An M8 with the nifty Voigtlander 28/1.9 Ultron would be perfect for your
style, Godfrey. Gawn, you know you want it.

Thanks to everyone who commented. Frank was right. I was going for
'grim' on the Annandale shot, but there was some black clipping.
Lightened it up a touch.

Thanks, Bob! This is very helpful.

Tenba is located in Westchester, probably a doable commuting distance
for me, and I've thought about approaching them about trying to get a
job or an internship there to see what the business is like, but I'd
be afraid of having to sign a noncompete agreement. :)

2008-04-25 Thread Bob Sullivan
Paul,
Cherry trees are a favorite.
2 came with the house we bought in Wisconsin.
28 years ago, I discovered orange birds working the cherry blossoms.
(While I sat with my baby son sleeping in my lap.)
They were Baltimore Orioles and it's the right time for them now!
We put out orange halves and would like to try jelly,
but have to figure out how to keep the squirrels and racoons away.

PESO(s): Snowfountain Cherry

2008-04-25 Thread Paul Stenquist
I'm an avid gardener, and I have hundreds of trees, shrubs and
perennials. But my Snowfountain Cherry tree is number one.
Unfortunately, there's no real perfect shooting angle. It's in front
of the house, so I can either shoot it with the bare trees across the
street in the background or with the house in the background. This
year I chose the former. So this is more about the tree than the
photo. But It's a tree worth seeing. It produces literally thousands
of blooms that extend nearly to the ground. (They would extend all
the way to the ground save for the fact that the rabbits eat the
branches:-). I've also included a tight shot of a bloom cluster. The
tree was shot with the DA* 16-50 and flash fill, the branch ( a
better shot) with the DA* 50-135. Love the bokeh that lens delivers.

In terms of selecting a correct focal point, mIne appears to be right
on the money as well, and it was a very early camera. But who knows
what this revision is supposed to correct. One certainly can't learn
much on the Pentax Forum. If it would raise the performance of the
continuous autofocus to that of the K20, it would be a worthwhile
revision.

Re: K10D AF HEADS UP

2008-04-25 Thread Paul Stenquist
If you have a problem with the K10D and the A50, it's something other
than what's being discussed on the Pentax Forum. They're talking
about autofocus accuracy or the lack of it. If the A50 won't focus,
it's a mirror box alignment problem.

Well, since we're taking a trip down memory lane, here's one of me and
my motorcycle back in the days when I had hair:

http://www.robertstech.com/temp/24-hour.jpg

From a scan of a print, shot with a Kodak disposable by some passer-by
whom we drafted. Taken just a few minutes after the end of the 24-hour
endurance race. I'm in the middle of the back row and my club t-shirt is
darker than everyone else's because it's soaking wet - I'd just ridden
the last shift (in 95-degree F weather). To my left, in cap and
sunglasses, is Mike Hausknecht, one of our other riders. The other three
riders are the guys squatting in front, Broderick Walker (I think the
only guy in the photo without a beer in hand!), Tommy D'Ettorre and Rick
Bair. All the rest of the people are our crew, volunteers, all.

BTW: *Real* motorcycles have number plates, clip-ons and ground-down
nubbins for footpegs!

If you're using PS maybe try this:

Eating. It can be fun watching the rookie pie eater try not to spill

I made the mistake of making steak & kidney pie once. I used to love
them, but handling kidneys cured me of that.

So hows you pie technique?

Mrs Mac's are another fave of mine. I love their curry pies :-)

There is a local eatery/institution here in Fremantle that has been
around for 80+ years, and they make the best meat pies. With proper
steak & real gravy. Gawd they are good.

The lack of meat pies is a good reason to visit more often :-)

Re: OT: Slide Scanner

2008-04-25 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I use a Nikon Coolscan IV ED that I bought from KEH.com a year or so
back, used, for $235. It is an excellent performer.

To drive it: Nikon's software (which I don't use) is available for Mac
OS X. I use Vuescan, which I like more (http://www.hamrick.com).

However, if you have a *huge amount* of 35mm film negatives and slides
to scan ... read that more than 100 ... it is almost certainly worth
having it done professionally at a good service rather than buying a
film scanner. There's a place that was written up in one of the
professional magazines recently (I can't remember the name or the
magazine just at the moment ... I'll see if I can find it later on
today) that does a very very good job (likely better than anything you
can do with consumer grade equipment like the above), rapid
turnaround, and charges 19 to 25 cents per scan. 1000 scans for $250
will save you money on the scanner and many weeks of your time.

Probably not quite as ideal in terms of rider position, but you can
use either of these if they're suitable:

http://www.gdgphoto.com/iom-rb2-select/content/DSC02746_large.html

I'm not sure I know what "evil" has to do with a motorcycle, though,
unless you are referring to Evil Kanevil or whatever his name was.

Re: OT: Slide Scanner

2008-04-25 Thread Adam Maas
Unfortunately, the scanner you need to do that without severe pain
(the Nikon 5000 ED with the batch slide feeder attachment) will run
about 4 times your budget.

The Minolta Scan Dual III and IV scanners are good options in your
budget if you can find them used, but they have an unfortunate
tendency to die after 3-400 rolls worth of scanning (I speak from
experience here). Scanning with high-end flatbeds is an exercise in
frustration with 35mm, and the ones which can handle enough
slides/negs to make it worthwhile are around twice your budget (Epson
4990 or V700).

You might check out scancafe.com, they do scanning for around 19 cents
a frame for 3000dpi (approximate final resolution of 4500x3000).

My favorite is Mrs. Mac's. Last visit to Oz I won the contest of who of
my wife or myself would have the first and most meat pies. I had a four
and twenty at the MCG while watching an aussie rules match about an hour

Interesting. That might explain why my K20D outperforms my K10D. But
I haven't noticed it as a focus accuracy problem. More as an ability
to achieve fast lock on and good performance in continuous autofocus
mode. From this Pentax Forum thread it's hard to determine what sort
of issues are being resolved. (No suprise there.)

Yes, that's about the closest in FoV and the f/1.4 vs f/1.8 difference
isn't much to speak of but it isn't as good a performer wide open. The
FA43/1.9 Limited is closer in performance, I feel, albeit at a
somewhat tighter FoV. The FA35/2 AL does pretty well too, but it is a
full stop slower and isn't quite as good on rendering out of focus
elements.

There's a reason the FA43 now lives almost permanently on the K10D
body... ! ;-) I hope the upcoming 30mm f/1.4 SDM will come up to this
standard.

Wonderful sharpness, dof is great, exposure with the backlighting is
terrific, composition is top-notch and I like the fish in the bird's
beak.

cheers,

Re: K10D AF HEADS UP

2008-04-25 Thread David J Brooks
I had mine for 16 months before i decided to look into it. I knew last
Feb, 2007, that it was a problem, in the A 50 this time.

When Erin and James bring my K10D back next week, i'll be able to send
it back with the DAF 50 and have them look at it.

Seems to be ok with the FA 100, so it may just be my error in manual
focusing the A50, but i can really see it in the DAF 50

Now I'm really glad I decided to skip the K10 generation, (not enough IQ
improvement from 10mp vs 6mp to justify replacing one or both of my
*ist-D[x]s). Since I do most of my shooting in manual focus I would
probably not have noticed the back focus problem until after the
guarantee had expired. I guess being cheap pays extra dividends...
