These two cameras look very desirable - surely Pentax is working on

One interesting thing is the alpha symbol on the face of the cameras -

ROFLMAO that is excellent... kinda reminds me of the prank terms used
on trainees/newbies in Germany who are asked to get certain items from
another department or from a shop somewhere such as:
- for construction jobs: "Siemens Lufthaken" a special air hook to
hold things (in the air of course),
- for mechanics: "Kolbenrückholfeder" the piston retractor spring/coil
needed in one cylinder engines,
- for nurses and doctor's assistants: "Rahmen für das Blutbild" a pun
on "bild" meaning picture/image: the frame for the blood count,
- for surgical nurses: "Rückenmarksverlängerer" the spinal cord
extension/extender,
and of course noone knows what they're talking about or they get sent
elsewhere or pranked some more...

I wonder if there are equivalents to that in other countries - your turn now!

Re: Lightroom workflow Q

2010-05-11 Thread Alastair Robertson
Cory, I am sure that Tim's and Godfrey's approaches would do an
admirable job at keeping two catalogs in synch, but to acheive the
first part of your request to have lightroom remember develop
settings, and keywords etc, shoot or convert into DNG files -
lightroom then writes the metadata into the file itself so when you
import it brings these settings with the images. Alternately, if you
shoot in jpg or pef, you can write sidecar files and they get imported
along with the image - just make sure you "save metadata to files"
prior to import, or have lightroom do it automatically by setting this
in your preferences.

The trick with this approach is for keywords to use a consistent set
and hierarchy. You can either remember these, or better still export
the keywords from the master and import into the clone so they are
there ready for use when you come to keyword a new shoot. You apply
the keywords in your macbook and when they come into your desktop they
will match your existing ones or add any new ones.

As for the collections - I don't think these are stored in the
metadata so you may need to do manual assignment to collections when
you get the images into the desktop

Re: Augenblick: Some shots and a controversial opinion

2010-05-11 Thread Tom C
Tim,

Thanks for the post of gallery shots. Fun to relive the moment.

Of the three I submitted, the one I personally felt most likely to
succeed as a piece of art, was neither in the book or gallery. Based
on past experience, I wasn't really too surprised though.

What does that say to me?

I more or less submitted (on relatively short notice) what I
considered possibly my three best shots of '09 (or more accurately
the three I felt most likely to succeed).

As photographer I simply supplied the raw material. The book
compilers and curator(s) did the selection of material.

There were some images hung that were not my favorites either. However
being essentially a non-themed gallery, I suspect the curator was 1)
subjective as we all are, and 2) attempting to be objective so that
images chosen for display would appeal to a wide spectrum of the
general public.

I remember "Rowboats, Padstow" which was outstanding and "Tree in
Field" without even looking at the book again. Both outstanding
photos and worthy of high praise, IMO. Maybe they just failed to
speak to Sue as much as others, or it could be she was attempting to
display a wide variety of subject matter, in a limited space.

In any case, I'm positive the curator cannot please all people (put
ourselves in her spot).

Irrespective of my own personal taste and predilections, the book and
gallery had a majority of shots that appealed me. Some shots that did
not appeal to me at first, grew on me as time passed - to my surprise.

I'm not saying anything you didn't already know, just blathering.

Tom C.

Chigago, This Time with Pictures

2010-05-11 Thread William Robb

Second attempt.

A week or so before leaving for this trip, I borrowed a little point and
shoot from a friend, with the intention of traveling light.
A little Panasonic with a Leica lens.
The name "Leica" sold me for obvious reasons.
I don't know anything about it other than how to run it on something called
"Intelligent Automatic" and manual.
And it's lens is a 24-60/2.0 equivalent.
I presume equivalent to a lens on a 35mm camera.
I don't know, but it seemed fairly wide angle.
It's lens is also quite good.
But this isn't a camera review, this is a total fuck up by someone who
drinks too much.
But, as always, I digress.

Doug, you really should have come for pizza on Saturday.
If we do this again, we should probably arrange our hotels to be closer.
I hope we do this again.

It's funny, the things that we do, and the things that happen. On Saturday,
Tom and I hooked up with Stan, and we did somewhat of a tourist gig at the
Bean, a large chrome thing.
By good fortune, this coincided with a Scottish Pipe Band playing Scotland
the Brave passingly well.

I believe I mentioned at the time the existence of my family's pipe band.
This is them:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GY-2MxMn2c&feature=related

OK, we'll see how many have been scared off by the bagpipes.

And on to the things that happen.
Last year at about this time, I was playing tug with my dog. At some point,
he hit my knee with his body and bent it sideways.
I am now somewhat lame.
On several levels, I am sure, but in this case, I can only stand up for so
long before I need to find a place to sit.
But as always, I digress yet again.

