Howdy folks,

I joined the list this afternoon, after meeting John Francis at a
photo-meetup lunch I instigated. Some of you may know me as "ellarsee"
on the dpreview pentax forum. Ellarsee is just a funny way of spelling
LRC, my initials (and part of my destiny to be an Electrical Engineer,
but I digress, often).

My involvement with photography seems to be a very common profile. In
1973, when I was 12, Dad got a Spotmatic II and taught me some of the
basics. I'd frequently play with the camera, setting up shots,
exposure etc. but rarely actually taking any shots. Someplace, there's
a print of my first photograph, but I haven't seen it in a while. The
following summer, I took photography in summer school and learned the
basics of darkroom work. My first camera was an Argus C3, which I
still have. That September I got a used Minolta SRT-101. Sometime
around then, Dad and I set up a darkroom which I spent a lot of time
in over the next several years, until my folks got divorced and Mom
rented out the downstairs apartment.

I had intermittent darkroom access in college, but after I lost access
to a darkroom, photography became something I did, but not
seriously. Lest this post rival a Norse saga in length, I'll skip
forward to November 2007 when I bought my K100D super. I almost got a
Nikon D40 but when I found out about the Pentax, came to the
conclusion that even if Pentax didn't have any offerings at the top
end, what they did offer gave a lot more for the money than Nikon. I'm
afraid that I've never shot a Canon SLR that "felt good in my
hands". The plan was that the K100 and kitlens should be enough to
last me a couple years until the performance that I wanted was
"affordable". My favorite lens on 35 had been the Vivitar 28-105 and
the kit lens was not too far from the equivalent range.

One of my key reasons for getting a DSLR rather than replacing my
stolen FZ50 was low light performance. The following weekend, I
determined that the kit lens just simply was not fast enough. Cutting
to the chase, the next week I spent more than I had on my camera and
kit lens on an FA 31 limited.

The past year has been a pretty typical one of spending stupid amounts
of money on toys. A few very nice lenses, and quite a few inexpensive
used ones. My latest gear acquisition is a katzeye focusing screen
which to someone who grew up with manual focus, is like growning an
arm back. When I'm not exhibiting fiscal irresponsibility, I'm working
on the theory that the best way to learn from your mistakes is to make
sure that you make a lot of them. So, I've been shooting a lot of
photos, basically whenever I can find a few minutes to play with my
camera, and 40,000 frames later probably have almost a dozen that I
don't need to ashamed of.

I've been posting pictures on my flickr account:
http://flickr.com/ellarsee

Since I do a lot of blues dancing ( http://fridaynightblues.com ) and
nobody else has much luck shooting dancers in the ridiculously low
light environment, I've been working on that, experimenting with both
IR flash with my K100 and an FZ20 I had converted to IR.

I tend to keep my 18-250 on the camera as my "Ready for anything
lens", but when I can I prefer to shoot with a prime. I'm currently
toying with getting a DA40 to see how close to a "carry in a coat
pocket" sized camera I can get. I've also toyed with the idea of the
43 or the 21, but while the 40 is just over my threshold of financial
pain, the other two are quite a bit over.

I was wondering if anyone in the San Jose/Santa Cruz/Bay Area had any
of those lenses and would be interested in getting together so I could
try them out before spending money on one.

Another Pentax related question is that I have a friend who lives in
Sacramento who is very interested in the K2000, but who would much
rather try one out before buying it. Does anyone know of any stores
in her area where she could check one out?

  Larry

when I travel on business, my wife's iBook 667MHz bought used many
years ago, an iBook G4 1GHz I just bought used on eBay, my wife's
MacBook we bought last summer to replace the iBook, and a MacBook
Pro which is my main work machine. (Plus an old Snow iMac CRT and a
2-year old iMac LCD.)

When I got the new used iBook G4 it had minimal memory and smallish
hard drive. So I upgraded both. BTW, the iBook is a real project to
disassemble and reassemble, but after four times I got it right. In
the process of researching the memory and drive upgrades, I came
across a note about the power adapter.

