Re: OT: AFL Grand Final

2006-09-29 Thread David Savage
At 3 quarter time the score reads:

Goals Behinds Total
Swan811 59
Eagles 10 10 70

(FYI 1 goal = 6 points, 1 behind = 1 point)

Sydney were very impressive in that quarter. They looked like a
completly different team to how they played in the first half.

Exciting isn't it? ;-)

Cheers,

Dave

Yes, AFL (Australian Football League) is Aussie rules football.

It's hard to describe as it's a very different game. The closest type
of football that it resembles is Irish Gaelic football, but with an
oval ball and tackling.

I gotta' go, the third quarter just started.

I was going to offer the same software Paul mentioned. I used to use it at
work for doing image recovieries for customers before we got some more
advanced software (which works with hard drives and other media besides
flash memory). It's good stuff, and it certainly wouldn't hurt to try it.

Just be glad none of us Pentax users have to use Smart Media or XD memory
cards. In my experience with those formats, if you've got a problem with a
bad card or inacessible files, you may as well chuck the card and buy a new
one. I don't understand why, but when SM and XD cards fail, they fail
completely and utterly. At least files on CF and SD cards can usually be
recovered, even if the card isn't usable afterwards.

Isn't it a great lens? I got incredibly lucky when I got mine. Some NorCal
list members may remember me using mine at our last gathering, when we were
out shooting the Blue Angels from San Francisco.

My favorite part of the 500mm 4.5 is the sights on the top, which (as long
as you have them aligned properly) allow you to shoot without having to look
through the viewfinder. This is how I was able to catch the Blue Angels
crossing directly in line with my lens, which I don't think the other guys
were able to do. Seeing a full view makes long telephoto shooting of action
scenes a HELL of a lot easier, since you can see what'll be in the frame
before it gets there.

(note: that's a kinda big crop, since they weren't that close to us when
doing this maneuver.)

I can't be much help, as my 6x7 300mm is sitting in my closet too. I found a
good deal on a used 6x7->K mount adaptor, and also have a few K-mount
Pentaxes. But I have not yet used the adaptor... though if I ever have a yen
to use a 300mm lens (on either format), well, there they are. Unused
versatility. I use my 6x7 gear quite a lot, but mostly with normal to wide
lenses.

The K adaptor does not retain diaphragm automation, while I believe the
6x7->645 does. That adaptor could be useful in the event of a P645D.

In the September issue of the Light impression catalog, the album is shown

number 7817, shown on page 86 - extra large corners.

One situation perhaps similar to yours occurred again with B&H on an order
for a KA-mount Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2. That one was a special order,
and took about 6 weeks to from order to invoice date, then another 5 days to

I can't help with Mac software.

If you have access to a PC I recommend PC Inspector Smart Recovery:

It doesn't recognise .pef files, but if you search for .tif files it
will work. Then change the recovered files extension from .tif to
.pef.

I just went down to the basement and checked out my film supply in
the deep freeze. (I had to chip away some ice to get to the film
bags.) I have a lot of Portra VC 160 in both 35mm and 120. I have
quite a bit of Delta 3200 120, which is great for handheld 6x7
indoors. I have several rolls of Plus X 120, quite a bit of Fuji NPS
120, some Tri-X 35m,m some Delta 100 120 and even some Velvia 120.
Gotta shoot some of this. I pulled two rolls of the Portra 160 120
and two of the Plus-X 120. But i think I'll go back down and get some
35mm film for my Leica IIIf RD. This could be a film weekend, while I
wat for the K10D.

Re: you tube video

2006-09-29 Thread P. J. Alling
You don't have to program in the focal length of every lens to get shake
reduction, only the A and K mount class lenses. If you have F lenses or
later you have no problems. If I remember correctly the display for
entering the lens length shows a range. Maybe it'll be acceptable
within that range if you take normal care in holding the camera steady.

2006-09-29 Thread Paul Stenquist
I think I'm going to shoot some 6x7 BW this weekend. I haven't shot
any film in two years. I have an itch. I think shooting Grace in the
backyard or people on the street with the 165/4 leaf shutter and
some high speed synch fill flash could be fun. I still have some

That's kind of what I've thought, so I haven't bothered. But I don't
have a 300, and this one is relatively fast. It would be fun to see
how sharp it is on that little sensor. But probably disapointing

The adapters have been around for a long time. The crop factor is by my

I'm wondering if the 300/4 is similar to my SMC Tak 400/5.6, where the
6x7 version of the lens was exactly the same optically, but had a
different lens mount and tripod mount assembly. IIRC, you can remove
the lens element/aperture assembly from the back half of the mount,
and put the mount from a 6x7 lens onto it.

