World Press Photo 08

2008-05-19 Thread Derby Chang

Managed to spend a good hour or so on Saturday at the World Press Photo
exhib, which rolled into Sydney last week. Interestingly, the jury
president's foreword used the theme that too many photos submitted tried
to look like previous winners. So much so that they lost sight of the
aim of the press photograph. If so, the judges must have filtered well,
because, while less confronting and shocking than last year, I found
each of the photographs at the very least engaging, and at best mesmerising.

http://www.worldpressphoto.org/images/stories/videos/Interviews/index.php?

I highly recommend catching this if you can.

Most recent issues with K10D, help needed

2008-05-19 Thread Boris Liberman
Hi!

Here are two most recent issues that I encountered with my K10D.

1. I've AF confirmation beep enabled. Very often, almost always, when
I walk around with K10D and A 50/1.2 attached, it keeps beeping all
the time. It usually happens when I set the lens to infinity. What
helps is to put my hand on top of the hood so as to block the light.

2. Recently I mounted my DA 21 Ltd. The exposure was all over the
place. At first it started to badly overexpose. I dialed in -1 Ev
correction (a lot from my experience). Then after few shots it went to
normal so that -1 Ev was causing bad underexposure.

Overall, rather unpleasant shooting day for me, gear-wise...

Any input, shared experience, insight, ideas will be most welcome.

Thanks.

RGB to CMYK

2008-05-19 Thread Lasse Karlsson
Hi all,

I'm currently working as an editor of sorts of a book to be published. I've
been doing text editing et cetera but also worked with the photos and
illustrations.
Now the printing house asks me to deliver pictures in CMYK-format.

While I know about and understand CMYK, I have not previously had to do the
CMYK conversion myself, why I now ask for any advice on it, in case there is
someone on the list who's been working with it.

Do I just check the CMYK-option in Photoshop for any photo/picture or are
there other particular steps to be taken or aspects to be considered? My
monitor is not professionally calibrated.

Thanks,
Lasse

If it doesn't have the larger image circle to begin with, all shift will
do is show those limits. Having a shift cannot possibly increase the
size of a lenses image circle. On the other hand tilting might appear
to increase the size of the image circle, but it does not. Image circle
is inherent in the lens design.

Re: Most recent issues with K10D, help needed

2008-05-19 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
You might have a circuitry problem, but do a full reset before you act
on that assumption: pull out the battery and let the camera sit for
three days. (It takes that long for the backup condensors to fully
discharge.) Then re-insert battery and reconfigure the camera.

If problems persist after that, call Pentax.

RE: PESO - Pelicans' Pause

2008-05-19 Thread Anthony Farr
Thanks for the compliment, Peter. In this case the little Nikon Coolpix L6
was just fine for the job, it has a good lens with a decent zoom range, and
the long DOF that comes with the tiny sensor (1/2.5" IIRC) was perfect in
this case. Where it falls down is that it's fully autofocus and programmed
exposure, no manual anything. My wife doesn't like the LCD viewfinder and
wishes it had an optical viewfinder. OTOH it was very cheap, is very
pocketable, and delivers surprisingly good quality.

2008-05-19 Thread Bob Sullivan
Boris,
Questions for you...
The camera shouldn't beep unless it is powered up.
I have mine set to power down after 60 seconds.
Are you beeping after power down?!?
If not, I think beeping is to be expected at infinity.
It is manual focus confirmation, SOP.
Set your the A50/1.2 to a different length or wait for power off or
turn off the beep.
Second, have you cleaned your lens mount on the DA21mm?
Not this month, but yesterday!
I have had some odd exposures clear up immediately after a dis-mount and wipe.
I don't know if it was the re-mounting or the simple wipe with a
handkerchief on the mounting parts.

No, when power is down (after my preset timeout) the beeping ends. It
is just very odd that with this particular lens it goes on beeping for
quite some time. I may have to experiment with other lenses and other
distance settings.

Well, no, I haven't. I tend to keep my gear in a clean (as visible to
my eye and understood by my brain) condition at all times. Again, a
1/3Ev or 2/3Ev is not abnormal, but the 1Ev of missed exposure
triggered my internal alarm, you know.

Re: Most recent issues with K10D, help needed

2008-05-19 Thread Bruce Dayton
One other question is what mode were you using (Matrix,
Center-Weighted or spot) - I have found that matrix can give unusual
readings at times with subjects with minor adjustment to the
composition - the reason is that it is reading the entire frame and
assigning some weight to each part - so the background and foreground
can have a profound effect on the exposure - easily in the range you
experienced. Personally, I almost always use Center-weighted and
don't see those problems. Perhaps something to look in to.

