Well, after fighting with my ftp server all day, I have finally uploaded a
gallery of my very first K-7 shoot!

And so, here it is…

http://www.lovebytes.com.au/galleries/Mudri/

Remember this is a commercial shoot so there is like 157 shots in that gallery.
I don’t expect anyone to view all of them, but there are a few decent shots
amongst them that might warrant more than half a second look. ☺

Enjoy!

What i need is a kind of thing very much up to personal

satisfied with it. However it's a very low weight for the specs. I
suspect it will come with a rather large power supply and a rather

PESO Two Dogs, 1987 pano

Hi Team,

I thought I'd share a little pano that I recently discovered. The
source images were probably shot on my SuperA about 1987 as discrete
images but they were made to stitch. It's the Eden Wharf at Eden which
is close to the boarder of the states of NSW and Victoria on the east
coast of Aus. I hadn't really noticed what was in the shots until I
made the pano, gave me a chuckle at least.

I wouldn't trust Sony to not have a clause on the 400 page EULA that gives

It depends on what you need it to do. :-)

Due to its weight, - it could be great as a paper weight, but
depending on the build quality, it may not be suitable as a hammer. :-)

E.g. I have different requirements for a laptop - it should be very mobile
(as in light and small) while being able to do reasonable work
(heavy-PS is not required, but light PS work is needed, and many
applications need to be open at the same time).

Re: laptops again...

2010-02-08 Thread Igor Roshchin

Paul, I suspect you are talking about BlueTooth, not Blue-Ray
(which is a media/storage solution). .. or you are from a different
planet that already has blue-ray in the their ears. :-)

I understand people who avoid certain brands because of the
manufacturer's reputation (for whatever reason). I have some brands
here and there that I am trying to avoid, - but not many.

OTOH, the only Sony product besides media (tapes and floppies)
that I've owned was Clie (Palm Pilot clone).
IMHO, Sony is overpriced for their quality. People pay for the brand
name that I personally do not value much. The innovative value of Sony
is also much more limited (as opposed to the frequent perception).
In my opinion, Sony was good with their Trinitron technology, and they
they contributed to making small tape players (walkman) ubiquitous.
(But even then, other companies' products were of a better quality, -
e.g. Aiwa's tape players.)
I cannot think of anything else significant.

As for the evilness of Sony, - they bought Aiwa that had products that
were superior to Sony's, and essentially killed it.
(I've heard somebody saying that Aiwa was in stagnation before it was
bought, but I don't know if that's true or not.)
In any case, - I liked Aiwa: it had one of the best
technology of making very great quality sound in a small volume:
small speakers, headphones, etc, - all at a very moderate price.
Aiwa x815 headphones ($40-45 at the time) purchased in ~1995
were comparable in quality to Sennheiser HD-280 Pro and Sony MDR-V6
($80-100),

From a US perspective the price would be a little high.
But that machine should be capable of just about anything.

We've just bought an HP for home use, but which has more
than enough power to run Photoshop. Our configuration is:

o Core 2 Duo processors (you definitely win here)

 o 4GB RAM

 o 640GB (2x320GB)

o CD/DVD optical drive Blu-Ray would be nice, but
it adds a lot to the price.

o 17.3 1600x900 screenYour extra pixels are good

Not quite as good as yours, but we only paid $850 US.
That's around $1K AUD.

I don't know how much GST would add to that.

Unless you have the two monitors side by side, it's difficult to tell if one is
brighter than the other.
There are normally brightness (and other screen appearance altering) adjustment
buttons somewhere along the base frame of the monitor.
..But I suspect you knew that. I'm a certifiable buttinski.

There's nothing quite like taking off from a 3000 foot strip on a hot
mid-afternoon in high summer at 6000 feet ASL in an aircraft
significantly larger than the one you crashed in on takeoff from the
same small strip 3 hours before due to running out of runway.

Luckily for me, the small aircraft was a Piper Apache (chronically
underpowered) and the large a DHC-5 Buffalo (which has extreme STOL
performance)

She had asked a friend to take pictures but was happy to have me play
with my camera also. When we were setting up before the show I was
amused to note that Dave, the other photographer, was shooting with a
K10D.

