I've been told that the Christchurch City Council has its own Youtube channel

apps are generally small, a couple contain reference databases and are
larger than 100MB; the iPhone is a great notebook, and i do things like
transfer PDFs to it that i need to be able to look at in a meeting;
iPads can do the same and are big enough to better as a reading device
and more comfortable for video, detailed presentations and fairly
serious writing (with an external keyboard); you can plug them into an
HDMI monitor as well (i think you'll get 720p)

Re: PESO - Coalmine#2b

2011-03-19 Thread AlunFoto
Glad that others see what I see. :-)
I work from a laptop with a dubious screen right now, so I do all the
editing by histogram, primarily. According to the histogram, there's
no clipping of the shadows in either channel. I also double-checked
that it looked okay on my smartphone screen, just in case. Can't be
more uncalibrated than that, I figured...
The image is taken well after sunset, with a deep indigo colour to the
sky. The camera naturally wanted to expose the scene closer to
midtones, so I had to darken it in post to get the night-time mood.

I tried to do some Radermacherish night shots too, but it really
wasn't dark enough. The pictured scene required f/32 at ISO 200 for an
exposure of 4 minutes. The resulting exposure suffered from heat
shimmer (yes, you do get that at low temps also) and diffraction, so I
wasn't happy with it. I learned two things, though. One is that the
noise levels look very good, and the other is that long exposures are
very demanding on the battery in cold conditions.

In general, I find that the 645D is more of a challenge to carry
across temperature gradients than are K-mount DSLRs. I may be just the
sheer bulk of the thing calling for longer heat-up time, but the
camera itself feels colder when outdoors too. I think the metal % is
higher in this baby than in K-mount. And same goes for the lenses,
except the FA 35mm f/3.5. I guess the new DFA 55 would do better too.
The old 645-A series is virtually all metal, and so are many of the
645-FA.

Re: Getting prints mounted and/or framed

Larry,

As others have suggested, - you want to use a standard size mat and frame.
One of a good (chain) stores for finding reasonable frames
(and mats) is Aaron Brothers (if you have that in the vicinity).

Also, - one of the ways of mounting a photo (I've done that with
photos printed on canvas and watercolor paper), - is a self-adhesive
foam board that you can find at a good art-supplies store.
It is usually sold in pieces that are something like 24x36,
but still inexpensive. Sometimes you can find it in smaller sizes.

To add to what Ann said, most good art stores and some photo stores now have
precut matts in sizes that are more accommodating for modern film and sensor
sizes. For example, 12 x 18 and 8 x 12 precut matts are widely available in a
range of styles and colors. I've also seen 17 x 12, 11 x 15, 12 x 12 and 8 x 8.

I would rate my experiences (in order from BAD to WORSE):

TWC RoadRunner (Cable)

BellSouth (ADSL)

Mindspring (dialup)

I can't actually say Mindspring had the "worst" customer service and/or

Hasn't really done that much harm to "the two-faced bastards in DC",

The innocents put in harms way are those local people in other countries

Re: Getting prints mounted and/or framed

2011-03-19 Thread Jack Davis
Mounting the print can be as simple as suspending it from a line of "acid free"
double sided tape across the top or an array of roller glue applicator stripes.
Print size could possibly bear on the chosen method.
Over the years I've had prints mounted; heat, sticky board, vacuum and spray
glued. For some time, however, it's all been as initially noted above.

I was a sophomore in high school, and was active in the Brotherhood of Natural

Photographically, I was spending a fair chunk of time in Dad's and my darkroom.
 My photographic kit consisted of a Minolta SRT-101 with a 58/1.4 lens, a 2x

For me, it works for:

- the usual stuff (mobile access to web, email, address book)
- audio playback of podcasts and music
- ebooks (epubs and kindle)
- viewing photos and videos
- drawing, sketching, etc
- showing and viewing photographs

It's also a testing platform for a couple of products I'd like to develop.

