RE: White K2000 pics
Unfortunately for the climate modellers solar output went in the shitter with the current solar cycle and all of the common models assume a relatively stable solar output (since they're designed to model earth-based changes to the climate). Nobody except the historians have anything approaching an accurate idea of what's going to happen to the climate if the current solar cycle stays on its low-output course, or worse if the next Solar Cycle is similarly low). And the historical data presupposes a starting point distinctly warmer than 2006/2007 (The Medieval Optimum Period which ended between 1200 and 1250AD with the start of the Little Ice Age). whatever the causes of climate change, and whether it's good or bad overall, it does have some interesting side-effects and benefits: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7580294.stm Bob -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Time Travel
Paul, I think our life experiences change as well. I look back now as a father or potential grandfather at these little babies. I think of my aunt behind the camera, recently married and within 1 year having her own daughter. It is what the picture shows and what it makes you think thru. It is time travel - to meet yourself as a child or your Aunt as a young adult. Regards, Bob S. This reminded me that a key advantage of digital is that it is tidy. Instead of shoeboxes and closets and drawers full of photos, things are neatly stored on hard drives, catalogued by date in Lightroom. It also reminded me of a key disadvantage of digital. I pulled out slides and negs I shot in 1965, and they're a bit dusty and faded, but viewable with a light box and loupe, and printable. Will anybody be able to view my DNGs in 2051? Re: testing the G1 ...
I hope the finder is better than the one on the Nikon Coolscan 5700. It was ok for static shots, but the delay caused it to be unusable for most action shots - push button and get a slightly different image than when you pushed button. Try shooting birds and kids with that ! It was a great camera, I really appreciated the articulated viewfinder for getting shots where I couldn't stick my head - like the underside of instrument panels and other situations where I could position the camera body and move the viewfinder so it could be viewed during image capture. Well, the traffic looks a little nicer than when I drive into San Francisco each week going through the maze grin. I like the tone of the shot - basically I feel the traffic is meant to give me a colder, hollower feeling and the sky and overall look work well for that. The traffic, on the other hand, seems just not quite right. The car lights are on, but not bright enough to give you a feeling of either motion or stopped (bright brake lights). The opposite lanes are difficult to really see for comparison. So for me, kind of medium - not great, but not bad. -- Best regards, Bruce Saturday, December 20, 2008, 9:46:45 AM, you wrote: BL Hi! I do - matter of fact, just bought myself a working Mx, a second one to restore, and will keep using film as long as I can. Film cameras are rather cheap now, so it's possible to assemble a dirty gear spending less than $150, so there's no worry about damaging or losing $$, and I'm going where I never had the courage to carry my LX - and if my gear gets stolen, I very much doubt the thief is going to develop my films... no pic taken with that gear is going to appear anywhere. There are lots of places to go where 35mm negative film is promptly available and correctly developed. I intendo to go more digital soon, but as long as there's film, I'm using it. Film is more expensive to use than a DSLR after a fairly short number of exposures. AND the primary cost of using a SLR/DSLR system is in cost of the multiple lenses, not the single body. I have shot over 4000 frames with my DSLR camera in two years, film and film developing alone, no prints, would have cost much more than the $350 I paid for the DSLR, not to mention the value of all the time saved. Re: Its almost 2009 - Who's still shooting 35mm film?
Its almost 2009 - Who's still shooting 35mm film? I've been meaning to use my film slitter to put some low-ISO slide film through my Auto110. Well, I've been meaning to do it for two years now. I doubt it will happen in the near future. I have no plans to shoot film otherwise, even though I bought a ZX-5n a few months back (just in case). Film just isn't worth the cost compared to what can be done with my K10D. Right about all that - in the first world anyway. If I buy a K20d here in BR I'm going to expend something like $1500~1700... just the body with the kit lens. My best Mx was $120 with a very clean 50mm 1.7. There is a lot of film in the difference (negative 35mm by Fuji, $5 apiece, developed and scanned). Yes, I will buy the K20d one of these days. To complement my gear. My $120 loss if I damage the Mx is NOT stopping me to use it. The moment I lose $1700 I'll be very angry indeed. I don't shoot that much, so that difference is not hurting so much. In the future (near, I hope) I'll do a lot of shooting with the digital. But as long as I have the gear and the film so cheap, I'm using it. Actually, I think I'll be using film as long as I can. hi, you can get 6 MP Pentax DSLRs used but working fine for under $300 now on ebay from sellers that will ship to any place on earth. Even a 6Mp is close to film in quality, actually superior with respect to grain. As have I. Kodak Royal Gold 100. I think the last time I shot film was five years ago. Perhaps we need a NorCal meet specifically to shoot film. Of course that means we need to find somewhere to get it developed; I'm not letting CostCo scratch my negatives. On Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 10:44:55AM -0800, Bruce Dayton wrote: Not I, said the cat. Re: Its almost 2009 - Who's still shooting 35mm film?
Two reasons, the first being look (fast BW has a unique look and film produces a colour rendition that can be hard to achieve with digital, particularly in the reds) the second being I simply enjoy working with the simple, well built cameras better. There's little reasonable options in digital that can match the feel of a high-end manual focus 35mm body or the simplicity of a mechanical 35mm SLR. I get both with my F2a and FM2n. -Adam On Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 1:37 PM, JC OConnell hifis...@gate.net wrote: Why? Re: Its almost 2009 - Who's still shooting 35mm film?
