Setting up your hi-fi
Hi folks. Below is a link to an article by the Chord company about setting up your hi-fi and the role good quality components play in such a system. Of course the article speaks about things from the Chord companies product point of view but the principles are interesting regardless of what brand you use. By the way this is Chord, the speaker cable and interconnects and not the Khord Electronics company. You will note the spelling is different. Anyhow if it interests you the link is below. Reclockers
Hi all. My computer guy was talking to me around a week ago as we discussed him building a new computer for me, a high spec computer. He said I should consider using a reclocker that goes between my PC and my USB DAC. Has anybody ever used one of these and didit make a difference to the sound quality. I had never heard of them until he mentioned it but I'm not sure what difference, if any one would make. Any comments? Walter.
Opinions sought and opinion given!
Hi all. At the moment I've begun the task of upgrading my Hi-fi system but I should let you know at this point what my system comprises of. In truth I have 2 systems; one upstairs in a double bedroom and one downstairs in my living room. The living room system comprises of a pair of piano black B & W CM9 speakers driven by an Arcam A28 integrated amplifier. I have three audio sources; The top of the range blueraye DVD and a custom built PC and my cable digi box. The interconnect are high end cables as is the speaker cable and topped off with an Arcam R-Pac DAC. The upstairs system comprises of a pair of B & W CM5 stand mount speakers plus the B & W PV1 Sub Woofer driven by the Arcam Solo Neo. My sources are another custom built PC with sound quality the main consideration when having it constructed. The Solo Neo is a mini music system comprising of a good quality CD player and DAB radio and internet radio in the one box. And finally the Arcam R-Pac DAC, just like in the living room. Again the interconnects and speaker cables are high quality. My original intention was to use the upstairs system as a work horse when it comes to downloading and uploading files and processing the downloads etc. The intention was to use the downstairs for "serious" music listening. However The quality I have upstairs is equal to the quality downstairs and I've never used the system downstairs as I spend all my time up here. The system downstairs has never really been run in since I got it and in effect the system downstairs is just filling the living room. I've decided to have only one system and have decided to have that one system up here. I have replaced the Arcam R-Pac DAC with the Chord Electronics Chordette DAC. This has made a huge difference to the sound reproduction in this room up here. The next step is to upgrade the speakers and I have a good relationship with my local Hi-Fi dealer. They have brought around the updated B & W 705 stand mount speakers and installed them. I can audition them for a week or so then I will get a pair of the B & W 805 stand mount speakers to audition. Finally I might get a pair of the B & W 703 floor standing speakers but it might just be that I'll have made my mind up by that time. The Speakers I have now are the 705s. I've had them since Friday afternoon and have run them 24 hours a day to run them in as they hadn't been fully run in; they are brand new speakers just out the box. I am amazed at the quality of sound from those speakers the 700 series is the successor to the CM series and the 705s are the equivalent of the CM5s. However they are by far superior in sound quality. Imaging is so precise and the soundstage is so very open. I at times find myself sitting in my chare and looking slightly upwards as there is a lot of elevation in the sound stage it almost gives the impression I'm looking up onto a stage. Guitars and piano sound very accurate and the sound could be considered forward of the speakers. The 3D imagery is amazing as there is so much depth. I have a newage track by a guy called Deuter. This track contains at various points gentle and delicate chimes and they are very distinctive and the decay is obvious. I am impressed with these speakers and look forward to hearing the 805s and if the 705s are so good, goodness knows what to expect from the 805s, they are though double the price of the 705s. Once I've settled on the speakers then I'll change the amplifier. I have in mind the Arcam A39 as I like the Arcam/B & W combination. However nothing at this point is written in stone so your input would be appreciated. Has anybody heard the B & W 805 speakers? If so; what's your opinion? Do you have any suggestions as an alternative to B & W, or Arcam? I like a detailed sound with distinctive bass but not over powering. I don't like a clinical sound as it feels so sterile. I also like a forward soundstage. Many people I know prefer a more recessed sound but I like the forward sound as it gives the impression that the musicians are present in the room. As I said, nothing is written in stone yet and I've not committed; apart from the Chordette DAC which I've already purchased. I will be trading in the bulk of my stuff for the new and fortunately will get a good price as the items I have are in new condition. Your input will be of help and might set me off on a different path that might be more productive. Walter.

Hi. I'm assuming you have already recorded the tapes and saved them as Wave files. You could have saved them as mp3 when you finished the recording but as you mentioned cue points, you can't save these as mp3. However if the recording process is complete then open the files you want converted. Now the Cue points you spoke of I imagine you have inserted these at points where you want a new track to begin? If this be so then you need to split that file into individual tracks. When you have done that then you can do a batch conversion of the individual Wave files into mp3 files. Gold Wave will do all of that for you. Long time no speak - I hope you're doing well. Many thanks for this. I read the manual and was confused ... it said that the Talking Books folder could accommodate DAISY books and any other file type that was recognised by the player (which I took to include MP3) but, in a separate section, it said that only DAISY and Epub (and some other format that I can't remember) would be played in the Talking Books folder. In that section it did mention other bookshelves/folders such as Music but my interpretation of what was written was that the player should format these itself rather than me actually having to add the Music/Podcasts/etc folders. Either way, I'm bemused that all the file types play in the Talking Books folder on SD cards and other USB drives but not on these ones. RE: Issue With Victor Reader Stratus12 M
Hi. I've just bought the same unit in the last8 days and I had a similar problem. Playing books isn't a problem but to play music and to get features such as the random play, you need to creat a folder on the pen drive called $VRMusic and to put your music files inside that folder. I actually prefer my Plextalk PTN1 both for ease of use and sound quality but it is showing it's age and on two occasions I thought it had died, then it decided it wasn't going to die but I reckoned I'd better get something to replace it sooner rather than later. Hi. I use an Arcam usb dac, that's the only connection between my PC and amplifier. My interconnects are all high end. Are you using the built-in sound system on the Mother Board? New board new sound chip more than likely. My Windows desktop computer is 4 years old and I have to admit that the Bilt-in Realtek Sound device - particularly with Windows 7 and up - sounds very nice and records well. Corus I’m probably clutching at straws regarding your Sound quality difference, I’m just guessing and assuming you’re using a built-in sound device, use an external USB Sound device and you’ll probably notice even more difference. Other factors may come into play of course, you say the power supply was replaced? Well it could be possible that the previous power supply you had had some faults, was under powering the computer in some way thus the sound quality could have been degraded. No difference in the sound between MP3 320K and HD Audio files? Well you probably won’t pick any difference from a built-in sound card but if you have a dedicated DAC or other system for HD stuff then you certainly should notice the difference. > On 7 Apr 2016, at 10:22 PM, Walter wrote: > > Hi folks. a couple of months back my PC had a power supply problem and > also required a new mother board. improved sound quality, wonder why?
