OT (Bikey): A robust defence of Elle Macpherson

2008-09-19 Thread Bob W
Here is an interesting article (with which I agree) about the
paradoxical dangers arising from our safety culture:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/sep/19/transport.transpor
t

Interesting quote: "All vehicles are people in disguise, negotiating
the use of common space with each other. They must never be induced to
delegate that obligation to signs and machines. They certainly must
not think themselves safer than others, or they will behave with less
consideration for others as a result."

Re: [Not official] P-TTL Ring Flash from Metz coming ??

2008-09-19 Thread Toine
Now I must make a choice between the Metz and the new Pentax "ring"
flash. The Metz is more compact and has a build in diffusor, the
Pentax has 4 flash tubes. Maybe the price of the Metz will make the
choice for me...

A gallery that's been showing my work off and on for a few years sold

Read the Pop Photo SQF test data and was impressed by the numbers of that
particular copy. Substantially better performance than other comparable range
zooms as well as the DA*300 f/4 for example.
Tested in the the Oct. issue and included on their website.
None the less, I'm still waiting for the DA* 60~250. Maybe in '09.(?)

Similar thing happened at the Manx Senior this year. I think it was a
'Zuki led off down Bray Hill, lunched it's bottom end throwing a rod
through the cases, but the bugger was still making enough power ...
spraying oil like a fire truck sprays water, and running hard enough
that it oiled the entire road three-quarters of a mile. They had to
red flag the race (already a day and an hour or two delayed due to
rain and fog), clean up the road and restart another hour or so later,
reducing the number of laps from 4 to 2.

The rider was only really aware of what had happened as the motor
seized up, out of oil, at the end of that. Quite a mess ...

It took me a while to work out what was wrong. Because the engine lost
power momentarily and then seemed to get it back before stopping, I
thought it was an electrical problem at first: Then engine stopped when
I pulled in the clutch (fortunately) and I didn't find out it had
actually seized up until back at the paddock. After various atteempts to
get it started failed I took off an engine side cover and discovered the
crank wouldn't turn :(

It was then that my friend Tommy D gave me some good advice that I'll
always remember: "If it's a catastrophic failure -- and it looks like it
is -- my advice is: There's a big pot of spaghetti in the motorhome. Go
Have some spaghetti."

Even bad things sometimes turn into good memories!

Re: PESO - Spark plugs

Yes, almost certainly a dropped valve. Many years ago I worked as an
engine builder for fuel funny cars. When an engine dropped a valve,
it disintegrated, sometimes blowing the cars body apart. Of course
that was due to the fact that the intake manifold above the valve
contained a litre or so of nitromethane pressurized at about 50 psi.
When things go wrong in an internal combustion engine, bad things
happen.

Yeah, it's /way/ rich. Think of it this way, it's part of what farmers
ate at o-dawn-thirty to keep them going until lunchtime. There's really
not much to it, IIRC, but I never learned to make brown or red eye gravy

houses. I /had/ to learn to make biscuits from scratch before I moved

Well, I've only had biscuits and gravy when I've been down to GFM, so
that's what, three trips now? Anyway, the gravy certainly didn't
taste like mushroom soup. It ~was~ quite delicious, but it was
~rich~!! I've never tasted anything quite like it.

Having since turned vegetarian, I don't suppose that I'll ever have
the guilty pleasure again, but the memories will always be with me.

The story: In 1993 I put together a team to ride the last motorcycle
24-hour endurance race to be held at the (in)famous Nelson Ledges road
course (http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2004/jul/onthisweek10.htm). We
rode my Yamaha FZR400 and did very well under brutally hot conditions,
taking 3rd place in the 600cc class (because they'd eliminated the
lightweight class). The following spring I rebuilt the engine (running
at/near redline for the best part of 24 hours is pretty taxing on both
man and machine!) but, because I was coming off a long bout of
unemployment, I was almost broke. I did all the work myself, putting in
pistons, rings, main and rod bearings. I just didn't have enough money
to put in new valve springs. I thought I could put it off for a race or
two. The photo shows how wrong I was!

Re: Leak: Pentax K-m (yeah that's the new one) and other tidbits....

2008-09-19 Thread Adam Maas
My frank opinion is the K200D was already cut down enough for that
pricepoint, it was just sold for too much money, If anything losing
the weather sealing and dropping the price to a competitive point in
most markets would have made more sense (Of course, if the K-m is
exactly that with a couple other minor changes, good for Pentax, they
simply haven't been a presence in the low-end market for the last 9
months).

