No way, mate. :-)

I remember that shot, btw.

My point was that it doesn't produce anywhere near the resolution of,
say, a FA* 300/2.8 (which I played with at Duxford). But it still
gives a good impression of sharpness because of its contrast
rendering. IOW, it's a damn fine portrait lens. :-)

LOL thanks Christine,

I took about 50 shots last night. This one was the last one before the
batteries ran out of juice, so it was a lucky catch in that way... :-)

The site is a fantastic place to practice bird photography. A highly
productive lake in the middle of an Oslo suburb, protected as a
freshwater nature reserve, and with its own passionate fan-club:
http://www.ostensjovannet.no/ (norwegian only...).

The stationary birds there are accustomed to human presence, and have
a soothing effect on the passing migratory species in spring and
autumn as well.

If you just knew the general quality of photos produced at this site,
you'd know that mine would barely pass as "acceptable". :-)

But it's a nice start for a lens ownership, I think! :-)

Sharp, certainly. Amount of resolved detail is not possible to judge
from a web image anyway. You'd have to take my word for that.

I disagree with you. Your picture is more compositionally complicated, not
awkward. The first page of that gallery exemplifies what I have thought for a
while now; that graphically dramatic and simple shots are what people are
attracted to these days. Almost without exception, those pictures look as good
in the thumbnail as they do at "full size", so there is not really much point
in looking at them. I find myself, more and more, clicking on thumbnails which
do not allow me to work out what the bigger picture [8-)] is.

I agree with you that some parts of nature photography has an uncanny
tendency to oversimplification.
I think this happens because the species portraiture genre is
dominated by people whose prime interest lies with the subject rather
than with photography. Ornithologists/birdwatchers, entomologists,
botanists, and so on. But take a look at this pic, for example:
http://www.biofoto.no/galleri.asp?mode=view&pic=ensen

There are _some_ who manage to take technical excellence to extreme
without sacrificing compositional qualities. That's the direction I'm
looking. If I get there I'd be happy, but it's a fair stretch to go.

I remember buying a book by Frans Lanting called "Eye to eye" a while
back. A large, coffe-table thing devoted in its entirety to animal
portraiture. It got boring after the first 30 pages, even with his
talent behind the camera. However, species portraits are by default a
part of any nature photographer's portefolio... :-)

Even so, EBay Aust now does (and will probably continue to) insist that
PayPal be included as a payment option by sellers. Some buyers will
probably use it regardless of whether the buyer likes it or not, given
that PayPal is always the first payment option listed on EBay checkout.

Thanks. "Bird" is vulgar vernacular English for a female of the human species.

It's hard to not compare yourself to friends or others in the field.
But... It's actually a nice shot. Yes, maybe a little messy on the
left, but the interaction between the birds and the birds and their
environment make it an interesting shot. The color and light is great
and with the web-sized image, detail seems fine.

Unfortunately, the Epson is the Voightlander, and more unfortunate is
that Epson doesn't seem in any hurry to produce a follow on product and
just to make this sentence more unwieldy, one of the problems of the
Epson/Voightlander is the lack of good wide angle lenses, due to the
crop factor.

I agree with Ann's comments. It is a super gallery, but we have to
find some way to get more of the phine photographers on the list to
participate and to submit entries to the gallery.

My personal favorites are "Ice Flower" by Kenneth Waller and "Cape

Epson was using Voightlander/Cosina bodies, but it wasn't a
Voightlander project. Rumour does have it that a Zeiss Ikon-based DRF
is under development, and there's also persistent strong rumours that
Nikon has a DRF project as well in either M or Nikon S mount.

Of course e-bay isn't looking out for their best interests, it's looking
out for it's own. If it servers the best interests of anyone else it's
good if not bad and e-bay will lose market share. Changes that have

I've read quite a few articles on travel photography: Taking notes and
researching the destination are usually included as things to do before the
trip. It's also suggested to google the destination & look at photos
already taken to help get a sense of the place. I imagine most photogs do a
little of both--planning & wandering.

Thanks Bob. Your encouragement is much appreciated.
However reaching world class in this photographic segment requires
some sacrifices that I am not willing to make. Such as spending tons
of time in a hide, for example. I feel the itch down my ischias nerve
at the mere thought of it.

