You can do it that way, but you have to be careful of the hotshoe
connector on the flash that is off camera, so I always use adaptors on
the bottom. Of course if I didn't own the adaptors (I managed to find
quite a few going cheap with flashes which is why I have so many - the
full set of 5p accessories in fact) I'd connect 2 flashes without the
connectors and insulate the hotshoe contacts.

You use the hotshoe on the bottom of the flash like this

Camera to AF400FTZ mounted on hotshoe out via 5p connector on flash to
AF240FT hotshoe via Off camera flash adaptor F out via 5p socket on
flash to another AF240FT the same way and then into a Sigma EF430 via a
hotshoe adaptor F that has had it's bottom fins removed so it doesn't
short out on the stand holding the flash (this is easy to do if you
have a small phillips head screwdriver).

OK - I've tried, unsuccessfully, to check the m-42 adapter with my
Spotmatic. I am not at all sure what I am doing here! Part is my
unfamiliarity with the screw mount cameras, more is that I continue to be
baffled by the T-4 mount.

I have two different M-42 adapters. One is marked P/ES and the other PX.
from reading Danilo Cecchi's book, I think that the PX must be the older
"semi-automatic" coupling where you need to press a small lever after a shot
to reset the lens. And I think that the P/ES is the newer fully-automatic
coupling, with a slide switch to select A or M. Sound about right? I have
been able to mount the PX on the lens, but haven't found the right
combination of orientation etc to mount the P/ES.

What I suggest is that I send you the lens (plus caps and filter) and
whichever of the two adapters you want to try. If you can make it work,
great! If not, we can try the other adapter or whatever. Let me know your
preference.

Also, I don't have your mailing address . . .

Pentax does make a 43 mm circular polarizer filter that fits into the drop in
holder of the FA* 600/4.0. I got the part number from a Pentax rep last October,
the part number is 35184. I think that he said the list price is about $550
Canadian. I use a B+W slim series 49 mm circular polarizer in my A* 300/2.8,
it's price was $100 Cdn, I haven't decided if I would use the 43 mm circular
polarizer enough to justify it's price.

Re: Web Site Domains

What he probably meant was ./somedirectory which would be reletive to the
current directory. But it is easier to use directory/file.html which is
reletive to the directory your index.html file is in. e.g.
HREF="trees/fig.html". Which would be base_directory/trees/fig.html wherein
'base_directory is the one your index.html is in.

A bit far, but not t far;
-Tombstone

- Huachuca mountains
Closer in, the Saguaro cacti in the National (?) Forest (?) East South East
of Tucson.

20 years ago I drove through a pass in the Huachuca mountains, just a couple
miles north of the Mexican border, followed a gravel road through cattle
country, eventually got to Nogales, the Mexican border town approximately
due south of Tucson. Nice country.

Put all of my ideas together: head SE out of Tucson, S through Tombstone to
Bisbee, back East to Nogales, north to Tucson. A good long day trip. Or
layover in Bisbee and enjoy dinner at the Copper Queen Hotel . . .

Huh? It's the same stuff, unless you're talking glacial acetic acid, which is the same

Again, white vinegar = dilute acetic acid, though probably not as pure as you would
get from Kodak or Ilford.

Also, a couple of tablespoons probably isn't enough. In that scenario, you're
basically using a water stop.

OTOH, that might not be a bad thing.

New Toy

I suppose, that after all the OT posts I've made tonight, I really

Got a new lens today from eBay. Soligor k-mount f2.5/3.5 35-70mm
two-touch zoom. Only paid $20 for it. Has a small (maybe 2 or 3mm)
scratch on the front element (mentioned in the description). Other than
that, it's in good condition. I guess I'll go get a bottle of India Ink

Looks like a nice lens. All metal, relatively compact. I'll put it on

I love new toys, especially cheap ones...

Not if the shutter itself is leaking. I had a spotmatic SL that had
this problem, and if you changed lenses the fogging was worse.
Never bothered to get it fixed. It's in my spare parts box.

