Some Christmas reflections

2008-12-25 Thread AlunFoto
Hope you all have a wonderful time, folks.

Here in Oslo, there's nearly no snow left after a week of mild
weather. But it turned cold tonight. The roofs in the neighborhood
were all white with frost as the sun rose. Sunrise happens between
8:30 and 9:00 here at this time of year. It's a long and beautifully
coloured procedure, best enjoyed with a large much of coffee.
Barefoot, wrapped in a morning gown, and as many soft blankets as
necessary; in a good chair before an eastward window.
While there's not a lot of warmth in the sunlight now, it still
suffice to evaporate the frost on the unshaded faces of the roofs. It
creates a mosaic of strong, wet colours; and frosty pastels.
Who needs a white Christmas anyway?
My second mug of coffee is drained. The kids are awake but quitely
occupied. The soft morning light, the excess of coffee, the slight
hangover and the over-indulgence in food all comes together into some
pretty mushy thoughts:

After last night's socialising with family, I wish for next year to
bring many more occasions to do so.
After last night's presents I won't have time to take photos until mid- January.
After last night's meal I don't have to forage again until New Year.
After last night's drink, I swear I won't touch Aquavit again until
next Christmas.

Today's cuppa and quiet has reinforced the memory of the first and
smoothed the effects of the latter two. It's a wonderful time of the
year. I'll have to see what can be done about taking photos anyway.

Thanks for reading my crap. Now go back to enjoying yourselves. You're
worth it. :-)

Best wishes,
Jostien

If i knew i had a choice.:-)

We had quite a bit of snow and wind leading up to Christmas Eve this
year. Late in the afternoon, the temp rose a bit and we had rain till
late in the evening. Not enough to wash away 2-3 feet of snow in this
area.

Nice to have a white Christmas, but, it can go next week, after i do
my photo trips and back to driving.

Erin is in her mid 20's now and with fiance, so she has the family
shuffle to work on. After a Christmas drink in the hot stove lounge,
they came over and opened up our gifts to them Christmas Eve, then off
to James house for the traditional lobster dinner.(well it looks like
a tradition any way.:-)) They went away arguing who was going to put
the coruscation's in the water.

My big gift to me from Erin was a Lowepro Pro Tekker AW II. Man this
sucker is huge, but I can fill it,

LOL

Best whishes

All of these have been impressive to look at when you post them.

The 50-135 is around $999 Canadian now, and the 60-250 looks like
$1700 or there abouts.

I have seen whar my D2H can do indoors with not so great light, but
cannot test the K10D properly with out some fast zoomage.
I have the 77 and DA F 50 but need longer than that for the most part.
I suppose i could do some, along the rail shots with the 77 and that
might give me some ideas.

I get only what I buy myself, but I like it that way. I guess my gift
to me falls somewhere in the photography realm, at least the visual
realm. I bought myself a Thomson ADVC 110 analog-to-digital video
converter, and I'm now in the process of recording some twenty year
old family videos to DVD digital. It works great. I'm pleased. I also
have a lot of old commercials I produced on 3/4" video. I'm going to
buy a u-matic tape deck on ebay and convert those as well. Those u-
matic decks, which once sold for $2000 or so, are now about 50 bucks
plus shipping. Actually, I might be able to get one of the local ad
agencies to give me one. They've been rendered useless by digital.

No photo related gifts for me, but a wonderful harvest anyway. A bird
feeder made by my younger son, a shoe-horn made by my daughter, and a
new pillow from The Wife. My oldest boy has been creating something in
his welding lessons which he didn't quite finish until Christmas, but
we have accepted the delay. :-)

I also got a complete trilogy by a Norwegian author; Lars Saabye
Christensen. He's an author I have always "saved for later", never
getting around to reading any of his stuff though I've meant to. He's
much acclaimed here in the Frostpit, but I've no idea how his books
are in translation. However he has achieved enough fame abroad to have
his own page in the English Wikipedia, at least. :-)

I look much forward to reading them.

