On the other hand you could probably pick up a MZ-6/ZX-L or MZ/ZX-3/5/5n

Not surprising, especially given Kodak's inability to figure out how to
make money in the digital age, but saddening none the less. It is the
closest thing to an archival color photographic material. It would be
missed if anyone had a clue about how things work but no one does. Now
it's just a piece of history.

OT: As Blogs Are Censored, It's Kittens to the Rescue

2009-06-22 Thread Bob Sullivan
Part of the reason why I read this list is to put me in contact with
other folks around the world.
While I like the atmosphere of a friendly 'Pentax Pub', I do want to
hear about politics and religion on occasion. When my country is
doing stupid or silly things, I think that's fair game for a comment
or two. When my opinions show that I've got my head wedged up my
nether regions, I hope somebody will tell me. I don't want to start
big flame wars on politics or religion, but the article below makes
some excellent points with regard to the current election unrest in
Iran. You can censor new sources and you can censor focused efforts,
but you can't break up old, established internet friends. Be it
Rugby, or Kittens, or Photography, this is how information can get
out. I'd like to keep that going...

The Cute Cat Theory
http://www.ethanzuckerman.com/blog/2008/03/08/the-cute-cat-theory-talk-at-etech/

A talk that explains how to tell if your social-media tool is
working. [...] any sufficiently advanced read/write technology
will get used for two purposes: pornography and activism. Porn
is a weak test for the success of participatory media - it's
like tapping a mike and asking, 'Is it on?' If youâ're not
getting porn in your system, it doesn't work. Activism is a
stronger test - if activists are using your tools, it's a pretty
good indication that your tools are useful and usable.

Also mentions that when a goverment cuts off uninvolved folks'
supply of cute cat pictures in order to censor activism, the
uninvolved people finally get upset too. From March of last
year.

A Weak Willed man and his Pusher

2009-06-22 Thread William Robb

By now, I'm sure you already know where this is going.

In Friday, I got ome from work to find a message on my answering machine
that my local equipment retailer had a new toy for me to look at.
I was able to put it out of my mind over the weekend, thanks to working a
couple of very long days, but today started off as a day off.

It won't end that way, but I digress.

Anyway, the new toy was a 60-250, which I actually mounted to a camera and
tried out before I put my card on the counter.

They are saying they might have my K-7 in stock as early as 2 weeks from
now.

Damn.

It was my job to take photos of a
 really interesting light instalation
that took place in my city. the building in renovation was
 turned into
a low resolution lcd-like display which you could control
 via a
touch-sensitive board across the street. as you touched the
 board, the
lights and music would follow. quite a cool thing,
 actually, i was
lucky enough to try it :)

and here's the gallery of photos of it from the past two
 days:

in other news, i've put the first roll through my new

Currently my widest lenses are the 18-250 and the 18-55 kit lens
classic. My next widest is the FA 31.

What are the choices and expected cost for lenses significantly wider
than the 31, and faster and better than the 18-250, which aren't
horribly expensive? Either used or new.

Yes, I fantasize about the 12-24 and 16-50, but unless a miracle
happens, I don't see either one in my budget soon.

Currently my widest lenses are the 18-250 and the 18-55 kit lens
classic. My next widest is the FA 31.

What are the choices and expected cost for lenses significantly wider
than the 31, and faster and better than the 18-250, which aren't
horribly expensive? Either used or new.

The Pentax DA 16-45 is reported to be very good, as is the Sigma
10-20. YOu might possibly find the former used from someone who's
upgrading to the 16-50.

Or a souvenier.

For a while my T-shirts fell into two categories, those about
racing, those about dancing. Usually momentos of specific events. I
found that I preferred wearing my car related T-shirts to dance
events, and dance T-shirts to car events. That way I found people who
shared my unusual intersection of hobbies.

I've found that wearing xkcd ( http://xkcd.com ) T-shirts to dances is
a great way of finding which women are really cool, for particularly
geeky values of cool.

I don't have any photo related T-shirts yet, but wearing my camera
generally works to show my interest in photography. That, and taking
and posting pictures of various events. Though when you're as bad at
remembering names as I am, giving people another reason to know my
name leads for far more embarassing situations where they know my name
and I don't know theirs. On the other hand, taking pictures of people
that I'd like to know their name and posting them on facebook works
pretty well. Mutual friends tag their photos so, in theory, I can go
through my photos and see who is who.

OT: Bridge demolition in Minneapolis (video)

2009-06-22 Thread Charles Robinson

Non-Pentax, but some may find this to be fun nonetheless.

An old steel bridge was being imploded in Minneapolis on Sunday
morning. The public was told: There will be no place to view the
implosion due to the curve of the river and most of the shoreline
being private property.

We decided to go try anyways. We found a perfect viewing spot! I
took my Fuji F30 and braced myself against a tree.

The video cannot convey the impact of the sound when it reached us -
although you can see the image wobble left and right as the wall of
BOOM hits.

(In a wonderful coincidence, I believe this is a Shockwave video
file up on Facebook)

Re: Kodak retires Kodachrome

I'm kind of tired of Paul Simon whining. Kodachrome deserves a better
epitaph. Strangely as a product it still seems to sell for less and
cost less for processing than more recent film products. The fact that
Kodak can't seem to make a profit by leveraging some of the mystique,
(it's a special niche, almost boutique, product so it should be promoted
as one), is a sad comment on how far a marketing giant has fallen.