The office Powerbook G4 is going back to the office for recycling,
the older iBook and my Powerbook G4 go to eBay soon. You know the
nice little box-shaped power adapter with built in "cord
management"? It turns out that there are at least four different
models that all look identical. Not counting the newer mag-safe
versions. I have used them all interchangeably, and dumped unused
ones in a drawer. So I spent several hours last night trying to
figure out which model went with which laptop so that I could
provide the Original adapter with each laptop when I sell them on
eBay or turn the one into the office. I am not sure it matters. but
it does seem that there was probably a reason why some came with a
65W vs. a 45W version. Now that I have that more or less figured
out, it is on to the question of which system discs came with which
machine...

If it were warmer I would be out taking pictures instead. Or maybe I

Most cats do. There's a special sort of noise that cats make when
they are watching birds just outside the window - a kind of click
or chirrup. I don't know why they do that, but it's a noise that
I have come to know well.

A rhyme from the world of advertising goes:

If the client moans and sighs
Make his logo twice the size.
If he still should prove refractory
Show a picture of the factory.
Only in the direst cases
Should you show the clients' faces.

If we count the caryard as his factory, and equate frequent repetition of
his name with increasing his logo's size, then I reckon this video ticks all
the boxes. Typical of local businesses, really.

The video is good with me, Cotty (WinXP and Google Chrome). I thought the
stuttering was at my end, but a frame that small should stream smoothly on
my standard ADSL connection so I guess its your server as others have

  Larry

Anyone checked web.archive.org to see if the original site/link was

Some of the power adapters are not interchangeable. I had several as
well and found that while one would run an i-book of different
vintage, it wouldn't charge the battery. So some caution is a good

Yep - at 17" and roughly 10lbs with battery, svelte it ain't!

I've been eyeballing one of those used Fujitsu P1120's on fleaBay.
Usually available for WELL under $200, with a touchscreen and a 40GB
drive, they look nice for a netbook-type small lappie for surfing and
carrying with you ultra-portable.

Mebbe one day...

HP has that TX2500z series notebook/tablet - gonna get one later this
year for my wife for school. It's the style that the notebook LCD panel
lifts up, rotates 180 degrees, then flips back down for use as a tablet,
but can still be used as a notebook.

There's going to be a whole new generation of CPU's coming out from
Intel and AMD by Q2 and Q3, including even quad-core mobile CPU's.
Should be an interesting year in the mobile computing sector.

These are the 17" Gateway P-FX series, as long as you can handle a
17"-sized notebook, it is a pretty good deal. Comes with a T5550
1.86gHz
cpu, 4Gb RAM, 320GB hard disk, bluetooth, eSata, SD/MMC/MS/xD slot,
802.11g

WiFi, HDMI output, 1440x900 LCD, and to top it all off, has an Nvidia
GeForce 8800M GTS 512MB video card, which is OUTSTANDING speed and
power in

a lappie. CPU can (and has been) upgraded by other up the the Extreme
X7800/X7900/X9000 which are about the most powerful Core2Duo-class
CPU's

around.

When Best Buy sold these new, they were $1599 or so in the store, and
these are nearly half-price as refurbs. Mine has been going strong for
almost 5 months, no issues. you can get an extended warranty at
squaretrade.com if refurbs make you nervous, for around $100-150 for 1
additional year, or Tiger/CompUSA might even offer one.

It also has the capability to hold a SECOND hard disk internally,
which I

added to mine.

Just a suggestion, as I have no connection with Tiger Direct,
CompUSA, nor
Gateway, other than having bought one of these, and loving the heck
out of

it. If you have a Microsoft live.com cashback account, navigate through
search.live.com/cashback to the laptop at tigerdriect.com and that
gets you

another 5% off - I purchased mine with 10% cashback back in September.

There's more info available at notebookreviews.com forums, which is
how I
originally foudn out. Search there for "P-6860FX" and you'll find
out info
on the lappie, and what upgrades folks have done, even up to
swapping out

the LCD panel for 1920x1200 panels.

If anyone is interested and wants more info, or detailed pictures of
mine,
feel free to let me know. The neat thing, is that most of the
components
(RAM, WiFi, CPU, HDD's) are EASILY swappable via compartments on the
bottom
- laptop disassembly is NOT required - simple screw-in trap doors,
including

the CPU!

