Re: audio queueing was Re: Noise Reduction in Goldwave, I'm probably stating the very obvious

2010-08-21 Thread Colin r . Howard
Greetings,

I am copying this to friends not on the list (for their own information and
possible comment).

In my humble opinion, none of you have it right.

firstly, the j, k, l functions were introduced in GW v5.25 it may have been
in v5.22 but I jumped from v5.12 to v5.25 so am unsure. I've checked with a
friend but they are unable to confirm if it was v5.22 or v5.23 both of which
they used, but certainly before v5.25.

Secondly, you are all skating round the markers problem.

You can hear the sound when moving your markers if you do the following
(Note I am using v5.56 here so it may not be exactly the same in v5.57 but I
doubt it will be much different).

1. Press f11, you are now in the play tab within control properties.

2. tab to the item **after** the two winds, you will see by default this is
set to 0.0.

3. If you set a value infront of the decimal point, as you move your
start/end markers, you will hear however many seconds' worth of the sound
you wish. If you place a value after the decimal point, you will hear the
decimal part of a second whenever you move the start/end markers.

I have mine set to 0.150, which means whenever I move my start/end markers,
I hear 15 hundredths of a second.

I played with values and find this to be about right. remember you hear it
**whenever** you move either start or end marker, I do not know if it has
effects anywhere else in the program. I reckon putting anything infront of
the decimal point leads to confusion (but then, I am **very** easily
confused).

Note also, when making very fine adjustments, you will hear rather more than
you actually delete or whatever, meaning in my case with 0.150, moving my
start marker, I hear start marker to 15 hundredths of a second, moving my
end marker, I hear 15 hundredths of a second up to my end marker. If you
are, therefore, deleting, say a lip smack or a mouthy slurp, you will need
to set your zoom level very very closely so as not to pick up surrounding
sounds or remove ambience.

this, I find, is often a fault with so-called professionals, they seem to
forget how artificial removing breaths and/or ambient sounds such as room
echo, make the results seem so unnatural.

I've really only been aware of such things, since using digital editting; I
started to notice them when editting on minidisk which I could do very
precisely but nowhere so close as with digital editting programs.

Well, I reckon I have waffled long enough for now so cheers.

I've never heard anyone claim that the noise reduction plug-ins you get
with Sound Forge have been the best nor have I heard anyone claim that the
noise reduction with Goldwave, Total Recorder or Amadeus Pro are the best,
Audio Engineers I know who work in this field have a good belly laugh when
I talk of these products and noise reduction, they're into things like
Final Cut Pro, Stineberg and similar but the problem for us is that
they're not accessible.

Good evening listmembers.

I quite agree with Dane in my experience with Goldwave which I think
delivers excellent value for your buy. The only feature missing
compared to more high powered sound recording/editing packages such as
studio Recorder is audio cuing during the edit marking operation. Happy

whether it be cueing or scrubbing, can changing of rewind and forward speed
done quickly and easily (in goldwave) without going into menus and dialog

Using a turntable, one grabbed the edge of the record and turned it backward
at whatever speed he chose. To be able to do this in an audio editor would

Hello:

The following is an extract taken from the GoldWave manual:

J, K, L Rewinds, plays, and fast forwards respectively. Playback always
starts at the cursor's position.
Shift+J, Shift+K, Shift+L Makes the playback speed slower, normal, and
faster respectively.

Hope this helps.

Yep it can and I outlined how this was done in an earlier message, you can have
it work just like turning a turntable forward or backward at your chosen speed,
cuing a reel-to-reel tape recorder and so on.

On 13/08/2010, at 9:39 PM, Howard Traxler wrote:

whether it be cueing or scrubbing, can changing of rewind and forward speed

boxes? Possibly a macro key be set to raise the speed and another to lower?
Using a turntable, one grabbed the edge of the record and turned it backward
at whatever speed he chose. To be able to do this in an audio editor would
 be great!

I think you're talking about scrubbing which works in goldwave if you slow
down the rewind and fast forward in
the play options dialog under function key 11. On Thu, 12 Aug 2010 21:08:54

 Good evening, Rick and list.

A sound editor with audio cuing means that you can hear the sound as it is
being selected for some type of manipulation or reprocessing, e.g., marking
an audio clip for deletion or to add a slight echo or reverb. It is
essentially being able to listen in slow rewind or fast forward mode as you
move start and finish markers, thus taking the guesswork out of making very
minor adjustments in setting markers. Let me know if this doesn't clarify.