I'm much the same in regard to how quickly I'll process a roll of BW film.
Usually I'm anxious to see it and will process it immediately. I shot two
rolls of my favorite model, Amy, this afternoon and processed them right after
dinner. The negs (Delta 3200 on 6x7) look good, so I'll print at least a few
frames tomorrow. I'll sometimes put off printing the selects for a couple of
days. Quite often I don't print as many frames on a roll as I should, but I
figure they'll still be there if I ever feel a need. (I have several thousand
frames of my kids that I shot in the late seventies that I never printed.
Every once in a while I pull out a neg file and print a few, but I'll never
catch up. )

I find that scanning and digitally printing color negs or transparencies
yields similar rewards in terms of the creative process. The mechanics of the
scan and PhotoShop prep actually allow more control than BW development and
printing. It's another way to have fun with photography. But there's still
something special about those silver prints.

Hi, Tom,

I'm probably wrong (no big surprise), but prior to confederation, present day
Quebec was the colony of Lower Canada, and present day Ontario was Upper

of Canada farther east of Quebec are farther down river...

I dunno.

Since my proclaimation of earlier this evening that Canuck was originally

My late (it fell apart with no provocation) Sigma 28-70/2.8-4 zoom had a hood
that more or less did this; the hood attached (by bayonet mount) to the zoom
collar and the movement of the lens barrel relative to the hood made the
correction.

So I guess Sigma has done *something* brilliantly ... if only they'd made

Indeed. Also, it depends on the lens-maker. My Betacam SX camera (well
alright, it belongs to my employer...) has a Canon lens, and the hood is
rectangular, plastic. As Brendan says, matte boxes are rectangualr and
can be adjusted for shade ability. I've seen a few round hoods, never
tulip, but wouldn't be surprised if I did - aren't they supposed to be
better at avoiding vignetting?

Fixed hoods on zooms are basically a bodge. That is, a compromise. I've
often thought that a brilliant lens hood design would incorporate moving
parts to deepen or shallow-out depending on focal length selected,
automatically.

When filming news, if there's flare, my hand gets used to flag the lens.
If it's, say, an interview for a feature, or something I might spend a
bit of time on, then I carry a French flag in the Land Rover that clamps
onto the camera and shades the lens.

A news cameraman once got so fed up with louts ripping off his lens hood
outside courts if law that he fashioned a metal lens hood with a file,
making the leading edge razor sharp. The hood stopped getting pulled off.

True!

Re[2]: lens shades?

Hi,

I'd have thought a lens hood could be arbitrarily long regardless of
shape as long as it's based on a cone whose angle is not less than the
angle-of-view of the lens. Imagine one of those diagrams that shows
you angle-of-view. If you make a cone that matches that then it could
be 200 metres long if you wanted it to be. You can make it rectangular
if you want, because of course the image area of the film is
rectangular, and that would 'cut off' the unused parts of the image
circle, provided that the diagonal of the rectangle is equal to the
diameter of the cone at the same length. The depth of a lens hood is
generally restricted by the hood being a tube rather than a cone.

Does this make sense? It's the sort of thing that needs diagrams.

Except that you lose the number 1 feature of all digital cameras - the

Without that you cannot edit & delete unwanted pictures and you run out
of precious storage space in no time, or be even more thrifty than large

This is assuming they got enough resolution into the chip which they

Re: OT: eBay tale of woe

>I wish somebody would explain how it works in the EU. My US bank might
>charge something for depositing a Canadian check in Canadian dollars, but
>never for depositing a US check. Why are they charging for depositing a
>check in Euros?

The same reason that my bank here in the UK charges me for depositing a
cheque (as it is spelled here) made out in US dollars. Because there is
admin in figuring out the exchange rate (with all necessary and
unnecessary contributing factors) and then converting the amount and then
getting the US bank on which the cheque is drawn to cough up. Costs time
and money, and there is a charge (similar to yours).

Strangely enough, we have cheques, but aside from eBay transactions,
nobody here uses them. We normally pay for things with debit cards that
transfer money from our 'current account' (your 'checking account') to
the store. Or we use credit cards or AmEx. I pay all my monthly bills
either by standing order (set amount each month from my current account)
or by telephone banking (pressing keys on the phone to decide exact
amounts going out of my account to preset recieving accounts like credit
card bills and so on), or internet banking.

Ten years ago we probably had (as a family) a cheque-book per month, at
least. More recently, but before I met eBay, we got through maybe one a
year! Post eBay, it's two a year, although I am using Paypal a lot.

If I'm buying from abroad (USA usually) I now use Paypal. If not, I go to
a travel agent and I get an AmEx International Money Order, which costs
me, say, £10 on top of the, say, £100 I need to send. I then post the
money order, which is made out in US bucks. Simple. Paypal is simpler but
more expensive.

