mini, which has been on the shelf probably for too long, is the model before the one of which you speak so eloquently. Cheers, and have a good day. Joe On Sun, 13 Nov 2016 10:25:45 +1100 Dane Trethowan <grtd...@internode.on.net> wrote: Hi! I've been prompted to write something on this topic due to the number of private emails I've received over the last couple of hours, we've been discussing Exact Audio Copy and CD rippers and it seems that my mention of the Mac and XLD has stimulated some interest so here goes. I'm going to discuss the Mac from an audio viewpoint as much as is possible here. So what Mac should you buy? Well obviously that's up to you but I warn you now! a Mac is going to cut deeply into your budget if you're after the latest and - when it comes to audio - the latest may not always be the best and you'll see why I say this as you read on. So the latest Mac is expensive thus a great turnoff for anyone wanting to buy one but who said you had to have the latest Mac? You don't and who said you needed a Mac with its own built-in screen? Well, you don't but it is advisable that you have a Mac connected to some sort of modern day monitor at the very least for the Mac to function correctly so this narrows our field down quite considerably to the Mac Mini. I've never been a fan of the latest Mac Mini models as the Specs aren't all that good for the technology you pay for so let's take ourselves back in time exactly fours to late 2012 when Apple released possibly the finest Mac Mini machine ever built though -given the quality of build and the high specs of the late 2012 Mac Mini you'll pay a bit of a price for one if you can still get one -. These machines featured an Intel I7 Quad Core Processor in the top model with 16GB of RAM. The Late 2012 Mac Mini was the last to boast separate analogue/digital audio in and out, the latter models now having one socket for both, an absolute pain in the but. 4 USB 3.0 ports are a welcome addition along with the Thunderbolt port which can be used for just about everything from a display to extra USB ports, sound devices, high performance hard drives and so on. I like the built-in HDMI port so - given its size - the Mac Mini could be a very welcome edition to a Home Theater/multi media setup. Going wireless is part and parcel of the Mac mini with its 2.4/5.0GHZ built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity. Storage isn't a problem here either and nor is performance with the 1.2TB fusion drive packed into the metal housing and - with all those USB and other ports? - Well adding hard drives is second nature. The lack of a DVD drive might be a nuisance to some but what are all those uSB ports for if you an't gonna use em? Might as well get an external DVD drive, place it on top of your Mac Mini and plug-in. I run both Mac OSX Sierra and Windows 10 on my Mac Mini thanks to VMware Fusion. So why do I really like the Mac for audio work? Because its far easier to separate and work with all your audio sources, you don't have the conflicts between say software speech and capturing streams on the Mac as you often encounter when recording with Windows but I'm not going to turn this post into a complicated ramble. I've pasted a link to a review of the late 2012 Mac Mini below. Your local Apple Store may know where you can get one of these particular machines, thankfully I knew someone who had one which had hardly ever been used so I snapped it up some time ago and I know a couple of other people who have found them on eBay but as time goes on they're becoming a little more difficult to find and the price is going up. http://au.pcmag.com/apple-mac-mini-late-2012/5809/review/apple-mac-mini-late-2012 -- ** “Oh, I’m an activist and I’m OK / I sleep all night and I tweet all day.” -- Joe Paton <j...@vi-ability.demon.co.uk>

Yes the interface is prone to change this is for sure. Furthermore, access has always required a lot of mouse-pad work. Yes 50 dollars is a price, but it's for the life of the product. Or so he says. I can view the log files in the second tab page. Today I discovered that, like an idiot, I'd forgotten a rule I set earlier this year to send pc audio messages to my Delete folder (I was in the hospital for a while and recovering from surgery). I've now deleted that rule and would like to repost my question. Here's what I want to do: I want to take a snippet of audio from one file in Goldwave and paste it into the middle of another file I've brought up in Goldwave. I can mark the sound I want to paste using the bracket keys; I copy it into the clipboard, move to the other file and try to paste it into the file at the spot where I want it to be. (I've listened to the file and stop it where I want to insert the sound). Whenever I try this, GoldWave puts the audio snippet at the beginning of the file, not where I want it. I've tried marking, copying and moving the snippit but with no luck. How do I take part of one file and add it to another file at a specific location? You would use a batch converter to achieve this, once you know which paramaters you need to change to make these files play on the device, which, at this time they don't. Re: audio input device or phono preamp with USB port