Hi folks. a couple of months back my PC had a power supply problem and also required a new mother board. Trying to find out the trouble took a bit of time as my computer guy ordered the parts and they went missing and he had to re-order. The whole thing took around 5 weeks before I could get my PC up and running again. When I did and played some music through my hi-Fi I was astonished to hear the sound reproduction had dramatically improved, and I don't just mean a little, it is a huge improvement. My computer guy was here this morning for another matter not concerning my PC but another computer I have but I asked his opinion on the improved sound quality. He noticed it right away and felt that although I was playing mp3 tracks at 320kbs, he said it sounded identical to the hd sound on his music tracks, he buys hd definition tracks. I was wondering just why the difference from before and now? Everything is the same, my sound set up has not changed in any way. The only thing that has changed is the power supply and the motherboard. I can't see the power supply impacting on sound quality but the mother board is different. The old one was a Gigabite but the new one is Msi? or is it IMS, I really can't remember but whereas the old motherboard had usb 3 ports, this one has usb 3.1. I'm wondering if this is what is making the difference. Do any of you use usb3.1 ports and if so, has it made a difference to your sound quality? That is the only thing I can think of that would make a difference. Opinions welcome. Walter. --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus
RE: SoundCloud
Hi. I was asked to check this out from a user point of view and didn't find it accessible. I was asked on behalf of a charity project to play around with pre-uploaded music files and didn't find the free version much use. This guy wanted to upload audio files for the public to play such as info regarding government benefits etc. I'll paste my response to that guy below so you will see my experience. Walter. Hi Glyn. Firstly my apology; I was going through my deleted items, clearing them out when I came across your email. somehow it went straight to my deleted items rather than my in box. I would have replied sooner if I had seen it so sorry about that. OK. This is my initial input regarding the site. The music is displayed clearly and the play button is easy to find and activate but that is where the simplicity ends and the problems begin. Once you have activated the play button and the music plays, there is no way you can use the other play controls because the music drowns out the screen reader and as there is no keyboard short cut keys trying to use them is a hiding to nothing. You have to wait for a quiet passage in the audio before trying frantically to find a control but the quiet period never lasts long enough for you to find what you want. This is the free version and I noticed there is a Pro service but I guess you have to pay for that but there is no way of telling if the pro version is any more accessible than the free version and in any case, the people who would want to play any files you upload would use the free service. As I've said I've only looked at the site briefly and when I discovered getting to the play controls during playback was problematic I didn't go any further. As with WMP, if there were short cut keys such as Control+s for stop or Control+p for pause or control+m for mute or+control +r for rewind then it would be a good service to utilise. It might be you can map the keyboard and create these shortcuts but I'd need to look further into the site and I'll do that as soon as I can. Of course this initial summery is from a blind point of view. People with hearing loss or other disabilities but who have site, or even some partially sighted folk would be able to use it. Unfortunately though if you have no usable sight and in the absence of play controls accessibility then it wouldn't be of any use to them. Nonetheless you have to consider the majority of people who would use the facility and a minority group shouldn't be allowed to veto something because they are disenfranchised; you can please all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time but you will never please all of the people all of the time. This doesn't mean that solutions aren't sought to resolve the disenfranchisement and that might be by linking to another service. I will ask on the tech lists I'm on to see what can be done and will get back to you. OK, no matter, he's in jail for pedafilia anyway. If you take a large, very large piece of thick card, or even a large oblong of very thin plywood and holde it at each end and begin to bounce it, the middle portion will begin to flex and you will hear the sound it makes. Audio podcasting
Hi all. I'll try and make this request as simple as possible but it is about a subject I know nothing about so if I display some ignorance then I ask your tolerance. I'm involved with a government funded project that is based around helping disabled people to understand the services that are on offer to help them decide for themselves the level of independence they can handle and the level of help they need and how to get the funding to accomplish this. For those in the UK this deals with the SDss service (Self Directed Support Scotland). The guy in charge would like to provide audio recordings of varying aspects of this service but the problem is where to host them so they are accessible to all. He sent me a link to www.soundcloud.com to check it out for accessibility and when I played the music tracks that were there I as a blind person could not access the other play controls as the music drowned out the screen reader. These controls did not have any keyboard shortcuts so were impossible to hear until the music ended. This would be fine for those who can see a screen but not for those who can't. Does anybody know of a service, some host where these files can be posted and can be accessed by all and that the play controls can be accessed by keyboard commands? Free services would be preferred but at this point anything is of interest. If anyone can help with a place to place these audio podcasts then I'd be grateful for your help. Hi. Hmm, I don't know how to do that. I think my version must be a different version from Dennis's version as I can't find the options he mentions; i.e. In Presets there is no radio preset just an edit box and an import button and all that does is give me a list of two file types. I guess it is going to take a few weeks or more to play around withit. and if all else fails I can always set everything to default and start again. RE: Searching Records
