Re: Question about LS-14 digital recorder

2017-11-12 Thread Joe Paton
Hello John,

When you start replaying a file, the default state of the ring, is 12
o'clock is volume up, 6 o;'clock is volume down. 9 and 3, are back and
forward through the files on the recorder.

While playing a file, press the enter key, the key in the middle of the
ring, once, then the up and down positions on the dial act as increase
speed 12 o'clock, decrease speed 6 o'clock. Pressint the enter after
this, takes you back to the default action which is volume up and down.
If you do nothing, having made a playback speed change, the control
defaults back to volume. What I don't know, is how to get playback back
to normal, apart from using my ears. I suspect that if the recorder is
turned off, then it reverts back to standard playback speed.

I think there about 23 or 24 steps from slowest to fastest speed.

Hope this helps.

go down to media library plug ins.

remove the on-line services plug in.

That should fix it.

I'm not sure that this is the exact plug in, but there are 16 loaded at

Re: A Mac computer for audio work

2016-11-13 Thread Joe Paton
Dane,

thanks for a most informative post. SOmething I have been
interested in for years now. Sadly, My Mac Mini, which has been
on the shelf probably for too long, is the model before the one
of which you speak so eloquently.

Cheers, and have a good day.

Dane Trethowan <grtd...@internode.on.net> wrote:

Hi!

I've been prompted to write something on this topic due to the number of
private emails I've received over the last couple of hours, we've been
discussing Exact Audio Copy and CD rippers and it seems that my mention of the
Mac and XLD has stimulated some interest so here goes.

I'm going to discuss the Mac from an audio viewpoint as much as is possible
here.

So what Mac should you buy? Well obviously that's up to you but I warn you now!
a Mac is going to cut deeply into your budget if you're after the latest and -
when it comes to audio - the latest may not always be the best and you'll see
why I say this as you read on.

So the latest Mac is expensive thus a great turnoff for anyone wanting to buy
one but who said you had to have the latest Mac? You don't and who said you
needed a Mac with its own built-in screen? Well, you don't but it is advisable
that you have a Mac connected to some sort of modern day monitor at the very
least for the Mac to function correctly so this narrows our field down quite
considerably to the Mac Mini.

I've never been a fan of the latest Mac Mini models as the Specs aren't all
that good for the technology you pay for so let's take ourselves back in time
exactly fours to late 2012 when Apple released possibly the finest Mac Mini
machine ever built though -given the quality of build and the high specs of the
late 2012 Mac Mini you'll pay a bit of a price for one if you can still get one
-.

These machines featured an Intel I7 Quad Core Processor in the top model with
16GB of RAM.

The Late 2012 Mac Mini was the last to boast separate analogue/digital audio in
and out, the latter models now having one socket for both, an absolute pain in
the but.

4 USB 3.0 ports are a welcome addition along with the Thunderbolt port which
can be used for just about everything from a display to extra USB ports, sound
devices, high performance hard drives and so on.

I like the built-in HDMI port so - given its size - the Mac Mini could be a
very welcome edition to a Home Theater/multi media setup.

Going wireless is part and parcel of the Mac mini with its 2.4/5.0GHZ built-in
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity.

Storage isn't a problem here either and nor is performance with the 1.2TB
fusion drive packed into the metal housing and - with all those USB and other
ports? - Well adding hard drives is second nature.

The lack of a DVD drive might be a nuisance to some but what are all those uSB
ports for if you an't gonna use em? Might as well get an external DVD drive,
place it on top of your Mac Mini and plug-in.

I run both Mac OSX Sierra and Windows 10 on my Mac Mini thanks to VMware Fusion.

So why do I really like the Mac for audio work? Because its far easier to
separate and work with all your audio sources, you don't have the conflicts
between say software speech and capturing streams on the Mac as you often
encounter when recording with Windows but I'm not going to turn this post into
a complicated ramble.

I've pasted a link to a review of the late 2012 Mac Mini below. Your local
Apple Store may know where you can get one of these particular machines,
thankfully I knew someone who had one which had hardly ever been used so I
snapped it up some time ago and I know a couple of other people who have found
them on eBay but as time goes on they're becoming a little more difficult to
find and the price is going up.