 Hi folks!

Its been a while since I've played with Goldwave as I prefer to use
Amadeus Pro on the Mac but it doesn't hurt to have fingers in the
Windows pie smile. Anyway to cut a long story short I was given a job
where noise reduction in parts was required as part of the audio
editing, I can handle this stuff quite easily with Amadeus Pro but as
I'd never given the noise reduction function in Goldwave a go before I
thought that the ideal opportunity was presenting itself.

To be frank I was amazed at the quality of the result I got for a first
try and I'm prepared to stand by the claim I'm about to make and that is
the Noise reduction functions of Goldwave rival those which are part of
more expensive products such as Sound Forge. Furthermore, the sections
in the manual describing how the noise reduction system in Goldwave
works are incredibly well written without boring anyone to sleep so all
one has to do if they want to try the noise reduction function is to
read for a minute or so and the have the basic knowledge required to get
 started.

So what's Goldwave worth these days, $59.00 or thereabouts? Damn good
value for money and I'd almost be tempted to say its a Giveaway! when
one also considers its many built-in powerful functions and the fact
that the author has gone out of his way to make this product accessible.

Re: audio queueing was Re: Noise Reduction in Goldwave, I'm probably stating the very obvious

2010-08-13 Thread Dane Trethowan
Yep, just said exactly what I did earlier on today smile, other shortcut key
commands exist allowing you to hear audio round your markers and to nudge the
markers either way in your audio file so if you're looking at things from an
audio perspective then you have Total Audio control and feedback when editing
which I should think is exactly what a blind person wants and Goldwave provides.

Having said all that however, Sound Forge does offer some nice audio editing
feedback, scrub mode isn't nearly as good as that found in Goldwave but all the
cursor movement commands can be used whilst the file is playing and this can't
be done it seems in Goldwave but no matter, if one got into a discussion or
argument about this then one would be incredibly trivial.

Noise Reduction With Goldwave

2010-08-13 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!
Since Noise reduction seems to be a topic of interest to a lot of list members
I thought I’d write a small “getting started” guide if you like for those who
want to give Noise Reduction a go. This little guide assumes that you want to
rid the audio you’ve recorded of a constant background noise, suppose you’ve
recorded from radio and you have some background interference from somewhere so
follow these steps and you may be quite surprised at the results you get and
others feel free to comment or add notes as required.
This guide is written with Goldwave in mind though people with the appropriate
knowledge can adapt it to their requirements, for example if they’re using
Sound Forge, Total Recorder etc.
Go into Goldwave and open the file you wish to work with.
Next scan through the file until you find a portion of background noise on its
own, a quarter of a second will do.
Select this portion of audio and copy it to the clipboard, for added security
you may like to paste the copied portion of audio to a new window and you can
work with this to make the sample of background noise longer should you need to.
Now select all of your audio file you’re working on or all of the portion you
want noise removed from.
Go into Goldwaves menu system and select effects, filters and Noise reduction.
From the drop-down lists of presets select “Envelope from Clipboard” and press
Okay, processing of the envelope and of the audio will start immediately.
So listen to the result and see what you think. If the audio seems expanded
then repeat the steps above though when you select the preset “Envelope From
Clipboard” adjust the “Scale” edit box from 100 to 10, this determines by how
much DB Goldwave Should reduce the noise by, press okay and processing of the
noise envelope and the audio file will start.
Obviously a lot of the noise will still be present so repeat the process of
noise reduction again a few more times with the Scale set at 10% each time,
noise will decrease gradually but you’ll end up with a more natural sounding
audio than you did the first time you tried with the scale set at 100%
Have fun!

Hi,

yes, as long as you have a clip iof just the fan, you could try using the
option where goldwave will use the soundprint from the clipboard. i've had
mixed results, but it's a good place tp start mucking around. Like
anythingg, there are limits on what it can do, and one's own personal
preferences.

Re: Noise Reduction in Goldwave, I'm probably stating the very obvious

2010-08-13 Thread Rob Tabor
Thanks Dane for those GW noise reduction steps. It sounds very logical and
would appear to work. I'll let you know how it goes.