Hi Roger. OK, it depends on how you have your folders and drives set up but if you have a particular drive you know the song is on then go to that drive and open it. Now do a control and E and you will be placed in an edit box. Type in the search term i.e. artist name or song name or album etc and then press enter. You should hear the progress in percentage terms and after the search is complete Shift tab twice to item view and your search results will be displayed. If you know the folder your song is in then just open that folder and do what is described above, your search term will be shorter as there will be less to search. RE: Bowers & Wilkins T7 review: The Bluetooth speaker worth waiting for - Pocket-lint
Hi. I read that revue and it could hardly be considered unbiased. The guy states from the outset he doesn't like B & W stuff so he is hardly likely to give a subjective revue. It's kinda like somebody saying they hate baked beans and then him being asked to taste and give an honest revue and an impartial comment on which brand of baked beans is best. At the end of the day if you are going to spend a lot of money then you should always audition the equipment first and do so on more than one occasion. The best option is to ask for a home audition because even in the audition room of the dealer, the acoustics will not be the same as your living room or bedroom. If the dealer is worth his salt he should have a demo model or should be able to get one from the manufacturer to let you listen to. I'm currently auditioning the B & W PV1 subwoofer. I've had it for nearly 2 weeks now and have given it a good run for it's money and like what i've heard and will buy one. If I had listened to it in the store it most likely would have been through different equipment and as I've said, different acoustics. For the most part, store auditioning is great for narrowing your options until you find something that might be to your taste then you could ask for a home audition. In the end, it doesn't matter how many revues you read, your ears are the best judge of what sounds good or bad to you. RE: The difference a subwoofer can make
Hi John. Yes, Arcam do a few dacs but the one I have is the R-Pack USB DAC. With the subwoofer I find that the USB interconnect is better if you use the Chord cable. Without the subwoofer things are a bit clinical but you get great imagery and clarity but as I said, a little too clinical. However with the addition of the sub that clinical characteristic is neutralised and you get the benefit of a solid bass line but also clarity at the top end. The Arcam R-Pack USB dac is their entry level model but is very good, especially when it comes to playing mp3 files. I've compared listening to a CD on a separate CD player with the MP3 file through the dac and there is very little difference. Unless you were doing an A/B test you wouldn't know which one is playing and even then, you might not detect the difference. The Subwoofer is great but the only drawback is setting the default level, that is digital with a touch screen but once set, it need not be touched again ever. It does have a "on the fly" volume in case you want some extra woomf on a particular track but once the sub is turned off and then turned back on, the "on the fly" volume control goes back to its neutral setting. I've been auditioning at home the B & W PV1d subwoofer. Most people will assume that subwoofers are all about bass and nothing else. Maybe I should describe my set up before going on. My Source is a custom built tower PC. I'm using an Arcam R-pack DAC with a Chord USB interconnect going from the PC to the Dac. The Phonos going from the Dac to the amplifier which is an Arcam Solo Neo are Chord Chameleon interconnects. My Speaker cable is also Chord cables and the Speakers are the B & W CM5s plus the B & W PV1D subwoofer. OK, Before installing the subwoofer the sound from my system was very good indeed but since the use of the PV1 there has been a profound difference. The CM5s are extremely effective despite being stand mount and their bass response is very good also. However, with the PV1 the sound has a completely different quality and the sound stage has changed out of all recognition. It is a very warm and solid sound and very large. Bass is deep but very well controlled. On Saturday evening I was sitting listening to a few tracks and was playing at a reasonably high level but it sounded powerful but not "loud." The thing though that really caught my attention was how wide and high the sound was, it filled the whole wall, in fact it appeared the sound was larger than the room I was in and in truth, although I have good spacial awareness I was unsure where the speakers were placed as the sound was very much forward of the speakers and had great depth. I could tell the vocalist was right in front of me but the drums were behind him and other instruments could be placed accurately. It is very hard to describe to others what I heard but for those of you who have or have had some site, it is kinda like sitting down in front of a 42 inch TV but when you turn it on, the picture looks like a 65 inch screen. There is one fly in the ointment though; The sub being digital has a number of settings one can adjust to suit your needs whether it be to match a different set of speakers, if it is for music listening or movie or gaming etc, these settings are not accessible to the blind. However when they are set they are fixed until you wish to change them and even if you turn off the sub and turn it back on, these settings remain. RE: Another question about the Olympus DM5
