Why not add a dividing line on the gallery page to separate out "themed" and "un-themed" submissions? New Lens Series?
I was rereading the Pentax PMA 2001 Press Release for the MZ-S. And I keep coming back to one paragraph that begins: "Along with the launch of the MZ-S, Asahi Optical will also introduce a selection of new lenses and accessories to optimize the MZ-S performance." As far as I've heard, the only new lens designed for the MZ-S is the new 24-90mm f/3.5-4.5 zoom lens. Any rumors, speculation, or pure guess work on what these new lenses may be or when they may be announced? If I remember correctly, "Photography Day" in Japan comes up on either June 1st or July 1st. Could we expect word at that time? Alexander Grigolia - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Bob, I agree that with Pentax, you sometimes have to do some research for info on the equipment, but I can usually get the answer with one phone call to Pentax Colorado. I can only hope that eventually Pentax will have their own IS lenses. If I were just starting out in outdoor photography, I would have to give serious consideration to the Cannon line because of IS. Limited camera (WAS: Good bye LX...)
Shel wrote: > Are we about to embark on another two year rumor parade? What's the > "Limited camera"? I believe the Limited camera is the MZ-1 (I could be wrong of course). Firstly , there will be an MZ-1 (at least one is planned); It's pretty obvious. The MZ-S is, as I understand it, a spin-off of the digital "MZ-D". This may seem like a film version of a digital camera but its more complicated than that. What I believe happened (and is happening) is that Pentax decided to make a digital slr based on their modular upper end camera platform then in progress. Developing of the digital version was probably hurried due to the increase in digital camera sales. This has most likely messed up things somewhat and paved the way for the MZ-S. The Pentax upper level camera platform is likely designed around the same philosophy as the MZ-series; that is a highly modular and flexible camera platform where several models can share all vital internal parts but still come through as very different cameras. Eg. they share shutter which can be had in 1/6000s max or a high strung version with 1/8000s; Film transport is obviously modular since the "MZ-D" does without it; circuitry board is probably the same on all incarnations - different features set can be activated - different interfaces can be adopted; body is diecast and its easy to make a totally different body for different interpretations of the platform. The system is probably designed for flexible production and can probably sustain low production volumes and niche models. Because all K-mount Pentax users are potential customers for a K-mount digital slr, its likely that Pentax choose a camera with an interface that fuses the philosophy between all the older K-mount slr's in order to try to appeal to as many Pentax users as possible; the MZ-D(S) is fundamentally a cross between an MZ-3 and a Z-1p. Somebody at some point decided that the fusion between new and old Pentax values wasn't just something for a digital slr but also a fine idea for a film based camera - the MZ-S. It was most likely also a means to fill the hole after the Z-1p and the LX quickly. Its also very likely a meeting point (and a bridge product) between the extremes of Pentax future line-up as well. Hence the MZ-1 - the conservative and small pro grade camera. Its quite obvious that such an MZ-1 won't have 5fps motordrive etc. simply because the MZ-name signify small size. Also, its obvious that the MZ-1 won't be MZ-S like. So its most likely conservative. Whats more, those who will stay with film the longest are probably the traditionalists; hence, the MZ-1. For those who want 5fps etc. the platform will be used for a larger camera that is possibly named something with the letter "S" (S-1?; hence MZ-S - the meeting point between MZ-series and S (series?)). This camera will be feature laden and most likely be the conceptual Z-1p sucessor (not direct sucessor; as it will cost way more) and adopt Z-1 style interface. The MZ-S will be a perfect back-up camera for this model. I believe what we're seing here is quite oposite philosophy than behind the LX. The LX was time consuming and expensive to make but gave the user all kinds of LX system accesories to custom their camera. What we may see now is more customisation directly from the factory which is probably cheaper. Its niche marketing at work. Anyway, both the Limited lenses and the MZ-S shown that Pentax thinks niche and that their product are more precisely targeted than ever. It works! (at least by monitoring shutter speed sound - I'll get the film developed today or tomorrow). I attached a Tilt-a-Mite to my LX with K50/1.2 set to auto, put in an M2B (saving my cases of 11Bs and 22Bs for other projects). When I set the aperture to f/1.2 in a darkened room, meter reads 1/15 sec for 800 ISO. Fire - seems faster than 1/15 (maybe 1/60-1/100). I set the aperture to f/8, and read ~4sec for exposure, another M2B, and the shutter closes at the same rate as in the first shot (1/60-1/100s). Amazing camera. :) I think I might need to get another LX just for this feature alone as only a OTF metering system could accomplish this feat. I'm enabled. The loss of K25 that is most distressing is not about fast Vs slow film, but rather about color accuracy. Many of today's E6 films have finer grain and are sharper than old K25 but lack it's color accuracy. Recently read an article by a fellow who makes a living chronicling flower and plant species and he was making this point. I have not used K25 for some time now, because like most people I go for the bold, larger than life, colors in my nature pictures. For people pictures, where accurate skin tones are important, I use negative film. Cheers, Mike. