It is but it isn't. I was thinking this morning that it felt very strange to
be getting back to normal after something like that. It feels as if something
is different... but I don't know what. Probably an emotional response, and I
guess that feeling will fade in due course.

We're still getting aftershocks but they've been very small. I've been
sleeping pretty well since Friday. I think it helped a lot to get out of the
house for the day. Now I just need to keep cabin fever at bay while I work
from home.

There is no update about the office situation as yet. The boss sent out an
email on Friday to arrange a staff meeting at a café in town... but I don't
work Fridays so I didn't find out until it was too late. I'd been looking
forward to catching up with my colleagues so I spent most of the day in a bad
mood.

I had a real estate agent knock on the door this afternoon asking if we were
thinking about selling. I think they might be struggling for a little while,
I'd only want to buy a cracked house if it was less cracked than mine!

GESO: Photographic Therapy

2010-09-13 Thread David Mann
You may remember last week I mentioned I'd gone outside to take some photos
when an aftershock just about sent me over the edge. It was timed just when I
was settling back into work after lunch. I was exhausted from lack of sleep,
I'd just about had it with my employer, and the project I was working on has
been a thorn in my side for the past few weeks. Plus I was alone at home and
the isolation was not doing me any good either.

So I went outside to the garden to try and clear my head. I saw our magnolia
tree in full flower and decided I wanted to take a couple of photos of it. So
I went inside to get the camera, and ended up spending a bit of quality time
with it.

http://www.multi.net.nz/therapy/

Taking these helped me relax, probably by distraction more than anything else.
All K10D and FA100/2.8 Macro, handheld.

I've done nothing to these apart from resizing. There are a couple more pics
that need a little processing but I had to take my Photoshop machine down to
make room for my work PC. So they'll have to wait.

I brought my Argus C3 to burning man on a lark. I thought that it would be
fun nostalgia to run a roll or two of film through.  I grabbed my probably
expired unshot rolls of film to shoot with.  I wasn't too worried about image
quality, it was more a case of just playing with an old toy that I hadn't
shot with in about 37 years.

By the time I'd get out of camp in the afternoon the weather was generally
windy and dusty enough that I didn't want to risk the DSLRs so I ended up
spending more time (at least during the day) shooting with the Argus than
with my Pentaxen. Arguably, I should have put my 50/1.4 on the K1000 body
that I brought along but I was having too much fun shooting with the Argus. I
also like to think that I was learning a lot, being forced to shoot at a much
slower pace where every step had to be done sequentially, and manually, to
the point that winding the film and cocking the shutter were different
 actions.

 For your amusement:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157624809385751/

I'm not going to claim that any of these met my goal of only taking excellent
shots, but if you cut some slack on technical details like sharpness, I think
I got a few good ones, but even more important I had a lot of fun taking
them. Shooting film again is also giving me a renewed appreciation of
shooting digital, where ISO 200 is considered slow, rather than moderately
 fast.

Had to stop after a while as flickr is still (to me) such a PIA to use.

That being said, fun stuff. I particularly liked

This is what astronomers do on ground and space-based telescopes. The
issue with cameras is that the dark frame needs to be the same
exposure length as the image you take; for your system to work one
would take a 1/2 hour exposure (say) and the camera would figure out
what the noise would be every (say) 30 secs, and would then use this
data to apply a DFS for exposures henceforth. Ideally, you would be
able to run a DFS Setup at any time and the camera would store these
values in memory. It would come with default values from factory, but
as the chip ages one would have to redo the setup periodically. Or if
you're a stickler for detail, you'd do it at the beginning of every
night you use the camera.

Or...Pentax could just make DFS optional so those who want to turn it
off and do DFS with software of the computer can do so, and those who
don't know what the hell DFS is (or don't care) will leave the camera
on the default DFS: ON.

For what it's worth, even a camera like the Panasonic G2 has the
option to turn DFS off, so there's no reason for Pentax not to
implement it.

Right. The particular DFS frame may depend on the outside temperature.
So yes, for perfect DFS, the procedure will have to be done every night.
But only once for the night.

If, however, while the shutter is open, the camera would be able to save
the DFS image every so many minutes or seconds, it could do it.

Right. The particular DFS frame may depend on the outside temperature. So
yes, for perfect DFS, the procedure will have to be done every night. But
 only once for the night.

It actually depends more on the sensor temperature than the outside
temperature, and the sensor will likely warm up as it and the other
electronics are used. I'm not sure how much that matters in practice.

What you really want to do for the best image quality is to take
multiple dark frames and average them, and use that as the basis for
dark subtraction. If you only have a single dark frame, it will
remove the repeatable structure of the dark current, but it will
increase the true dark-current noise (the non-repeatable,
unpredictable component) by a factor of sqrt(2). Averaging several
dark frames mitigates this effect.