Hi. Well, where do I begin. I think I'm very spoiled because I have a 20gig Creative Zen touch mp3 player. This player is magnificent when it comes to sound quality but I'm not able to use it because I can't find the Win7 drivers for the player so I can load it with music. I think it is designed for XP users only. Giving I can't use it I was hoping the DM5 would have good sound reproduction and although it is reasonable at a push, it doesn't compare to the Zen Touch. My disappointment was compounded when I compared it with my mobile phone player which is superior to the DM5 in sound quality. The DM5 spoken menus are inadequate. It tells you the track name but you get very little info of how many tracks you have on the player. For example if I decide to play music by selecting artist then it doesn't give me the number of tracks in any particular artists folder and also when I arrow up and down the list, the reaction time is very slow and that is with speeding up the voice guidance. I'm inclined to just use my mobile for music listening unless I can get a better player that will give me very high quality sound reproduction. Oh, nearly forgot, I have to increase the volume to nearly full to get a good level of volume, it seems the DM5 output signal is a low one. It would seem to me that the player is truly meant as a portable recorder and the music player function is an afterthought. This player has never really been used, I'm just getting to grips with it. I bought it a couple of years ago and it has lay in an equipment box ever since and not been touched but maybe I'll consider selling it. Hi thanks for that. Actually, I don't think the mp3 player in the DM5 is up to much. I have a Nokia 2210 navigator and the player in that phone is by far superior. The difference a subwoofer can make
Hi folks. The subwoofer has filled out a great more than just an improved bass line but the whole picture has been dramatically altered. When I listen to a radio drama it almost sounds as if the actors are giving me a private show and are acting out right in front of me. I've got to say, I'm mightily impressed with this sub and for those who can afford a good sub, I would heartily recommend it. The off and on switch is also digital so you don't really know it is on or off, unless you can hear it but it automatically senses the lack of a signal and turns itself off. It also has an auto switch off facility which I have set to 30 minutes so when I go to bed and turn the amp off, if after 30 minutes it doesn't sense a signal it switches off and switches on again when you turn on the amp in the morning. There is a "on the fly" volume control but again, it is digital and not accessible but there is a work around. I'm so impressed that I will most likely buy a PV1 provided the dealer can get me a good price which he says he can but even if he couldn't, I'd still get one as I'm so truly impressed. I'm sitting here almost giggling at my confusion when I was listening, I heard sounds from about 3 or 4 feet to the left and right of where my speakers are placed but there is a cupboard on one side and a wall on the other and my brain was telling me, it isn't possible because there is a cupboard there and a wall over there, but my ears are saying, it doesn't matter, we are hearing it come from that location, a bit of most enjoyable confusion. I thought I would give you all the benefit of what I've experienced here Oh!! one final thought, it makes mp3 files sound so very good despite the compression. RE: Olympus DM5 question
Hi. When I attach the AC plug I get no notification. I didn't try charging via the usb because if a problem occurs then I have another element to consider, is the fault with the player, the usb connection or my computer etc. The AC was the most straightforward so I've used that but it must be the default setting. When I'm more experienced I will try the usb and no doubt I'll get a notification confirming usb charging, will have to wait and see. Last night I thought; what the hell, and put it on charge again over night. I didn't do anything different as far as I know but in the morning I disconnected it from the mains and turned it on and this time didn't get the three beeps and the voice navigation was working. I won't do anything involved with it until Friday when I'll get sighted help and if the charging indicator shows full then I'll try exploring the player. In between now and then I'll try working through some of the manual and try and make sense of it. However though, it is working, so far anyway. I think though I'll buy a replacement battery just to be on the safe side as they aren't too expensive from Amazon. Then depending on your U S B settings, you must either select the a c adapter setting, or it will be selected by default. Then once you here that, you must press enter, it should then speak the promt: "press ok to start charging" and once you here that you must press the enter key strait away. You might not here any feedback at that point, but its very important you press enter at that stage and no other button, because that dialog will dismiss. What happened to you is that you plugged it in power, but you did perhaps not confirm the charging aspect. Then it run on power only. So then you took it out, and when it turn back on, it gave you free short beeps to confirm that the battery is stil flat. It did not charge and therefore it only work in the wall. Hi Roger. Well, they must have changed things. I said to launch CDEX and press F4 and then shift tab, I made a mistake, you have to control tab twice. When you press F4 you do land on the encoding tab but if you do a control and tab twice you should get there. I'm using version 1.51 and if I have a copy here I can send it. Ghost files
Hi folks. Here's a conundrum for you, well, it is for me. I'll try and explain as clearly as I can but it isn't a problem, just a curiosity. I am ripping about 3,000 CDs and I've done around 850 so far. Now the method I use is 1. I rip the disc and then when ripped I back it up 3 times. So, I will copy all the discs I rip to external drive 1. Then I'll copy the same files to external drive 2. finally I will move the discs I've ripped to external drive 3.I did a property check of the stuff I've ripped so far and was told that the files in external drive 3 was 13,999. External drive 1 and 2 said there were 13,994 files in each drive, 5 files less than external drive 3. The Properties for all 3 drives gave the same number for folders. I then by a process of elimination discovered the folder that had the problem. The folder Carol Kidd has one album in it called "All My Tomorrows." When I open this folder there are 11 tracks in there, as there should be. However if I do a property check of the folder it says there are 16 files in the folder. There shouldn't be 16 tracks, only 11. I thought these files might be hidden files and to find out what they were I went to tools and I instructed the computer to show hidden files but when I went to the album folder, there were still only 11 tracks but a property checked still showed 16 files. Does anybody have an idea of why this should be and what are those extra 5 files? Walter. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! RE: Ripping With CDEX:IsIt No Longer Possible To Have Cdex Title Tracks?