Hello André The first option looks favourable. You could use the analogue input and output for other devices if you so needed to once you have finished with the transcription of your vinyl. If any of the devices are maines powered, be sure to check for any hum loops or other extraneous interfeerence. The little Roland pre-amp I am using here, is beautifully quiet. Either that, or i'm deaf and it doesn't matter anyway. But it has analogues in, with manual gain on the audio channel. Headphone socket for monitoring if you need it. Good Luck, and enjoy those hours ahead of real-time transcription. I used dell in my example. Next you could argue, hell, why waiste my time. You could use the default card for screen reader, then a second card for your audio. I made the asumption that you want to do more than just replay high quality audio. So in either case Larry, creative audigie do a usb card, with controls onboard. I tended to think of a PCI audigie card, forgetting about the usb offerings. good luck, and good listening. It just isn't a very sound environment IMHO, not like my old Audigy, which was both dependable, and at times, down right amazing as a reproducer of pure audio. I'll admit that my demands are small, since I only use my sound card for listening to audio streams, and mp3 files, but very little in the way of actual recording. Re: Possible Recommendations for a good USB sound card please
Hi Larry, With the correct creative drivers, you should end up with audio that you are happy to listen to. My only concern with creative, is the difficulty accessing the creative labs control pannel. That sed, on-board controls, gain sellection, ballance and so on, are a real benefit for me in the way that I work. Of course all this is subjective. but I like the roland, and a couple of other outboard devices. I have a midiman audio interface, works fabulously on xp, but they didn't write drivers for windows 7 and above. This is a shame, because it's a nice interface, if I had the skills I would write my own drivers, but I don't so it's hyperthetical. Good Luck anyway larry. Re: Possible Recommendations for a good USB sound card please
Hi Larry, The stumbling block may be the requirement for accessible software along with the device. I am running a Roland Duo Capture external usb card here. It's easy to set up, it works with the windows mixer, so you don't need preparietory software. There are hard controls on the front pannel, 2 quarter inch jack sockets, with XLR capability. This takes a stereo feed from my mixer, but it might not have enough inputs for you I don't know. A Nice card though. then there is Focusrite's Scarlett range which provides a choice of USB audio interfaces to cater for any scenario. You might need to talk to a local dealer about these, but the advantage is that they have good Mic pre-amps, plus line-in sockets. Sorry this is so sketchy. Would like to have a card with all the appropriate line inputs and outputs, and with the quality of an audigy, or maybe even better, if that is indeed possible for a good price. And just as a bonus, I would like to be able to access the software that comes with it using Window-Eyes. The only reason I am asking about a USB card is because I don't want to have to install a regular card. Re: questions about microsoft sound mapper
Mike, This is my understanding. Microsoft sound mapper, is microsoft's interface to the default audio device. So on this system I have 2 audio devices, If I set the tascam as the default device, I can either use the tascam driver, or, Microsoft sound mapper which in turn talks to the tascam device. If I then change the default device to for example, Creative audigi, then Microsoft sound mapper talks to that device. I could be wrong, so try it, and take these words with a pinch of salt. Joe On Sat, 6 Jun 2015 10:12:26 -0400 Mike Bernard mbern6...@aol.com wrote: Could someone please explain in plain english, what exactly is the microsoft sound mapper? Up until a couple days ago, I've discovered that within my list of output devices within my screen reader, among certain other programs, (you know, the list where you can choose which soundcard you want to use for certain things, there's something called microsoft sound mapper. What does this (sound mapper) thing do? Is it a soundcard? During my radio show a couple nights ago, I had an emergency, and therefore, had to fire up nvda to use as a backup screen reader. Like I said, I only found out about microsoft sound mapper a couple days ago, and so this is also when I found out that nvda was using sound mapper for it's sound output. So I'm wondering, when you tell your screen reader and/or media player to use sound mapper for its output, especially when you're in a broadcasting situation, can listeners hear it? and what about the computer sounds that we all hear everyday, such as the windows startup and shutdown sounds, skype sounds and that ding ding sound that windows 7 and 8.1 makes to indicate that a download has completed. Where do those sounds come from? Mike Rochester, NY. -- Joe Paton j...@vi-ability.demon.co.uk

Re: GoldWave's Go To Feature
Hi Danny, When you have placed the marker as robert advises, then if you press shift with left bracket, you will hear some audio up to the start marker position. It may be that your play 1 setting, is set to all rather than selected, or view. If you press control with the left bracket, you will hear from the start marker onwards. The same is true of the shift-right bracket, which plays a small piece of audio up to the finish marker, and control right bracket from the finish marker onward. I'm no expert, but hope this helps. Re: Coppiing music from my brother's IPod?