If you can get a 67 adapter for less than the cost of a K-mount or
screw mount 300/4, you're ahead of the game. Granted there are
probably better 300mm lenses out there, but they're also more
expensive.

The "A" lenses can't tell the camera the focal length, even for
a fixed focal length lens. You need a lens with the digital
signal pin - F or later.

AFAIK, that's not completely correct. You program in the focal length of
older, lenses, but the newer lenses (F and later - maybe even A) tell the
camera what the focal length is. My _guess_ is that if you're using an
older zoom, you'd want to advise the camera of the focal length just as you
would with an older prime lens.

MItch -
well my young friend, Renzo, did not show up today.
Last time I talked to him he was waiting for UPS to deliver
his laptop
(shipped from overseas)

HE is eager and bright and helpful when he is here, but
isn't so good at
letting someone know that he can't show up.

HE got a windoze 98Sse cd , he told me, when we spoke this
afternoon -- I just asked him
to give me a buzz when he was on his way to my apt.

I can't yell at him too easily because he is the
roomy/fiance of my best friends daughter...
and doing all this stuff for me totally free.

As I a result I got some more sleep today, but little annoys
me quite as much as
people who say they are going to do something and can't at
least say they can't get to it.

I wouldn't mind quite so much if HE hadn't been the one to
say he really wanted to do it
today. sigh.
I could have gone and gotten the disk from him, too
though I preferred to have someone
here for the possible struggle.

Another resource is out of town...
Yet another is a guy I worked with many years ago when I was
his techno idol of sorts in
the market research software stuff. it is all flipped now.

I wish I could buy memory for my brain on the web!

Re: dudes, I'm getting a DELL

2006-09-29 Thread P. J. Alling
I think you're missing something. OEM's stopped supplying install disks
with W2K. Now everything comes installed on the harddrive. You can
create an install backup set from your computer just in case the HD
crashes but most of the time there's a method, differing between each
manufacturer I'm sure, to restore from a hidden partition on the current
hard drive. Unfortunately you get your original factory installation
back, including all of the free bloatwear.

Update --
I called 'em back and asked for the 1 gig of ram - it was
another $50

it comes with a 90 day "trial " of Pc-illin - which
hopefully will protect me until I
download something free :)

There is going to be stuff on it I don't want but hopefully
I can uninstall or just ignore.

Since there will be lots of room, I think I'll just scoot
the icons off my desktop and pretend they
arent there.

Mark - what was the site I downloaded Mozilla firefox from?
or was it Rob that sent me there?

Just incase that is a bettwer way to download it than
transfering from the old machine

Just a bit over the top. I have four Dell systems here (along with a
few older IBM PC's that are mostly mothballed at this time). Two have
Symantec (Norton SW) ; two Have McAffee. All have long term support
contracts. I haven't "wiped the disks" and haven't encountered any
situations that would suggest a cost/effective benefit in doing so. I
gave up playing with PC's about ten years ago, I just want a platform to
run applications on. My experience suggest changing the software
configuration too much could result in grief from the support chain, but
that is just my experience. I haven't had any trouble adding software
--- takes some time now and then, but it gets done.

Each installation/user combo has limits and objectives that need to be
factored into setting up and configuring the system software and support
facilities. My experience suggests some of the generalizations
surfacing here are just a bit counterproductive. IMHO...

Re: dudes, I'm getting a DELL

2006-09-29 Thread Mitch Conant
Ann:

Good choice on the DELL. I've used Dell for several business clients,
they all seem to be happy with them.

I too, use AVG and LOVE it. I put it on client PCs, use it on all 3 of
my workstations (Win 98SE, NT 4.0 and Win2000) as well as my Win2000
server and my Linux server. I have never had anything get through
(feverishly looking for wood to knock on). I think that as part of the
installation process on the Dell, you have the option of installing
Norton Anti-Virus. I wouldn't do it, I would get AVG from the link below.

Someone else in this thread mentioned a firewall. I have always used the
Linksys Firewall/Switch. The firewall is a BIG part of your security,
the Switch would allow you to connect the 2 computers (if you have an
ethernet port in the old computer - $10.00-$15.00) and share Internet,
Printers, Scanner, etc. Some people swear by the software firewall,
Iswear by the hardware. I do so because a software firewall is
suceptible to the same issues as other software (crashes, being unloaded
behind the scenes, not being loaded at startup, being hacked
(IMO)...etc...). See the link below.

Let me know if you need the Win98SE disk...

Have fun,
Mitch

Crop factor compared to what?
A 300mm 6x7 lens will look the same (through the K10D viewfinder
and to the sensor) as a 300mm K-mount lens.