While that is true for Pentax kit, it's not in some other systems. How much film could you shoot for the $4500 price difference between a F5 and a D3? High-end 35mm film SLR's are, with very few exceptions, cheaper than even a cheap DSLR. $350 easily gets me into an F5. -Adam On Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 1:42 PM, JC OConnell hifis...@gate.net wrote: Film is more expensive to use than a DSLR after a fairly short number of exposures. RE: Its almost 2009 - Who's still shooting 35mm film?
... 100% right. The Brasilian issue starts with the shipping - let's assume another $100 ($400). Now add Import taxes of 60% over combined price ($640). That's a huge step from the K20d indeed, and the difference to my Mx falls to $500, or just 100 rolls of film. Last year I shot 14 - now I'm using a digital PS to cover my family reunions. I'm going digital asap. But even then I'm willing to risk up to $200 wandering aroung with 35mm films. I just don't want to bother with loss of gear anymore. I'm pretty tired of whacking thieves with my walking stick, and getting older to outrun them either... ;-) Atually buying used gear involves another issue - if I'm lucky enough to buy a damaged camera, I'm paying SH and import taxes over it anyway. I'm trying to get hold of a new K2000, at least. I do think I'm within grasping range in 2009. It will be fundamental to my photography comeback, the same as the oldies. About 30 rolls of 35mm and 10 - 15 rolls of 120/220 per year. I like the look of Velvia and I figure if I want black and white images then I may as well shoot black and white film. I like the handling of my Pentax film cameras better than my *ist D. Also, I have a better selection of Pentax lenses for 35mm than I do for digital (especially at the wide end), and I am reluctant to spend a lot of money on DA lenses because I'm not sure about the long term viability of the APS size sensor format. Finally, I persist with film because I still have some old Miranda cameras and lots of Miranda lenses from the '60s and '70s. Optically they are gorgeous. In the last year I've shot about a dozen rolls of BW 620, (assorted types but mostly TMAX 100), well 120 respooled onto old 620 spools really, in an old Kodak Medalist, maybe 96 frames all together. I also picked up a half dozen rolls of TMAX 400, (not my faviorite film but at about a buck a roll too good a deal to pass up), 135-36 to shoot in my MX and LX just for the joy of using such beautifully made equipment, though I haven't used it yet. Hum, yonder blizard seems just made for draging out an LX or MX and shooting some clasic BW snow scenes. -Original Message- From: JC OConnell hifis...@gate.net Sent: Dec 20, 2008 1:00 PM To: 'Pentax-Discuss Mail List' pdml@pdml.net Subject: Its almost 2009 - Who's still shooting 35mm film? Pretty much, never. I occasionally put a roll through a new m42 camera I've added to my collection but even that seems to be a chore. I recently fired off a short roll in a Voigtlander VSL1 - took about 3 months to finish the roll I'd like to put some film though my Super A, I really would. But digital is just too seductive. RE: Its almost 2009 - Who's still shooting 35mm film?
Finished off two rolls last week, one colour and one of TX-100. Used the colour in a Russian copy of an early Leica , amazed to find again how good the Industar lens is for the price. Flares like crazy in cross-lighting, but good resolution and colour balance. Shot the TX-100 in a Spotmatic: the battery was playing up however, and I didn't have time to get a new one, so I went back to estimating the exposure from the Sunny 16 rule. It will be interesting to see how close I can still get it! I still have a couple of rolls in the fridge, as well as some VP-120 for my Rolleicord - I'll have to shoot it soon, I really like using those old, often manual cameras. With the Rollei I use a Sekonic light-meter, which is still dead accurate although probably over 30 years old. Re: Its almost 2009 - Who's still shooting 35mm film?
I am still shooting film for creative, personal and non-commercial projects. I still have a lot of film cameras (manual focus mechanical types like the MX with one odd MZ3) to keep active and keep my imagination and skills tested. I just shot off my last roll of Ilford Delta and processed it (D76) and wondering if I should replenish anything along that line since I can convert to BW anytime from digital shots and even color film photos (http://www.flickr.com/photos/bongmanayon/3094352907/). I would continue to use slide film for my sunsets as long as someone processes them here in the Philippines (as of now, only one lab handles E-6). I could never *consistently* catch the ball of the setting sun without reducing it to a messy hotspot with a DSLR, so I always have a slide film along (see http://www.flickr.com/photos/bongmanayon/2964383536/). From: AlunFoto 008/12/19 John Sessoms jsessoms...@nc.rr.com: I don't want to switch brands, but if Pentax continues on the course they're presently on, I may not have a choice. If it does turn out that way, I ain't going quietly. You know, What I really don't understand is why K?ningsegg can not make me a truck when I want one, and why Budweiser never can come up with a decent beer. So far I've gone quietly about this, but following your advice, I think I shall join the relevant forums and tell the world how those companies _should_ have done their business. Thanks for the inspiration. You're welcome, although I think you still miss the point. AFAIK, K?ningsegg has never manufactured trucks, any more than Budweiser has ever manufactured decent beer. Pentax, OTOH, has a history to live up to. And, if this isn't a relevant forum to discuss the shortcomings of Pentax's current offerings, there is none. I'll let this be my last comment on the subject. I think Pentax is pursuing a course that will not increase their market share, nor contribute to their long term viability. If Pentax continues on the course they're on, a year or two years from now Pentax won't be in the camera business. I hope I'm wrong. But ... Who on this list is going to buy a white K2000? Re: testing the G1 ...
This EVF is *almost* optical in quality. It is way beyond the best prior EVF I used ... the Konica Minolta A2 ... and that was much better than the Coolscan 5700 or Sony R1 EVFs. I haven't tried tracking birds with it but I don't think it will have much difficulty.
