I,
If you ever want a $400 set of USB speakers, Bose has a good set of PC speakers.
Sound Companion 5
I absolutely love them.

Hi folks,
I am going to have to purchase a new PC. I have some rather old speakers on my
very old PC, and I’m going to get rid of them. There about half shot anyway. So
I wonder what folks are using on PCs these days that actually sounds good. I’m
talking to a custom builder, and he was talking about just the sort of speakers
that would plug into a line out Jack. I have a pair of b and w MM ones on my
Mac, those are USB. And I’ve had them for a few years. They are very nice, but
I’m not sure I need something like that on a PC where I probably won’t listen
to boatloads of excellent music. Still, regular cheap computer speakers are
really not what I’m looking for. Any suggestions?

to the Bose radio, and it's supposed to give the true nature of the sound;
but I've listened to this CD with surround sound, and it sounds great! I'm
wondering though, how can you fully appreciate a symphony or jazz
performance in stereo, when you can more fully determine the direction of
where the instruments are in the performance? I guess I can appreciate
this, because I was in my high school band and chorus! This is just my
personal opinion, but I feel that I can really appreciate that fact!

To me, at least, as well as to many (most?) audiophiles, being in the middle
of a movie soundtrack (no matter how good the cinema's sound system) sounds
quite different from being in the middle of a live concert performance. And,
it is the latter sort of feel that we strive to reproduce in our home

Hi T. J.! No, I think I meant that with that CD, I could get the
directionality, and know where the instruments were by listening to it with
my surround sound. What I'm saying is, that if you just listen to classical
music in stereo, you really don't get the directionality that you get when
you listen to a symphony with surround. That could be said for big band
music and jazz! And also, for example, listening to Billie Joel's We Didn't
Start the Fire with surround, you get a great feeling with the rear speakers
with the effects they used. Maybe it was before a live audience, but it
still sounded good.

Yes. With two speakers, you can do a lot (virtual surround sound is one
fact). I'm actually looking for a new stario system for my room, and will
probably end up getting a mini system, because of course, in my room, I have
no room for a home theater system (or I'd buy one, if I was that into
movies). If I have good base, I'll be fine.

I found a couple reasons why for music 2 speakers is the best way to go. I
don't like that so much reverb gets added to radio on many systems, as if
you listen to some talk at times they sound like they're in a public
bathroom. Music sounds better as recorded, with some equalization and
automatic gain control, but I'm not fond of the added echo. A few systems
 I
heard at stores automatically add enough compression to things that radio
 at
all sounds bad, probably sounds fine for other sources, didn't have a CD
around when I checked stuff out or the knowledge of what the
 manufacturers
actually call it to find where the setting is controlled. That said, most
systems you check out are probably not at factory default settings as many
people play around to see what they can do, and there are many features
 and
options that can be set these days.

automatic gain control, but I'm not fond of the added echo.

 Hi Gary,
Oh interesting. In my opinion not all kind of stuff works well in
surround sound. But movies and such do.
Also professional sound cards do have a build in surround decoder.

For gaming and such I have a nice set of Creative Inspiron 5700
 speakers.
But I still bring my music with me to the stereo, if I want to relax
 with
 some good music.
But a good set of speakers stereo or surround and a good sound card may
give you a great listening experience.
Just remember that mmp3 music is not at all top of the world in quality,
and this get more noticeable as better a lout speaker system you have.
But there is a trend going on with brand new and much better audio
formats especially for us, who like exelent quality.

Hi Bryan! And I think that'll be a good idea when I get my sound

hooked to my computer. It may be pretty subjective, but since this is
 the
time of year for parades in the states, I'll state that I noticed that
 when
I watch a parade with surround sound, the bands and everything go from
behind me to in front of me, so if you'll be listening to a parade on
 your
 pc, you may notice this!

The problem with any surround sound system, is that you must, for the
best effect be in one exact spot to get the effect intended by the

Hi Jerry! I listen to movies and television shows with my surround
 system,
and I really enjoy it, and I also really enjoy listening to music with it.
I think it would be perfect for gaming on the computer. I think it could
even be quite helpful for blind people when using their games with the
computer. Just my two cents worth.

2005-12-29 Thread Dana S. Leslie
Garry,

To me, at least, as well as to many (most?) audiophiles, being in the middle
of a movie soundtrack (no matter how good the cinema's sound system) sounds
quite different from being in the middle of a live concert performance. And,
it is the latter sort of feel that we strive to reproduce in our home
listening environments.