A very nice minimalist image !
Was there a main reason for you getting the G1?

Thanks Ken!

In no particular order ...

- Compatible with all of my other FourThirds equipment

- Higher resolution sensor ... particularly for wide angle work ...
and since most of my printing is a very good fit to the 3:4 and 1:1
format, it's more pixels in absolute terms than a 14Mpixel 2:3
proportion sensor for my needs.

- Live View with articulated LCD, Live Histogram really helps me on
tripod work

- Adaptability to a HUGE range of fast prime lenses ... including 35mm
RF lenses! ... with the best viewfinder I've found for working manual
focus with short focal length lenses to date. I find it even better
than an optical rangefinder for the Nikkor 20mm lens, for instance.

- Compact and light weight kit for my preferred photographic
predilections ... A G1 and a four lens kit of my favorite fast lenses
take up less space than an SLR and two lenses in my bag, and weigh
less too.

In essence, the G1 is the first example of the camera I envisioned
within a week of buying my first 5Mpixel prosumer camera (the Sony DSC-
F707). To me, this is the direction that camera technology should go.
I'm delighted with how well Panasonic has done even in this first
product offering of a new camera paradigm, and feel there are great
things to come of it.

Yes, as it happens (although they were books that I had dropped hints
about)

Both are catalogues from exhibitions by Australian photographers:

"A Modern Vision - Charles Bayliss, Photographer 1850-1897)" - here's a
link to a pdf version of the book..

"David Moore - The Unseen Images". Moore was one of Australia's top
contemporary photographers who sadly died in 2003. Some of his work is
here:

Oh - and I have an Asahiflex IIA en route from the USA which is my

I bought myself a k20d two weeks ago, so I was off to a good start ;o)

My brother-in-law gave me the magic lantern guide, my mother-in-law
gave me a Kata digital rucksack 467 bundled with a Manfrotto modo
monopod, and through some gift cards, my grandparents-in-law helped to
give me the battery grip and an extra battery!

I may have a few other things, but I won't know until next week. We
(my husband, dog, and cat) were supposed to drive to Floirda on Monday
for Christmas with my whole family, but I ended up in surgery to have
my gall bladder removed :o( The good news there is that everyone feels
so bad about how I missed Christmas that I may get some good presents
out of it!

Hmm. I think I spot a trend.
Once the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD wars ended we decided to get ourselves
a Blu-Ray player. We ended up with a PS3.
Anyone for "Lego Batman"? (Or "Oblivion"?)

We'll probably envy you Wii owners when the next "Zelda" game
comes out - we bought a game cube pretty much just to play those.

Hey Dave, congrats on the flash! It's a good one.

Nate got me the D90, so I put it through its paces today. I won't get
to see the shots on my computer till Saturday, but man, what a fun

Nate bought himself a G1 and both lenses for it about a month ago, and

Kind of the opposite for me; I gave my GF a Manfrotto 190XPROB to use with

Does getting a day free so I can go out and actually do some photography
count?

Got up at Zero Dark Thirty this morning and drove down to Lake
Mattamuskeet to photograph birds. Best day I've had in a long time. I
saw more birds than I was actually able to capture. I had a couple of
Bald Eagles show up, but they stayed out at extreme range, and I'm
afraid all the shots I got are going to be too soft.

But I did get some good shots of Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons,
using the car as a "blind".

No new toys ... yet. Have to see what the AFTER Christmas sales might
offer.

I'm dreaming of a nice *BIG* LCD display, but I'll probably end up
settling for some more memory cards.

Anyone have thoughts on when Pentax might launch a K30D? I'm currently
leaning toward possibly skipping the K20D.

I'm not making money from photography, and I need some income from it
before I can justify upgrading.