Hello carliss ,Assuming that you already have an itunes account established on your computer, Try this. Hold down the Shift key while you open iTunes. In the dialog that appears, click Create Library. Name and save the alternate library file. iTunes opens with your new library file. Open iTunes Preferences. Click the Advanced tab. Deselect the Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library checkbox if it is already selected and click OK. This will prevent iTunes from creating duplicates of your existing media files in the new library folder. Add the specific media files you want on your device to iTunes choosing File Add File to Library or Add Folder to Library After you organize the iTunes library, connect and sync your device. After the sync is complete, quit iTunes. Hope this helps. Re: I Must Be Doing Something Wrong Here!
Hello Tom, Although te web extract, below, may help to explain how this stuff works, I doubt it will solve your problem. So for your information, here it is. I have not formatted the data below, jus located, cut and pasted the info. I at least found it interesting. CDDB1 identifies CDs with a 32-bit number, usually displayed as a hexadecimal number containing 8 digits: XXZZ. The first two digits (labeled XX) represent a checksum based on the starting times of each track on the CD, mod 255. The next four digits () represent the total time of the CD in seconds from the start of the first track to the end of the last track. The last two digits (ZZ) represent the number of tracks on the CD. For example, suppose a CD contains a single track of duration 3610 seconds. First the XX checksum is calculated by summing the track starting times mod 255. Since CDs have a 2-second offset from the start of disc data, XX becomes 02. Second, the total CD play duration of 3610 seconds in hexadecimal is 0e1a, so becomes 0e1a. Finally, there is one track on this CD so ZZ becomes 01. The full disc ID of the example CD is 020e1a01. Any CD which contains one track with a duration of 3610 seconds starting 2 seconds from the beginning of the CD will have this disc ID. To distinguish between different CDs which happen to have the same disc ID, the CDDB1 database is organized into multiple categories. If there is a conflict with different CD releases possessing the same CDDB1 ID, they can be placed in a different category (such as classical, rock, blues, folk or misc). Re: Pioneer XW-SMA3 Wireless Music System
Thanks Dane, Nice little review. Cheers, Joe On Tue, 10 Jun 2014 21:29:23 +1000 Dane Trethowan grtd...@internode.on.net wrote: Hi! I received this in the Pioneer XW-SMA3 in the mail, ordered it last Thursday so delivery was speedy and perhaps its just as well, the last thing anyone should indure is the sense of suspense over a prolonged period of time, as it happens we've just come out of a Long weekend - Monday was a Public Holiday which meant no mail deliveries which was unfortunate as I may have received the System even sooner but that's all by the by, I've had time to play with the Wireless System so time to fill you all in. I have the sister unit to the XW-SMA3 which is the XW-SMA1 and if you know how to use the XW-SMA1 then you'll know how the XW-SMA3 works but there are still differences between the 2 models. Firstly the XW-SMA3 has an internal rechargeable battery built-in and is designed to be used everywhere from the kitchen counter bench top to the outdoor setting at a barbecue, the large rubber dust covers on the rear covering the various sockets and terminals testify to that, the SMA1 doesn't have these covers and nor does it have the rechargeable battery, the SMA1 is designed specifically form bench tops, bookshelves and the like though both units do have carry handles so they can be easily moved. From here on I'll be referring to the XW-SMA3 though all the text will apply to both the XW-SMa1 and XW-SMA3 models. The XM-SMA3 is incredibly versatile allowing input of audio for playback from a wide variety of sources: Connect the XW-SMA3 directly via its line-in socket to a line-out socket from another device Connect your IOS device - using its charging cable - directly to the USB port on the XW-SMA3 which allows for full control of your IOS device as well as Digital Audio playback and battery charging. Stream to the XW-SMA3 using Airplay