Nah, it's not - it was pence or pennies. Then of course the Govinm'nt went
and stuffed things up by keeping the old pound at it's then value and having
100 new pence to a pound, so we had to divide all our old prices by 2.4 to work
out what they were in new pence. Should have had a new pound worth 100 old
pence - then it would have been easy. For example, an item costing a shilling
would then have cost 12np, something at half-a-crown would have been 30np, and
so on. We all knew how many pennies there were at any given price, but the
sale of calculators went up (by 2.4 times?) when we decimalized.

A note about this just came in on the Editorial Photo mailing list. Looks like
the courts are addressing the question of search engines creating thumbnail

Fast Search and Transfer grepped all the stuff from the PUG. In the case in
question, however, the search engine snagged *full-sized* copies of the images
in question!

USB Camera and Microscope

2001-08-22 Thread Doug Franklin

Howdy, folks,

I ran across a press release about a digital camera and microscope that
connects to your computer using USB. It can work at "normal"
magnification levels, but also comes with a 50X lens for microscopy.
They have as accessories 100X and 200X microscopy lenses, a 1X lens,
and a "C-ring lens mount adapter". The photos on their web page show an
extreme closeup of some sort of insect on the screen of a laptop
computer to which one of their cameras appears to be attached. And now
we've exhausted my knowledge of the device. :-)

Re: Sports photographer mentality?

2001-08-22 Thread Frank Theriault

I don't disagree with you, David. Pointing a camera with an 8 or 12
frame auto winder at a moving object at a sporting event, and trusting
that you'll get a few good shots may not be "art", or "fun". Anyone
who's looked at PUG over the last few months will see that over the years
I've shot a few moving bikes and cars, all with an old manual body (and
I'm sure it shows!).

I'm quite content with the results that I've gotten by trying to capture
shots in that matter - not that I'm any good at it or anything.

OTOH, were I a "pro" (I shudder to use word!), I'd be out there
shooting the most frames I could per second, with a bulk film holder,
etc, etc. When ya gotta make a living at it, and ya gotta get a shot
that's publishable...

frank

I don't know anything but whats been posted. I found it on Photo.net.

Anyway, it seems to me to be just tweaking of the current model. Adding MLU and making
it ready for the new flashes. The rest is just making the "buried" custom functions
available without taking it to service.

Two new Pentax 67 lenses

2001-08-22 Thread Pål Jensen

Also found on Photo.net:

SMC 75/2.8 AL (7el./5groups, 61 deg., min.f/22, min.dist.0,41m, filter 67, hood
included, weight 560g.)

ZOOM SMC 90-180/5.6 (10el./10groups, 53-28 deg., min f/45, min.dist.1,2m, filter 95,
hood included, weight 1160g.)

I was told about a year ago(?) that there would be zoom lenses for MF systems.
However, I was told there would be two. Hopefully this means that another will come at
a later date. 645 system perhaps?

Speaking of the AF 280T flash ...

2001-08-22 Thread Joe Wilensky

With this flash being mentioned in a few recent posts, I remembered a
question I have about my use of this flash.

I recently got the wide-angle and tele adapters for the flash head,
and my query is: Are the adapters useful or necessary when bouncing
the flash, or only when using direct flash? It seems bouncing the
flash spreads it out anyway, so would the wide angle adapter be
redundant in that situation (or even cut down on the overall light
output)? And does narrowing the flash beam with the tele adapter
matter once it bounces off a ceiling?

Also, a question about using fill flash with this flash and a Super
Program -- since the Super Program can't adjust flash exposure
independently of ambient exposure, one way to play with adjusting the
ambient light in the photo would be to slow down the shutter speed.
But the flash causes the camera to select the synch speed, and the
shutter speed then can't be changed (even with the camera in manual)!
The one way around this is to switch the flash to all manual, which
doesn't send the flash-ready signal to the camera, and thus not
setting the shutter speed, but then I lose TTL and auto flash
exposure options. Is this an accurate picture (pun intended?) of the
capabilities of flash compensation with this flash and the Super

2001-08-22 Thread Rob Brigham

Refers to our disagreement RE his review of the MZ-S.

In a review of the Monolta Dynax 5, he says:

"In a recent test I commented that a particular camera was
underspecified. The replies of some readers went along the lines of,
'Of course it is, as the manufacturer was trying to make the camera
small, light and portable'. Well here is a camera that is smaller and
lighter than others in its class, but still manages to knock out three
focused frames in a second of a moving subject. That is quite some
achievement."

He had to have the last word didnt he?

He is obviously still rather upset that we didnt agree with him, and
still misses the point regarding build quality which was second only to
the sloping top plate in Pentax design goals for the MZ-S.

On a high school trip to New Orleans, some friends and I were busy
seeing who could stay awake the longest (yes, I know, but it was high
school), so we were at a 24-hour Denny's across the road from our hotel,
drinking coffee in the middle of the night when we were approached by a
group of Texans who had been at the next table and overheard us talking
and deduced that we were Canadians. Since they were on a trip with
their French club ("We were gonna go to Kweeebek but Lord its just too
cold"), they demanded to hear our French. We indulged them, and they
told us, astoundedly, "Y'all sound lahk the peey-pul on thuh taypes!"

We hung out for a while, and finally we started asking to hear THEIR
French. Let me tell you, if you have not heard a Texan speak French,
you're missing one of life's greatest treasures. I will carry the
sounds of "Pahhr-lay vw frahn-saeeyyy" in my heart until I die.