That'll be dyeline paper, a diazo process. Ilfochrome / Cibachrome also
used azo dyes, which are dyes that whose chemical bonds somehow break down
when exposed to strong or UV light, leaving the unexposed part to be
developed to an autopositive image (same ultimate result as reversal but a
different chemical process). Dyeline paper is developed in ammonia fumes.
If you handle any freshly developed dyeline paper you MUST NOT handle any
other film or photographic paper until you've thoroughly washed your hands,
because ammonia will completely fog them, whether they're exposed or not.

Yes, a Promaster 7500EDF flash. It is P-TTL and works with the K20 for
sure. Probably all the others as well.
It works in wireless mode from the pop-up flash, but only in manual
mode. Power levels are available from 1/1 to 1/16. It will also do
multiple discharges at 1/16 power over a preset period. You have to
compute the shutter speed to encompase all the flashes. Migh be neat
for some motion studies at night. :-)

Hope everyone had a great Christmas, Hannukh, or whatever!! God Bless
each and everyone of you!!!

Marnie, my son and his wife are here for Christmas and he is the proud
owner of a new Xsi. It has been a great camera for him and I am most
proud to say he is learning fast. He has shared some recent pics and I
am most pleased with his efforts to date. He is 26 and had never shown
an interest until the past couple months. Dad is pleased!

Nope. I got all that stuff when I got the D700 a few months back.

I got a country roads map book, DVD's, socks & chocolates:

And I think I must have had too many of the chocolates, too much beer
& too much wine yesterday, because I had a terrible nightmare.

I dreamt I picked up my camera bag and walked off with it, only to
realise some time later it was unusually light. I look at it and the
flap is open & the bag is empty. After retracing my steps I find
scattered parts of one lens & the others elements are all cracked &
crazed like shattered safety glass.

It was not a nice way to wake up on Boxing Day I can tell you.

Re: OT Some winter observations

2008-12-25 Thread Luiz Felipe
well, I do agree this thread should be over. I do agree about how important it
is to know when to pull or not to pull the trigger. but please don't assume my
jokes reflect my real intentions... I'm not that transparent ;-)

for the record, I've being a gun owner and user for 26 years of my life, since
the moment BR law would allow me to do so. in those 26 years I never pulled any
trigger in an unlawful manner. no, I don't take full credit for that - many
persons (my father first and foremost) helped me understand how deeply we are
responsible for each and every action we undertake. for I'm happy to belong to
a club where we don't blame anyone else for our life. guess I'm not going to be
seen on Geraldo or Oprah. :-(

also for the record, my friend and lawyer Daniel has my full confidence, and I
do believe he knows it. but trust me when I say he's fully aware of my care
with my actions - we happen to think about the same way about life. and neither
of us is going to undertake spurious lawsuits aiming at extortionary
settlements... our fathers would not aprove.

Arrived on Xmas Eve...

Finally got my $100 gift card from B&H after them sending me three K20
Warranty Extension cards.

Bought myself a Verilux clamp lamp for print evaluations. And an 8 gig
jump drive.

Sister Ada gave me a Yellowstone T shirt with the local inhabitants on
it. No photogs though...

And of course over the last 3 weeks I've received almost every DA*,
DA, and DA-F lens currently available from my insurance company to
replace the stolen gear, along with three Limiteds. No DA* 300 ƒ2.8
though. But I already have the Tamron version.

I guess they felt bad for me. :-)

m645 advice - was Re: Any one get any photo stuff from under the tree

2008-12-25 Thread Jon Paul Schelter

I've been thinking about an upgrade to a K20D, D300 or D700...

Instead of wading into the madness that is high tech, my Anna got me a
Mamiya 645 - looks like the original to me, with a penta-prism finder
- I don't really know a lot about it, but I'm excited to try it out.
It seems to be in great working order. It came with an 80mm f/2.8.

Does anyone have advice or pointers for a novice? I'm going to need a
light meter, I guess, although I *imagine* that I can use my *istDS to
give me an EV. Is there anything I should know about moving to a
6x4.5 format? The viewfinder is beautiful, and makes me think that I
might actually be able to take a manually focused shot. It also makes
me wonder at how dependent I am on technology these days.

Happy Holidays to all.