I don't mind the loss of the top display (I don't find them terribly
useful compared to a well laid out rear display. Sony and Oly have got
it right here)

The 15/4 Limited is a very good idea. The rest are bloody obvious
launches, but it's nice to see them.

I never heard a thing. Just had a momentary loss of power and then the
motor locked up solid - fortunately in the slowest part of the track

That's good to hear, but why wouldn't they include it with the
package? ProPhoto RGB has been around for quite some while now and is
the best colorspace to edit in with digital capture images,
particularly RAW captures.

But enough ... NX2 is not a tool that I would use, although testing it
I was impressed that it was better than I'd expected. It doesn't do
what I want/need as well as LR2, nor does it support the RAW files I
need to manage and edit.

If the FA limiteds continue in production, I guess this means that they will be
assembled at that troubled Hanoi plant. If you want a good one, buy it now
while the made-in-Japan ones are still available. Or maybe the FA limiteds will
just be discontinued.

I don't know what this means for the FA 35 F2.0 and the FA 50 F1.4. Will they
be discontinued, or produced in Vietnam?

This may be the end of the line for made-to-order copies of the FA* 300 F2.8
and FA* 600 F4, unless those too will be assembled by Nguyen.

That's usually what happens when a valve breaks and falls into the

Those ancients weren't so advanced at all.

Look at photo C. It's clearly the filter basket from a coffee percolator.

Re: OT Nikon Capture NX2

2008-09-19 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Adam,

So your comments piqued my interest and led me to take a look at
Capture NX2. I downloaded and installed it on my PowerBook G4 15" and
have gone through the reference manual. I went through several JPG and
TIFF files, and had a friend with a Nikon D300 send me a couple of NEF
files (a couple each taken at ISO 200, 400, 1600, 3200 in two
different kinds of lighting). I processed the NEF examples in LR2
first, then in NX2.

NX2 is pretty good ... performance is actually decent on this old
single processor system. I wouldn't say that I'm expert in its use by
any means, but I can get around in it without too much difficulty. I
read up on the Control Point stuff and played with it. Cute but
there's little there that I cannot do in LR2, more easily at present
since I know it better. I don't see that its editing capabilities as
being that much different, really, although the UI is very different.
It has a couple of niceties, LR2 has others. I also don't see that it
does all that much different a job on the NEF RAW conversion, even at
ISO 3200. One major omission in my opinion is no support for ProPhoto
RGB.

But no image management, no off-line image location services, simple
printing without templates, only NEF RAW support, no DNG support, etc
etc.

One of the things I did like which I wish LR2 had was the ability to
set a couple of watch points and see in numbers how adjustments affect
them. I can see the numbers in LR2 very easily, but it's always
dynamic and moves with the mouse. I'll send in a feature enhancement
request ... i think that's occasionally a useful tool.

Godfrey

Avast.

ps: Actually, the pirate's life must have been one of the most
miserable one can imagine. Being a sailor back then would have
miserable - scurvy, keelhauling, violence, hardtack, bad water, all
that stuff. Being a pirate would be all that and worse, I'd think.

Nice to see it's being turned into a fun day for the kiddies...

I wonder if Samsung is. They are big enough they could likely
buy Hoya. I doubt they'd do that, but they might make an offer
for the Pentax camera division, leaving Hoya the endoscopes.

I agree, but it's a big hill to climb for them. They need to make a
high end camera and then get enough highly visible photographers to use
it in order for it to be seen. I wonder if Hoya is willing to invest
that kind of money up front.

What's always the problem is Pentax assuming that because all the money

is made on low end cameras, all you need to build are low end cameras:

You need a high end camera to impress newbies into buying your low end

cameras. The 1Ds mkIII is almost as much a marketing tool for the
Rebels
as it is a photographic instrument.

In all seriousness, I think Pentax has learned this lesson, but it took

them a while. I also suspect the Nikon D700 and Sony A900 have probably

killed off Pentax's planned high end APS-C camera and we'll have to
wait
for the Samsung full-frame sensor to be ready.

Definitely more "pop" there... but it's a little more confusing now -
the gravel/rocks are now so bright that it almost looks like the yard
is covered in snow!

I don't know if that's good or bad, but that's how it struck me when I
looked at it. Take it for whatever it's worth.

Nice shot. Very dramatic.
Don't forget you can also use curves to brighten the midrange without
changing your blacks or highlights. Just push the middle of the curve.