Thanks for your comments. What I saw with my eye in the reflections on the
cars roof appealed to me, but I couldn't get a good shot of both the
reflections and the wheel, and without the wheel, the reflections were
incomprehensible. This shot was the best I could get at the time showing
both. On reflection (pun intended), I agree with you; the shot would be
better if I crop out the automobile roofs.

Thanks again for your helpful comments.

image people will enjoy.
I now have a D1 i use at some events to sell "on site" pictures
and i noticed a new company shooting a show last week. The
one "shooter" sat on a hill and did the same thing, hold in the
shutter and shoot. Most of her shots were to early or late over the
jumps or caught the ass end over the jump and i heard many people
comment that my work was a lot better, will you be doing the next show
instead of these people. It took me over a year to get my timing down
and never would if i shot like that.

Rant over Thanks

Anyhow, the one thing that I noticed - as did the squadron
photographer I showed them to and two non-photographers, was that the
photographer was burning film.  It amazed me that he took four to six
consecutive shots (mash down the shutter release button) of people
standing
over timing chips, inspecting their bicycle, making a transaction in
the
sports expo.  On the other hand, I would see an interesting shot in
my mind
and then take one maybe two shots when I thought the moment to be
right.

Is his style attributable to a sports photography mindset
perhaps?
Not being in the profession, nor having talked to many who are I
figured I
would tap the vast knowledge of the list.

Re: Fisheye Dilemma

2001-08-22 Thread Albano_Garcia

From: "Peter Jordan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
I am contemplating indulging myself in a fisheye lens.
I have the choice between the 16mm f/2.8 A and the 17mm f/4 SMC.
However, the 16mm A lens is going for almost twice the price of the 17mm.
(GBP 375 vs GBP 200)
Does anyone have any views on how the two lenses compare, and is the 16mm
worth the extra?

Hi, Peter.
I own the 17mm 4 SMC. It's a lovely lens, very well built, and gives
excellent results. I never used the 16 mm, but I suppose the extra
milimeter is not noticeable, being the major difference the extra stop and
the A setting.
You must decide if you need the extra stop and the A setting based in the
bodies you own and the situations you shoot. I use only the LX, so I don't
mind about the A, and f4 gives a good image in the LX finder. I usually use
it stopped down to f8 or f11, so I don't mind about an extra stop.
You can consider the Zenitar 16 2.8. It seems to be a good performer based
on the praises it receives in the list, and it's way cheapo on ebay.

At least for the "American" gallon, it's 32 times 4 (Four quarts in a
gallon) or 16 times 8 (pints). Being red-blooded American beer-drinking

Exactly. I don't think Mauldin ever says exactly where Joe and Willy
are from, but they are definitely country boys rather than city boys.
I'm left with the impression that they came from _way_ out in the
country since they're even more countrified than the hillbillies in my
family. :-)

For anyone that's interested, Mauldin's book "Up Front" has recently
come back into print. It is a compilation of a couple of hundred of the
"Joe and Willy" cartoons, and some explanations and some of Mauldin's
background.

Hi Gianfranco,

"Furriners" means "foreigners". The "Willy" and "Joe" characters in the
strip were likely representations of rural American country folk from
somewhere deep in America's heartland, who had probably never seen any
"furriners" in their lives, much less been to a foreign country. In fact,
"Willy" and "Joe" might not even pronounce the word "foreigner" correctly;
thus, the phonetic representation "furriner". (If you've ever read some of
American novelist Mark Twain's work -- "Huckleberry Finn" or "Tom Sawyer" --
you have a flavor for this type of character.) This is the cartoonist's
light-hearted attempt, I think, to poke some fun at how we Americans were in
many respects culturally isolated from the rest of the world. Not ~all~
Americans, but certainly many of the young boys who came from throughout a
rural America, mired in an economic depression, in order to fight (and
sometimes to die) on foreign soil in faraway places.

Hope this helps.

P.S. -- And by the way, those of you who pointed this out are absolutely
correct. In one of my posts yesterday, I said "farthings" when I should

of the embarrassment.
So, he worked hard and harder! "I will not go back to that shop until I

He walked back into the same shop and said "g'day mate, I would like an

If you really want to get into this pagan burning thing, I know
a couple of witches you can have for next year.

(For the PC amongst us, please note that witches can be of
either gender)

Re: Interesting question about digital: Infrared

2001-08-22 Thread Frantisek Weyda

Dear friends,

I agree with those of you confirming possibility to do infrared
photography with digital camera (for instance with some of Olympus digital
cameras). That question is complex, but we have obtained lot of results
(application mostly in biology and in other fields, too) in the framework
of our research program "Scientific digital photography" in my Laboratory
of digital photography in entomology. Those results will be ready for
scientific publication soon. All news concerning it as well as other
subjects will be accessible in the future on our web site

Re: Asahi vs Honeywell

2001-08-22 Thread Jody

I was referring to some of the roads we drove on when
in Western Australia, where there is a c.3m strip of
tarseal down the centre, and the edges are dirt. So
you drive in the middle until you meet someone, then
both move over to the side to get past.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, and will return
someday.

Jody.

I met this guy from Dallas, Texas, while travelling
between islands in New Zealand. I had great difficulty
in understanding a single word he said. I even had to
ask him to spell "Dallas" before I could understand
where he was from :-)
He said New Zealand was very cold. Well, what did he
expect in the middle of winter!

So you live about 113 kilometres from Fort Worth,
then?

Speaking as a non maths-impaired foreigner, I usually
think of 50.8mm as 2 inches :)