It'll be interesting to see how his shots turn out. He seemed to be
shooting from the back of the room with a sigma 30/1.4 and I was up
at the front, mostly with the 50/1.4, 77 and my m135/2.5, though I
did end up putting the 31 on later in the evening.

David posted his shots on flickr here:

I did a bit more culling and processing and posted my shots here:

aka

His shots show a lot more of the room/party mine are a lot more the

I so much prefer yours, Larry. His long shots just aren't involving for
me. Yours feel much more dynamic

How have I managed to miss so many of these? That's a superb sequence of
photos. It's like an American version of the stuff that Luka posts, and you
know how I rave about his work. That's a fantastic portrait of America, and
fascinating. A great example of how to put together a photo essay. Some of
the pictures are individually superb, and supported brilliantly by others
which wouldn't stand alone quite so well.

Graham Greene said that the most difficult part of writing was the bits that

I'm going to take a contrary view and say I don't think it's creepy.
It's clearly a doll's hand, and it's under the snow. Some poor kid
lost it.

Were it near a disaster, accident, fire or crime scene it would be
very sad, but without knowing anything of the surroundings, it's just
a bit sad.

I think I'd like it a lot more if it were rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise.

I think it's a good photo.

Hi Jack,

I'm certainly not here to say that you're wrong, you're only saying
what feels right for you, and that's always valid.

However, I have to say, the two things that you commented on are
exactly the details that I like about the photo! ;-)

I purposely focused on the white star, with the resultant sharpness
and detail in the laces. The more I looked at it the more I liked it.
The OOF toes and heels of the shoes seem to emphasize their age and
state of decay to my eyes.

And that lace going out of the frame on the right works for me, though
I can't say why. just gives a certain flow to the photo, I guess.

I certainly appreciate your comments, and this post is not a
counter-critique, rather an explanation as to why I like the photo
despite those characteristics that (with some validity) bothered you a
bit.

Thanks!

RE: laptops again...

2010-02-08 Thread John Coyle
Hi Tanja - I wouldn't go near a Sony Vaio, a friend of mine had one which was
absolutely terrible to work with, and unreliable.
I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite Pro S300 for A$1300 with which I am very
satisfied. I installed Elements on it and have used it for processing images
quite happily. Vista Business, Intel Core2Duo P8400 chip @ 2.26GHz, 2GB RAM,
150GB Hitachi HDD. That may look under-spec'd by comparison with your latest
option, but it works very well, and might be worth looking at something similar.
If you want to, pop down and have a look...

What do you guys think of this? I have seen the stats about Sony vs Asus, vs
HP vs Dell, etc and it seems to come out near the top wrt stability and overall
failures, so thought that this new model Vaio looks pretty good, AND I can
afford it too, which is always nice!

Thoughts and advice?

Tan. ?

Excellent, I would say that 8, 11, and 19 are my favorites. But
there's a lot to like here. The poetry of daily life in pictures. Well
done.

EFFECT.

* PRECIPITATION TYPE...SNOW.

* ACCUMULATIONS...10 TO 20 INCHES.

A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE
EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. THE COMBINATION OF SNOW AND STRONG WINDS
WILL MAKE TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS.

Send the St. Bernards.

Lucky you! My wife gave me a toboggan for my 54th birthday and there
isn't enough snow here in Nova Scotia to try it out! :-o

Paris Match fakes win prize

2010-02-08 Thread Bob W
This is a good story which a lot of people might find interesting. Forgive
me if it's old hat, but I hadn't heard of it before Saturday, when it was a
topic of lengthy discussion in the French class I'm taking.

In short, some journalism students entered a faked story into a contest run
by Paris Match, and won. Then they revealed that their entry was a protest.

Quite interesting in the light of the disqualification of this year's
Wildlife Photographer of the Year winner.

One last shot from our very small
snowfall from a week or two ago.
We're supposed to get a couple of inches mid-week - nothing
 like what
they're calling for on the East Coast (again, poor

Probably won't be online for a day or two, so this will be
 the last

 Hope you enjoy.  Comments welcome.