Re[2]: using exact audio copy, or another program to convert cd's to flac

2016-11-12 Thread Joe Paton
Yes the interface is prone to change this is for sure.

Furthermore, access has always required a lot of mouse-pad work. Yes 50
dollars is a price, but it's for the life of the product. Or so he says. I can
view the log files in the second tab page.

I have no interest as to who uses which program, only that pitfalls
encountered, explained and worked around can help us
all, and merely to give as broad a view as possible within my
verry limited understanding.

It's strange but true, a particular set of users will have no
issues with a product, while others may find access almost
impossible.

So it is 1 big hurrah for exact audio copy.

Have a great day.

Joe

What annoys me about this software is that it keeps changing all the time.

When ripping CD'S now the user has no way of knowing just how accurately EZ has
done or what errors it came across, the author of the software has - for
whatever reason - removed the ability to log EZ Converters actions.

Apart from that - assuming it works correctly which we can't say for sure now -
its a good bundle given its only $49 however Exact Audio Copy is free and -
given a little setting up and tweaking - provides good and accurate rips all
the time and you'll have the log file to prove it .

Regarding file converters? Well that's not a huge problem as all the
encoders/decoders can be easily obtained and Exactly Audio Copy - if you'd
prefer - can be configured to convert from format to format but Ez CD Converter
is very convenient for that sort of thing.

The other reason I'd use Exact Audio Copy if at all possible is that its just
plain far better when it comes to accessibility than Ez CD Converter ever has
been.

Re: Replacementfor Winamp

2016-11-10 Thread Joe Paton
andy,

if you press alt-w that hould put the main winamp window on top.

next, press left alt, arrow down one time to winamp, then arrow
right. Go down the menue items, and press enter on anything
which is checked, to de-select it.

Don't worry about the options menu branch at this time.

go past that, when you arrive at Exit, you have done the lot.

you are particularly interested in de-selecting library.

continue back down the list, and when you get to
skins, it is a drop down. Right arrow in to this branch, and
look for "classic." press enter on classic.

Now to get the winamp main window, press alt-w.

If you get stuck, You can write me off list.

or: cons...@apart.org

good luck.

Here's what I want to do:

I want to take a snippet of audio from one file in Goldwave and paste it
into the middle of another file I've brought up in Goldwave. I can mark the
sound I want to paste using the bracket keys; I copy it into the clipboard,
move to the other file and try to paste it into the file at the spot where I
want it to be. (I've listened to the file and stop it where I want to insert
the sound).

Whenever I try this, GoldWave puts the audio snippet at the beginning of
the file, not where I want it. I've tried marking, copying and moving the
snippit but with no luck. How do I take part of one file and add it to
another file at a specific location?

Thanks for the help and I apologize for reposting this message.

Check out the sampling rate, and bit-rate.

Then check the player, and see if the player has support for the current

2016-03-29 Thread Joe Paton
Hello André

The first option looks favourable.

You could use the analogue input and output for other devices if you so needed
to once you have finished with the transcription of your vinyl.

If any of the devices are maines powered, be sure to check for any hum loops or
other extraneous interfeerence.

The little Roland pre-amp I am using here, is beautifully quiet. Either that,
or i'm deaf and it doesn't matter anyway. But it has analogues in, with manual
gain on the audio channel.
Headphone socket for monitoring if you need it.

Good Luck, and enjoy those hours ahead of real-time transcription.

Hi Chris,

yes they do. www.turtlebeach.com
whether the included software is accessible, is not clear. But I reckon they
are still good devices.

Hi Larry,

On this dell optiplex, there is a default sound card, which is a real tek..

Now here's the interesting thing.

The windows mixer, offers limited access to all the controls on the card.
Further, these controls can be accessed, using an app called "dell audio."
This opens up all the card's controls. It is not accessible by three screen
readers, but I suspect that screen mignification users may have a little
more opportunity.

Next, the version of drivers, either provided by Dell, or Real Tek. Certain
drivers, do nott offer the range of controls in the default installation,
but
also these drivers leave the card in a flatter audio state, with no extra
audio
effects turned on.