Hi. Not all data base will contain the information you might need. I've just purchased the Porter Wagoner & Dolly Parton 6 disc box set. This was released on the 26th of May this year, I got it 2 weeks after the release. However when ripping the discs with CDEX or Express Rip I could get no track info and this was a Bear Family box set. I had to go on the web and find a track list and enter the info manually. It is rather strange because I have some very obscure CDs and the Data Base found that info without trouble. You might find it of interest that Express Rip gives you the option of two Data Bases and if one doesn't get the info, you can then try the other. Hi. there is but I don't have time to explain as I'm heading for bed. If you want instructions then let me know but basically you launch CDEX then pres F4 and have a look around, you will find a number of tabs for instructing the programme to connect to a data base and for selecting the quality of the rip. Hello. Surprised this doesn't seem to have been brought up already but the thread is long and there are loads of messages so I might have missed it. I am going to guess that the reason this no longer works is that the gracenet database is no longer available to the programme. I believe a license fee had to be paid to use the service in the first place, and while I could be wrong about that, the database did change ownership recently, and both Winamp and CDex no longer have access to it. WInamp is no longer being updated as I'm sure everyone knows, and I don't think much is being done with Cdex either. So it's likely that, unless another solution presents itself, you will just have to manually input your track information, or use a different programme. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! RE: Soundbars
Hi Tom. It is like most things in life, you get what you pay for. If a soundbar at $150 improves the sound quality from your TV then I guess it is worthit. each person must decide what they can afford and act accordingly. If you have your hi-fi in your living room where you have the TV then feeding the TV through the Hi-fi will greatly improve the sound quality. I think it should be noted here that Soundbars are designed to give a particular cinematic sound and in my opinion if it is for listening to music seriously then a good hi-fi is the better option. If though it is to use with your TV or DVD then a soundbar is a good investment. If you are going to spend a lot of money then you would be wise to audition the soundbar first by visiting a reputable dealer. There are soundbars to suit every pocket the sound quality will generally match the price. RE: Soundbars
Hi Dane. When I said the Soundbar is 7 to 8 inches deep I meant from back to front. The height from the table top is only around 2 inches. It comes with booster feet if your TV has a stand so it can sit over the TV stand but you don't need to use these booster feet. If the beginning of the screen at the bottom of the TV is more than a couple of inches from the top of the table then it will be OK. It can even sit on a shelf under the TV as it won't bother the sound quality. To let you know how it is set up; you are provided with a headset, just like a pair of headphones but without the ear cups. You place this over your head like a headphone band. This is connected by a wire, a very long wire, around 15 to 20 feet in length. When you plug it into the soundbar it tells you it is ready for the set up and explains what it wants you to do. When you are ready you press the up volume button and it begins. It asks you to sit in your 1st listening position. When you are there you are to press the up volume button. You then hear various frequency tones of differing sound levels and intensities being first emitted from the soundbar and then the subwoofer. This goes on for around 10 to 15 seconds. When it stops it then asks you to move to your second listening position and again to press the up volume button and the routine is repeated. You do this for 5 listening positions and when it is completed there is a pause for around 20 seconds while the onboard processor calibrates the internal speakers When it has completed the process it thanks you and lets you know you can disconnect the headset. When I did this my first listening position was in the position I would normally sit. The other 4 positions was at the four corners of the room and this gave such a wide sound stage. My living room is 27 feet in length and my listening position is more or less in the middle and the soundbar sitting flat on the table in front of the TV. It was baffling to hear sounds coming from 12 or 13 feet to my left or the same to my right. The sound of a car or a jet taking off across the soundstage was impressive as you heard it travel the length of the living room. The Headset obviously contained sound sensors or mics to allow the sound to be analysed. Would strongly recommend the SR1. RE: iPhone Dock: The Choice Has Been Made
Hi. If these speakers are anything like the B & W CM5 stand mount speakers or the CM9 floor standing speakers then you won't be sorry. I have always liked B & W speakers as they have a vary balanced sound and have a very good bass response, they are also spacious and imiging is very accurate. Ihave the CM 5s to listen to music or radio via my PC and downstairs are the floor standing CM9s which are very impressive. Good luck with your purchase but as it is B & W, there won't be much luck needed. My decision has come down to the Bowers & Wilkins Z2 iPhone dock/airPlay speaker though I warn everyone now, the price for one of these gorgeous things is not cheap, at around $400 but - from what I've heard - its certainly well worth the money spent. The Z2 sports a 9 pin Lightning connector, has an Aux-in socket and can be used with airPlay. WinEx DVD ripper
Hi folks. Although I'm in no hurry I intend getting a reasonable DVD ripper. I've tried in the past to use Magic DVD ripper but that isn't easy to use. Lots of DVD rippers are not accessible but while doing a search I came across WinEx DVD ripper. There is a free version and a platinum paid for version. I have downloaded the free version but haven't yet installed it because at this moment I have no DVDs to rip. I intend buying the 5 DVD disc series Cosmos and I will want to rip them to my hard drive. I would like to know before installing this WinEx DVD ripper if any of you have had experience of it. According to a web site I found, not connected to the WinEx web site, it is simple to use. The paid for version can defeat DRM but it seems not the free version but that doesn't matter because I don't think the discs I will buy are DRM protected. I really just want to know if the programme is as easy to use as has been stated. If you have used it or still use it could you please share your experience as it would be very helpful, thank you. Hi. The paid for version of Switch gives you the opeertunity to convert between 24 different file types and If I remember around 250 files at one go. I usually use Gold Wave for my bulk convertions so haven't used Switch for a few years. The main times I've used Switch is when I wanted to convert MP4a or MP4b files which Gold Wave doesn't handle. Help with Winamp Crossfader please.
Hi to all. Recently I have reinstalled Winamp and also the SQ crossfader plug in. I used this a couple of years ago or more and with reformating etc I never got around to reinstalling it but now I have. Thing is, I forgot what configuration I had on the crossfader plug in. Someone on this list kindly helped out but unfortunately the instructions he sent got lost a long time ago in a motherboard crash. I've done a little playing around but as I don't really know what I'm doing I don't know what is the best settings. I have found there is no save or OK button when I've adjusted the configuration of the plug in, only a close button. I thought when pressed this would save the new settings but it seems not because when I went back they were as they were when the plug in was installed. Anyhow if any of you use the crossfader and have any suggestions as to which is the optimum settings or the settings you use I would appreciate your input. Out of interest, I like a gentle, smooth transition between tracks. If any one can help then I thank you. Walter.