Best regards,

Firstly find a portion of hum which is on its own in the presentation,
this only need be half a second long. Next copy that portion to the
clipboard. Then select the area of audio you wish noise reduction to
occur on.

Then go into the Noise reduction filter and select the preset Envelope
from Clipboard, press preview to see how the result will sound and adjust
settings if and where appropriate, if satisfied then press the okay button
and the effect will be applied.

Hi, David and list.

I have a recording of a presentation and want to get rid of a high piched
hum, which disappears after the woman presenter switched to a wireless
mic. What setting in GW noise reduction would you advise for reducing the
hum to a nearly inaudible level for the first part of the presentation.
Thanks in advance.

Good evening listmembers.

I quite agree with Dane in my experience with Goldwave which I think

compared to more high powered sound recording/editing packages such as
studio Recorder is audio cuing during the edit marking operation. Happy

Hi folks!

Its been a while since I've played with Goldwave as I prefer to use
Amadeus Pro on the Mac but it doesn't hurt to have fingers in the
Windows pie smile. Anyway to cut a long story short I was given a
job where noise reduction in parts was required as part of the audio
editing, I can handle this stuff quite easily with Amadeus Pro but as
I'd never given the noise reduction function in Goldwave a go before I
thought that the ideal opportunity was presenting itself.

To be frank I was amazed at the quality of the result I got for a
first try and I'm prepared to stand by the claim I'm about to make and
that is the Noise reduction functions of Goldwave rival those which
are part of more expensive products such as Sound Forge. Furthermore,
the sections in the manual describing how the noise reduction system
in Goldwave works are incredibly well written without boring anyone to
sleep so all one has to do if they want to try the noise reduction
function is to read for a minute or so and the have the basic
knowledge required to get started.

So what's Goldwave worth these days, $59.00 or thereabouts? Damn good
value for money and I'd almost be tempted to say its a Giveaway!
when one also considers its many built-in powerful functions and the
fact that the author has gone out of his way to make this product

Very interesting! This new scrubbing function using the J K and L keys must
be a newly added feature to GW version 5.57. I don't remember this in
previous versions. If this is so, Goldwave keeps on getting better. When you
add the offer of a lifetime license for about $50 this is an almost
unbeatable bang for the buck. So hang on to those license keys!!

Yep, just said exactly what I did earlier on today smile, other shortcut
key commands exist allowing you to hear audio round your markers and to
nudge the markers either way in your audio file so if you're looking at
things from an audio perspective then you have Total Audio control and
feedback when editing which I should think is exactly what a blind person
wants and Goldwave provides.

Having said all that however, Sound Forge does offer some nice audio
editing feedback, scrub mode isn't nearly as good as that found in
Goldwave but all the cursor movement commands can be used whilst the file
is playing and this can't be done it seems in Goldwave but no matter, if
one got into a discussion or argument about this then one would be
incredibly trivial.

Well the scrub feature of j, k, and l and shifted keys respectively has been in
Goldwave for as long as I can remember and I think I've owned the product for 2
years now, remember when I posted a comparison of Goldware and Sound Forge

Damn good
value for money and I'd almost be tempted to say its a Giveaway!
when one also considers its many built-in powerful functions and the
fact that the author has gone out of his way to make this product
accessible.

Hi!
Since Noise reduction seems to be a topic of interest to a lot of list
members I thought I'd write a small getting started guide if you like for
those who want to give Noise Reduction a go. This little guide assumes that
you want to rid the audio you've recorded of a constant background noise,
suppose you've recorded from radio and you have some background interference
from somewhere so follow these steps and you may be quite surprised at the
results you get and others feel free to comment or add notes as required.
This guide is written with Goldwave in mind though people with the
appropriate knowledge can adapt it to their requirements, for example if
they're using Sound Forge, Total Recorder etc.
Go into Goldwave and open the file you wish to work with.
Next scan through the file until you find a portion of background noise on
its own, a quarter of a second will do.
Select this portion of audio and copy it to the clipboard, for added
security you may like to paste the copied portion of audio to a new window
and you can work with this to make the sample of background noise longer
should you need to.
Now select all of your audio file you're working on or all of the portion
you want noise removed from.
Go into Goldwaves menu system and select effects, filters and Noise
reduction.
From the drop-down lists of presets select Envelope from Clipboard and
press Okay, processing of the envelope and of the audio will start
immediately.
So listen to the result and see what you think. If the audio seems expanded
then repeat the steps above though when you select the preset Envelope From
Clipboard adjust the Scale edit box from 100 to 10, this determines by
how much DB Goldwave Should reduce the noise by, press okay and processing
of the noise envelope and the audio file will start.
Obviously a lot of the noise will still be present so repeat the process of
noise reduction again a few more times with the Scale set at 10% each time,
noise will decrease gradually but you'll end up with a more natural sounding
audio than you did the first time you tried with the scale set at 100%
Have fun!