Besides, it was more of an effort to adjust the viewer's expectations,
not mine. There's something about this lens that gives very
aesthetically pleasing images if only the focus is right. The optical
properties of this lens gives every shot a sense of rarity. I was just
trying to encourage the audience not to be fooled by it. When I look
through my catch, I easily fall in the same trap myself... :-)

RE: Shooting plan

2008-06-13 Thread John Poirier
Hi Bob

I rarely use shooting lists, not for my current type of work. I've noted
that it's something stock photographers do regularly, though.

What got me out of my lurker's cave was your comment about "looking through
the Magnum web site for inspiration and ideas". Looking at good work makes
a lot of sense, of course, for improving your skills any sort of
photography. I do it all the time.

It did remind me of something that has bemused me of late. This is the
question of visual plagiarism.

I have a very good visual memory. I've looked at several exhibits at a
local gallery recently that contained significant numbers of prints for
which my first reaction was that I had seen the image before. In some cases
I was even able to remember whos idea was being used. Cartier Bresson and
Arnold Newman came to mind.

Over the last ten years I've increasingly had a sense of "sameness" about
images in mainstream photo publications. I find them quite repetitive,
essentially reworkings of previously published material. I also find it
increasingly difficult to distinguish editorial photos from the images used
to promote equipment, which are generally visually arresting but not
necessarily profound.

BTW, my use of the term "visual plagiarism" refers to rather obvious
reworking of others' ideas rather than direct copying.

Is genuine originality disappearing from the photographic mainstream?

What are the groups thoughts on this?

Cheers

John Poirier

No problem, Frank!
I was just teasing, because you're very much right. As I wrote to Bob
S., this lens has a bit of magic built-in, by the way it renders the
image. It is very much the lens at the moment, the photographer is
just playing around to see what it yields. Hopefully I will have time
to play some more tomorrow. Tim Øsleby and I have planned a rendezvous
at Runde by the turn of the month, and I'd very much like to be more
on top of things by then.

We'll be staying at the lighthouse, btw. Check this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runde

Really looking forward to that! :-)

So, seriously, Cotty.

I know you're not a war photographer, but you've used an R-D1 for some
time now, and you seem more than satisfied with it.

Presumably you've read Kambers report. How do you think the R-D1
would stack up vis-a-vis his complaints of the M8? Buffer, low light,
white balance, colour correction, auto exposure and all that?

Ditto. I'm scared to death of Ronnie & Reggie, and they've been dead
for years...

I loathe the celebrity that people give to gangsters like Mad Frankie.
When you read about some of the things they've done it's really
horrible.

Excellent advice from Bob, so while we're on the subject, and if you'd
like some further portrait study, here's a couple of my favourites:

Arnold Newman, especially this classic book which should be on portrait

I'm just about to send this book as a gift to someone - if I'm ever in
the photo-doldrums, I leaf through it and find myself re-energized :)

One famous British photographer (who is so famous his name escapes my
sozzled mind at the moment!) will spend an hour at a sitting. Fifty
minutes talking with and getting to know the sitter, ten minutes for the pic.

You can learn a lot about someone in fifty minutes :)

They were Masons, complete with local Masonic Lodges some 100 years ago.
As a sideline, they began entertaining kids in hospitals and adopted
kids hospitals as a charity cause.
Now they are a bunch of middle aged guys who dress up in funny outfits
at city parades,
riding motor cycles, big and tiny, along with cars, big and tiny, and
help families with seriously sick kids.
I have a lot of respect for them despite the clown image they portray
on the street.

Re: GESO: Anne

2008-06-13 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hello Christine,

You have really hit on it. Portrait work can be very difficult
because you have to produce something, not just record something.
The latter is more about timing and finding the right situation. The
former is first and foremost about attitude.

What happens with portraits is the feeling of the subject really
comes through. If the they are feeling a bit shy or timid, it shows.
Your job is to somehow bring the inner self out and have the person
really show something. It usually means getting them to be very
comfortable - talking and maybe laughing if it is to be a happy
portrait. Once things are comfortable, you just shoot away without
changing the feeling - don't stop and say "now we are going to
shoot" - you just shoot as you continue your talking. It has to be
a fun, enjoyable thing for both of you to have the most successful
 portraits.

It is also easier, I think, to start with a tighter shot - not so
much worry about the background. As the session unfolds, and things
are working, then you can introduce more backgrounds and poses.

 I hope I'm making sense.

Bruce