Arcam internet radio accessibility
Hi All. back in July all my electronic equipment including hi-fi, computers, radios, telephones, everything electronic! was fried when my home was struck by lightning. It took around 8 to 10 weeks to get the insurance thing sorted out and buy new equipment. I decided to take the opportunity and upgrade my stuff and I now play my PC through an Arcam Solo Neo mini system with Cord interconnects and cord speaker cable driving the B & W CM8 speakers. I have a higher end system down stairs in the lounge but for this room up here it is adequate, in fact very good. It has taken me until now to turn my attention to some of the facilities of the Arcam Solo Neo. This unit has FM radio, DAB radio, A CD player; this CD player is what it says it is, a CD player. It won't play MP3 discs but it has a USB port for a pen drive so it is unimportant that the CD player won't play mp3 discs. It has a power output of 75w per channel and has the ability to feed speaker systems in different parts of the house, if that is your thing. The bit that interested me the most is the internet radio so I set about finding out if a blind, a totally blind person can access it. Via the unit it's self the short answer is no as there is no verbal feedback and the menu system is too complicated to memorise so unfortunately I can't use the main unit for internet radio. The good thing though about it is when you do get into the radio stations you can use your up and down arrows to browse through the stations. However the positive thing is, although I can't access the internet radio via the Solo Neo, I can do so through the arcam internet radio web site. When up and running you can browse stations via location. If you choose this option then you can scroll down through countries which are put into continental blocks. So, if I scroll down to North America I have the choice of Mexico, The United States or Canada. I chose the United states. When in there the list is broken down into states and you are informed by each state how many internet stations are available in that state. For example; Tennessee had 63 stations but Virginia had 129. When you click on the state you want then the list gives the name of the station, what kind of station it is and location. When you click on play you are connected immediately. You can create categories for your favourite stations i.e. news, talk, music or sports etc. and these can be saved in your favourites section. Interestingly what you do on the website is also duplicated on the Arcam unit itself. So when on the website I've so far created two favourite categories; Talk and Country. Now if I could use the main unit I would find these options there also. The website is completely accessible but the Arcam Solo Neo is not. If you have an Arcam product such as the Neo then you have to get sighted help to register it buy inputting the unit number and creating an Arcam account but it is fun not having to search for internet stations on the web where things can be hit or miss. Here you have a list of stations you can connect to with ease. I hope this information is helpful. Walter. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Lin out/in discrepancy
Hi all. This is just a fishing exercise to see if anybody has experienced the same problem and if they found a solution. I have a custom built computer and I play my music on my external drives via the PCs line out and into the line in on my Arcam Solo Neo mini system. When I play a CD or use the DAB radio on this system the quality is good and I can play it at a high level. However when I switch the source to the input I use for my PC the volume level is much lower. If I boost the volume to the point I like it but for get to turn down the volume before I move to CD or DAB then I very near blow off my wig. I have all the volume sliders at max in the control panel but the volume is still too low. The only way I have been able to remedy this problem is to use a headphone amplifier and this helps raise the volume but not equalling the CD or DAB volume and I guess since these are integral to the system they are not using a line in source. The piece of kit I'm using is the Arcam R-Pack DAC and headphone amplifier. I tried the line level connection with good quality inter connects but this didn't increase the volume of my PC. I then switched to the headphone output which has volume controls and this helped a lot. Has anyone encountered this problem and if so, did you resolve it and how did you do this? Walter. Laptops and audio quality
Hi to all. Last Friday lightning struck my home and wiped out nearly all my media equipment, including my high spec PC and my Toshiba laptop. I will need to replace those and as audio is my main concern I would like to ask the group; in your opinion, which laptop, or laptop manufacturer produces the laptop with the best audio output. I will be playing this through an external sound source such as a Bose soundbar. I live in the UK and I would say the max budget is £1,000. Apart from the sound quality, the processing power would need to be fast as I do a lot of file transferring and downloading. Opinions welcome. Walter. RE: stereo amplifier
Hi Elizabeth. I think you are going to have to provide a bit more info. What is available depends on so many factors, not least your location. If you are in the US then members from the US will be best placed to help you. If you are in the UK, Australia or New Zealand or south Africa etc then those members will be the best people to advise. In addition what specifications do you require and what is your price range. NAD over the years have become less popular as the quality of the product has declined but there are still some around. Personally I would recommend Arcam if you are in the UK but they are very expensive but the price just reflects the quality. I don't know if Arcam is available in the US or the other places I mentioned but they are easy to get a hold of in the UK but you would need to visit their web site to get a list of dealers. If you went for something like Arcam or any other mid range to high range product you would really be wise to audition the amplifier first. If you are looking for "budget" amplifiers then Sony, Pioneer, JVC, Marantz etc all do good products. If you are really interested in sound quality then looking for a amplifier with digital inputs would help such as optical or coaxial inputs. If you intend linking your phone to it then I don't really know if any of the amps would have USB inputs. One final suggestion; if you are in the UK then try Richer Sounds as they always have very good deals. Walter. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of E. In the UK if you wanted 1tb of storage on the Amazon cloud then it would cost £320 per year, that's $486 per year, a lot of money that will never cease and may only go up. If it were a more economical option that would be different. Find the combo box where you select the catogory of the items you want to search for, in your case, MP3 downloads. Then tab to the edit box and typen in Tony Christie. You can type in anything; the Beatles, The Eagles etc, it is just to get you to the results page. Once there look for the link that will take you to the cloud player and press enter on it. If you can try that and then get back to us and let us know the result. By the way, have you purchassed any music from Amazon's mp3 downloads in the past? RE: issues with the amazon cloud player
