Re: Eneloops again and again

The newly recharged Eneloops from this msg last month gave up today
after warning me of low battery for 3 days. 18 days. That was their
first recharge, so I expect better next time around.

I replaced them with new fresh Energizers to establish a baseline, and
will see how long they last. IIRC it was also about 2 - 3 weeks. Level
is 100% now vs the 61% of the Eneloops when first installed. Keyboard
has dropped to 52% from 62% 18 days ago, but I never turn it off.

I'm sorry if I'm beginning to sound like Larry! :-)

Re: Eneloops again and again

2010-08-08 Thread paul stenquist
The energizers won't last as long. They're not designed to. But if you put both
in a flash and used it continuously until dead, you'd find the energizers (or
most any conventional Nimh battery) would recharge the flash faster and deliver
more flashes before dying than the eneloops. Leave the flash on your dresser,
and the eneloops will outlast the energizers by a wide margin.

don't know if you're already familiar with it, but you might enjoy the book
Winterreise by the Magnum photographer Luc Delahaye. It's a document of some
time he spent in Russia, and includes a wonderful sequence of blurry photos
shot from a moving train travelling through the taiga. I shot something
similar sitting in the open doorway of a 'personal' train travelling in
Northern Romania a few years ago, inspired by Delahaye.

Pentax has the manual on-line as a PDF file:

http://www.pentaximaging.com/files/manual/Mount_Adapter_K.pdf

It says there's spring you have to push in with the tip of a ball point
pen, then you just turn it counter-clockwise until it stops & it will
come out.

Re: ME-F united with AF lens

2010-08-08 Thread Bob Sullivan
No the fast 35-70/2.8 was only for the ME-F.
A smaller manual focus 35-70 f2.8 would be welcome, but never appeared.
I always hoped for such, but...
See Cotty and his Franken-lenses.
Perhaps you and a Dremel Motor tool can make some adjustments,
like taking off the box for the 4AA batteries on the lens.

Re: Pentax SMC FA 24-90 mini review with samples

2010-08-08 Thread Rick Womer
Lately the 24-90 has been spending more time on my camera than the 16-45 (whose
"long end" is just too short much of the time). It almost never left my PZ-1p.
On my digital bodies the focal length range is perfect for event shooting, in
particular.

If Pentax fixes its SDM problem, I will probably get a 17-70.

I like the last pic particularly.

Cheers,

Rick

It powers off by itself at a certain point. If you switch it back on
soon enough it will go right over to the other battery, if you give it
too much time, especially when it is warm outside you may find that
the empty battery has regenerated enough to trick the camera into
thinking it still has a few exposures left in it. First check on power
on is thus whether a good battery is present in the location specified
as first choice.

Yer welcome. An interrelated topic, of course, is what setting do you
have the camera set to recall when the power is cycled?

William Robb

I don't remember, but it would have been either P or Av, since I only use
those. Would it make a difference?

I'm embarrassingly vague on some of this stuff, but IIRC, the cameras can be
told to remember such things as ISO, WB, etc when the power is shut off, so
if you have an inexplicable settings change when a battery dies, this might
be why.

Any setting changed mechanically is remembered mechanically, such as
exposure mode, AF mode and field, SR, metering. All others are stored
in non-volatile memory even beyond a battery removal. I believe what
you're referring to, Bill, is the USER mode option which at any time
allows you to commit your current settings to memory such that they
can be invoked by setting the mode dial to USER.

>terminals on the XLR - 1 Chassis, 2 hot, 3 return.

Cory, thanks for the link - in fact it was wired like the page you sent:

But that was the config that didn't work.

I tried this config:

And it worked. Which is slightly strange, because I'm taking a stereo
signal and only listening to one side - but in fact it doesn't matter -
when I do a mixdown from Final Cut, the only thing that is stereo is the
music - everything else is mono, but obviously it is mixed onto 2 tracks
as the output from Final Cut is stereo.

So what I needed was an unbalanced cable. I put the tip from the TRS
jack through to the hot pin of the XLR, and then the ground to 1 and 3,
left the TRS ring going nowhere.

Question: if I attach *both* the tip and ring from the TRS to the hot
pin of the XLR (and leaving the TRS sleeve attached to pins 1 and 3 on
the XLR), will I hear both sides of the stereo? I should try it but I'm
knacked for today and I'm out the door at 6.30am

Thanks

Re: Eneloops again and again

2010-08-08 Thread eckinator
Dunno if thoser readings are indicative of anything at all, my
understanding is that some devices simply measure voltage and convert
to charge according to a proprietary formula - for example, I have two
LED helmet lamps, one a Chinese NiteFox unit, one a Petzl TacTikka XP+
and the Petzl runs several hours on full power with a set of 3 AAA
rechargeables discarded by the NiteFox as empty...

Battery meters run off a voltage reading for batteries not equipped
with electronics. Setting the voltage levels that correspond to
near-empty and empty is arbitrary and also depends on the draw of the
device. Since NiMH's and Lithium disposables have different maximum
voltages and discharge curves than the Alkaline AA's which most such
meter's are calibrated for there can be some extreme variation in
actual vs reported battery charge.

I replaced them with new fresh Energizers to establish a baseline, and

"long end" is just too short much of the time). It almost never left my PZ-1p.
On my digital bodies the focal length range is perfect for event shooting, in particular.

If Pentax fixes its SDM problem, I will probably get a 17-70.

Every time I'm tempted by this lens, I read about SDM problems and look
at something else. I'd also like to know if it's really weather sealed
as some have said or only has a gasket at the camera body...

I like the last pic particularly.

Cheers,

Rick

I think it was more a matter of building inexpensive lenses to satisfy what at
the time was a rather unsophisticated market for Pentax. But the buyers got a
lot of lens for their money. I had the 24-105/3.2-4.5 and found it very good.
Sold it only when I bought the DA* trio.

PESO -- The former "Rudy's"

2010-08-08 Thread P. J. Alling
Rudy's is a New Haven and Yale institution. It's been at the same
location for 75 year and has probably had more Yale students, cycle
through it's tap room than any other institution in the city. Not to
mention that it's open to everyone. The interior had an "It's been here
forever" feel that you just can't get most places. A few day's ago the
old Rudy's closed and reopened in a newer higher trafficked location.
It will lever be the same. Amazingly though the old location was
thriving just a few day's before it now looks like it's been abandoned
for years.

Is the exposure, perhaps, the result of being taken from a background shadow
or...? To avoid the dreaded "clipping", I often lock in a quick meter reading
taken from something slightly lighter than the main subject. When shooting
wildlife, however, one seldom has the chance to fiddle with various exposures.
It's something that must be anticipated and be a part of the preset.
I keep a -1/2 preset. I've heard of some doing such to speed up the shutter,
thereby, reducing noise grain. Seems any effect would be largely/wholly
imaginary.

what's more amazing is that the Mighty Mouse uses two AAs, where the

I think underexposure will do more to increase noise than would a longer