I watched a cousin of mine exchanging harsh words with another driver
about parking spots, in german... looks a nice language for that kind of
situation. Now telling her of your love is far from my idea of romantic
speech... EEERCKLLEEBBEDEEERCK! One may get injured in the process... ;-)

Ok, this is not meant to offend anyone. We can't help but notice the
strange sounds of some languages - I had such hard time with some sounds
in french I simply gave up the language in school, sticking to english.
Wich BTW is completely different from portuguese, while french and
spanish share with portuguese a closer relationship. As a child I
watched my parents learning german, and quite simply couldn't articulate
the sounds. Guess that's just my fault, as german children speak german
quite easily, even from young ages...

That's very possible. I thought the colour change was a "tide line" from
the dampness falling down to ground level, but some pinning would be
prudent. You'll notice that this work, as well as other tall intricate
works, is under a canopy. They were being occasionally sprayed with a mist
of water. Sculptures with lower relief were outside beneath the sun and

Sand at Palm Beach is finer and softer than most other Sydney beaches, so
with some damping and packing tight it would set very hard. To make a
sculpture like the elephants they would probably build up an oversized hard
packed block in advance and carve out the shapes as if from stone, not try
to build it up from ground level like a clay sculpture. I've seen a
documentary of a commercial sand sculptor in the USA who precast his sand in
highly compressed blocks with a little cement in the mix, so that they'd
last for months. However these were just sand.

These are the 17" Gateway P-FX series, as long as you can handle a
17"-sized notebook, it is a pretty good deal. Comes with a T5550 1.86gHz
cpu, 4Gb RAM, 320GB hard disk, bluetooth, eSata, SD/MMC/MS/xD slot, 802.11g
WiFi, HDMI output, 1440x900 LCD, and to top it all off, has an Nvidia
GeForce 8800M GTS 512MB video card, which is OUTSTANDING speed and power in
a lappie. CPU can (and has been) upgraded by other up the the Extreme
X7800/X7900/X9000 which are about the most powerful Core2Duo-class CPU's

It also has the capability to hold a SECOND hard disk internally, which I
added to mine.

Just a suggestion, as I have no connection with Tiger Direct, CompUSA, nor
Gateway, other than having bought one of these, and loving the heck out of
it. If you have a Microsoft live.com cashback account, navigate through
search.live.com/cashback to the laptop at tigerdriect.com and that gets you
another 5% off - I purchased mine with 10% cashback back in September.

There's more info available at notebookreviews.com forums, which is how I
originally foudn out. Search there for "P-6860FX" and you'll find out info
on the lappie, and what upgrades folks have done, even up to swapping out
the LCD panel for 1920x1200 panels.

If anyone is interested and wants more info, or detailed pictures of mine,
feel free to let me know. The neat thing, is that most of the components
(RAM, WiFi, CPU, HDD's) are EASILY swappable via compartments on the bottom
- laptop disassembly is NOT required - simple screw-in trap doors, including
the CPU!

John, I can't say they're original - in Brasil you may drive racing cars
as long as they conform to legislation, and probably in Uruguai the same
happens. So assuming this was a racing car originally some add-ons were
probably necessary.

These guys pay such attention to details I wouldn't believe any changes
would be made unless really necessary, and even then would be as close
to the original plan as possible. That particular car attracted a lot of
attention.

Other cars presented had less interesting colors, or were parked in
partial shade, or had abusive backgrounds. This and the Lotus were just
too good.

Sadly I was using the Hasselblad with the 645 back, and had less film to
use... still, I can't complain. Those 645 slides strained some necks
around here... ;-)

Re: OT:Laptop Recommendation

2009-01-28 Thread tonym
yeah - I thought so too - but it really is a wicked laptop. I have no
connection with ANY of the mentioned places - just recommending something that
I actually purchased, and am happy with.

About the time I got mine, they would have a couple hundred available, about
once a month-or-two, and they would sell out QUICK. 6 months later, most that
wanted them, have already gotten them, but it is a nasty-wicked-fast laptop, if
you're willing to overlook the 17" size.

I wanted a 15.4" system, and ordered one from Costco.com which was lost (then
found later) and when they refunded that one, and this 17" became available (I
paid $699 - 10% cashback) I would've been dumb not to order it. It was a heck
of alot of computing power in a portable package for $630 or so. My other
choice was a Gateway M-6864FX from best Buy, which is a 15.4" with same T5550,
same 4GB, no bluetooth, 250GB HDD, and was $750. I actually bought one, and put
it aside to make sure no better deals came along within the 14-day return
period (I left it sealed) and then the 17" refurb showed up at tigerdirect.com,
and in discussions on notebookreview.com with other owners of it, I was
convinced to buy it, and return the 15.4" unit.

