My kinda shot, information, commentary, good geometry and
light :)
I think, though , I'd crop a bit off the bottom about maybe
1/6th of the
frame - because the bottom area is so dark and not as
sharp. I love the
placement of the guy in the frame. Nice bit of
photo-journalism but
painterly at the same time.

This is so stupid and so ironic.

Philly (where I live) is on its way to breaking its
record for the number of murders in a year, which was
set (IIRC) in 1993.

The police say the main problem is the large number of
intimidated people who won't cooperate with
investigations--"don't snitch" is the rule in the
streets.

So, to encourage cooperation, the police are abusing
law-abiding citizens.

Sheesh.

Yes, I have implemented profiles for each monitor but I use the same
target for overall display consistency. Because my system consists of
a CRT and TFT dispaly I have chosen a target which is optimised for
the the response of my CRT. Using this CRT target to calibrate my TFT
leads it to clip the blacks, however this is OK because I do all my
critical work on the CRT and reserve the TFT for tools etc.

The other way to go if you have dissimilar monitors is to choose a
target profile that matches the poorest performing monitor then all
the display area will be completely uniform in response.

> Does it have something similar to Adobe Gamma?

No it's more about the profile handling and management.

Hi Ken,
Yes, it has functional wheely bars. They restrict it to about a 6
inch lift on the front wheel and are adjusted to keep it all going
straight with the wheel up. Of course it can easily smoke the rear
tires with the front wheel up. I'm trying to talk him into letting me

I haven't tried profiling my Vista box as yet, its integrated colour

Re: PESO: Another slow-shutter pan

2006-07-30 Thread Paul Stenquist
Thanks Ralf,
That's what I get for working too fast. Didn't even see those.
They're probably dirt on the lens. Too defined to be sensor dirt.
I'll have to take a closer look and clone them out. This lens could
very well be in need of a cleaning. It's one of my workhorses.

PESO: Department of the truly insane

2006-07-30 Thread Paul Stenquist
The Woodward Dream Cruise -- Detroit's annual automotive extravaganza
-- is now just weeks away, and the metal is turning up on the avenue.
I've seen some unusual machines out there, but this one is probably the
most totally insane. It's a three-wheel motorcycle with an 8 liter
supercharged Chevrolet engine. The engine is aluminum and the
supercharger is OVERDRIVEN. It was dynoed and develops 777 horsepower
AT THE REAR WHEELS! Now I've heard a lot of supercharged engines
running through straight pipes in my time, and many of them were
popping and banging messes. But this one is right there. Every cylinder
fires with a mini explosion. Every mini explosion hurts your ears. This
trike weighs about 1200 pounds soaking wet. Its power to weight ratio
is far better than a formula one car. Anyone want to go for a ride? I
saw a young lady on the back seat. Perhaps she should be subjected to
a testosterone test. This is not a great shot. It was taken late at
night at ISO 1600, f1.7 @ 1/30th with the FA 50/1.4. The owner won't
allow the bike to be photographed, because he would be disqualifed from
a competition for specialty vehicles called the Ridley, if it appears
in a magazine. So I can't sell the pic. (He probably would be miffed to
learn I got this much of a shot.) But it's here:

We've known for a while that the K100D has both the smaller buffer and
the mirror prism of the DL/DL2. It is not a replacement for the DS2,
it is the bottom end camera. It does, however, come in anti-shake / no
anti-shake configurations, but that's the only difference between the
100 and 110. It's cheaper than the DS2 was, isn't it? In Canada, it

The buffer is SMALLER??? That doesn't seem possible. This camera
should be basically the "S version" of the new Pentax. A smaller
buffer doesn't bode well for the 10. We need a much bigger buffer
than that of the S in the 10. Just as big won't cut it.

Cloud photos _may_ get published!

2006-07-30 Thread Don Sanderson
Recieved from the Cloud Appreciation Society:

Dear Don,
I am the photo editor of The Cloud Appreciation Society, and
I wanted to be
in touch about the attached images.

We have begun an agreement of recommending some of our favourite images for
possible publication in The International Journal of Meteorology and I
wondered if you would like your photographs to possibly appear in a future
issue of the magazine.

For over 30 years, The International Journal of Meteorology has been a
respected, popular and international periodical for disseminating research
and information on weather and climate. It is run on a voluntary basis,
specialising in weather extremes and atmospheric phenomena. The
publication's website is show here:
http://www.journalofmeteorology.com/

If you agree to your images appearing, they would be credited to you and you
would of course retain full copyright. Needless to say, there would be no
attempt by the magazine for monetary gain from the use of your images.

If you are happy for them to be published, would you forward high
resolution
versions of the images separately if possible to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You
should include in the email that you give your consent for them to be
printed on the condition of
you being credited as the photographer.
If possible could you include brief details of any relevant weather
conditions on the day of the event.

Many thanks and Kind Regards,
Ian Loxley.