A 35mm frame is 1.5x the size of the "APS-C" sensor in the K10D.
A frame of 6x7 film is (approximately) 2x the size of a 35mm frame,
which would make it about a 3x crop factor going from 6x7 to a K10D.

I believe, I found the link to the youtube K10D video thru a posting

Anyway, during the video, Carlson pulls out a 6x7 lens, puts in on

it 4x)?
Are the adapters a new release or have they been around for some time?

Waiting for orders from Pentax...

2006-09-29 Thread Mike Hamilton
I ordered a black 77 limited from McBain Camera on Sept 1. They
placed the order to Pentax Canada the next day. It's now September 29
and I have no lens. I've talked to McBain Camera, and they have not
really found out any information as to when the lens will arrive.
They say it normally takes 2-3 weeks for special orders to arrive.

Is it unreasonable to wait a month for a lens? Thinking of other
retailers that I've ordered from - B&H had my 20-35f/4 to me within 3
weeks (and that's across the border), and KEH had my 43 limited it to
me within a week and a half.

Is this normal for Pentax? Pentax Canada? Anyone?

Mike

p.s.: I really want my 77 limited. I think the guy at McBain is
tiring of me... :)

Hehe -
Well as it happens I do this all the time - in elements I
click on adjust color
and a thumbnails pop up to show previews of adjustments with
a sliding scale thingy
for amount.

It is one of the annoyances of tecno-babble that something
as simple as adjusting the
hues and tones needs a non-painterly word such as "curves"

I look at the images and fiddle with brightness, saturation,
hue, color, etc and slide
the levers around until I see what I want sometimes
applying into an area I've lassoed
or hit with my "magic wand", sometimes to the entire image.

I don't mean I do it to every image when "all the time" but
I use all these tools -
The name "curves" just doesn't mean anything to me. Or
channels.

The word 'CURVE' doesn't appear anywhere on my screen when
I'm working in elements.

thanks for that direct explanation, Jack :)

So after whining yesterday, I was wandering through Home Depot today and

The previous two computers I owned were built that way; find a
good motherboard, fit your own choice of CPU, memory, etc., and
add peripherals to taste. My last purchase was a built-to-order
HP system; with their promotional pricing it was cheaper than
doing it myself, and had everything I wanted.
Nowadays I'd either go the same route or buy a secondhand box;
a friend of mine can find truly excellent deals (such as his
latest accquisition; 14 1U IBM eServers, each with 1GB of RAM,
built-in SCSI, and with processors ranging from 1GHz P3s to
dual Xeons, at an average price of $100 per system).

Too small for contacts (now I happen to like 5x7 prints myself, but I am
talking about he great unwashed masses here), to big for most enlargers.
There are a few dedicated folks who swear by 5x7 around however. I have
always wanted a 5x7 Speed Graphic, but that is more because of the nifty
leaning photos you can shoot with it than the size of the negative.

Re: OT: CPU question

For Photo usage, I'd say buy RAM first.

Then, if you still have some money to spend on it, buy more RAM again.

Finally, think about getting a new CPU.

I've a 1.5 GB machine with an AMD Athlon XP 64, and yes, PS goes faster
than on most P4s I've seen with 1 GB or less.

Re: K10D vs D80

2006-09-29 Thread Patrice LACOUTURE (GMail)
Hi,

There are a couple 3rd party options comparable in functionality to
Nikon's 18-135, although probably not in par in terms of quality, and
definitely not supersonic driven:

Sigma 18-125 F3.5-5.6 DC
Sigma 18-200 F3.5-6.3 DC
Tamron 18-200 F3.5-6.3 XR Di II

I know nothing about the image quality of the Tamron.

I own the Tokina 18-125 and I'm quite happy with it. Very convenient,
and gives surprisingly good results given the price. Again, it is
probably not as sharp as the Nikon, but the prices can't be compared
neither.

I can provide sample shots (with *ist DS) if needed.

C'mon Pentax, please crank out some all-purpose wide-range hyperzoom
18-100+ with that supersonic drive thing!

Couldn't resist having operated on both sides (currenlty on the IC
bench): Maybe they just saw the deficiencies in what your company had to
offer. Fact is, Congress sets the advantage on many for the "employed"
and the employer. Although the IC may preceive ssignificant advantages,
the IC must be very careful to manage to advantage if that person is
to end up even or better at the end of the day. My experience is that
a large number do not and are, in real terms, sometimes significantly
disadvantaged as the sun sets. Just my experience.

Personally, I fine no overall usability difference between the two,
and I use both frequently. And I though I do computer tutoring for
both platforms, I get equal calls for help across both platforms. Just
got a phone call an hour ago from a Mac user who's had something stop