Hi Ray. Well not knowing exactly what difficulties you are having and not knowing what part of the world you are in I can only let you know my situation. I am in the UK and I'm using Win7 64bit with JAWS 13. When I go to www.amazon.co.uk/cloudplayer I must sign in and once I've done that I then can tab or arrow down and I get all the information that is there. I am told how many tracks are in my cloud player, how many more I can add (my purchased tracks are not added to my total, only tracks I import and I've not done that). I am also told how many genres are in my cloud player, how many artists, albums etc. I can creat play lists or search for a particular track or album and I can either choose to play or download them or only selected tracks. I did have trouble at first trying to download because it seemed I had to go into my tools menu and enable download alerts and once I did that all went fine. From where I stand at the moment I find the Amazon cloud player completely accessible. After I send this mail I'm going to try www.amazon.com/cloudplayer and see if I still get complete access. If you are not in the UK and are trying to download from the UK site then i can understand it not allowing this due to boundary restrictions. I do know if I go to the amazon.com site and try to purchase mp3 files, it won't let me. Walter. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Ray T. RE: Bose Cinemate 1SR speakerbar
Hi. I don't know where you are located but here in the UK the Bose Cinemate 1SR cost me £1300 but as I have a good relationship with the dealer I asked for and got a %10 discount so it in reality cost me £1170. If you are in the states then Amazon offers the Cinemate 1SR for $1499. The Bose Lifestyle 135 in the UK is £2400 and again on Amazon, is in the states $2400. This makes the Lifestyle 135 cheaper in the USA than the UK when you take into consideration the exchange rate. As I commented on in my original post a lot of the features in the 135 were of little use to me as a blind person but if you want music around the house and the ability to control the base unit from anywhere in the house plus the garden and not forgetting the IPod or Iphone dock then the Lifestyle 135 is the way to go. I don't need any of these features; the only feature I would use is the extra connections but I didn't consider the extra money worth it. I have run a few CDs through the sound bar and it has a very open and spacious sound. When I got it first we ran the adapt IQ for the first time but the next day I ran it again and it made a huge difference. My Hi-fi system consisted of 2 mission 753 floor standing speakers set about 15feet apart and I got a very wide sound stage. Now they are no longer there but the sound bar is giving me as wide a sound stage which is rather strange because I know there is no speakers to the left or right but I'm hearing vocals and instruments from the far right and left and I know there is no speakers in there. If I had surround sound speakers there then my brain would acknowledge that but there isn't. there is just a soundbar measuring 36 inches long by 2 inches thick and 4.5 inches deep. That is with the Sound bar sitting on the TV table, just under the TV. The soundbar can be wall mounted but this does not effect the sound quality, The 1SR's adapt IQ detects it's orientation and as the name in plies, adapts. arrower but none the less spacious. I'm now going to take a little bit of time running it through it's paces but I think I will quickly get used to it and come to enjoy it more and more as time goes by. The Bose Cinemate 1SR and the Lifestyle 135 are very very popular here. The guy from the dealership help me set it up and said they have sold loads of the 1SR and the Lifestyle 135 whereas despite an expensive TV campaign for the Sonus alternative, they have only sold 2. When you feel the speaker array you wonder how it can produce so much sound in such high quality in such a small package? The fascinating thing is, the speaker array can either be placed on a wall or can sit flat on a table and you get exactly the same high quality sound reproduction. The Speaker array knows it's orientation and if I were to lift it and put it on the wall, it senses this and compensates and you get the same sound as before, very clever. I hope this information has helped anyone who might be considering going down this route. Walter. To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

Hi. I really don't care about surround sound as the way my living room is set up it isn't feasible and I don't have any interest in movies, or TV. I really want it for music. I have a mid to high end hi-fi system and I think the Bose would be a doungrade but it is still a good listen from what I heard but it always sounds different when one gets it home. Walter. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Hamit Campos Sent: 01 June 2013 02:27 To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: Anyone had experience with the Bose Cinemate 1SR speakerbar? I've heard it at Best Buy. I love the stereo image, but for surround sound, I prefer a real surround sound system. With 6 actual speakers. Or 8 for 7.1 which you'll need for some Blu-Ray movies. I'll reserve judgment on it since I havn't heard it with an actual movie. All though like I said, I prefer a real system. If we want to go with Bose, if I were you, I'd get at the very least the Lifestyle T20. Hi folks. I for a number of reasons am thinking of investing in the Bose Cinemate 1SR speakerbar. This item is rather expensive and although I listened to it in the dealers for around an hour, it isn't the same as personal experience. The product with it's Bluetooth subwoofer sounds very good and it is supposedly very simple to configure. If you have heard or had experience using it I'd be grateful for your comments. As I said, it is rather expensive and the model with the higher specs is nearly double the price. I read on review on line about it and it is impressively simple to set up and it can either be wall mounted or lay flat on the table without any deterioration of sound quality. The opinion of the reviewer was it was a bit over priced and the latest Yamaha equivalent was better. Opinions sought and welcomed. Walter. RE: re blueray discs
Hi. I don't know where you are located but here in the UK , in the 1980's there was a battle between two video recorder formats; Betamax and VHS. At the end of the day VHS walked away all out winners. Now the battle is between HD (High Definition) and Blue Ray. Both do the same thing, give extremely hi quality video and use multi layer discs but are different formats. Now one can argue till the cows come home which is superior but here in the UK Blue Ray has grabbed the high ground. As Express Burn is produced by an Australian company and they offer a Blue Ray burner then I assume that Blue ray is the dominant format over there. It might be different in different parts of the world, I don't know but despite Blue Ray seizing most of the market here, I don't see many Blue Ray blank discs. In fact, getting blank DVD discs and CD discs is getting a little harder, there is not as much choice as there once was. Since people either stream movies or music or download them and play them via there PC and TVs there is less need for the trouble of burning discs. Help please with Roxio Easy VHS to DVD converter
