Hi, Tom,

Yes you can easily do this.
Find the beginning point of the section you wish to save,
press the space bar to stop playback, press the letter B.
Then find the end point,
stop playback and press N.
At this point, you can fine tune the location of the beginning point by
pressing the numbers 1 and 2 respectively for moving this point forward
or backward.

Move the end point with 3 and 4 respectively.
These are the numbers on the top row of the keyboard and not the number
pad.

You can listen to the audio around these two points,
use the F5 and F6keys to hear the few seconds of audio prior to and
following the beginning point,

and F7 and F8 to hear audio before and after the end point.
When your satisfied with these locations, press Ctrl-E to save this
section.

You can edit the original filename to whatever you want it to be.
HTH,
Jeff

You certainly can.

Use the B and N keys to select the beginning and end of the part you
want, then hit Control+E...I think. Anyhow, if I was wrong about the
actual keyboard shortcut, there is a Save Selection in the File menu,
and you can use this to save a part of a file to another file all of its

Re: MP3 Direct Cut Question

2011-07-15 Thread Ann
actually, it is quite accessible, and you can edit MP3's without having
to uncompress and re-compress them. It can also record directly in to MP3.

Just look for the list of keyboard shortcuts in either the help menu or
in the manual, itself.

but, if you need to do any fancier editing, such as noise reduction,
click/pop removal, time stretch etc., then you need something like Goldwave.

There is a little plugin for goldwave that allows one to cut and paste with
mp3's. The only reason I know is that I tried to do it once when I didn't

offered me the download. So I don't know where I got it, but GW should have
it somewhere. Ask their tech support folks. It beats decompressing and

I have several questions about Mp3 Direct Cut. I have figured out much of
the program, but there are still a few things that don't make sense.

First, I don't see the ctrl+arrow keys changing the volume of a selection,
or of anything.

Second, I can't quite figure out what the E shortcut key does.

Third, I see how to create split points either by pause detection or
auto-cue, but I can't see any way to manually insert a split point in a
file.

Fourth, the recording feature appears pretty inaccessible. Has anybody

had

better luck with it?

Fifth, What is high-speed recording? It isn't even described in the

manual,

but it is a menu option and a feature which they tout for the program.

The program is quite useful, but I'd like to understand as much of it as I
can.

RE: mp3 direct cut

2009-02-17 Thread dean martineau
I have several questions about Mp3 Direct Cut. I have figured out much of
the program, but there are still a few things that don't make sense.

First, I don't see the ctrl+arrow keys changing the volume of a selection,
or of anything.

Second, I can't quite figure out what the E shortcut key does.

Third, I see how to create split points either by pause detection or
auto-cue, but I can't see any way to manually insert a split point in a
file.

Fourth, the recording feature appears pretty inaccessible. Has anybody had
better luck with it?

Fifth, What is high-speed recording? It isn't even described in the manual,
but it is a menu option and a feature which they tout for the program.

The program is quite useful, but I'd like to understand as much of it as I
can.

Thanks.

Dean

Hi Jim,

What I do is:

1. Select the beginning and end of the selection with B and N, as you have
done.

2. Select normalize with ctrl+m.

3. Tab to the up/down slider. For me, with JAWS, it shows values such as
39%. I'm not sure what those percentages mean, but up and
down arrow will increase or decrease the volume. You can't actually hear
the results of your change until you press enter on OK,
then play the file around your change. If it is not right the first time,
you can make a further adjustment.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can give me a hand with mp3 direct cut. I have parts
of the file I need to raze the audio level. So I find the part I want to
change and mark the beginning with the keyboard hotkey (B) and end of it
with (N) and when I use the control up or down arrow to change the gain it
takes effect on the entire file. What am I doing wrong?

Re: MP3 Direct Cut

2006-02-24 Thread Jeff Samco
Hi, Andrea,

Here are my personal notes I wrote up when I was first using MP3
Direct Cut. They may be helpful to you and others.
Jeff

MP3 Direct Cut Operating Notes

Page Up to move back or page down to go forward in fairly large time
increments.
Use left and right arrows to move in smaller increments.
Space bar to begin and stop playback.
Ctrl F4 to close a window within MP3 Direct Cut.

Recording
Consider muting Window Eyes.
Press R to open recording screen.
Press P to begin and S to stop.
If Append is checked in the configuration window, stopping and
restarting recording will continue in the same file thus acting as a
pause function.

Marking beginning & end of selection.
Press B for beginning or N for end while playback is stopped.
1 and 2 will adjust begin point B.
3 and 4 will adjust end point N.
These commands move by frame and are quite precise.

To listen to where the B and N marks are, use f5 and f6 to hear
before and after point B; and use f7 and f8 to hear before and after point N.
Use F9 to hear what the audio would be like if you were to delete the
currently selected segment of audio.

To append a file you must be using the older version 1.39:
Open the file to be appended to the end of another file,
Open File Menu and select Append To.
Press Shift Tab to locate file to append it to.
When desired file is found, just press Enter and it is done.
Then close this window with Ctrl F4.

press Control+A to select all, and then I believe the keystroke is
Control+D. This should open up a dialog box like a Windows explorer
window to allow selection of the file to append your open file to.