Listening to good jazz or classical music through a surround sound system
always makes me feel as though I'm in a movie theatre, not a concert hall,

Hi Bryan! And I think that'll be a good idea when I get my sound system
hooked to my computer. It may be pretty subjective, but since this is the
time of year for parades in the states, I'll state that I noticed that when
I watch a parade with surround sound, the bands and everything go from
behind me to in front of me, so if you'll be listening to a parade on your

Re: Good PC Speakers

2005-12-29 Thread Brian Olesen
Hi Gary,
Oh interesting. In my opinion not all kind of stuff works well in surround
sound. But movies and such do.
Also professional sound cards do have a build in surround decoder.

For gaming and such I have a nice set of Creative Inspiron 5700 speakers. But I
still bring my music with me to the stereo, if I want to relax with some good
music.
But a good set of speakers stereo or surround and a good sound card may give
you a great listening experience.
Just remember that mmp3 music is not at all top of the world in quality, and
this get more noticeable as better a lout speaker system you have.
But there is a trend going on with brand new and much better audio formats
especially for us, who like exelent quality.

Re: Good PC Speakers

2005-12-29 Thread Gary Wood
Hi all! I write to say that my thoughts on this subject aren't meant to
suggest that I don't value other opinions on this subject. I don't know if
mine are right on this; but I have a classical CD that I got when I listened
to the Bose radio, and it's supposed to give the true nature of the sound;
but I've listened to this CD with surround sound, and it sounds great! I'm
wondering though, how can you fully appreciate a symphony or jazz
performance in stereo, when you can more fully determine the direction of
where the instruments are in the performance? I guess I can appreciate
this, because I was in my high school band and chorus! This is just my
personal opinion, but I feel that I can really appreciate that fact!
Cheers.

Hi Dana. Thanks! But I think that listening to music is a subjective
thing, and maybe in my humble opinion, a good listening experience may be
different with different people. Again, just my two cents worth, or maybe a
little more than you may want! Loll.

Re: Good PC Speakers

2005-12-29 Thread Brent Harding
I found a couple reasons why for music 2 speakers is the best way to go. I
don't like that so much reverb gets added to radio on many systems, as if
you listen to some talk at times they sound like they're in a public
bathroom. Music sounds better as recorded, with some equalization and
automatic gain control, but I'm not fond of the added echo. A few systems I
heard at stores automatically add enough compression to things that radio at
all sounds bad, probably sounds fine for other sources, didn't have a CD
around when I checked stuff out or the knowledge of what the manufacturers
actually call it to find where the setting is controlled. That said, most
systems you check out are probably not at factory default settings as many
people play around to see what they can do, and there are many features and
options that can be set these days.

 Hi Gary,
Oh interesting. In my opinion not all kind of stuff works well in

Also professional sound cards do have a build in surround decoder.

For gaming and such I have a nice set of Creative Inspiron 5700 speakers.
But I still bring my music with me to the stereo, if I want to relax with
 some good music.

Hi Bryan! And I think that'll be a good idea when I get my sound system
hooked to my computer. It may be pretty subjective, but since this is
 the
time of year for parades in the states, I'll state that I noticed that
 when
I watch a parade with surround sound, the bands and everything go from
behind me to in front of me, so if you'll be listening to a parade on
 your

You can think of your computer as just another audio source like
 a
 CD
Player, a radio tuner, a tape deck etc. Make your computer one of
 the
components of your hi-fi. Your computer probably has a mini stereo

Hi Andre,
I purchased these speakers August 2003 find them to be excellent hi-fi for
pc,
frequency response of 20Herz to 18kHz.
AltecLansing VS4121 speakers from BestBuy.com $130.

Consists of two movable satelyte midrange speakers with tweeters attached
one separate subwoofer that stands 10 inches high on the floor giving more
than adequate bass even for pipe organ.

These suit me more than any others I've had including Boston Acoustic.

These rival my home stereo system which is impecable!

Re: Good PC Speakers

2005-12-28 Thread jaffar
Hi. Personally, I have never found pc speakers to be as warm sounding or as
robust as connecting my pc to my Hi Fi set and letting all the sounds or
music from my pc come out of the Hi FI speakers. Somehow, Pc speakers of
whatever make or model manage to sound very flat and unalive to me. Hi Fi
speakers, on the other hand, bring out the best sounds because it is what
they are made for in the first place. Well, only my 2 cents worth. Cheers!

 Hi
I'm looking for a decent pair of speakers, preferably of the 2.1
variety, for playing music. Yes, there are hundreds and hundreds of
brands and models out there but if I were to use the words
clarity, projection and warmth would you be able to name any product
which bears those qualities in its performance?

 Thanks,
 John