No Euros here (yet).

Re: OT-English Language-was: Health Warning

2002-03-15 Thread frank theriault

I'm guessing that the word "cheque" (proper spelling) (just joking, American
friends!) became "check" when Webster's first dictionaries came out. If I
recall, he "rationalized" many British spellings so that they were more phonetic
- for instance, "harbour" became "harbor", "centre" became "center", etc.

I, for one, am glad he did it, so that we Canadians can retain our linguistic
purity over you Yanks - ties to the motherland and all!

But, seriously, I agree with your assesment of English, Kevin. It is a wonderful
language, having drawn on so many sources. Certainly, with the demise of Latin
among academics and certain professions over the last couple of centuries,
English has become the closest thing to a universal language - of course that
whole British Empire thing in the 19th century, and then the US being the
dominant economic and military power over the last 100 years hasn't hurt much
either!

If anyone ever gets the chance to see Robert McNeil's "Story of English"
(originally on PBS, but it is available on tape), do so. It's an amazing history
of the language, and traces many or most of the current accents and dialects.
It's wonderful - see it if you can. He even talks about us Canucks using "eh"
all the time! :-)

regards,
frank

I thought these should be packaged together. I'd like at least $240
here based on pricing from KEH and eBay.

> · Pentax 80-320mm f/4.5-5.6 SMC-FA Lens with Morris 58mm UV Haze

Somewhere near $60 seems fair to me.

> · Vivitar 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 Series 1 AF Lens with Hoya 77mm Ultra Thin

These regularly go for mid $130's on eBay. The filter is over $40 at
B&H so over $130.

> · Pentax 28mm f/2.8 SMC-A Lens with Case (purchased used 05/01)

I sold the one I bought new in '83 (with my late SP) and immediately
regretted it. I bought this one on eBay in the mid $70's. The case is
the original one that came with the lens. It has a name on the top
written in pen. I don't have a UV filter for this one.

> · Pentax 50mm f/1.4 SMC-FA Lens with Hoya 49mm UV Filter (original box

This is the lens I'll miss the most. New this is $185 at B&H. I'd like
somewhere over $160.

> · Vivitar 100mm f/3.5 Macro AF Lens with Hoya 49mm UV Filter (original
> box - purchased new 06/01)

This is the best bargain lens I ever purchased! The reviews were "spot
on" regarding it. New it is $140 at B&H. I think around $120 with the
UV is about right.

> · Pentax 85mm f/2.8 Soft SMC-F Lens with Hoya 52mm UV Filter and Soft

My only real splurge lens. The new SMC-FA version is around $400. KEH
has this exact lens for $286. This comes with in a Pentax brand soft
case and a UV. I'd like to get at least $255 for it.

Not really... a circular hood won't vignette more than a rectangular one,
though it will take up more space and may block the built-in flash more.
It's also not a good idea to use rectangular hoods on lenses with a
rotating front element, for obvious reasons. I prefer circular ones
myself for that reason, though I'll use any well-made hood as long as it
matches up with the lens.

The primary reason for using water over an acid stop bath is that, on some
emulsions, there is a danger of developing pin holes due to the liberation

Actually the invasion in 1066 was the best thing that had happened to us;

Now, are you referring to the over digital camera market in general, or
are you just limiting yourself to the Digital SLR market? Because if you
are talking about the overal digital camera market in US, Nikon and Canon
don't even figure in the top 4!

According to the IDC report published for 2001, overall US market share
leaders for the year were Sony at 23%, Olympus at 16% and Hewlett-Packard
at 15%. Kodak came in at #4 after its strong sale in Q4 2001. North
American market represents 47% of the world-wide digital camera market.
Sony, Olympus, Fuji, Kodak and Canon were the top-five ranked worldwide
digital camera vendors.

You can also get interesting deductions from the IDC reports for US market
(I am not able to find the detailed breakdown of the statistics). They
divided the digital camera into various categories: toy digital camera,
"digital camcorder with attachment" (whatever that means), low-end,
point-and-shoot, and digital SLR. Shipments of point-and-shoot digicams
was up 30% to 6.5 million units in 2001. Overall digicam shipments up
only 2% to 8 million units. And low-end digicams accounted for 1.5
million units. So basically, all other categories do not make a dent in
the over camera sales statistics.

