Re: K20D AF calibration data
Ken Waller wrote: Curious if you were able to tell visually if you had a focus issue before the correction? I've been well aware of the front focus problems with my FA* 85/1.4 (showing up since the MZ-S times, through *istD K10D) and now I've finally been able to fix it. The same happens with the 31 Ltd and a Sigma 70-200/2.8 (front focusing only at its lower end). Those problems were already obvious with the K10D and remain the same with the K20D, before I did AF data correction. For some reason, with my previous cameras I didn't spot the problem with the two 50mm lenses. If so can you now see an improvement. Definitely yes. Two more comments of AF calibration. 1 - Several years ago, I also tested two more samples of the FA* 85/1.4 and got the same front-focusing problem with the MZ-S, with minimal sample variation. On the other hand, three different samples of the F 70-210 lens had no problem with my MZ-S, showed heavy front focusing with my *istD and were back spot on with my K10D. Not yet checked with the K20D. OK, not enough data for serious statistics, but apparently some lenses keep the same problem irrespectively of the camera model you use them with. With other lenses, issues come and go depending on the body. So you cannot tell for sure whether it's a camera or lens problem. I'd think of it as a mismatch problem. It's a complicated world... 2 - Warning: under certain conditions, the AF test can give you erratic results. I'm rather convinced it mainly depends on the contrast of the situation (test chart+lighting+lens in use). With a given lens and a given lighting, it appears that when the camera thinks the contrast is OK, then it stops focusing without trying to get it even better. That's probably for preventing the risk to go back and forth before focusing properly. Unfortunately, this way you'll have front focusing if you are coming from a closer focus setting and you'll get back focusing when you come from a farther focus setting. Under certain lighting conditions, you can have such problem with a given lens and no problem with another type, probably depending on how contrasty the lens is. So I'd recommend to always perform two focusing tests for each lens correction, one coming from a closer focus and another one from a farther one. If you get the same focus, you are doing well and you can apply the needed correction. If you get different results with the two focusing directions, you are in that odd condition and you have to change the lighting of the test chart for getting useful results. Re: K20D AF calibration data
Paul, I started calibrating the K20D via Remote Assistant on PC. Then I've realized how quicker and still effective the use of the on-camera comparison can be. You don't have to be able to spot the tiniest detail for doing calibration. You just have to be able to recognize similar blur, and that's well doable on the camera screen. By using Tim Jackson's chart, when you see that those 2mm marks above and below the focus mark look the same, then both 6mm marks look the same (more blurred than 2mm) and then 10mm marks are even more blurred than 6mm, but yet similar each other, you've got proper calibration. Otherwise, if say 2mm above is as blurred as 10mm below, while 2mm below and 6mm below look sharper, you've got front focus to fix. In other words, you have to check the overall behaviour in a narrow image area and not the single minor detail. Re: Be careful what you work for
She'll probably still get better results with the K10D and the 18-250 than with most PS cameras. And if she decides she needs a better lens, it's an option... Photozone.de reviewed it recently. It seems a decent performer, within the limits of the kind, on Klaus' test bench. http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/Pentax%20Lens%20Tests/48-pentax/367- pentax-smc-da-18-250mm-f35-63 or http://tinyurl.com/2jwnzp But she is going to need a good flash unit too, to use that lens effectively indoors. The built-in flash unit only has so much power and will likely be occluded by the lens/lens hood at even modest focal length settings. RE: GESO: See ya 'Liz
The Aussies on list might recognise the blue yellow vessel from the news. That's the Customs Fisheries vessel that shadowed the Japanese whaling fleet. P.P.S. Brian, that shot was out 0.38 degrees ;-) I've always wanted to do a Transatlantic crossing on one of the old liners (notice, I didn't say cruise and I didn't say cruiseship. I think my chances may have run out on that one. Wonderful photos! I'd sailed halfway round the world on one before I was 2 years old. In fact, I learned to walk on one. Here's a picture of my nursery: http://www.ozhoo.net.au/~strathsisters/strathnaver/ http://www.ozhoo.net.au/~strathsisters/strathnaver/ They used to take £10 poms out, and service families (like mine) back. The route was quite interesting: Sidney, Melbourne, Fremantle, Colombo, Bombay, Aden, Suez, Marseilles, Gibraltar, Portsmouth? I expect I've missed some out. The one we sailed on, the Strathnaver, was the first passenger ship through the Suez Canal after the Suez crisis. That must have seemed quite ironic to my parents because they'd served in Egypt during the first crisis a few years earlier. PESO: Exercising the K85/1.8
Trying some of my manual lenses with the K20D. I shot this with the K85/1.8. ISO 1600, f2.8, 1/125th. Love this lens. I use it with a metal hood from the Super Tak 200/4 on a step up ring. Makes a nice unit, and of course even that long hood won't vignette on the K20 sensor. http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7040595size=lg -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

RE: PESO - Handtruck
I have to admit, I post this with some reluctance. I like it (although I don't know exactly why), but I'm not sure how it will be received. It's either freaking brilliant, or it's pure trash. You decide. ;-) That being said, I of course want everyone to be brutally honest! http://tinyurl.com/yulfd7 http://bp3.blogger.com/_EaTEtfR4WJw/R9VgHhWq0RI/Brc/AT RXCujmc-Q/s1600-h/mar_10_08+002.jpg cheers, frank the trouble with it is that there are 2 large blocks of white / off-white which distract from the subject matter. The guy's face, and what he's doing, are great and I can see why you were so attracted to the shot. But it's an unfortunate fact of life that in a black and white photograph anything white or near white pulls your eye straight to it and ruins the rest of the shot. yep, great lens. I cherish mine along with all the other K series lenses I have luckily managed to acquire so far. The K85/1.8 and the K200/2.5 are two of my fav telephotos in K mount. The K105/2.8 K120/2.8 and K135/2.5 ain't too shabby either. The original SMC K Lens series definitely RULES! jco -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Paul Stenquist Sent: Monday, March 10, 2008 4:53 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: PESO: Exercising the K85/1.8 Trying some of my manual lenses with the K20D. RE: PESO - Technique
Trying something different. Have a look at this: http://www.cottysnaps.com/snaps/spare4.html R-D1 + 28mm lens (same angle of view as 42mm lens on full frame 35mm) Then take this simple test: 1. What is noticeable about the picture? 2. How do you think it was achieved? It's not a real photograph. It's a trick village, which is in constant orbit around the tree. This is the result of a medieval curse visited upon the village by it's neighbour when the cursed village was discovered cheating during the annual Dripping of the Lepers by entering some lepers who also had plague, and therefore produced more than the standard amount of pus. The curse also explains why, to this day, the people of the village have an inordinate liking for fondue and pork scratchings.
