PESO: Basketball Reject

2010-07-27 Thread phil

I like to go to our local team's home games and of course I take my camera.

The fast action is difficult to foillow with the camera, even thouigh I
played the game for many years. But with much practice I think I am
starting to get the hang of photographing the games.

The Noise Ninja plugin in Bibble5 reduced the noise considerably

That's the sort of thing I'm afraid of. So far, so good, but I'll
keep an eye on it. Figures - we leave in ten days for vacation, and
this is my go-to walk-around lens. So, the CLA will probably have to
wait, unless something ugly happens in the meantime.

On the bright side, I'm quite happy I left my "nice" lens at home

Thanks Rob. I think the chrome caps on the end of the fenders are just
surrounds for the turn signals. A little fifties-style window dressing. While
Exner designed the body, Ghia built it. Under the skin, it's a shortened
Chrysler New Yorker, which was a reasonably nice chassis and powertrain for the
day. As far as I could tell, the restoration is flawless.

I guess that's the difference, anything that's pocketable must fit in
a regular cut jeans pocket for me and I don't often wear jackets, just
the occasional fleece. So for me even the S90 is on the boarder of
pocketable. The K-x fitted with my DA35 macro is my most luggable DSLR

Yes, other than the LCD, it seems to work fine.

I didn't run a full diagnostic series on it, mainly because I don't have one.

I've received a lot of comments with respect to that remark; people
really take it to heart! LOL. No, they're not in the same size class,
but the photo was "for illustration purposes only", as in "the E-PL1
is not a ginormous camera, as can be seen when compared to the tiny
S90. Or something like that :-)

During my time with the E-PL1 I carried it in my cargo pants pocket or
jacket pocket, especially with the 17mm f/2.8 pancake; I couldn't do
this with a K-x.

However, the truly go-anywhere camera in my arsenal is most definitely
the S90, and nobody's going to dethrone her anytime soon.

But this was what I was trying to say, really - the Vuescan DNG does not

They are RAW files in that they are a dump of the information read via
the scanner sensor, it just happens that the images contain
RGB(IR)/pixel not a Bayer mosaic, and from recollection the Bayer file
encapsulated in camera generated RAW files is generally also TIFF.

Back to the original question, I haven't used the configuration
mentioned but I did experiement with shooting film using my own high
performance macro lenses on the K20D and other bodies and none
produced results anywhere near as consistant and high quality as my
Minolta Elite 5400 II.

On Jul 27, 2010, at 1:16 PM, Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote:

I didn't think it was an argument, Boris. Just information.

Yes. And good information.

- Scanners which have IR-based dust and scratch reduction/removal
features can automate dust removal much more easily than DSLR capture
can, although the spotting tools in LR and the contextual-aware
cloning tools in PS CS5 go a long way to make it easier. It's a bit of
a toss up. Of course, the IR-based features don't work with non-C41
B&W films or Kodachrome 25 so well, if at all.

- I have not found capturing high quality images files from film with
a DSLR to be a significantly less time consuming process than
capturing with a high quality scanner. There's less time in the
capture process itself, of course, but more time spent preparing the
setup and focusing, and more time spent editing. The scanning capture
is tedious, for sure, and it seems that the DSLR gets through that
somewhat faster, but overall the total time required to get critical
quality work is pretty darn similar.

Paul :: it isn't clear whether you're referring to VueScan raw files
or VueScan's outputted DNG files. They're different. VueScan raw files
have extension .TIFF, where VueScan can create "raw" DNG files that
have extension .DNG.

I output from VueScan as DNG. I realize they're not really RAW in that
VueScan adjustments modify them. The technical part of it all is
beyond the limits of my knowledge.

The .DNG files it outputs are an encapsulation of TIFF RGB files and
are very editable in Camera Raw; they're not actually raw files at
all, simply a TIFF using the ability of DNG to encapsulate them and
provide more functionality. The raw .TIFF files are only editable in
Camera Raw if you have one of the latest versions of the Camera Raw
plugin and have the option to enable editing of TIFF files in Camera
Raw's preferences turned on.

I'm able to edit my DNG tagged Vuescan files in Camera Raw. In fact,
they automatically open in Camera Raw when I save them, so I must have
editing of TIFF turned on. I have the latest plug in for PSCS 4
installed.

Of course, being TIFFs, they are editable
in Lightroom or Photoshop without Camera Raw anyway.

I've done a lot of scanning since 1995 ... several thousand exposures
... with all kinds of workflows. I just recently finished doing proof
scans of my entire Minox film library, collating and annotating them
... over 1900 exposures. It's a chore. Nowadays, particularly for more
normal work in 35mm that needs scanning, I'm much happier if I have
more than a dozen frames to just send them to scancafe.com : they do
as good or better job as anyone and it saves me a lot of time and
effort. I concentrate my scanning efforts on unusual formats and
restoration work where I need total control of the process.

I have tens of thousands of negs I should scan, but the task is
overwhelming, so I doubt that I ever will. But once in a while I roam
through the negative files and pick out something interesting to scan.
It's fun seeing 35 year old photos that I never printed. . And I still
shoot with the Leica occasionally for grins. Should probably exercise
the 6x7 one of these days as well.