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Lack of courage can be cured with the stuff they sell at the local liquor store. Here's a tip: select a picture that is not fully worthy, scan it at high resolution, open it in your favorite graphics editor, and then crop like mad. One of the most common faults in photography (or should I say snapshooting?) is failure to get close enough to the subject. Cropping away the extraneous surround can go a long way toward turning a ho-hum photo into something not too bad, after the fact. Besides, submitting to PUG will make you pay closer attention to what you see through the viewfinder. Don't worry about criticism, if any. Re: Gallery Themes
Uh-oh. If you notice my submission for May, it was shot (about 25 years ago) on a Praktica, with a Soligor lens. Nary a Pentax piece of equipment to be seen. My justification: 1. I wanted to be a Pentax owner, but couldn't afford one at the time, and I bought the cheaper Praktica, hoping to upgrade to screwmount Pentaxes in time. It only took me about 22 years! 2. I am currently a "Pentax User", so I figured I could squeeze this one in on a technicality. This will be an exception for me, as I doubt that I'll be submitting any of my older piccies in the future; I just really liked this one. Re: Buying an MX
Hi, there are 2 problems which seem quite common with MXs: 1) the frame counter stops working. I've had this happen on 2 of mine. It's fairly cheap to have it repaired, provided the repairer can get the parts. 2) the shutter release lock sometimes doesn't do the job 100%, so that there is still some play in the shutter release. This can switch on the metering circuit. So if you store an MX which has this problem with some pressure on the release - eg the top of your bag or case - it will drain the batteries. Over the years I think I've owned 4 MXs, and I still have the first I ever bought, from 1979/80. Other than the problems described above they've been very reliable. The only other problem was one whose film advance would intermittently jam. I didn't try to repair it, but traded it in against an LX. --- Bob mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sunday, April 29, 2001, 12:28:05 PM, you wrote: > I am thinking of buying an MX to complement my MZ-5n, have any of you guys any tips >on what to look for with this particular model if buying second/third/forth hand? > Much appreciated > Paul - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Holy crap, Steve, that has to be the coolest lens I've ever seen! Congrats. Just looked it up in my faithful "Asahi Pentax Guide", and it (the lens, not the book) weighs in at around 16 1/2 pounds! No wonder it comes with a tripod. Does the lens case have little wheels on it so you can drag it around airports? I also notice that it has manual aperture. Anyway, have fun with it. It won't be too useful for architecture (unless you're standing five miles from the building), but for the July open gallery, hopefully we'll see a shot from it on PUG. regards, frank Steve Larson wrote: > Hi, > I won an ebay auction for a SMC Tak 1000/8. It can certainly be a problem at times, and to attach a filter after preparing for the shot is the most ridiculous suggestion I've heard in ages. Perhaps that's acceptable if you're photographing an object that's not going to move, or one that's in static light, but for people and street shooting, and subjects that are moving, it'll never work. RE: Lenses < 28 mm (was RE: Gallery Themes)
I like that one as it evokes a emotional response to the feeling of a lone runner in the forest at morning. It makes me feel the isolation. -Original Message- From: Dave Maki [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, April 29, 2001 12:55 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject:Re: Lenses < 28 mm (was RE: Gallery Themes) Thanks, Kevin. I doubt that the bodies AF motor is direct drive, I assume that it is geared as the shaft rotation speed is quite slow (relative to the speed of even a high torque DC stepper motor). But in any case the AF shaft on the AF TC that I own spins quite freely and is extremely unlikely to introduce even the slightest extra load on the system. I would assume that if the TC was badly designed and the AF shafts did not couple correctly then maybe this would cause a slow-down of the AF speed otherwise I can't see how this might occur. Re: Vivitar Flashes
I got knocked on my butt when I touched the frayed power cord of my Honeywell Strobonar 882 with wet hands. It uses that 500+ volt Eveready 497 battery, but I don't know what the trigger voltage is. I generally use the old Honeywell potato masher only with my Mamiya C220 or as a slave, but I've been wondering if it can be used with the LX. Paul "David A.