So what I am thinking, is, that it might be possible to turn off the effects
that you don't want, either by the driver file itself, or, access to the
control pannel installed by the computer manufacturer. I used dell in my
example.

Next you could argue, hell, why waiste my time. You could use the default
card
for screen reader, then a second card for your audio. I made the asumption
that you want to do more than just replay high quality audio. So in either
case
Larry, creative audigie do a usb card, with controls onboard. I tended to
think of a PCI audigie card, forgetting about the usb offerings.

good luck, and good listening.

Re: Possible Recommendations for a good USB sound card please

2016-03-03 Thread Joe Paton
Hi Larry,

With the correct creative drivers, you should end up with audio that you are
happy to listen to.

My only concern with creative, is the difficulty accessing the creative labs
control pannel. That sed, on-board controls, gain sellection, ballance and so
on, are a real benefit for me in the way that I work. Of course all this is
subjective. but I like the roland, and a couple of other outboard devices.

I have a midiman audio interface, works fabulously on xp, but they didn't write
drivers for windows 7 and above. This is a shame, because it's a nice
interface, if I had the skills I would write my own drivers, but I don't so
it's hyperthetical.

Good Luck anyway larry.

Re: Possible Recommendations for a good USB sound card please

2016-03-01 Thread Joe Paton
Hi Larry,

The stumbling block may be the requirement for accessible software along with
the device.

I am running a Roland Duo Capture external usb card here. It's easy to set up,
it works with the windows mixer, so you don't need preparietory software.
There are hard controls on the front pannel, 2 quarter inch jack sockets, with
XLR
capability.

This takes a stereo feed from my mixer, but it might not have enough inputs for
you I don't know.

A Nice card though.

then there is
Focusrite's Scarlett range which provides a choice of USB audio interfaces to
cater for any scenario.

You might need to talk to a local dealer about these, but the advantage is that
they have good Mic pre-amps, plus line-in sockets.

Sorry this is so sketchy.

At present, and most likely for the foreseeable future, I will continue to be

Would like to have a card with all the appropriate line inputs and outputs, and

The only reason I am asking about a USB card is because I don't want to have to

Of course, I am primarily acquainted with Creative Lab cards, but any

Sound bars are usually bought proportionally to the size of your TV. for
example, if you have a 40 inch TV, you want to buy something closed to the size
of the TV. then you have to decide if you want a sub woofer which can be wired
or connected with bluetooth. they can be put in a corner or behind an easy
chair.

I have a Vizzio TV so I bought a Vizzio soundbar so the TV remote controls the
soundbar as well. a lot of times if you have a different brand of TV, different
than the soundbar you bought, you have to mute the speaker in the television
or you get an echo.

that is some of the things to consider.

1. go to the view menu. arrow down to auto scroll-lock, if not checked check it

the shortcut is control-l.

Now your arrow keys will move in acordance with the zoom ratio.

You might want to set up what the playback keys do,

hope it is simple as this.

Wouldn't change to sound forge, unless what you want it to do, it will do

Mike,

This is my understanding. Microsoft sound mapper, is microsoft's interface to
the default audio device. So on this system I have 2 audio devices, If I set
the tascam as the default device, I can either use the tascam driver, or,
Microsoft
sound mapper which in turn talks to the tascam device. If I then change the
default device to for example, Creative audigi, then Microsoft sound mapper
talks to that device.

I could be wrong, so try it, and take these words with a pinch of salt.

2. applications key, then arrow down to new. press enter.

3. On the select pluggin list, select the one you want, in this case, mp3and
mp3 pro.

4. use your mouse pointer, or jaws cursor, at the bottom of the screen are an OK
and Cancel buttons.

Select the ok button and activate with a left mouse-click.
5. Now you should be on the converter page, where you select the correct
settings for the host stream. tab once, on the choose format button, and hit
the space-bar. focus is on a list of configurations, the top is untitled.

You can of course arrow through the options, cd quality, radio quality,
telephone quality, and so on. If you have a pre-configured instance, it will
have the name that you selected when you configured that item. In this case, I
have one called ride radio.

You tab passed the save as, and make changes acordingly.

Hope this is of some use.

Joe

 Mike,

 here's what I do.

 Start the sam encoders.

press the application key, and select new ins.
If you have an encoder set already, and focus is on that one, select
 config.