I am sure if you use revenue statistics, Nikon, Canon and Minolta may fare
better, but I still don't think they would make the top three. And if you
are the Pentax marketing people looking at these statistics, what
decisions would *YOU* have make??

I don't develop B&W but I do tend to procrastinate going over my
slides. I'm still working on last years ones (which I started in
January; a year after taking them). I'm halfway through October at
the moment. Thankfully I didn't do a lot of shooting last year, and
I'm trying to keep it under control now while I clear out the
backlog.

I only started because my hard drive bombed and I had nothing else
to do in the evenings.

From start to finish it takes me about an hour per roll for 35mm,
much less for 6x7 because there's only 10 frames to sort through, of
which I might mount 3 or 4.

Cheers,

A few years ago I managed to find a cordless phone with an optional
headset attachment. The phone can clip onto your belt. It's really
good being able to walk around with both hands free if someone calls
while you're busy.

Re: I Hate Developing Film

2002-03-15 Thread Mark Cassino

For me it all depends on expectations about results.

Sometimes I shoot a roll (or a few rolls) and ask myself what single image
would be the best on it. Sometimes nothing comes to mind and I loose
enthusiasm and set the roll aside. This is with both B&W I do myself and
with slides that go to the lab.

But if I think I got something, or (more often) if I hope I got something
but have doubts - then it's straight to the lab.

Ironically - the correlation between my expectations and the results is not
very good, and the rolls I delay probably yield more successes than the
ones I rush in.

On a tangent - I have to say that I've come to really appreciate the
latitude that comes with developing your own B&W. It adds another step to
the creative process that's missing from color processing (unless, I guess,
you do your own color processing.)

For negs I just use tap water for one minute, and then two more tanks of
water to rinse, this works for me since I dump my fix. I have heard that
water allows some developer to stay on the negatives and bring out the
highlightsas the less exposed areas don't use the deveolper as quick. I
don't know if it is true but it always sounded good to me.

Re: lens shades?

2002-03-15 Thread Bmacrae

Cory,

The NFL films guys use Arriflex SR2 and SR3 motion picture cameras. The "lens hoods"
for these cameras are usually matte boxes (not "hoods" per se) which accept filters.
Pro video guys actually usually use square hoods (but as you say sometimes circular),
at least those you shoot for TV news (Betacam SP or DigiBeta pro cameras). I don't
know about the lower end DV cams and others as they vary from maker to maker.
As far as the "tulip" design goes, that's a fairly unique SLR lens maker design that's
not used much in film and video work. Sigma was the first company I remember seeing
that had that hood design.

24-90mm, AF280T, 2 Grips, K-1000 for sale update

2002-03-15 Thread Lindamood, Mark

FA 24-90mm, no traces of light use. Box, caps, and papers, of course.

FA28mm (at a fire sale rate).

AF280T flash with case, manual, and the AFW-1 wide-angle (24mm) clip-on
diffuser and case.

330FTZ flash with case, manual, original box (somewhat worn), plus extension
cord 5P (sorry, hot shoe cord adapters not in stock to go with cord). SOLD

Battery grip for MZ-S. New in box.

Grips strap for PZ-1p. New in box.

K-1000 body dates from 1977, so it's got the original internal metal parts
vice later plastic substitutes. Looks as old as it is, but it was recently
serviced by Pentax. Includes the 50mm f2.0 it came with and a Pentax strap
(not the original, the thin one with red letters). Takumar 135mm f2.5 can
also be included (or sold separately) for slight additional consideration.

Flashes have simply been replaced by the 360FGZ. They are both in great
shape.

Grips just aren't needed by my small hands. It was an exercise in learning
to try them out.

24-90mm, essentially brand new, on sale because I've decided to simplify my
approach and have set myself up to use primes on the MZ-S and my trusty
28-105 powerzoom on the PZ-1p. Hey. I just like that authoritative snap to
life when you turn on the PZ-1p with the 28-105 attached.

Please contact off list if you have any interest.

It was $1000 for the processor , $250 for shipping! The old ebay auction
ended well under the guy's $1k reserve, so I just offered him that, plus
$250 shipping.. hopefully he spent the $250 properly :)

I never realised the Lira was that bad off !

I had the seller remove the head and ship \ pack it separately, as I figure
that the unit stands a better chance of getting here that way!

Yep, yep, yep William the Conqueror that's it. The passage in the book I was
thinking about went something like this, Swineherd talking: "Why is it that
when we have to take care of it they call it by the saxon word, but when
they get it on the table all fixed to eat they call it by the french word".