I don't think any scanners create bayer mosaic output data. Vuescan's
DNG files are DNG encapsulated TIFF, so they are RGB files inside a
DNG container that can be edited with raw processing tools, which

John,

If you're interested in what I have to say about the E-PL1, then
please take a look at parts 1 and 2 of my reviews:

http://enticingthelight.com/2010/03/30/review-olympus-pen-e-pl1-part-1-first-impressions/
http://enticingthelight.com/2010/04/07/review-olympus-pen-e-pl1-part-2-using-the-camera/

I've dragged my heels publishing part 3 (Image IQ) because, to make it
short, the E-PL1 produces the best JPEGs I've ever seen. By far. And
there's not much else to say. I swear Olympus engineers made a pact
with the devil in order to program that JPEG engine.

In view of this, I think this camera would be ideal for someone who
does not plan on tinkering with images in post processing (as I
imagine you wife wont do). If you ever borrow it from her (which I'm
sure you'd never do in a million years) you could always shoot RAW if

A VueScan raw file is different from a DSLR raw file. It's essentially
a linear gamma RGB TIFF file without VueScan's image processing
applied, and is designed specifically to allow multiple different
adjustment settings to be tried with VueScan without having to run the
media back through the scanner.

You can also write in DNG format these days, though, and feed the file

- Toralf

DSLR raw files have quite a bit more flexibility in terms of what you
can do with them. The negative side of DSLR capture is that you're
dependent upon the quality of the optics, how well you focus them, and
of course limited by whatever resolution the DSLR is capable of.

However, with today's 10-14 Mpixel DSLRs and a suitable setup, you can
achieve approximately the same image resolution as a 4000 ppi scanner
with better dmax from 35mm film.

sure. Fortunately, it was just the camera, I left my flash at home,
and the hotshoe looks clean. So did the pop-up flash. Went over the
whole thing with a soft brush, just to be sure.

Re: Slide copier for Pentax

2010-07-27 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I didn't think it was an argument, Boris. Just information.

Re: Adams Photos Found in Garage Sale

2010-07-27 Thread CheekyGeek
Considering that Ansel Adams is a business that is worth more now than
it ever was while he was alive, I foresee a potential problem for the
garage sale buyer, now that he has publicized his story (after 10
years of working to get it authenticated). Ansel's estate could argue
that since the negatives were never sold they were illegally removed
by someone and the current owner is thus in possession of stolen
property. I am not a lawyer, so I don't know how valid that argument
would be - but the estate could have deeper pockets than the artist
and at least perhaps throw a wrench in the works of any potential
sale.

It never occurred to me that Iawc is something that would get said enough to
need it's own acronym.

While they were at it, they also wanted shots of each other.

Jack,
I really lucked out on the lighting. I put up clear plastic over the dance
floor in my back yard to protect it from the rain, and it makes a fantastic
diffuser:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157624371211856/

I just had to move them around occasionally so inconvenient beams of light
wouldn't blow out the image. I was going to take the plastic down after the
rainy season, but it's too useful for photography.

Re: weatherproof vs sandproof?

Christine,
I've never gotten so involved with sand, only a little at a time.
I'd use a wet cloth and brush to remove all the loose sand I could.
I'd exercise all the switches on the body to make sure all the sand is out.
I don't think water or sand can make it past the doors on the body
like for the sd card.
The flash is going to be difficult to clean-up.
As for the Sigma lens, I have no experience.
It's pretty hard to keep sand out of lenses.
You'll have to patiently work your way thru it.

weatherproof vs sandproof?

2010-07-27 Thread Christine Nielsen
While I was in the water with my kids yesterday at the beach, a pack
of seagulls descended on our pile of gear in search of food. To bring
my camera to the beach, I had taken the foam camera bag insert from my
handbag, in which it usually resides, and placed it inside a plastic
grocery bag, tied shut, to keep the sand and water out. I placed that
whole mess inside our beach bag, safely nestled among the towels, etc.
There was no food in that bag. But that didn't stop those winged
varmints from looking! I think they have learned that plastic grocery
bags usually contain food (last week, I saw a gull fly off with a bag
of snacks from a family's stash), so when they found the one with my
camera, they pulled it out, dragged it across the sand, and opened it,
unceremoniously dumping out the contents. Imagine my horror upon
finding the business end of my lens half-submerged in sand, surrounded
by hundreds of webbed foot prints!

I did my best to carefully brush off the sand. It was everywhere.
The on/off switch was "sticky" at first, but that seems to have worked
itself out. Does the AF sound noisier than before? Am I imagining
that the shutter sounds clankier? Argh!!

So here's my question: now what do I do? Is it possible that tiny
grains of sand could get in there & gunk up the works? My camera -
the k7 - is "weatherproof". The lens - a sigma 17-70 -- makes no such
claim. I've removed the sd card, carefully inspecting and removing
with a brush any grains of sand around the door. I figure I should do
the same with the lens... but are there other steps I should be
taking?

OTOH, everything seems to be working, I had a UV filter on my lens...
and luckily - I'm guessing those gulls shoot Nikon.

Looks cold though, and I haven't seen snow ever where I live now.

I don't think it was *that* cold, as the picture was taken quite late in
the winter. But I rather like living in a place where we really have
different seasons. If those clouds we have right now go away any time
soon, I expect the same place will be crowded with people going for a
swim to cool down a bit, or trying to get a bit of a suntan...

How about a winter picture in the middle of summer?

Good work Larry but for anyone not knowing the people involved, one pic
is all you need. This one tells the story to me instantly:

61348 but I could do with more headroom on the lady, otherwise, that's
the shot.