It's sheer size is unwieldy if you need extreme portability, like a 14.1" or
15.4" lappie, but bang-for-the-buck, it's nearly unbeatable! Unless you can
find the later P-7811FX on clearance (since replaced) at a best Buy, but that
later model, some S/N sequences had overheating issues, which none of the
earlier models had.

I had a family member offer to buy it, $100 more than I paid, and my kids
almost wanted to lynch me! They use it to play on steam, as it's video is
faster than anything else in the house by a long shot! :)

It has Vista Home Premium 64-bit installed, and with the external HDMI, I use
my 42" plasma as a second screen, and use dual-screen in Lightroom to have the
actual photos show up on the plasma, and the LR controls on the laptop LCD.
Works pretty good, although I'd love to be able to buy a 2nd LCD to use with
it!

Wife hasn't approved of THAT yet, as I'm still paying off the K20D on the
credit card :)
And now my LBA isn't helping any, either!

As an aside, on my Tuesday night photography class, I am the ONLY Pentax owner!
There's like 15 Nikon owners (from D40 to 2 D300 owners) and about 10 Canon
owners. No Sony or Olympus owners present.

Feels lonely out in left field :)
But I know what I have, and am plenty happy with my K20D.

Right here - Fortaleza, Northeast Brasil. That photo was taken from my
office's window, thanks to a "knee" or a slight deviation on the street.
That church is Fortaleza's Cathedral, a rather ordinary building in
plain light. I had the idea of using some building or tree as foreground
to a sunset photo. After some search, I noticed the alignment of the
towers and started the wait. From my office - or any point in that line
that would show the tower openings - the sun passes behind the church at
full speed, almost at the central point of its arch.

OT:Laptop Recommendation

2009-01-28 Thread tonym
I just saw these became available again, and I can recommend it, as I purchased
one in September.

http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4090488&CatId=17

These are the 17" Gateway P-FX series, as long as you can handle a 17"-sized
notebook, it is a pretty good deal. Comes with a T5550 1.86gHz cpu, 4Gb RAM,
320GB hard disk, bluetooth, eSata, SD/MMC/MS/xD slot, 802.11g WiFi, HDMI
output, 1440x900 LCD, and to top it all off, has an Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTS
512MB video card, which is OUTSTANDING speed and power in a lappie. CPU can
(and has been) upgraded by other up the the Extreme X7800/X7900/X9000 which are
about the most powerful Core2Duo-class CPU's around.

When Best Buy sold these new, they were $1599 or so in the store, and these are
nearly half-price as refurbs. Mine has been going strong for almost 5 months,
no issues. you can get an extended warranty at squaretrade.com if refurbs make
you nervous, for around $100-150 for 1 additional year, or Tiger/CompUSA might
even offer one.

It also has the capability to hold a SECOND hard disk internally, which I added
to mine.

Just a suggestion, as I have no connection with Tiger Direct, CompUSA, nor
Gateway, other than having bought one of these, and loving the heck out of it.

Search there for "P-6860FX" and you'll find out info on
the lappie, and what upgrades folks have done, even up to swapping out the LCD
panel for 1920x1200 panels.

If anyone is interested and wants more info, or detailed pictures of mine, feel
free to let me know. The neat thing, is that most of the components (RAM, WiFi,
CPU, HDD's) are EASILY swappable via compartments on the bottom - laptop
disassembly is NOT required - simple screw-in trap doors, including the CPU!

Given the different color of the sand in those items, I'd guess they

Just a guess.

Works fine re XP professional. However, resolution is pretty low when going
to full screen.

Re video production: think it could be a bit shorter, think the name James

bit too many -- I got annoyed enough hearing it over and over that I ended up
not wanting to listen to the end -- if it hadn't been you I wouldn't have

Other than that, not bad. Not bad at all.

Hard to get something different. Also when I was on the hill, there were
more fences than normal (they fence part of the hill I suppose to keep people

eroded away. But it meant it was harder than normal to keep fence out of