Yep, the noise reduction in Total Recorder is very good but I'd say the one in
Goldwave is easier for anyone to set up but regardless of all that, Total
Recorder and Goldwave can work hand in hand together and I myself have
suggested in answer to questions about what tools anyone should have in their
audio basket, Total Recorder and Goldwave are indeed must have's.

As I've found with Goldwave when making suggestions, I wouldn't be surprised if
the function could be accomplished somehow now with the software, a hell of a
lot of tricks and extra stuff is available that isn't documented, I believe
that the manual is gradually being rewritten.

Re: Noise Reduction in Goldwave, I'm probably stating the very obvious

2010-08-12 Thread Ann

 Hi,

The noise reduction is adequate in Goldwave as long as you absolutely do
not accept any default settings the program gives you, but are willing
to play around with it a bit. Soundforge has a better Noise Reduction
program, and you can even use this plugin in Goldwave to a certain
extent. But, Goldwave will certainly do for a lot of simpler noise
reduction tasks.

Re: Noise Reduction in Goldwave, I'm probably stating the very obvious

2010-08-12 Thread Dane Trethowan
Probably a lot of truth in that as I only wanted to reduce some background
noise, I copied a sample of the type of noise I wanted to reduce and used that
for my envelope.

As you say I could have played around a little more but I was happy with the
results I got the first time around, was worried that if I played the result
may have been too Expanded.

The Editing functions available in Total Recorder Professional edition are
nothing to be laughed at though, quite a bit of good stuff in there which would
probably suffice most people in their audio editing jobs let the truth be told
smile.

Depends on what edition you want, I think standard is about $18.00 and
professional is $36.00, video edition I'm not sure of the price at all as I
upgraded from Total Recorder Audio Professional to Total Recorder Video

Re: audio queueing was Re: Noise Reduction in Goldwave, I'm probably stating the very obvious

2010-08-12 Thread Rob Tabor

Good evening, Rick and list.

A sound editor with audio cuing means that you can hear the sound as it is
being selected for some type of manipulation or reprocessing, e.g., marking
an audio clip for deletion or to add a slight echo or reverb. It is
essentially being able to listen in slow rewind or fast forward mode as you
move start and finish markers, thus taking the guesswork out of making very
minor adjustments in setting markers. Let me know if this doesn't clarify.

Best regards,
Rob Tabor

Good evening listmembers.

I quite agree with Dane in my experience with Goldwave which I think
delivers excellent value for your buy. The only feature missing compared
to more high powered sound recording/editing packages such as studio
Recorder is audio cuing during the edit marking operation. Happy
recording and editing.

Good evening, Rick and list.

A sound editor with audio cuing means that you can hear the sound as it is
being selected for some type of manipulation or reprocessing, e.g.,
marking an audio clip for deletion or to add a slight echo or reverb. It
is essentially being able to listen in slow rewind or fast forward mode as
you move start and finish markers, thus taking the guesswork out of making
very minor adjustments in setting markers. Let me know if this doesn't
clarify.

Hi,

well, in gw, one can listen to the selection and set how fast or how slow
the rewind and fastforward plays, so one could half or quarter the speed on
one and speed up the other if one wished. so, as i understand what you're
saying, gw does have this ability.

Right, well if he means scrubbing then Goldwave has the best scrubbing

control the direction whilst shift-j shift-k and shift-l control the speed.

Well don't all audio editors have precise adjustments like that? Goldwave
certainly does, Sound Forge Certainly does and Amadeus Pro for the Mac
certainly does, even Total Recorder to a point certainly does smile.

without boring anyone to sleep so all one has to do if they want to
try the noise reduction function is to read for a minute or so and
the have the basic knowledge required to get started.

So what's Goldwave worth these days, $59.00 or thereabouts? Damn good
value for money and I'd almost be tempted to say its a Giveaway!
when one also considers its many built-in powerful functions and the
fact that the author has gone out of his way to make this product
accessible.