from iTunes, your Computer, from an IOS device etc, you can stream directly to the XW-SMA3 using its own Wi-Fi network or stream to the XW-SMA3 through your own Wi-Fi network, this means that - whether you're at home or away camping - you'll be able to enjoy the good quality sound the XW-SMA3 offers. Integrate the XW-SMA3 into your Home Network as a DLNA device, Windows and Windows Media will automatically see the XW-SMA3 and play audio content through it. You can also use Windows Explorer to select your audio content for playback through the XW-SMA3 and so on. The XW-SMA3 comes with a simple but yet functional remote controller, my only annoyance about the controller is its size - no not too big but a little to small -. Thankfully the unit can be controlled using buttons on the front should the remote controller unit be lost. You can control power status, volume, skip between tracks, select sources and play/pause, the controls seem well chosen and are pretty much what most people would want from a Media Player. Volume is pleasing, not incredibly loud but loud enough without distortion, a good bass response, pleasant mid range and acceptable highs. The XW-SMA3 is further enhanced by the use of the IOS/Android Pioneer Controller App which brings Internet Radio, Spotify, Pandora and so forth directly to the player, , the App requires some labeling of buttons but is fully accessible once that's done. Are there any better Wireless Media Systems out there? When it comes to audio then yes there are, the Soundlink Air sounds quite a bit better than the Pioneer XW-SMA3 and both units are portable though the Bose system is nearly twice the price of the Pioneer and - even then - the rechargeable battery is an extra option. Given the price tag of the Pioneer - around $250 - I would certainly look at this system first, even though the Bose Soundlink Air does sound better the Pioneer XW-SMA3 has very acceptable audio quality and will suit most people in most situations. ** Dane Trethowan Skype: grtdane12 Phone US (213) 438-9741 Phone U.K. 01245 79 0598 Phone Australia (03) 9005 8589 Mobile: +61400494862 faceTime +61400494862 Fax +61397437954 Twitter: @grtdane -- Joe Paton j...@vi-ability.demon.co.uk

Re: Sound card recommendation wanted
Hi, I aggree that on-board sound systems can be pretty good. Comparisons between different sound cards, if supported by specifications are invaluable. If not, then an element of subjectivity takes us in to an area where opinions are only really valuable to the holder of these opinions. So here are some of my opinions. I used to be happy with my audiofile 24/96. There were occasional problems with crackle on one channel, this would go away if the system were rebooted. I suspect that this was a driver issue, but never really got behind the problem. I used this card with XP, and more recently windows 7. The control pannel, delivered with the latest revision of the drivers became unusable with a screen reader, However when set up, the card behaved well enough, considering that the price also has dropped from the time when I first bought mine, some 8 years ago. Still a good card, and gave good latency when used with Reeper. Then I changed the computer, and bought a Dell optiplex, I5 processor, 8 GB ram, and 1 TB HD. The onboard audio device, a real tek High definition audio system, is quite frankly, the worst audio device I have ever worked with. Dell's control pannel, is partly accessible, but it is hit and miss when changing settings. There are settings in the control pannel, that are not exposed to the windows mixer, so you have to use it. I couldn't use the audiofile 24/96 because the optiplex uses PCIE slots only. The audiofile, is available only as a PCI board, and although there are converters from PCIe to PCI, the profile of the 24/96 excludes it from this adaption so this sound card is now in an older dell, which will run only as long as the capacitors hold out on the board, and they are blowing so life is limited. This is why I am now looking to use the audio interfaces from tascam. I already have a US-122-A B but this device has no windows 7 drivers. shame. So I am looking at the current tascam range, similar to the device I already own, and this replacement should cost about 80 UK pounds. Then we should be good to go as they say.