Oh yes, I was hanging out with Tom and Stan.
And my knee said screw you, I am now going to torment you until you cry like
a girl.
And so we found a little coffee shop and Stan, Tom and I talked about many
things.
Stan, it turns out, is a lover of Great Danes, and at one time was thinking
about breeding

them.
And so we talked about dogs for a while.
And Stan told us about a fellow that turns entire towns into his studio.
Which had nothing to do with dogs, but that isn't important.
None of this is.
And then we went off again into the rather chilly Chicago afternoon.
Eventually wandering away, Stan going off to do whatever he was off to, Tom
and I wandered back to the art gallery where we carefully avoided Eggleston,
in favour of old Chinese Pottery and Renaissance Italian painters.
I should have stuck with the Eggleston. All that happened was my knee
started to hurt again and the only place to sit was outside that gallery.

OK, now we'll see how many have been scared off by my long winded
writing

As the subject line says, there are pictures. Fifty three of them, in fact.

http://users.accesscomm.ca/wrobb/pictures/gesos/chicago/index.html

Next time I come to Chicago, I'll bring a real camera and some lenses.

In the majority of cases, it was because the photographer chose not to
participate in the gallery exhibit. And we couldn't force 'em ;-)
And most of the people who didn't want to be in the gallery show were
overseas and probably couldn't justify spending the money for
printing, framing and return shipping to be in a gallery they would
never see.

PESO: Blurry or Clear?

2010-05-11 Thread Charles Robinson
I was at a concert this weekend, and came up with (among other things) a pair
of photos I couldn't decide between, so I included them both in the gallery.

I usually only like photos which I can describe as being "reasonably sharp".
Now, when shooting low-light high-movement subjects such as a rock concert,
that's sometimes an unachievable goal. Nonetheless, this is the first blurry
shot I've taken which I actually like.

So, I'm sorta curious: which do you prefer? The first blurry shot, or the
moderately-clear shot taken 5 seconds later?

shave it's charms but the second is just a stronger image.

I find it entirely acceptable at 800/1100 ISO for concert photography.

PESO: Pennington Barn II & III

I recently posted a quicky of this barn, but conditions improved (the Earth did
some further tilting) and this AM I noticed the sun is now hitting its front.
Also, dying weeds are now more suited to the scene.
I'd have allowed a bit more of the sky had it had more to offer.

There's not much you can really do other than help organize and/or
participate in a community clean up efforts. You'll never completely
stop the inconsiderate assholes of the world from trashing the place.

But instead of just posting a sign, help keep the area under
surveillance and DO report such "misdeeds" ...

From: Tom C

That sucks. But may I ask non-judgementally, is there something you
can do to ameliorate the problem? I'm afraid we're more or less stuck
with a segment of society who neither respect other people or the
planet. If it were me, I might clean up the the mess and post a small,
rather inconspicuous sign to the effect that the area is under
surveillance and misdeeds will be reported to the appropriate
authorities.

If that doesn't work I'd sick Doug Brewer and William Robb on them.

Charles,

I also like the original aspect ratio in my photos, - so when
I crop, - I usually keep that.
The main exception is a square crop.
I found that is gives some sort of "impact power" to some photos.

See, e.g.

Not sure if this has been posted.

These two cameras look very desirable - surely Pentax is working on
something similar?

One interesting thing is the alpha symbol on the face of the cameras -
does this mean they use the standard alpha lens mount?

I think not. Lens mount is described as Sony "E-series", and Sony Alpha
DSLR lens mount is described as Sony "α" (alpha symbol) lens mount.

They both have strong points, but i prefer the B&W a bit more. The
light in the colour shot looks very nice and the shadows work well,
but it seems to have a blue cast to it.

The B&W looks sharper and more "old"

That "unusual" color you see may be a touch of blue as a result of my
attempting to get a hint of color in the sky.(?)
I'm going to rework it for my file.

When I've looked at my own photos of older buildings, it's normally an easy
choice as to which is best. I think this is a tough call. For an atmospheric
shot it has to be B&W, but recoding what is there in 2010 swings me to
colour. Either way, it is an interesting scene.

The other thing I forgot to add is about the nature of a B&W photograph.
Here we are with all the modern technology of colour, multi-frame shots and
video - and yet a good B&W picture, to my mind, still has as much relevance
today as it did 'x' decades ago.

Great pictures one and all.

The picture of the fire truck with a pristine stuffed toy mounted on the
radiator grill was a surprise. Over here, the only stuffed toys you see
mounted on trucks are usually moth-eaten and filthy teddy bears attached in
a similar fashion to local refuse trucks. I would have thought in some parts
of the US and Canada, the real threat would be of having a real one imbedded
in the front of your vehicle at any time.

The second shot is great. The first, not so much.

Thanks Cotty, that was a treat to watch. You seem to have a knack for
this, maybe you could go pro.

Now I regret not having mooned the camera as I first planned...

Jay, you're a lot taller than you sound on the internet.

Christine, on the other hand, is a lot shorter.

Yes! It's a little befuddling, but I've forever thought monochrome images
(scenics especially) more comfortable to view. Less conflict, thus more
approachable.(?)

It's funny that this is (or WAS) my first blurry shot that I kinda liked, and
I'm absolutely the only person who thinks so ('cept for my twin brother).

So many other people get away with blurry action shots and I thought I'd
figured it out. I'll go back to my "sharpness is KEY" attitude now.

Thanks for the opinions, all.