Re: audio queueing was Re: Noise Reduction in Goldwave, I'm probably stating the very obvious

2010-08-12 Thread Rob Tabor

Hi, Richard and list.

We are talking about somewhat different functions here. GW and other audio
packages let you set rewind and fast forward speeds, but what I refer to is
the ability to hear audible feedback as you set markers. However, the
drawback here is pretty minor as it is easy to confirm a selected audio clip
which is done by typing F3 if you don't change the factory default key for
playback 2. I refer to this as sound cuing and another gentleman called it
scrubbing. In essence, this means yyou are able to hear the audio as you
adjust start and/or finish markers to reprocess an audio clip. Hope this
helps.

Hi,

well, in gw, one can listen to the selection and set how fast or how slow
the rewind and fastforward plays, so one could half or quarter the speed
on one and speed up the other if one wished. so, as i understand what
you're saying, gw does have this ability.

Good evening, Rick and list.

A sound editor with audio cuing means that you can hear the sound as it
is being selected for some type of manipulation or reprocessing, e.g.,
marking an audio clip for deletion or to add a slight echo or reverb. It
is essentially being able to listen in slow rewind or fast forward mode
as you move start and finish markers, thus taking the guesswork out of
making very minor adjustments in setting markers. Let me know if this
doesn't clarify.

Hi, David and list.

I have a recording of a presentation and want to get rid of a high piched

What setting in GW noise reduction would you advise for reducing the hum to
a nearly inaudible level for the first part of the presentation. Thanks in

Well perhaps I'm not grasping exactly what you're saying but you can certainly
use audio to adjust your start and end markers with Goldwave, there are
shortcut key commands for doing this, the same is true of Total Recorder.

Firstly find a portion of hum which is on its own in the presentation, this
only need be half a second long. Next copy that portion to the clipboard.
Then select the area of audio you wish noise reduction to occur on.

Then go into the Noise reduction filter and select the preset Envelope from
Clipboard, press preview to see how the result will sound and adjust settings
if and where appropriate, if satisfied then press the okay button and the
effect will be applied.

Good evening listmembers.

I quite agree with Dane in my experience with Goldwave which I think
delivers excellent value for your buy. The only feature missing compared
to more high powered sound recording/editing packages such as studio
Recorder is audio cuing during the edit marking operation. Happy recording
and editing.

Best regards

Subject: Noise Reduction in Goldwave, I'm probably stating the very
obvious

Hi folks!

Its been a while since I've played with Goldwave as I prefer to use
Amadeus Pro on the Mac but it doesn't hurt to have fingers in the Windows
pie smile. Anyway to cut a long story short I was given a job where
noise reduction in parts was required as part of the audio editing, I can
handle this stuff quite easily with Amadeus Pro but as I'd never given
the noise reduction function in Goldwave a go before I thought that the
ideal opportunity was presenting itself.

To be frank I was amazed at the quality of the result I got for a first
try and I'm prepared to stand by the claim I'm about to make and that is
the Noise reduction functions of Goldwave rival those which are part of
more expensive products such as Sound Forge. Furthermore, the sections
in the manual describing how the noise reduction system in Goldwave works
are incredibly well written without boring anyone to sleep so all one has
to do if they want to try the noise reduction function is to read for a
minute or so and the have the basic knowledge required to get started.

So what's Goldwave worth these days, $59.00 or thereabouts? Damn good
value for money and I'd almost be tempted to say its a Giveaway! when
one also considers its many built-in powerful functions and the fact that
the author has gone out of his way to make this product accessible.

Re: Sony Noise Reduction and Goldwave

2008-08-26 Thread Samuel Wilkins
It's because I'm thinking of changing noise reduction because the one in
Goldwave is not very good. If the Sony Noise Reduction plug-in will not work
with Goldwave, could anyone please suggest any good noise reduction plug-ins
that will work with Goldwave or a good noise reduction program?

Hi, believe you can indeed use the Sony noise reduction with Goldwave as
 I'm
pretty sure Goldwave supports Active X plugins.

Hello everyone, I am thinking about buying the noise reduction plug-in
from Sony that Sound Forge uses. I was wondering if I can buy the plug-in
and use it with Goldwave, or do I have to buy Sound Forge as well?
