Theme PESO: Your Creepiest Photo
Subject says it all. This is what I was asking about earlier. Since Halloween is on wednesday, I thought it'd be fun for people to post the creepiest photo they have on hand. If you think you can take a creepier one, go for it, but you don't have much time! Your photo doesn't have to have anything to do with Halloween, just the general idea of "creepy." http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/creepy Have fun! John Celio P.S.: to start things off, here's my PESO from a couple weeks ago, Mr. Owl's Leftovers: http://www.neovenator.com/2007/10/mr_11.html Comments not necessary, as it's already been commented upon recently. Larger buffer better view finder, same sensor. The Jpeg processing is more pleasing to those who're moving up from a P&S, but I doubt that you'd shoot Jpeg and who except a beginner would shoot Jpeg without setting up the camera to their liking. Re: Pentax Inventory Writedown
Tom, Take a Financal Accounting course before you do any more pontificating on Pentax's announcements. Any inventory evaluation write down was known long before Hoya took over the company. It's a non-cash, book entry with no impact on the future operations of the company. Same impact on first half profit, a non-cash impact. The profits were already lost a while ago. The company knew this and chose to report these results at this time. Regards, Bob S. Re: OT - Dual DVI Video Cards
Tom, Native Resolution is a monitor thing, no card has one. Any card on the market today will support 1680x1050, this is the standard resolution for 20" widescreen LCD's. You may have to set teh driver to the native resolution of the monitor initially. -Adam Tom C wrote: > Thanks Bill and Adam. I felt the same ... I never use JPEG capture and use a tripod too much of the time to really mourn the lack of image stabilization, rather than having a better viewfinder and a larger capture buffer. Re: OT - Dual DVI Video Cards
Thanks Bill and Adam. I'll ask another question it would otherwise take me a while to get the answer to. Native resolution. The monitors I'm looking at getting are widescreen 1680 x 1050. I see some cards list resolutions both above and below that, but not exactly that. Should I assume that the specific resolution is not supported by the card? I likewise see specs that say just because you don't see your monitor resolution listed, does not mean it will not work. Should I be worried or will the native resolution be detected and the firmware adapt itself to the aspect ratio of the monitor (make sense?). Re: Pentax Inventory Writedown
I respectfully ask you to explain then how "Pentax Corp., said first-half profit fell 45 percent, missing its own estimate, after writing down the value of its inventory." is good news, and how "Net income declined to 600 million yen ($5.3 million) in the six months ended Sept. 30, lagging behind its July forecast of 1.4 billion yen." is good news, and how "We have depreciated our inventory, including endoscopes, as we had difficulty competing with our rivals,'' mainly in North America"... is good news. I'm not making the news up and I'm not telling you how to intepret it. You also read that sales are up by 15%. If you write down inventory, you aren't talking about 'Selling a lot more things that aren't worth as much.', you're talking about excess stock. It sounds like Pentax wrote down a fair bit of older stuff they were sitting on (like the aforementioned cheap film kit) which impacted their net income. He won't have to find out by himself. We know you'll be on top of any bad news, Tom. Good news, no. But if it's bad news for Pentax, you're all over it. Your record is consistent. This time you thought it was bad news, although it really wasn't. But you are quite good at finding the dark cloud in the silver lining. OT - Dual DVI Video Cards
It's likely I'll be able to purchase a new desktop soon. I'll be running dual monitors. Since I can't afford anything I want. I'll be buying a pre-built off the shelf system. The video card that's in it uses the PCI-express bus. I'm looking to replace it with a card supporting dual DVI output. I notice that some say nVidia based cards are superior and opinions vary for numerous reasons. I also see there are numerous manufacturers that use a common chip set. Any suggestions? Hoping to stay under $250. Not big on buying a card from an obscure mfr. even if it has a well regarded chip set. Don't care about gaming at all, just solid all around performance. Thanks. Re: Pentax Inventory Writedown