I just go with the upgrade path. I do make a fair amount of money from
photography, and upgrading seems a logical path in any case. When a
K30D is released, I'll sell my K10D. It all makes sense, but perhaps
I'm operating in a different world. I don't buy new toys, but I do buy
new tools, and so far that has worked for me.

Got up at Zero Dark Thirty this morning and drove down to Lake
Mattamuskeet to photograph birds. Best day I've had in a long time.
I saw more birds than I was actually able to capture. I had a couple
of Bald Eagles show up, but they stayed out at extreme range, and
I'm afraid all the shots I got are going to be too soft.

But I did get some good shots of Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons,
using the car as a "blind".

No new toys ... yet. Have to see what the AFTER Christmas sales
might offer.

I'm dreaming of a nice *BIG* LCD display, but I'll probably end up
settling for some more memory cards.

Anyone have thoughts on when Pentax might launch a K30D? I'm
currently leaning toward possibly skipping the K20D.

I'm not making money from photography, and I need some income from
it before I can justify upgrading.

If it's a Mamiya 1000S model, that was my first medium format SLR
which I owned in 1981-1983. An excellent camera with good lenses,
focal plane shutter, etc.

Try to keep your hand-held exposures shorter than 1/60 second. The
older Mamiyas would bounce a bit from mirror shock, you need a good
solid tripod for good results at slower shutter speeds.

While you can use the *ist DS as a light meter, I'd recommend buying a
small, simple ambient light meter. I like the Sekonic L-208 Twin Mate:
simple analog readout scale, very accurate, sensitive enough for most
hand-held work at least. It costs around $100 and does a great job.
(I've owned and been using one for a decade or so, so this is not just
a "pick the cheapest out of a catalog" recommendation. ;-)

If you've got more to spend, the digital Sekonic L358 Flash Master can
do it all. It's about $260, is still compact but larger than the L208,
and has more sensitivity, features, etc than you can shake a stick at.
It will meter for ambient and flash, and combinations. Well worth the
money. My flash meter is the earlier model L328 Flash Mate, which I've
also had for a decade or more, and it produces perfect reference
calibration for any camera's built in meter.

Good luck with it.

Godfrey

BTW: If anyone else wants to enjoy learning/shooting medium format
film, I have my Pentax 645 kit up for sale. Body, two lenses, two film
magazines, caps, etc, a few other small accessories. Write me if
you're interested.

Instead of wading into the madness that is high tech, my Anna got me
a Mamiya 645 - looks like the original to me, with a penta-prism
finder - I don't really know a lot about it, but I'm excited to try
it out. It seems to be in great working order. It came with an
80mm f/2.8.

Does anyone have advice or pointers for a novice? I'm going to need
a light meter, I guess, although I *imagine* that I can use my
*istDS to give me an EV. Is there anything I should know about
moving to a 6x4.5 format? The viewfinder is beautiful, and makes me
think that I might actually be able to take a manually focused
shot. It also makes me wonder at how dependent I am on technology
these days.

That's nice, John, but it seems just a bit oversharpened in this

Guess I should add to the thread. I mentioned in passing that I was
able to capitalize on the Adorama deal recently and ordered the
K20D/kit lens. This was my Christmas present. Worked well as my old
backup *istD and 3 lenses were given to my 2nd daughter for
Christmas. Now the K20D becomes primary and the K10D becomes backup.

2008-12-25 Thread Adam Maas
Great camera, I had an M645 before moving up to my Mamiya 645 Super
with all the toys (winder, AE prism, 4 lenses, 3 backs). You can use
the DS as a meter for the most part. Mirror Lockup is your friend
below 1/60th (and put it on a tripod at those speeds), although if you
have an M645J, you won't have Mirror Lockup (it's on the M645 and
1000s models only, of the original M645 bodies).

The lenses are excellent and cheap. I recommend the 55/2.8 and 150/3.5
as good companions to your 80. The 80/1.9 is cheap and drool-worthy as
well.