To delete an audio selection just press Delete.
To save the newly shortened file, use Save All in File Menu.

To save an audio selection open File Menu and select save selection, Ctrl E.

To jump to a specific time in an open file:
Use Ctrl P to open edit field.
The edit field shows total time and current NOW time.
Merely move with right arrow key to type desired time in the NOW
location; press Enter.
Now press space bar to begin playback.

Oh yes, you can certainly do this. Open the file that is to be appended,
press Control+A to select all, and then I believe the keystroke is
Control+D. This should open up a dialog box like a Windows explorer window
that allows you to select the file that you want to append your open file
to, it's that simple. And, it works great.

I don't have the author's name or web address on this PC. I had always had
trouble downloading from his site anyway. All versions are accessible. Do a
google for mp3directcut to find a site thatwill let you download it with
fewer problems. The Lame does have to be in the regular mp3directcut folder
or it will not be recognized. So just copy it to your
c:\program files\mp3directcut

folder then the program will recognize it.

ending of a segment to be cut as many times and wherever in the MP3 that you
desire, then go to cut with your mouse router, then per usual to Save.

Re: mp3 direct cut questions

2004-11-27 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Well, since others have question about this great program, I'll put in a
question of my own.

I have used mp3 direct cut to outline a segment and subsequently cut it using
the cut control
for which I don't believe there is a keyboard command. But it is easily
accomplished using a
mouse key. What I would like to do is to outline several segments to be cut
and then hit the
cut command just once to accomplish the multiple cuts. Thus far, I have been
able to do only
one cut at a time. Is this correct? If not, how does one do it? Thanks.

WOW! This MP3 Direct Cut program is sweet.

One question, though; is there a way to make a tune fade-out at the end.
I've a couple of nice hard to find MP3s that just quit maybe 3 seconds from
the end that would sound better if they would fade-out.

Thanks.

Yes, you can make a song either fade in or fade out;
I've never used it but I recall the manual mentioning it.

MP3DC has a checkbox option to "beep on reaching peak (asterisk)". I think
asterisk refers to the windows sound used. I haven't heard it. Only wonder
if that sound gets recorded as well when recording from the wave device.

Shawn, only that its faster & easier to use, its faster because there's NO
conversion involved, NO .wav files or conversion involved.
When you record with MP3DirectCut, the audio is recorded as MP3 directly,
no
wave files, hence its name:
MP3DirectCut.

But I have played with mp3 direct cut for a little more than an hour but
am not getting the hang of it. I understand a few basics such as
navigating through a file, and setting the advance distance of the page
up and down and the right and left arrows. Beyond that, I am somewhat
in the dark.

Question 1: I want to copy a segment of a large file to a different
file. How do I do this? I do understand how to mark the beginning and
ending points.

Question 2: What are the specific steps to create a cueue sheet?
Question 3: What ar the specific steps to make a recording with this
program?

Sure wish that Harry or some other user of this program would make an
mp3 file showing step by step how to use this program.

Thanks.
Don Roberts

Hi Harry. Can you do pitch shifting with it? And can you use something
like Noise Reduction to get rid of all the excess noises such as hum or
clicks and crackle?

Oh, Sure, I record from Radio 4 BBC nearly every day.
I also record from cassettes with MP3DirectCut, as soon as you press the
space bar when you finish, the recording is saved automatically & as fast
as
you hit the spacebar.
Then you have a great recording, instantly.
You can select whatever bitrates & sampling as you please.
There are numerous features which I haven't found as yet.
You can fade in & fade out.
You can split large files into separate tracks.
I'll never go back to SoundForge or Goldwave.

Re: mp3 direct cut questions

2004-11-09 Thread Harry Bassler
Donald, perhaps the following will help you.
One can rewind and fast forward using

cursor left and right or page-up and page-down. The latter two keys move

faster than the first two. How many frames each pair moves can be set

via the menu system.

b: Marks the beginning of a selection

n: marks the end of a selection

Note, that one can have several selections simultaniously in one file.

To activate a specific selection, one can use the menu system of

Mp3DirectCut.

The following commands use the numbers row above the letter keys, not

the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard. These commands move

by frame. One frame is about a 38th of a second:

1: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the left

2: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the right

3: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the left

4: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the right

With the following keys, one can exactly hear, where the margins of a

selection are:

F5: Plays the two seconds before the left margin of a selection

F6: Plays the first two seconds of a selection

F7: Plays the last two seconds of a selection

F8: Plays the two seconds after the right margin of a selection

F9: Plays the file around the selection as if the block had been cut out

To cut a selection one can press the delete key. This does not touch the

MP3 file. It just modifies an MP3DirectCut index. Therefore, cuts

can be made quickly.

There are also menu options and shortcut keys to save a selection into a

different file.

To split an MP3 file, which consists of a complete album, one can use

the pause detection feature, which can be reached via the menu system.

It will set a marker before each song. These markers are actually

selections with a length of zero. To check the markers, one can go from

one to the other with Control cursor right and Control cursor left. The

file can then be split according to the markers. Or one can save a cue

sheet file or an MP3 DirectCut project file. Both would contain the

markers. With these marker files, one can easily find certain positions

in an MP3 file.