Indeed. That's the question. Until someone gets their hands on the
camera, we won't know for certain. One would *hope* that the high
level of customizability offered for standard NR might indicate the
designers realize that control over noise reduction is important to
some users. And that this knowledge might carry over to DFS on long
exposures. But you never know. I don't know that I've ever seen the
issue mentioned in mainstream reviews.

RE: Bitter grapes: pure red...

2010-09-13 Thread Bob W
including English I have studied 6 languages to varying degrees, and
also did 2 years of linguistics which includes a quick look at various
other non-Indo-European languages. I'm very interested in historical
linguistics, so I try to keep somewhat up-to-date with it. In my
schooldays it was compulsory to take at least one Foreign language up
to the age of 13 or 14, but nowadays I don't think any foreign
languages are compulsory, which is scandalous in my opinion.

  B

I totally agree with you, Bob. I find my knowledge of 2.5 language (I
don't
write Hebrew and hardly read) most useful in great many situations. And
 entertaining as well.

Consider this (joke). Kama in Hebrew means how much or how many
depending on context. S utra (two words) in Russian means in the
morning... So, Kama S_Utra becomes somewhat funny. Further, S vechera
(two words) meaning in the evening can be used as an opposite of Kama
 Sutra - Kama Svechera :-).

one of our TV sports commentators is called Sue Barker, which amuses me
because it is so similar to the Russian word for 'dog'.

I have a problem with your flickr lightbox and it's lack of respect for

it freezes my email... I think there is a way you can adjust that so it

As long as I remember to do it before I jsut click I can cut and paste

I like your confounded bridge shot a lot, especially... and the ..

the soft focus...

I'd adjust the color somewhat in the Sidekick shot for closer to the

It's a really nice expression you captured and subjectg placement :-)

RE: GESO: Photographic Therapy

2010-09-13 Thread Bob W
You may remember last week I mentioned I'd gone outside to take some
photos when an aftershock just about sent me over the edge. It was timed
just when I was settling back into work after lunch. I was exhausted from
lack of sleep, I'd just about had it with my employer, and the project I
was
working on has been a thorn in my side for the past few weeks. Plus I was
alone at home and the isolation was not doing me any good either.

So I went outside to the garden to try and clear my head. I saw our
magnolia
tree in full flower and decided I wanted to take a couple of photos of it.
So I
went inside to get the camera, and ended up spending a bit of quality time
 with it.

 http://www.multi.net.nz/therapy/

Taking these helped me relax, probably by distraction more than anything
else. All K10D and FA100/2.8 Macro, handheld.

I've done nothing to these apart from resizing. There are a couple more
pics
that need a little processing but I had to take my Photoshop machine down
to make room for my work PC. So they'll have to wait.

Smart move. Nice shots.

Re: K7 with M lenses

2010-09-13 Thread P. J. Alling
Sometimes it's dead on, sometimes it's way off. I suspect it has
something to do with meter sensitivity. Camera manufacturers used to
publish EV sensitivity charts, too bad they don't do that anymore. The
stopped down metering, (Green Button), works best in bright light if
you're not stopped down too much. Even in bright sunlight stopping down
to f16 or so will usually give inconsistent results. The meter works
much better working continuously with a wide open lens.

The other method, (which since I don't have a K-7, I'm not sure is
available to you), is to hold in the DOF lever, which stops down the
lens and turns /off/ the meter for a lens in A mode, but turns *on* the
meter if the aperture ring is being used. That gives a bit more
consistent results, and it's easier to see when the meter is out of
range before shooting. There is no out of range indicator of course but
if the shutter speed indicator doesn't change as the lens aperture
changes, the meter is out of range.

Rick,
I saw it as well but didn't comment. I enjoyed it, but didn't have
anything to add.
The birch trunks were nice, well lit, and reminded me of a similar one
we lost in the front yard.
On further review, Chicago's climate is really on the fringe of the
Birch's range.
The bark and trunks are lovely and decorative, but they fall to
desease to easily.
We have a river birch in the yard now, very textured bark and better
survival rates.
But I still miss the white birch bark.

I use my K-7 almost exclusively with M and A lenses, the latter in
normal M mode. Metering is inconsistent and varies greatly with the
different lenses, e.g. it's OK with my M1.4/50 mm and totally off with
the M2/85 mm.

Since I've been using a Contarex with a 'tired' selenium meter for a
number of years, I've learnt to estimate exposure, which is what I'm
usually doing with the K-7.

White balance isn't much better either.