It can do a lot more, all a matter of what you want to do and what

Well for the most part it has come along pretty good. Just across the way
though the houses that were along Richland Creek are waiting to be bought
and I am guessing torn down. It really was surreal watching the news and
seeing the stretch of I-24 around Bell Rd. exit completely under water. I
drive back and forth that direction when I head to work in Antioch. I drove
to work that Monday morning and it was surreal again seeing all that debris
and what not that the flood waters carried along. A car sat upside down on
the banks of the creek for a long time until water subsided long enough I
suppose for them to get a tow truck to be able to move the car.

Hmmm...

At this time in 1976 I would have been working in accounts receivable
for (the now long since closed down) Kaufman Footwear in Kitchener,
Ontario. It was my year off between high school and university; by
the next year I had embarked on a rather longish post-secondary career
(long, not due to lots of degrees, but due to lots of - e -
"diversions").

Among other things, Kaufman made Sorel winter boots - at that time
they were very unfashionable snowmobile and work boots for subzero
temps.

I bet Dave wore them whilst surveying up north!

When Kaufman went under, someone bought the rights to that line.
Right now they're the hottest winter boot fashion around, to be seen
adorning the feet of all sorts of young hotties and hipsters.

Of course they're made in China now, and they don't say "Sorels by
Kaufman" like they used to, they're just "Sorels". Actually, now that
I think of it, I worked in the Kaufman factory as a summer job when I
was at university and was on the Sorel assembly line. Worst job I
ever did, grinding down the soles so they'd be flush with the upper.
Got rubber bits all over me and in my clothing. Yuck!

But that was later. 35 years ago it was in the office, for my year
after high school.

Pretty much didn't take any pix to speak of, except a few forays to
Mosport Raceway for CanAms and F1 races with my trusty Praktica SLR.

quasi-governmental, or non-governmental -- to operate in a more open
fashion as a result of any of these leaks?

I'd submit that it's had the exact opposite effect, causing every entity
that's been targeted to review its security procedures and make
draconian adjustments, along with causing every potentially impacted
entity get out in front of the possibility of similar leaks. And, so
far, the only marginal benefit that's occurred as a consequence of any
of the leaks has amounted to little more than a confirmation of
long-held suspicions among people on both sides. The only real "shock"
experienced by anyone over the information that's been uncovered is over
the fact that none of it had come to light long ago.

And then there was the supreme irony of Assange petitioning the courts
to keep secret the address listed in his bond information -- something
that has always been a matter of public record.

Not to worry, Adobe has promos and sales quite often. The mother of all

first year the the University of Western Ontario, and because of the
accident was forced to withdraw for that term. I had a badly broken
leg and was in a cast and crutches for the next nine months.
But...every cloud has a silver lining...as I discovered that a cast
and crutches were girl magnets! Woo-hoo! My male friends with fully
functional legs could not believe the way the babes flocked to me!
Alas, eventually I had to return to two-legged transport and things
returned to normal. Oh well.

Photography was done with my father's Instamatic camera. However, I
did sue the guy who ran me over and with the settlement bought my
first SLR: a Miranda dx-3.

Re: Enablements (or: holy crap this thing's awesome)

2011-03-19 Thread John Celio
It took forever for my K-5 battery to charge last night, but as soon as that
light turned off I upgraded the firmware and started playing around with the
settings. The first photos (and video) I took were all of my cat, so I will
spare you from having to see that.

Holy crap, this thing is lightyears ahead of my K10D. I was thinking of
keeping the K10D as a backup, but I think it may just end up in permanent
storage (no one will want this lemon of a camera, so I'm not going to try to
sell it). The build and layout feels nothing like the Pentaxes I'm used to.
I was out of the loop for so long!

My only negative comment so far is that the focus-assist lamp is almost
useless when using a large lens like the DA* 16-50. You have to be back
pretty far for the light to illuminate near the center of the frame. I have
no idea where they could have put it that would have been better, however.

Anyway, I'm going to spend a good chunk of today looking for things to
photograph and playing with this amazing piece of technology. It feels great
to finally be excited about photography again!

