Congratulations. I'm sure that you'll love that lens, it quickly
became one of my favorites. Frankly, unless I need the speed, or the
wider angle of view, I'll even grab it rather than my FA31.

I don't think I'm likely to be able to make it up to Northumbria,

I'm still up for a Northumberland visit, it's just a shame that I confused

Barging Pentax

2009-08-30 Thread Cotty
Well, funny how events turn. I'm going to a Dutch barge rally at Bisham
(near Marlow on the Thames) today and I'm doing a couple-page spread
feature on one of the barges/crews so will need some pics. The only
decent stills (!) camera we have left in the house is the lil old *ist
Ds and 18-55. I spent an hour last night re-adapting the K15mm 3.5 back
to K mount from EOS, so I now have several lenses to use including that
and the A*85 1.4 (both in stop-down mode as they have no aperture levers :)

I might even post a PESO .

Climate camp

2009-08-30 Thread Bob W
A climate camp has set up on Blackheath, a couple of miles from where I
live. This is where Wat Tyler's peasants' revolt came to a sticky end in
1381, and the Cornish Rebellion came to an end in 1497, so there are some
nice historical resonances and continuity with the tradition of protest.

I went up there yesterday evening to have a look. Here's one of my pictures;
I'll try and post a few more later today:

http://www.web-options.com/L1001029.jpg

It's quite interesting and seems to have the support of most of the locals,
who are mostly bourgeois liberals like me. The camp is right next to an army
barracks, where the police have set up a cherry-picker loaded with cameras
and videos overlooking the protesters. They are apparently photographing
everyone who visits, which is rather a waste of taxpayers' film if you ask
me.

Some of the news reports:

Well, funny how events turn. I'm going to a Dutch barge rally at Bisham

decent stills (!) camera we have left in the house is the lil old *ist

A climate camp has set up on Blackheath, a couple of miles from where I
live. This is where Wat Tyler's peasants' revolt came to a sticky end in
1381, and the Cornish Rebellion came to an end in 1497, so there are some
nice historical resonances and continuity with the tradition of protest.

I went up there yesterday evening to have a look. Here's one of my
pictures;

I'll try and post a few more later today:

http://www.web-options.com/L1001029.jpg

It's quite interesting and seems to have the support of most of the
locals,
who are mostly bourgeois liberals like me. The camp is right next to an
army

barracks, where the police have set up a cherry-picker loaded with cameras
and videos overlooking the protesters. They are apparently photographing
everyone who visits, which is rather a waste of taxpayers' film if you ask
me.

Thanks, Derby. "Loop". I was on the brown line, which starts on the

LOOPS around, and heads back to its starting point--Kimball & Lawrence

treat themselves to a ride on the Brown Line, especially the part about

We can photograph anything we want from a public place, with a relatively
small number of exceptions. This means, of course, that other people,
including the government and its agents, have the right to photograph me
when I'm in a public place. It would be hypocritical of me to object to
other people taking my picture when I'm in public, although the enormous use
of surveillance over here is a complete waste of effort and money. It
doesn't prevent crime, and is next to useless when it comes to getting
convictions.

It's not the photographing that's wrong, it's the apparent presumption that
protest is not a legitimate activity, and the further presumption that
anyone associating with protesters is guilty of something or other.

There is also the ridiculous use of stop & search powers by the police which
is often unjustifiably used against photographers. In the 80s these powers,
then called the Sus Law, were stopped because they were unfairly targeting
young black men and they eventually led to riots. But they're back with a
vengeance now, and unfairly targetting young black men again, as well as
people who look like they might be Muslims, or climate camp types. Or
photographers.

Decoder Ring, rightly lauded for their gorgeous Somersault soundtrack,
have gone back to an all-instrumental outfit. Not that "instrumental"
music quite accurately describes what they do. What an an epic set. All
three bands boundary-riding the post-rock paddock.

Oh, I'm sure the sense of irony at the BBC is alive and well.