To go to a specific time position, Control-p can be used. The edit box

is a bit strange, don't delete the words in it, just modify the file

position. One has to leave the apostrophes, which seperate hours minutes

and seconds alone. The program needs these apostrophes

Then, there are the recording shortcuts, which I mentioned in my first

message about MP3DirectCut:

r: Opens the record dialog, in which sighted people can adjust the

recording level

p: Starts the recording, when the recording dialog is open

As much as I know, there's no pause function in the program.

s: Stops the recording.

I'm glad you found a product that works well for you, and I may indeed add
it to my arsenal. But I need things like mixing capability for doing my
radio show, the ability to load in and include files of different
bitrates, and so on, and I sincerely doubt that this program can do these
things, so I won't be getting rid of Gold Wave just yet. Plus, for
personal use I prefer Vorbis over MP3, and Gold Wave supports all the
different file formats I need. Thankfully, we have access to the various
different programs that meet our differing needs.

Hi guys,
I looked at the program and I can't undo my edits by hitting control z.
I honestly don't think this program is for me. I enjoy working with wave
files and I can make mp3s with an encoder I've got. Had this been around 2
or 3 years ago with my first computer with a tiny 4 gb hardrive, I might
have considered it. Just my thoughts.

Re: mp3 direct cut

2004-11-09 Thread Bruce Toews
If this program lives up to its name, and I admit to knowing nothing atout
the program as I prefer doing my editing before conversion to MP3, then
MP3 files can be edited without having to decompress them.

Cris, I use the PM3DirectCut program all the
time, mostly for copying
cassettes into my pc.
I also use it to record plays & stories from the
BBC on Radio 4 & then
afterward edit out any unwanted portions such as
Jaws speaking to me
prior
to the onset of the recording.
It is not the easiest to learn but when you get
there, you'll love it.

Has anyone ever used this
program, and would you say that it is worth
downloading. How does it
compare to my absolute favourite, gold wave?

Re: mp3 direct cut

2004-11-09 Thread Harry Bassler
Shawn, only that its faster & easier to use, its faster because there's NO
conversion involved, NO .wav files or conversion involved.
When you record with MP3DirectCut, the audio is recorded as MP3 directly, no
wave files, hence its name:
MP3DirectCut.

Once you mark the beginning and end with b and N, you can use the function
keys f-5 through f-8 to preview and postrol your selection. This will let
you know if you need to move your end points before you make a cut or

anything else.

Yes, Gary, it is very fast, for instance,
if I wish to delete an unwanted commercial from a broadcast that I
recorded
with MP3DirectCut, I find the beginning of the offender, press letter B,
then use the right arrow to find end of offending commercial & press
letter
N.
Then hit Delete keey & the offender is gone that fast.
Its quite easy to navigate thru the audio file because you can hear the
audio while pressing the fast forward or reverse (right or left arrow).
You can also alter the volume of the recorded audio.
There's much more but I haven't learned how to use the additional
features
as yet.
I highly recommend it.

Cris, I use the PM3DirectCut program all the time, mostly for copying
cassettes into my pc.
I also use it to record plays & stories from the BBC on Radio 4 & then
afterward edit out any unwanted portions such as Jaws speaking to me prior
to the onset of the recording.
It is not the easiest to learn but when you get there, you'll love it.

Thank you, Gary. That is much appreciated. Has anyone ever used this
program, and would you say that it is worth downloading. How does it
compare to my absolute favourite, gold wave?
Thanks again,
Cris Hall

Re: mp3 direct cut

2004-11-09 Thread Harry Bassler
Yes, Gary, it is very fast, for instance,
if I wish to delete an unwanted commercial from a broadcast that I recorded
with MP3DirectCut, I find the beginning of the offender, press letter B,
then use the right arrow to find end of offending commercial & press letter
N.
Then hit Delete keey & the offender is gone that fast.
Its quite easy to navigate thru the audio file because you can hear the
audio while pressing the fast forward or reverse (right or left arrow).
You can also alter the volume of the recorded audio.
There's much more but I haven't learned how to use the additional features
as yet.
I highly recommend it.

I think it is a good program once you get the hang of it. It records direct
to MP3 and edits MP3s without converting them so there is no loss of
quality. It also has command line options and it is free.

Simon, here are some shortcuts, which I compiled for aprevious message.
  Hope this helps.

2004-09-08 Thread simon.dowling
ok I have got the files extracted now, the only thing is now each track is two tracks.
is there a way to cut these files at all please?
there were 14 tracks in the mp3, I set the pause to 10, which gave me twice so 14
tracks are separated in to 7 mp3s.
would be grateful if someone could tell me how to split these 7 tracks so I can get
the 14 tracks.
cheers!

Simon, I think you can set the threshold for the automatic pause
recognition somewhere in the program. If this doesn'T work, you have to
split the file manually.

I know that the first track is always a junk file.
I think the program is terrific for copying plays & such from BBC Radio 4

The FAQ file is helpful with some explanation.