Pentax wants to sell everything in their inventory before it devalues. So does every company. If Pentax is giving rebates you can bet they want to unload the cameras quickly. It's the product cycle, not necessarily Pentax. The lifetime of a digital camera in today's market, from release to the time it is surpassed, is Dust in the Wind. Tom C. >From: "P. J. You don't include equipment that's sold a short time after it's produced in an inventory writedown, I believe. If you have a large supply of parts whose price have dropped that may be included, I suppose, but the final selling price of the product has little to do with this. Generally, a "loss" caused by a writedown is a sort of manipulation of numbers. It represents value that's gone, of course, but when exactly it's included in the results is somewhat arbitrary. Also, remember that the sub $700 price is included in the 15 percent increase in sales, so as to speak. > What is says to me is that while sales are up (good) and profit is up > (good), due to the writedown, net income is down (bad). > If net income is down only due to a writedown, that's probably close to "good", too. - T -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Good Words for PhotoRescue PC
A friend asked if I could send him some photos I'd taken for his son to use in a school project, including some of his son and him. When I went looking for them I discovered that I had formatted my 4GB microdrive and started shooting again, without downloading the images. I knew recovery software existed but had never had the need to use. It's likely PhotoRescue is a barebones application as it's the first I chose to eplore after googling. I downloaded the trial version and it was able to rebuild all images on the drive. I hadn't yet reached the point of overwriting the images I cared about. I then spent the $29.95 to get the full version that ostensibly actually allows me to recover the images. Well apparently they were recovered $29.95 or not because when browsing them in Bridge, I was able to find them. :-0 In any case the software worked the very first time, was mindless to use, and saved me from myself. Otherwise the numbers look good, especially the operating profit increase. -Adam -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PESO - Artist on the Steps
I agree. The doors tell us that these are the front steps of a building. Without them, that information is lost. They could be the last few of a hundred steps at a park or a monument. But the knowledge that the artist is sitting on the front steps of a building helps establish a mood. BUT CLONE THE WHITE THING OUT! :-). (Not a bit deal, really. I just felt like shouting.:-)) Paul -- Original message -- From: Jack Davis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > For me, the area above the stairs completes the scene and anchors the > artist's location. > Nothing more than a very minor nit, but I wouldn't miss that white > thing on the upper right. > > Jack > --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > > > > http://tinyurl.com/32zo7j > > > > > > > > http://bp0.blogger.com/_EaTEtfR4WJw/RyXlBAS56DI/A48/ > > > > nTSAGXW91SI/s1600-h/oct_29+001.jpg > > > > > > Very nice, Frank. Pentax Inventory Writedown
Paraphrased from a 10/29 Bloomberg article: Pentax Corp., said first-half profit fell 45 percent, missing its own estimate, after writing down the value of its inventory. Net income declined to 600 million yen ($5.3 million) in the six months ended Sept. 30, lagging behind its July forecast of 1.4 billion yen. Sales at the company, which also makes medical equipment rose 15 percent. "We have depreciated our inventory, including endoscopes, as we had difficulty competing with our rivals,'' mainly in North America, Jiro Okamura, a spokesman at the Tokyo-based company, said by telephone. The writedown led to a one-time loss of about 900 million yen, he said. The company's sales rose to 85.6 billion yen from 74.7 billion yen. Operating profit, or sales minus the cost of goods sold and administrative expenses, more than doubled to 3.3 billion yen from 1.56 billion yen. -- Maybe those bargain basement camera prices in N.A. aren't that great after all. Interesting scene. Excellent tonality. The car is a bit unfortunate, but by no means a deal breaker. Good one. The only reason they could want me to register is so that they can send me spam. I don't want them to send me spam, so the New York Times has lost one potential reader who would have been very interested to look at their artice, and would also have seen their advertising. Ok to post PESO theme idea?
I have an idea for a fun PESO theme (for anyone who is interested), but I'm unsure if such a thing is allowed. It does not conflict with current PUG themes, as far as I can tell. The point for anyone who wants to participate would be to post an image they've already taken that fits the theme. It's the same concept as a PUG theme, but on the list instead of the PUG site. So, is that okay, or not allowed outside of the PUG? John Celio P.S.: The theme I had in mind is related to halloween, so I was hoping to start the thread tonight if possible. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I thought about it when first looking at it that it could be cropped tighter, but the space above does anchor it. I also think losing the white trash can would improve it too, though. Actually, the car could be cloned out. Constructing the back of the shoe would take a bit of work, but the rest of it is a cakewalk.