Re: K7 with M lenses

2010-09-13 Thread Jens

I may be using my M lenses too little. But I have never noticed any exposure
problems - except for those caused by the well known slow aperture syndrom,
occuring when lenses are left unused for too long - or stored with open
aperture blades (on a camera or otherwise).

I use a Seikanon wide angle macro lens quite often - which works like an M
lens. It's an absolutely brilliant lens - which I believe is made by a company
related to the later so well known Seiko brand. No exposure problems, that I
know of. Razor sharp.

Re: K7 with M lenses

2010-09-13 Thread John Francis

I believe the issues surfaced when using lenses with a large maximum
aperture (such as a 50mm/f1.4).

Although Pentax never explained exactly what was happening, the most
plausible hypothesis I saw was that the exposure metering in the K10D
(and, I would assume, in later cameras) had some sort of compensation
curve for the metering system based on the maximum aperture of the lens
(presumably because of known problems with light hitting sensors at an
oblique angle). An 'M' lens does not communicate maximum aperture (or
the aperture to be used) to the body, so the exposure correction would
not be performed (or would be performed using one fixed value for all
'M' lenses at any aperture).

I didn't pay too much attention to the issue, because I decided to go
with 'A' or later lenses back in '95 when I got my PZ-1p, so I rarely
put an 'M' lens on any of my later bodies. And, in any case, I don't
assume the metering on any DSLR is going to give me as good control of
the exposure as I can get by looking at the histogram.

The green button metering technique should get you close; just be
prepared to apply some exposure compensation if you want it spot-on.
That was necessary (at least with the *ist-D and K10D) anyway; from
what Paul Stenquist says the K-7 may do rather better in this regard.

peso night jump

2010-09-13 Thread Larry Colen
I'm posting this picture not so much for the artistic content, but because I
find it a miracle of modern technology that there is anything even recognizable
in it:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/4987096603/

It was shot at night, with the K-x and the 18-250 without flash, of a
parachuter landing in the dark.

Yes, if I'd had a faster prime on the camera, I might have actually gotten a
fairly reasonable shot, but in the dust and wind at burning man, I did not want
to be changing lenses. Since I was mostly going to be taking photos of things
that were either lit up, or on fire, I figured that the versatility of the
18-250 was more important than speed.

It was shot hand held at 6400 f/4.0 1/15 Sec at 25mm.

Welcome to the 21st century.

Re: K7 with M lenses

2010-09-13 Thread Bob Sullivan
I haven't tried M or K lenses on the K-7 but did an experiment with
the K-20 when new.
Here are the results for a K35mm f2 at different apertures using the
green button.
(ie. select aperture, 'green button', take photo at selected speed)

http://picasaweb.google.com/rf.sullivan/K352ApertureTestOnK20d#

The resulting exposures aren't bad, but seem best wide open.
I can't figure out the mechanics of how it works.
The exposures actually get lighter as you go to smaller apertures
(bigger f #'s).
I would expect the opposite.

In practice, chimp if you use these lenses.

 Hello List
I just won an auction for a used (twice) Pentax Optio W60 at ebay.
www.dpreview.com has done a waterproof group test. The Optio W60 did pretty
well. Excellent image quality, but no image stabilizer.
I paid about 1/3 the price of a new W90, which doesn't do so well at dpreview.
I need the camera for sea kayaking trips. I just killed my old Lumix mega
zoom, which was just 4 MP, and not quite up to today's standards. The water
killed it instantly, even though it didn't realy get under the water, but my
 bag got wet :-(

Does anyone here have experiences with the Optio W60?

Hej,
bought the WP five years ago and still love it; gave it to my parents
just a few months ago. Also know someone with a W60 and she is very
happy with it. Do you want to know anything specifically?

Cheers

Re: K7 with M lenses

2010-09-13 Thread P N Stenquist

On Sep 13, 2010, at 3:02 PM, John Francis wrote:

I believe the issues surfaced when using lenses with a large maximum
aperture (such as a 50mm/f1.4).

Although Pentax never explained exactly what was happening, the most
plausible hypothesis I saw was that the exposure metering in the K10D
(and, I would assume, in later cameras) had some sort of compensation
curve for the metering system based on the maximum aperture of the
lens

I've shot a bit with a K 85/1.8 on the K7, but haven't used it
extensively and don't recall how successful those attempts were. I'll
have to give it a try and see how it does wide open and at a small ap.

otherwise).

I use a Seikanon wide angle macro lens quite often - which works
like an M lens. It's an absolutely brilliant lens - which I believe
is made by a company related to the later so well known Seiko
brand. No exposure problems, that I know of. Razor sharp.
