Re: New K bodies listed on B

2006-07-10 Thread John Forbes
I'm glad you raised that point, Aaron.

First, Pentax DO send shipments by airfreight (according to you), so it
shows that the price of airfreight makes it an economic proposition at
times, although obviously one would expect seafreight to be cheaper.

Second, I DO happen to believe that Pentax should use airfreight more
often. In the past year, a great deal of criticism has been directed at
Pentax for not having product in the stores. How many times do you
suppose that Pentax lost a sale because a camera was on the high seas
when, for only $2.00 more, it could have been in the store?

But as for calling people stupid, I reserve that for people who
uncritically accept figures for shipping that are a thousand times
over-stated, whilst at the same time claiming to know something about
shipping methods and logistics. Ring any bells?

John

Depends what sort of goods you are talking about. If the product is
small, light, of high value, and out of stock, then there are very good
reasons for using airfreight.

This shot is from a Fado concert with a young and very talented Fadista
(fado singer) Joana Amendoeira.
Some of you may be familiar with fado music. The style is about 100 years
old, and it's from Lisboa. The lyrics are very poetic, and the music is
"silent music". It is about love and longing for the beloved. I don't
understand a word of the lyrics, but it appeals a lot to me.

That's a great picture, Tim.

I, too, love Fado, in the right setting (preferably a cafe/restaurant in
Lisbon). It is extremely intense and emotional. The Portugese take it
very seriously, and woe betide anybody who makes the slightest noise
during a Fado performance.

There's magic about pentax DSLR. Someone heard sumthin about *istDL

truly a work of art. It's fun to see all these other camera guys shutup
when they see crystal clear pictures taken at ISO 800 or 1600, a true
portrait of a birthday hero on his 75th anniversary.

My moms brother played harmonica all evening and I got wonderful set of

only one thing to regret, 30 degeees heat that falls beyond the scope of

Actually, this is clearly a store stock issue and not a Pentax issue --
they use the sea for the initial gigantic orders and not for subsequent
follow-up orders. Unless there has been an issue at the launch of a
camera with availability, which I haven't heard about, this is merely a
problem with getting stores to bring in the products, nothing more.

Thanks Aaron and David,

It is on my hit-list (though it's not available in the UK yet). I
don't have any specific questions, as the Adorama spec sheet covers my
basic one: it will work on the MZ-S.

And, no matter how important this is on film, I think it would be

The day I bought my Mamiya C220 TLR, I was sitting in a diner looking
it over while waiting for my lunch. A punk teenager struts up to the

Actually, her name is Patches (in the plural). She came to me as an
adult, pre-named. I was thinking of renaming her (Sewerpipe was the
leading contender) but I decided that a mid-life name-change would be
too confusing for the poor thing. I did, however, provide her with a
new nickname, Lump, a sobriquet by which she's still known. She's as
indifferent towards that name as all her others...

It may also be a distributor issue.
While my local boys don't keep much in stock that is out of the ordinary,
Pentax Canada has generally been able to supply my slightly esoteric needs
quite quickly.
My silver 31 was a few days, silver 77 within a week, the FA50/1.4 was a few
days, the 10-17 took 3 or 4 days, and the 14 only took a few days as well..
The FA200/4 Macro took a couple of weeks, and the A15/3.5 was a couple of
months, but I was warned in advance that these items were not going to be
quick.

It is important for landscapes. It's also extremely important for shooting
cars. Not necessarily because of the color of the light, but because of the
angle. The angle also makes it nice for portraiture. High sun isn't of much use
for anything, except perhaps shooting pressed road kill:-)

(Yes this is silly, but now so is the rest of this discussion).

I, like about 100 others I am sure, am just waiting for this thread to die.

But the image of Nikes being washed ashore into natives hands was a nice
diversion.

Re: PESO -- Pink Moon

2006-07-10 Thread Bruce Dayton
If it were me, I would certainly give it a try or two with the raw
converter. The photo is pretty good. I think the biggest annoyance
for me, is that it seems like you could have shifted the image very
slightly left, to get the island left edge - what would be sacrificed
on the right, I would almost crop out anyway. It would balance the
shot just a bit more.

That being said, there is a raw feeling of power about this shot. I
can almost feel the wind and weather. The boats and the flag, along
with the moon, really add to this photo. So all in all, I like this
photo, just wish it shifted a tiny bit to the left.

Why do i take pictures.

Well the horses make me money.

However...

I take my personal photos for probably this reason. I tend to find myself
living in the
past, or wanting to
live in the past, so to speak. I don't take well to changes, radical or not.
Stouffville
is getting a Wal-Mart. I
m having difficulty dealing with this.:-)

For that reason, having rampant development in the area i reside in, makes me
want to
capture the
existing, simpiler way of life, the farm and its people and machineas and
animals, before
they are all
gone.

As far as landscapes, we live on one of the best planets around. Why not record
its beauty
and
funcionality.

Just remember after all ther oil is gone, and we have blown our selves all to
bits, we'll
look like any
other planet out there. Whats the point of photographing that.:-)

Battery Use Variations *ist-D vs DS

2006-07-10 Thread P. J. Alling
Well I finally got tired of the fact that my *ist-D gets more battery
usage from a set of rechargeables than my Ds and did a little test.

It seems that the DS will take quite a few more photos when the battery
indicator reads empty, two or three hundred more in fact. The D is just
about ready to give out when the battery indicator reads empty. The D
will take batterys that the Ds thinks are empty, (and won't even get the
display on the DS to start), and show them as half full.

Now we all know that the battery check on these cameras is just a rough
estimation of how much power remains, but this looks like a huge
difference. Using my handy, dandy, Tandy®, digital multimeter I have
been able to determine that at a measured voltage around 1.24-1.27
volts the Ds starts showing the batteries as being empty, yet it will
continue to operate for quite some time. The D sees these as being half
full. I don't know if this is sample variation or some psychological
gambit, (for example, GM automobile gas gauges read empty when there's
still 3-4 gallons in the tank, just so people won't run out of gas), I
don't know about anyone else but I find this to be interesting.

Disclaimer: Hardly a scientific test, but I didn't have to build any
special equipment and I wasn't doing anything else important anyway.

Have I ever said how much I hate macro media flash? Well I hate it.
It's an abomination, all Flash programmers should be taken out and keel

lips in dung until they think they're going to die. Then exhumed so

vegetables kept handy for the amusement of the children, before they're

RE: PESO: Sun Shadow

2006-07-10 Thread Tom C
Hi Jack,

I definitely find the the manipulated image with the "shadow" more
appealing.

As for your conscience, I can't speak to that... :-)

It's interesting that you state lookers have not commented about the
unnatural look. I suspect it's because we/they have been bombarded by
unnatural images in the media for so long that we now often accept what we
see without questioning it's authenticity. Special effects have so
mesmerized us that we view them as common-place.

Re: PESO: Sun Shadow

2006-07-10 Thread Bruce Dayton
I gave a comparative response. I didn't like the first one very much
because I thought the manipulation looked very odd and fake. The
second looks much better.

You came across wanting a critique on the manipulation, rather than
the picture as a whole. You've already indicated that you are rather
so-so on this one.

As to the second shot, I can see a line coming across from the left
that looks like a film scratch. There are a bunch of dust spots that
should be cleaned up (boy I remember dealing with that from scans!).
The image for me is medium - not great, but not a stinker. If there
were more detail to be had in the background...