Now remember, I haven't read these books in the last 30 years or so.

You know someone who speaks Old English? He must be really old :).

Pat,

this is exactly what the e-film offers : to allow a replaceable CCD sensor
into a standard SLR.
This principle is ideal in theory, but the company which sells this (silicon
film inc.) faces several severe difficulties :
- the company size is too small to over pass thechnical difficulties...
- it has no financial envergure nor support...
- it is annoyed ("not helped", or "not supported", I dont know the exact
english world...) by the Big SLR manufacturers, which prefer to sell new
SLR's, instead of allowing used SLR's to be digitalized by e-film.

To know more about e-film I enclose the link (those who already know if
forgive me):

Cheers,

Cyril.

Re: Happy B&H Experience

2002-03-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Stephen,

To my thinking, B&H has a serious credibility problem. I once bought a few B+W MC
filters. One of them was to be a 58mm slim. But inside the case was a 58mm non-slim,
worth considerably less.

You can say, "Nobody's perfect." But B&H explicitly writes on their receipt and
elsewhere that every new item they ship is shipped in the original manufacturer's box.
The last thing I want is to get into a my word-against-theirs dispute about what was
actually shipped to me. Fortunately, they believed me--that time. The point is, given
their stated policy, this should never have happened.

Another time, I had written in the online form, "I prefer email, but if you must call
me, call me at my work number." Well, they left a message about a pending order on my
home machine, and my wife heard it.

FS: Several Pentax cameras and other items

2002-03-15 Thread Carlos Royo

These are some Pentax cameras I have for sale, because nowadays they see
very little or no use, and I want to sell them to fund other Pentax
equipment
purchases.

This is the first lot:

Pentax SFX AF SLR body (like new) + Pentax soft case for the SFX + SMC
Pentax-F 35-70 mm. 3.5-4.5 (one of the best standard zooms Pentax has
made) + 2 SFX battery grips, one for 2CR5 lithium battery and other for
4 AA batteries (everything is mint, except that one of the plastic tabs
of the soft case is missing, but it is perfectly functional)
Instruction manual (in Spanish) Everything for 180 euro.

Second lot:

Pentax MZ-5 AF SLR body + SMC Pentax-F 35-80 mm. 4-5.6 (a fine standard
zoom lens) + Fg battery pack (the body and battery pack are like new,
the lens is EX+ cosmetically; optically and mechanically it's perfect)
Instruction manual for the camera in Spanish, and in English for the
battery pack. Everything for 280 euro.

Shipping expenses will be paid by the buyer.

Hi,

I have some photos I took in 1986 (I think) of a recreation of the

Re: OT: English (Re: Health Warning)

2002-03-15 Thread Bob Walkden

Hi,

for those of you who are interested in English I can thoroughly
recommend 2 excellent books:

"The English Language. A Historical Introduction"
Charles Barber
Cambridge University Press, 1993
0-521-78570-7

It does exactly what it says on the cover.

"The English Language"
David Crystal
Penguin, 1988
0-14-013532-4

Crystal is Mr. Linguistics round here. We used several of his
textbooks when I was studying the subject at poly. This book looks at
varieties & uses of modern English as well as at the history of the
language. It's more of a layman's book than Barber's, but Barber's is
not at all difficult and includes an introduction to elementary
linguistics. He shows the development with examples from the IE family,
through Germanic languages, OE, Norse, ME, Early Modern up to date, and
concludes with chapters on English as a world language, and its
future. He gives a very good and interesting example of how English has
changed by tracing the story of the prodigal son from a pre-Conquest OE
bible through to the current New English bible.

Re[2]: Link to b&w shots taken in Romania

2002-03-15 Thread Bob Walkden

Hi,

there was also a very good b&w photo essay in National Geographic Nov.
1997 called "Hutsul Village" from the Ukrainian part of the
Carpathians, which is culturally much the same as the Romanian part, as
you might expect. When I was up there I was only 2km from the border
with the Ukraine and was told that a $5- tip to the border guard would
get me across, no questions asked. From the hills above the village I
could see the dirt track stretching out over the hills and valleys and
into the Ukraine. Very beautiful, and very remote.

The people in the valley where I was photographing spoke a very interesting
mix of Romanian, Ukrainian and local dialect words. I'm definitely going to
go back there sometime.