I was actually surprised. I did the "hold one camera up to each eye"
trick today and this is what I saw:

Left Eye: K100D w/Kit Lens
Right Eye: ist-DS w/Kit Lens and "katz-eye" viewfinder.

The left eye had a slightly smaller image - but it was BRIGHTER than
in my right eye. The image was also just a bit "cooler" - my DS w/
Katz-Eye had an almost brownish tinge to it in comparision.

Other differences - the 2.5" screen is nice, but the backlight is a
bit slow to respond. Seems like it takes a fraction of a second to
"ramp up" to full brightness when you're in review mode.

Speaking of preview... if you're in ZOOM mode at any stage, and you
hit the INFO button, it behaves differently. On the DS, the INFO
button toggles between "full info" mode, the mode with the histogram,
and the "fairly empty" screen where you can zoom. With the K100D, if
you are zoomed in at all and you hit the INFO button, all it does is
remove the arrows from the edges of the image. So it's not a quick
toggle OUT of zoom mode (which is pretty much what I use the info
button for when I'm zoomed in to 12x to check focus, for example).

The shutter is quieter. More like a "shclick" and less of a ker-
CLACK sound like the DS. (It actually sounds more like the Canon 300D)

Buffer is definitely smaller - rapid fire sequences slow down much
quicker than with the DS.

Focus seemed peppier. I had my own NiMH batteries in there to be
sure of that. It wasn't "night and day" quicker, but it seemed a bit
faster to get to the mark and a little more decisive.

The focus screen, for those Katz-Eye enthusiasts, does not appear to
be quite as easy to remove, but it looks "doable".

The SR appeared to do what it was supposed to do. I was surprised at
the sharpness of the 1/8 and 1/4 second exposures, even at 75mm zoom.

Electronic preview: Why? If you're going to take the picture to see
what it looks like, then just TAKE THE PICTURE and see what it looks
like! Silly feature. I was glad to see that this feature can be
turned off so the DOF preview button does what it ought to.

I had my own SD card in there so that I could take my images home and
look at them more closely. Should be/Could be interesting.

For those of you in Minnesota - this was at National Camera in Golden
Valley. While they show "body only" in their catalog at $620, they
only have the kits right now. I'm going to wait and see the "K10D"
or whatever it will be called before I make any sort of jump. At
this point, it is (as someone else mentioned) more of a "side-grade"
than UPgrade to go from the DS to the K100D. But it is still tempting.

AA lithium battery life

2006-07-30 Thread Paul Stenquist
I find that myAA lithiums last long enough in the *istD that I can't
remember how old they are. So last time I changed them, I recorded
the frame count for each camera. That was in February. Today, one
camera indicated that the batteries were almost gone. They lasted
2100 frames. That's with the battery grip. I'm very pleased with that
much battery life. I believe I'm paying just over a buck each for the
batteries now when I buy them in quantities of 16 or more from
Battery Central. I'm not sure about that price, but I'll be buying
another 16 this week, so if anyone cares, I'll let you know.

PESO - Feathered Biker

2006-07-30 Thread Eactivist
Really just a fun shot, nothing else.

I am taking another photography class through a local camera store. Kind of
dumbed down, but not totally without value. I have reasons other than
photography to be taking it.

Included in the class was a little group photo shoot. Last Saturday we took
the ferry from Oakland to San Francisco and wandered around the SF farmers'
market.

In my separated wanderings I came across this guy.

http://members.aol.com/eactivist/PAWS/pages/feathered.htm

I asked him if I could take a picture of his hat. I would have liked to take
more time and compose it well, but he was really only ready for one quick shot.

There is a bicycle helmet under there. He started by attaching feathered
lures from his fishing equipment. Then friends began giving him feathers, and
it
grew...

* SuperA in good shape (without the grip). Black paint falling in the

I have a teeny-tiny 5MP Panasonic/Leica that we got a little under two years
ago due to the impending arrival of Number One Son. It's a DMC
something-or-other 1, don't think it's the same model you won.

The good: a great LCD, better than the DS2 and much better than the D or DS;
stabilization works well; 2.8 lens at the wide end; makes remarkably good
videos; really small.

The bad: tops out at a really noisy ISO 400; pretty severe barrel distortion at
the wide end.

For a point and shoot it delivers a good image, and it gets a good amount of
family snapshot use. We're happy with it.

OT: SpyderPro2 & Win XP x64

2006-07-30 Thread David Savage
G'day All,

A couple of months ago I got a new PC with Win XP Pro x64 installed.
When I made this decision I considered all the hardware I have & if 64
bit drivers were available.

Of course I forget one item, my Spyder2!!

I went to the ColorVision site to try & find the driver updates.
They're not yet available. 2nd quarter 2006. Bugger!

Well the second quarter passes & still no drivers, so I fire off an
email to their support people & the next day receive a link to the
download new drivers.

My new system is now correctly profiled.

The software is still a bit buggy, but it eventually spat out a
profile. Wooo Hooo!

Just thought I'd post here unless others have been having similar frustrations.

Cheers,

Dave