If you are on a new instance, then as you have done, select mp3 and mp3
 pro.
Then after hitting the ok button, You should be in a converter window,
which is one of three.the other tabs are server details and stream

If you don't see these tab controls, then something may be wrong with the
 installation.

Did you enter the authorization key or whatever they call it in sam?

There are also some PC audio related topics which are specifically

 include:

 * requests for songs or other audio files * promotion of audio streams
except for occasional announcements of special events * advertising

subscribed very long!

Guidelines.

PC-audio is a list for the discussion of any PC audio related topic
such as PC audio software like sound editors, audio players and audio
formats; and hardware like sound cards, CD and DVD devices and so on.

While the subject matter is wide ranging, this is not a forum for the
discussion of non-pc-audio matters. There are many other lists for
political or other discussions.

There are also some PC audio related topics which are specifically
excluded from the allowable topics. The explicitly prohibited topics
include:

* requests for songs or other audio files * promotion of audio streams
except for occasional announcements of special events * advertising
audio products and service Willfully posting an off-topic message is
strictly prohibited. While it may be considered that one or two
messages that are off topic can't hurt, if everyone on a large list
like this took that approach, we would quickly descend into chaos.
Asking for replies to be sent privately makes no difference.

Some examples of off-topic messages include:

* Virus alerts * Jokes and humor * Advertising items for sale * Test
messages * Non-audio software and hardware

Vulgar language, name calling and other types of flames are strictly
prohibited.

Sometimes a message thread starts with a clearly defined purpose, but
as the discussion develops the subject matter can change. If this
happens, you should take the initiative and change the subject line to
better reflect the subject matter of the thread.

Some people pay by time or volume when they use the Internet. For this
reason, please take care when quoting messages that you're replying
to.

Ideally, keep just enough of the previous message to remind
subscribers about the message to which you're replying, and no more.
Otherwise, one quickly finds a few lines of new text at the beginning
of a message followed by screen after screen of old messages.

If you believe that any of these rules are not being followed, do not
raise this as an issue on the list. Write to the group owner at
pc-audio-ow...@pc-audio.org and express your concern. If you raise
these matters on the group itself, it will generate considerable
off-topic traffic and bad feeling. There is only one moderator. Please
do not post messages asking that a thread stop or accusing someone on
the list of being off topic.

The moderator of the list has the right to remove or restrict anyone
from being able to post to the group as a result of not adhering to
the stated rules.

If you disagree with any of these rules, please unsubscribe now by
sending a message to pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org If you do not
unsubscribe, this is taken as an acceptance by you that you will abide
by the rules as outlined.

To post to this list, send your email to:

  pc-audio@pc-audio.org

You can also make such adjustments via email by sending a message to:

with the word `help' in the subject or body (don't include the
quotes), and you will get back a message with instructions.

You must know your password to change your options (including changing
the password, itself) or to unsubscribe. It is:

Normally, Mailman will remind you of your pc-audio.org mailing list
passwords once every month, although you can disable this if you
prefer. This reminder will also include instructions on how to
unsubscribe or change your account options. There is also a button on
your options page that will email your current password to you.

Hello! I have had this problem before, and it all had to do with the type of
CD drive I was using. When I used my HP laptop, several CDS simply could not
be read, so I could not rip any tracks from them. Now I'm using a Dell.
Recently I tried to rip tracks from the problematic CDS, and was successful in

Good Morning

A while ago I decided to scrap all my music CD’s and store them onto my
computer. I now play music either from my PC or via various portable players. I
no longer posses a disc Walkman and very few CD players, relying mostly on my
PC. I never share any of my music it’s entirely for my own enjoyment.

As I’m a jazz fan my wife, a few years ago, bought me a collection from Time
Life of 12 double disc album called Classic Jazz. They are wonderful and a joy
to play but, unfortunately, can not be played in the PC. This just will not
recognise them which means I cannot move them into the PC memory with the other
music. I have always thought this was because of some DRM protection but I
tried again today and I'm wondering it it’s for another reason. I wonder if i’s
because of the format or type of sic used.

would this be possible? If so does anyone have any ideas as to how I can
overcome it, please?