GESO: Airshow

2008-05-19 Thread Patrice LACOUTURE
Hello.

It's been a while since I posted anything...

I've been to an Airshow yesterday in Orange, Provence, France... It
was my first attempt shooting in such an event ever...

Took my K10D with my old 80-320 handheld, and burned a few rolls of
2GB SD cards.

A not-so-tight-selection is visible there:

http://www.lacouture.nom.fr/gallery/v/geso/2008-05-18-Airshow-Orange/

For those on a tight schedule, beware: 65 photos in the gallery. It's
quite out of the box and I did not take much time to edit it more
severely.

As usual, comments and suggestions are welcome.

Regards.

Patrice

PS: for pixel-slicers:

Most shots done in MF/manual exposure, @ f/16 or f/8, ISO 400.
MF because at infinity it's safer than AF
f/8 and f/16 to avoid using this lens wide open
ISO 400 to rely on fast shutter rather than stabilizer to get sharp
results handheld (no tripod, no monopod, no nothing: used my own
biological ball head instead) On second thought I should have opted
for 200.
Post processing = AC correction on a few shots, sometimes a bit of
saturation adjust, otherwise levels/contrast, cropping, and dust
removal.

Thanks, Cotty (and to all who have also commented).

I can't take much credit for that - it's all down to mother

and Pentax lens coatings (together with some very minor level
adjustments from Adobe software during web preparation).

I suspect that the K20D's Dynamic Range Expansion is just a one-stop

If it works anything like Nikon's Active D-Lighting and Sony's DRO, it
is a mild underexposure and a custom curve that brings up shadow and
mid-tone detail. So far, Sony seems to have the best implementation of
this sort of thing as they offer configurable amounts along with an
intelligent mode that picks what it thinks is the correct option,
Nikon's is pretty much the same as Pentax's.

The only real Dynamoic Range extension tech is Fujifilm's dual-sensor
site SuperCCD sensors.

It seems that the Pentax technology selectively underexposes and
overexposes, however, in that the ISO selection range is reduced when

Well - you could set the camera to turn itself off after a short time of no

Inspired by Bob's Geso, i finally got around to photographing my
peices i made in 1980-81.

Ten week class at Sheridan College in Mississauga, these are what made
it safetly from the cooling oven.

One piece was dropped and one never finished.

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7282247

The big blob, centre back row was the first thing i made.

The blue one with the piece out of it, was the only one that was
straight, and the instructor dropped it when she
took it out of the cooling oven. She was in tears, i told her no big
deal, i';ll make another. That one is in front
of it, the orangey one with the handle.

Re: wHICH fLASH UNIT FOR K10D OR K20D

2008-05-19 Thread Tim Øsleby
Sounds neat, very neat. Could sway me towards Metz.

I'm very close to buying a flash, after I found an old Hama flash
bracket at the bottom of a closset. I have found memories about that
piece of equpment. It gave me much better light than on camera flash.
And it made me look pro, as I recall :-)
Now I've grown grey, and with it I will look just almost as cool as
Greywolf with his Speedgraphic PJ setup :-)

Speaking of brackets. It has a standard sync connection. What's my
best options for triggering the flash if I want to have some kind
autofunction? That leaves standard sync out, deosn't it? I'm not very
fond of the wireless system, the flash tends to power down on me when
I need it. So I beleave the Pentax sync is the only alternative left.
Am I right about that?

Patrice,
That is an excellent look at an airshow.
You did very well for a first time shooting such a thing.
I particularly liked the formations with smoke trails.
You do some different maneuvers than I have seen before.
The blue jets with the yellow markings are great.
I especially like the way the yellow crosses show from the bottom.
They are more spectacular than our Navy's all dark blue - Blue Angels.

Re: PESO - Not the usual Bleeding Heart

2008-05-19 Thread Bob Sullivan
Ken,
That's a very pleasing picture.
I have to scroll to see it all, and I like both halves.
The top half is strong with the branch and fine detail where the
flower stem goes down,
followed by the big curves of the pedals.
I like the bottom half for the pointy parts and the texture and
dimension they show.
There is also the repeated pattern of the upward sweeping leaf.
Really nice stuff, you must have good camera equipment! ;-)
Regards, Bob S.

The interesting part of the sky in this image is at the top. It seems
to me that eventually there will be nothing left to this shot except the
schooner...

Nice. I was expecting a more jarring difference between the sunlit
and shade parts of the lovely lady. But you managed quite well here.
Good work.

Very nice. I like the tight crop. Perhaps you could get down to ISO