Hi Folks. This request is on behalf of my sister who is also blind but knows nothing about computers and her husband, although sighted is totally tech illiterate. They have some VHS videos they wanted burned to DVD, and some LPs and audio cassettes which this programme can do also. To cut a long story short they bought the Roxio easy VHS to DVD converter. It seems though they don't find it easy. They have asked me if I would install the programme and do it for them but as I'm totally blind, I don't know if I would be able to do it, even with the help of my brother-in-law. I've not used any Roxio products and I have no idea how accessible this programme will be. I use JAWS 13 on a win7 system. Have any of you ever used the Roxio Easy VHS to DVD converter and how did you find it to use if you did and would a blind user be able to use it? Your help and any tips would be appreciated, especially by my sister. Walter. To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

I've never used one of these things before and I was wondering; Have any of you on this list used one and what was your impression? RE: files question
Hi. If you do a Google search you will find the programme easily, it is a very popular file converter and it is free. When you download and install you will have the full version for a trial period. When that period runs out you will be asked if you wish to purchase a license or revert to the free version and you can make your choice which you wish. The free version has limited file association compared to the paid for version but in my experience, the free version does everything I need to do. Ipods and MP3 files
Hi to all. I have never owned an apple product and as far as computers are concerned I've always worked with Windows. I am however contemplating purchasing an Ipod classic 160gig mp3 player. Since I'm unfamiliar with apple products I have a few questions. If I purchased an Ipod and wished to load it with MP3 music files from my own collection is it a simple matter of copy and paste? Does the Ipod show up on my PC as a removable drive? If this is not the case must I use some sort of conversion tool to accomplish this such as an Itunes file transfer manager and if so, how accessible is it, would I need Jaws scripts. Can I transfer music onto the player and delete files without any connection with Itunes.? I don't want to spend a lot of money and find I am unable to simply transfer files to the Ipod. RE: Prism Video Converter
OK folks. I guess I had better explain this. Someone on this list a while back asked for recommendations for ripping DVDs. I was one of the responders and recommended Magic DVD. Arthur then sent me a copy of Prism and I've installed it and have it up and running. However I've been communicating with Arthur privately about the use of this programme. I have a BBC DVD box set I want to rip to my PC. When I used Prism I got the message it couldn't open the file and the reason might be it is probably encrypted. I then tried with a DVD my PA brought in with her and I tried ripping that with Prism and got the same message. Arthur gave me some advice but that didn't work either and I still get the same message. I have the trial version of Magic DVD installed and that ripped the video my PA brought with her although the quality was garbage, I need to tweak the settings. I'll do that once I decide if I'm going to buy it or not. Magic DVD ripper says they have incorporated inscription busting properties in their programme and they can be updated. I was wondering if perhaps the problems I'm having with Prism is due to the programme not having the ability to negate encryption on the disc and that was the point of my original mail. I couldn't remember Arthur's email address and lazily just did a reply to the mail he posted here forgetting the email would go to the list and not to Arthur alone. It could be that part of the problem I'm having with Prism is my not knowing how to use it properly, the help files didn't give a great deal of help but in truth, I don't know the reason. Walter. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dane Trethowan Sent: 05 May 2012 13:09 To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Prism Video Converter With regard to the subject of this message which - according to the subject line - is Prism Video Converter? Work with what? I have only had the control 2.4g speakers which are RF speakers, one is active with it's own amplifier and the other is passive. I haven't heard of the "On-Tour" speakers. I can only say that I am mightily impressed with the quality of JBL and when the day comes to replace my Mission 735 floor standing speakers, I will spend the necessary money to get a high end pair of JBL speakers as a replacement. The Control 2.4g speakers are a perfect match for working with my PC. Incidentally, they also have an input for line in so you don't have to use the RF feature and also it has an output for a sub woofer and I've linked up a 10 inch warfdale subwoofer to work with them but if they were to be used as monitors for editing then there is no need for a subwoofer. Re: JBL "Onbeat Air" speaker system
Hi. You won't be sorry about getting JBL. I have a pair of JBL active RF speakers and they are incredible. They are small but so powerful and the quality of sound is unbelievable. I use them with a Warfdale 9 inch sub-woofer and the resulting sound is wonderful and that is linking them to my PC. They also can be driven via line in but I use the RF option and it is surprising how good the sound quality is for such small speakers. In fact I have a high end Hi-Fi system in my living room but the combination in many ways matches and sometimes surpasses the highe end stuff. I'm sure you will enjoy your new purchases as the next time I buy new speakers it will most likely be JBL. Just ordered one of these speaker systems, expecting it Monday so I should be able to give you all a good "wrap" of the device then. This system is "Airplay" compatible thus you can stream music or video from your Mac, Computer or IOS device to the system, also contains an aux-in jack and a USB port for those people who don't have "Airplay" devices. Has an iPhone/iPod/iPad compatible dock so you can connect the device directly if you so desire. You're looking at around $200.00 in the U.A. for one of these systems and that to me is a bargain. There is a JBL system above the "Onbeat Air" called the "Onbeat Stream", its a little more powerful and will also allow bluetooth streaming, had I known of the existence of this model then I probably would have bought it, ah well at, at least I can keep saving and its like the old story with the Altec Lansing Expressionist Plus and Expressionist Ultra speakers which worked themselves out in the end .