Many thanks Roger

Re: GoldWave's Go To Feature

2015-03-31 Thread Joe Paton
Hi Danny,

When you have placed the marker as robert advises, then if you press shift with
left bracket, you will hear some audio up to the start marker position. It may
be that your play 1 setting, is set to all rather than selected, or view. If
you press control with the left bracket, you will hear from the start marker
onwards.

The same is true of the shift-right bracket, which plays a small piece of audio
up to the finish marker, and control right bracket from the finish marker
onward.

I'm no expert, but hope this helps.

Docuscan plus is not a scanner. It is an in the cloud scanning program
that costs 300 bucks, and you still need a scanner with it. Given the
uncertain state of serotek and the fact that this is all done in the
cloud, I would not personally touch that program with a 10-ft pole at
this time. The opticbook 3800 is a good bookedge scanner. If you mostly
want to scan books, that's a good one. But you will still need an
accessible piece of software to go with it. Abbyy Fine Reader pro for
Windows is said to be accessible, although I have no personal
experience with it. The software that comes with the opticbook scanners
is worthless from an accessibility point of view. You can try a free
demo of the above-mentioned docuscan plus to see if it meets your
needs, as you can try a demo of abbyy FR pro, which costs less and
gives you way more control, and more languages, than docuscan. There is
also k1000 and Openbook, but those programs cost considerably more;
they offer many more features and are designed for the blind. So if
that's your cup of tea, then go for it. K1000 just released version 14
with the latest versions of the engines from abbyy and scansoft.

 Hi all,

Recently there was some discussion about TapinRadio crashing for some
 people on the list.

I mentioned that I had solved this problem by uninstalling my anti-virus
program which is ESET Smart Security version 8, updating TapinRadio with
the latest station presets and then re-installing ESET Smart Security.

Since then I've found that every time I update the station presets in
TapinRadio with my anti-virus program installed I get the problem other
people have reported with an error similar to web downloader not
responding. So I have actually uninstalled my anti-virus program,
updated the TapinRadio presets and then reinstalled ESET Smart Security
 for a second time.

After the second installation of ESET Smart Security I went into the
options of TapinRadio and turned off the option to check for new station
 listings automatically.

Since I've turned this option off I haven't had any problems with
TapinRadio crashing. However while I can now listen to stations on
TapinRadio I can't update the presets for fear of TapinRadio crashing
 again.

I'm using Windows 7 32-bit with all important Windows Updates installed.

I hope a solution to this problem can be found for those of us who are
 getting the crashes in TapinRadio.

 Regards Steve.

Re: Simple Voice Recorder Suggestion

2014-10-20 Thread Joe Paton
Hi Samuel,

Olympus change their models as often as they change their financial
advisers.

The DM range appear to offer the speech system.

I can make further enquiries if you would like.

I have 2 DM units here, cost about 150 when new. But should be able to
locate one easily enough if the asking price is a little high at retail,
then second hand would suffice.

The RNIB carry the Olympus range, well some of them, the cheaper items
do not have the speech offering, and you need to run olympus software.
With the DM range, they connect just as an external drive, with an
assigned drive letter.

CDEX will put track number and name and title or what ever you want.
What do you mean it puts it in computer.
I'm now changed to CDEX now that winamp won't get titles from Gracenote.

Thanks Walter; seems like every CD Ripper has it's good and bad points!
This MP3 Ripper seems to be good; only thing so far I don't like is that it
puts things in computer...so far, don't know if there's any way to change
this or not! But it _is_ ripping with the information: number of track,
title and artist; am still baffled as to why CDEX won't do this for me!
Again...many thanks!

Re: Coppiing music from my brother's IPod?

2014-06-25 Thread Joe Paton
Hello carliss
,Assuming that you already have an itunes account established on your
computer,

Try this.

Hold down the Shift key while you open iTunes.
In the dialog that appears, click Create Library.
Name and save the alternate library file. iTunes opens with your new
library file.
Open iTunes Preferences.
Click the Advanced tab.
Deselect the Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library
checkbox
if it is already selected and click OK. This will prevent iTunes from creating
duplicates
of your existing media files in the new library folder.

