Re: Cosina 19-35 vs FAJ 18-35

2006-08-02 Thread P. J. Alling
Not really, I still have some film gear, which I intend to use again
someday, I decided to stick with manual focus, (I've got a pair of LX
bodies), so I've not paid much attention to the FAJ lenses, since I
can't use them.

Thibouille wrote:

Any feedback concerning quality of those?

AFAIR the FAJ is still sold new at about 400 euros.

2006/7/28, P. J. Alling [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I've heard nothing good about the Cosina, except for it's price, which
was much less than 200 euros.

Thibouille wrote:

Any feedback concerning those two?
I know more or less what people think about the FAJ18-35 but I'm more
interestd to know which to buy between those two.
The Cosina has aperture ring AFAIK so I could use the zoom on my
MX/KX. The FAJ will only go on my D (Z1, SFXn and SuperA will be
sold).

Interestingly I can get both for about the same price which is more or
less 200 euros.

FS: Flashes (Pentax and others)

2006-08-02 Thread Thibouille
* Starblitz 3601DTZ: analog TTL flash. Has the particularity to be
multi-dedicated so it works (didn't test) with multiple brands. Keep
in mind It is Analog TTL so oldish TTL systems. It works nicelky on
Pentax with usual limitations of compatible flashes: program doesn't
work which means you have to work with manual/Aperture priority. But
it works on my SuperA, Z1 etc. It should work on D/DS/DS2... (dunno
the trigger voltage). I dunno if that brand takes TTL or not. The
brand it is supposed to work with are (wth TTL or not, dunno): Nikon,
Canon, Olympus, Chinon, Ricoh, Pentax, Minolta and Yashica/Contax.
It also has a zoom head from 35mm-85mm and an 28mm reflector as well
as colour filters.
Takes 4AA batteries. Contacts are clean. It can swivel/bounce. 25 euros.

* Pentax AF240FT: Digital TTL only IMO(not PTTL and no LX/SuperA TTL).
Has pouch, fixed head. Red AF illumnator. Has also a 5P sync plug
(with cap). Will work with e.g. D/DS/DS2. 25 euros.

* Metz 40MZ2 (model with two flash reflectors) with both SCA3701
(digital TTL anf AF bodies dedicated) and SCA372 (analog TTL and MF
bodies dedicated) adapters. Excellent flash I'm sorry I have to sell
it. In good condition. With pouch. 80 euros.

I'm in Europe and will have to add shipping of course. Can accept
paypal but will up the price a bit (mighty tax).

PUG is dying?

2006-08-02 Thread John Forbes
I think I need to eat my words on this subject.

The August PUG is the best for a long time. I especially liked Bruce D's
Oakland Temple, Greg Cooper's Church Top, Dag T's @ (my favourite), and
Anne S's wonderfully whimsical (and cleverly named) Under construction,
just to name a few.

The high (and high quality) turnout does suggest that a simple theme can
be more inspirational than a quirky one designed to challenge the
photographer. This was a straightforward subject, but it didn't produce
banal images. Or perhaps it is just that the subject is a popular one.

just a ranch or two left now. I took three different shots of the
same basic scene. I would be very interested in your thoughts about
these three - is one clearly better - is one clearly worse, etc.

At first I liked #1 best, and then #3. however, in #1, the barn is
too far left (centered), IMHO it should be about 1/3 from the right.
#2 just looks funny to me, again, I think, due to the barn position,
and also there is not bale in the bottom right corner, it's empty
feeling. #3 leads my eye and gives a better sense of place.

I like #3 best. More in keeping with the title.

Just show up at the visitor center and hire a local with a jeep. That
appears to be the way it's done; they'll take you out as long as you
want and it seemed like a good deal to me. I went last year (again)

Tom,
If you want to go in prior to the formal opening time, be prepared to
PAY dearly for a guide. You will have no choice. Guide or nothing. If I
remember, it cost us (3) $40 ea. Sunrise is prior to daily opening
time.
We had been in the previous pm and knew exactly where we wanted to be,
but we were not given a choice.
I had a 4-WD, but many didn't and at that time,('prox 3 yes ago) the
road/trail didn't require it.
There is a day use picnic area I saw, but don't believe there is a
camping place there. I'm putting up a shot taken from the picnic area.
(Used orange filter)
Recommend close by Goulding's Lodge, 2 mi. off US 163 and Goulding's
Jct. All services and a bit of history.
The lodge is perched on a side bluff which affords a nice area view. It
overlooks a small airport where, at least at one time, provided light
fixed wing aircraft flights over the Valley.
I have no financial interest in Goulding's, but am furnishing their
'phone no. in case: (435) 727-3231.

In something I read recently, no, you can drive the main part in a regular
car. It's a 17 mile circuit, but a passenger car can do it.

But to really see it, go off the beaten path for the best shots, yes, you
also need to go on one of the private tours. Tourists are not allowed to wander
off the main road without a guide.

That is based on a book for photographers, Photographing the Southwest,
Volume 2, by Laurent Martres.

The northern (southern ?) span of the Bay Bridge is also a suspension bridge,

Tom,
New AAA Tour Guide indicates that there is camping available in the
area.
We stayed at Goulding's Lodge where one of our party found a scorpion
hanging on the back of one of his window drapes.
We through off our bedding and did a search. Found nothing, but suspect
I took a little longer to go to sleep than I, otherwise, might have.
Don't know about the camping thing. Travel trailer/RV, maybe. :)
Been there twice. Very loosely run by a Navajo staff. BTW, taking their
picture is not recommended without asking. If asked, may cost you a
little. Others are superstitious; Steals their spirit...or...
Last time there was in early Nov.. Bitter, icy, stiff East wind caused
us to seek any shelter available. Stopped at Zion Canyon on way and
waited til Nov. to be allowed to drive the Canyon.

50mm, from aways away, and quite a crop. I don;t recall, as I don't
have the EFIX in front of me, but I think it was f8. After I got
home, I decided that I liked it tighter, not that I had much choice, I
only have one lens. :) And, at least you say it's sharp, I have
been told with other pics that the subject was not quite in focus, or
something like that.

 It's not a bad composition.

thanks!!

It wouldn't have been the best in the PUG but it wouldn't have been the
 worst.

thanks again!!

The title of the pic (e.g. http://pug.komkon.org/06aug/imgp0588.html)

and the stems make sense of the title.

For me - no. My eyes zoom in to the buds.

Not sure I understand what you mean by, ..you must have seen this
 image as you posted it.

What I meant was you obviously included the stems because that was the image
you had in mind @ the time of capture - yes/no?

Any number of crops were considered and have been used with like
images. This was just another choice.

You chose what you chose and obviously liked it.

The peek-a-boo pads at the bottom left kind of finished off the
 bottom for me.

They look like a mistake to me. Either include all of them or totally omit.

FWIW I've sat thru professional critiques of 100's of outdoor images, some
mine, and what I've pointed out in your image are the kind of things I've
seen critiqued by several pros.

We don't have to agree. You asked for comments I gave you mine. ;-)

I feel the same. Your observation make perfect sense and would produce
fine compositions. I'm not taking issue with your ideas except as they
apply to this image.