Apparently, though, it's too subtle for the American public -
perhaps they need to add a few "Nudge, Nudge" or "laugh here"

Aha! The PDML flushes out another pervert! Like me... :-)

Welcome, Davy J, rocking school bus driver.

Last year, at the SF airport, while waiting in the lounge, some guy
was wearing an outlandish outfit. I was bored, so decided to make use
of his apparel. I chose the most attractive woman standing, a long
haired blonde model type, or perhaps a very young executive. Very nice
clothes and accessories.

Walked over to her and engaged her in conversation about this dude's
choice of clothes. She was responsive, and friendly, great smile,
green eyes. We talked for about 5 minutes about travel, photography,
her outfit, shoes, etc. As we talked, I noticed that 90% of the other
men in the room were looking at us. A fat old man wearing cargo shorts
and a T-shirt sporting a 4 day growth of grey beard, chatting it up
with a woman that few if any men would have the nuts to talk to. So we
talked about that as well. She remarked that she sees it all the time.
Everyone looking, no one approaching.

They announced the boarding of our flight. She smelled delightful as I
followed her on to the plane. And that was that. She sat in first
class with it's comfy wide leather seats, Joe over the wing on the
isle hoping that the center seat would remain empty.

Having worked with plenty of models and aspiring models in my most
active fashion and product shooting days in SF and Phoenix in the
early 70s, I know that these lovely creations are just like you or me.
Saddled with the social disability of being gorgeous, they have just
as hard a time relating as my type, and welcome interaction with
someone who is not out to take advantage. They are allowed to relax,
and I have my ego kicked up a notch. Symbiosis.

Re: Dome in the Mist

2009-08-30 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Christine.

This place has always fascinated me. It's in a rural area of Kauai,
on the road to Waimea Canyon. I've seen it before, but on this
occasion it looked very secretive, because of the mist and fog. Part
of the dome was in bright sunlight, and part was in the shade.

This is just inland of the Barking Sands Pacific Missile Range. The
"No Trespassing" sign on the road identifies it as a NASA facility,
but who knows what they track . . .

Did anyone see the program "How It's Made?" that I saw last night

manufactured? I did.

A digital keyboard is played and recorded digitally to an old
Macintosh, where is shows up as elongated dots and lines on a Mac

an analog file (didn't show how) and that is fed into an old Apple ]

So 32 years after it was introduced, an Apple ][ is still controlling

A buddy had to replace his canon ringlight because his old one
wouldn't work on his 5dII. I was going to try his old one on my gear.

Its a Canon Macro Ring lite ML-3

Plan A is to use a dumb hot shoe adapter on the shoe, or alternatively
some sort of optical trigger on the box for the ring light. But,
before I invested a bunch of time into messing around with it, I
thought I'd ask if anyone has played this game before.

I suspect that the most effective way Pentax could increase their

Re: PPG quota

2009-08-30 Thread AlunFoto
Rick,

You're not connecting via dialup or mobile 3G by any chance? I really
don't recognise your description...

I didn't join the foray until half a year after the first invitations
went out. I had read a lot of bitching from many on this list over the
interface, and was very skeptical to begin with. In fact, I wrote to
Pentax and suggested some improvements, both on the gallery display
and the voting page. A few were incorporated too, along with other
changes to improve the interface speed over time. I joined in June,
btw, and the beta stage ended in September 2007. Further improvements
were made later that autumn, and I don't think it's that bad anymore.
I may have grown used to it too, of course.

Last Thursday, btw, a colleague at work praised the site's convenient
interface for browsing images. Without any encouragement from me
except providing the link.

Re: using a canon ring light

2009-08-30 Thread Toine
Triggering the flash should be possible. controlling the light is the
real problem. It's usable If it has manual settings like 1/4 and 1/16
of full power. I used a small chinese ring flash (full power only) for
many years. The effect is allways the same: pitch black backgrounds.
I now use the new PTTL ringflash. Much better because now I can use
fill in flash from the ring.