Add the specific media files you want on your device to iTunes choosing
File Add File to Library or Add Folder to
Library

After you organize the iTunes library, connect and sync your device.
After the sync is complete, quit iTunes.

Hope this helps.

Re: I Must Be Doing Something Wrong Here!

2014-06-24 Thread Joe Paton
Hello Tom,

Although te web extract, below, may help to explain how this stuff works,
I doubt it will solve your problem.

So for your information, here it is.
I have not formatted the data below, jus located, cut and pasted the
info.

I at least found it interesting.

CDDB1 identifies CDs with a 32-bit number, usually displayed as a hexadecimal
number
containing 8 digits: XXZZ. The first two digits (labeled XX) represent a
checksum
based on the starting times of each track on the CD, mod 255. The next four
digits
() represent the total time of the CD in seconds from the start of the first
track to the end of the last track. The last two digits (ZZ) represent the
number
of tracks on the CD.
For example, suppose a CD contains a single track of duration 3610 seconds.
First the XX checksum is calculated by summing the track starting times mod 255.
Since CDs have a 2-second offset from the start of disc data, XX becomes 02.
Second, the total CD play duration of 3610 seconds in hexadecimal is 0e1a, so

becomes 0e1a.
Finally, there is one track on this CD so ZZ becomes 01.
The full disc ID of the example CD is 020e1a01. Any CD which contains one
track
with a duration of 3610 seconds starting 2 seconds from the beginning of the CD
will
have this disc ID. To distinguish between different CDs which happen to have the
same disc ID, the CDDB1 database is organized into multiple categories. If there
is a conflict with different CD releases possessing the same CDDB1 ID, they can
be
placed in a different category (such as classical, rock, blues, folk or misc).

Nice little review.

Hi!

I received this in the Pioneer XW-SMA3 in the mail, ordered it last Thursday so
delivery was speedy and perhaps its just as well, the last thing anyone should
indure is the sense of suspense over a prolonged period of time, as it happens
we've just come out of a Long weekend - Monday was a Public Holiday which meant
no mail deliveries which was unfortunate as I may have received the System even
sooner but that's all by the by, I've had time to play with the Wireless System
so time to fill you all in.

I have the sister unit to the XW-SMA3 which is the XW-SMA1 and if you know how
to use the XW-SMA1 then you'll know how the XW-SMA3 works but there are still
differences between the 2 models.

Firstly the XW-SMA3 has an internal rechargeable battery built-in and is
designed to be used everywhere from the kitchen counter bench top to the
outdoor setting at a barbecue, the large rubber dust covers on the rear
covering the various sockets and terminals testify to that, the SMA1 doesn't
have these covers and nor does it have the rechargeable battery, the SMA1 is
designed specifically form bench tops, bookshelves and the like though both
units do have carry handles so they can be easily moved.

From here on I'll be referring to the XW-SMA3 though all the text will apply to
both the XW-SMa1 and XW-SMA3 models.

The XM-SMA3 is incredibly versatile allowing input of audio for playback from a
wide variety of sources:
• Connect the XW-SMA3 directly via its line-in socket to a line-out socket from
another device
• Connect your IOS device - using its charging cable - directly to the USB port
on the XW-SMA3 which allows for full control of your IOS device as well as
Digital Audio playback and battery charging.
• Stream to the XW-SMA3 using Airplay from iTunes, your Computer, from an IOS
device etc, you can stream directly to the XW-SMA3 using its own Wi-Fi network
or stream to the XW-SMA3 through your own Wi-Fi network, this means that -
whether you're at home or away camping - you'll be able to enjoy the good
quality sound the XW-SMA3 offers.

• Integrate the XW-SMA3 into your Home Network as a DLNA device, Windows and
Windows Media will automatically see the XW-SMA3 and play audio content through
it. You can also use Windows Explorer to select your audio content for
playback through the XW-SMA3 and so on.

The XW-SMA3 comes with a simple but yet functional remote controller, my only
annoyance about the controller is its size - no not too big but a little to
small -. Thankfully the unit can be controlled using buttons on the front
should the remote controller unit be lost.

You can control power status, volume, skip between tracks, select sources and
play/pause, the controls seem well chosen and are pretty much what most people
would want from a Media Player.

Volume is pleasing, not incredibly loud but loud enough without distortion, a
good bass response, pleasant mid range and acceptable highs.

The XW-SMA3 is further enhanced by the use of the IOS/Android Pioneer
Controller App which brings Internet Radio, Spotify, Pandora and so forth
directly to the player, , the App requires some labeling of buttons but is
fully accessible once that's done.

Are there any better Wireless Media Systems out there? When it comes to audio
then yes there are, the Soundlink Air sounds quite a bit better than the
Pioneer XW-SMA3 and both units are portable though the Bose system is nearly
twice the price of the Pioneer and - even then - the rechargeable battery is an
extra option. Given the price tag of the Pioneer - around $250 - I would
certainly look at this system first, even though the Bose Soundlink Air does
sound better the Pioneer XW-SMA3 has very acceptable audio quality and will
suit most people in most situations.

Re: Sound card recommendation wanted

2014-06-01 Thread Joe Paton
Hi,

I aggree that on-board sound systems can be pretty good.

Comparisons between different sound cards, if supported by
specifications are invaluable. If not, then an element of subjectivity
takes us in to an area where opinions are only really valuable to the
holder of these opinions. So here are some of my opinions.

I used to be happy with my audiofile 24/96. There were occasional
problems with crackle on one channel, this would go away if the system
were rebooted. I suspect that this was a driver issue, but never really
got behind the problem.

I used this card with XP, and more recently windows 7. The control
pannel, delivered with the latest
revision of the drivers became unusable with a screen reader, However
when set up, the card behaved well enough, considering that the price
also has dropped from the time when I first bought mine, some 8 years
ago. Still a good card, and gave good latency when used with Reeper.

Then I changed the computer, and bought a Dell optiplex, I5 processor, 8
GB ram, and 1 TB HD.

The onboard audio device, a real tek High definition audio system, is
quite frankly, the worst audio device I have ever worked with.

Dell's control pannel, is partly accessible, but it is hit and miss when
changing settings. There are settings in the control pannel, that are
not exposed to the windows mixer, so you have to use it.

I couldn't use the audiofile 24/96 because the optiplex uses PCIE slots
only. The audiofile, is available only as a PCI board, and although
there are converters from PCIe to PCI, the profile of the 24/96 excludes
it from this adaption so this sound card is now in an older dell, which
will run only as long as the capacitors hold out on the board, and they
are blowing so life is limited.

This is why I am now looking to use the audio interfaces from tascam.

I already have a US-122-A B but this device has no windows 7 drivers.
shame.

So I am looking at the current tascam range, similar to the device I
already own, and this replacement should cost about 80 UK pounds.

Then we should be good to go as they say.

Thanks,

Joe

 Subject: Sound card recommendation wanted

 Hi all,

Can anyone suggest a good quality internal sound card where the accompanying
software is JAWS friendly. I want one with separate line in and microphone
jacks and if possible two sets of stereo line out. My old Sound Blaster Live
 could do this.

 Thanks very much,
 Barry Chapman

Hello dane.
The audio interfaces I mentioned are portable of course, but not as
small as the sound card of which you speak.
They are however extremely rugged and use quarter inch jacks for the
inputs, High quality Mic pre-amps, and really built for on the road use.

Thanks,

Joe

I will take a look at that but I did manage to find a local distributor for the
iMic device, its about the size of a wrist watch and has a switchable input -
Line-in or Mic - and a standard line-out/headphones socket, all controls for
the iMic are controlled from the Windows Control Panel or the Sounds System
Preferences on a Mac, price in Australian dollars is around $50, the perfect
external sound device to have packed with your Macbook or other Notebook.

 Hello.
You could look at the Tascam US 122 MK II USB Audio-Interface:
I'm about to get a-hold of the next model, us-124 I think it is, only
because it has a variable line-out. All the controls are mounted on the
top of the device, so you don't really need the accompanying software.

 Check it out.

Unfortunately, I doubt that you will be able to find a sound card which has
 Jaws friendly software.

However, go to techbuy.com.au and do a search for sound card.

There are still several cards made by Creative (even though their model
names do their best to hide the nature of their functions).

I suggest that you look closely at the Asus XONAR cards.