My K-5 is here! The UPS guy dropped it off this morning, but since I'm
at work I haven't had a chance to dive in yet. The box has been
whispering at me all day, begging me to open it up and retrieve my
prize, but I must resist its siren call and finish this damn project my
boss gave me this morning. Oh the torture! Quiet your song, digital
temptress!

Did I mention last month that I got a new laptop? Well, more of a
netbook. It was free from Google and came installed with Chrome OS
(beta, of course). I was picked to be part of the Chrome OS Pilot
Program, so I've been helping test the OS and the hardware, and so far I
think it's pretty great for a netbook. Still buggy and there are lots of
features that haven't been implemented yet (like a working file browser
and controls for the built-in webcam), but since it's pretty much the
Chrome browser running a laptop, it does what I expect and performs
pretty well. It should be pretty awesome when it's ready for general
consumption.

that is why "prevention of injury watch" is so smart - the argument is
they had to do it to keep him from committing suicide. they did it for
his own good. asking someone if he is ok every five minutes around the
clock has enormous impact on mental stability in the long run.
combined with the monotony it breaksup your life into a repetitive 5
minute cycle. you lose track of time in a matter of days and temporal
disorientation is known to accelerate all sorts of other ill effects.

much has what most people want from a computer, as long as your

yes, many options; i've even used iPhones to ssh into servers, an
experience that would be vastly superior on the iPad; logmein and others
are available; for diagramming i'd look at OmniGraffle (a favorite tool
of mine on the desktop, but i've never used it on an iPad); i'm not sure
what kinds of IT tools you might mean (after decades as a programmer,
i'm still never sure what people mean when by "IT") -- a web search with
the name or category of a tool and "ipad" will usually answer your
questions quickly

iOS does very well with PDFs; it can open (and edit) Office formats, and
there quite a few ways to use it for "productivity"; most apps are under
$5, and many truly useful ones are free, but some prices are justifiably
higher (OmniGraffle is $50)

i don't feel much impact from the lack of Flash -- it is mostly
restaurants and other inconsequential sites that provide no alternative
to their Flash interfaces; but then, i customarily block Flash on the
desktop too, running it only selectively

Re: OT: iPad - how much memory is enough?

2011-03-19 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I don't know about MS Office ... I don't use Office at all, I use
Numbers, Pages and Keynote from Apple's iWork package on my desktop
and laptop computers. All three for the iPad are about $30 if I want
to buy them.

Normally, I don't use these sorts of things on the iPad though. I
output documents for display into PDF and show that. If I want to do
more sophisticated presentations, or data manipulation, I'd buy them.

Other software ... I haven't bought much. I'm not a huge software
collector, I only buy what I use. Most of what I use are a couple of
freebies (like the Amazon Kindle Reader), a couple of inexpensive
photo massaging gizmos, etc. I've probably spent 10:1 on buying
content (ebooks, videos and music) rather than applications.

No, it does not support flash media. I abhor flash websites anyway:
have a flash blocker on my desktop systems, so I don't tend to go to
websites that are flash anyway.

I haven't found any issues with loading content. What content
restrictions are you referring to? I load PDFs, epubs, Kindle books,
videos, photographs, etc. Most of them I get free or generate myself.

There are about 65,000 application titles for the iPad now. Many of
those are content delivery apps, though, as opposed to "make or
control your own stuff" apps.

I don't use the iPad or iPod Touch to do things I normally do with the

RE: OT Thirty Five years ago.

2011-03-19 Thread John Coyle
Seems a long way from here...
35 years ago I had just started working for an engineering company in the
Midlands in England. Just bought a house in a pleasant village about 20
miles from work, settled my 15-year old daughter and 6-year old son into
their new schools, and loved the environment. Played badminton in the
village hall once a week, and walked the dog every Sunday: once for five
miles in fresh snow and before that I didn't know how good that could be!
Owned a crap car, a 1967 Ford Escort which had definitely seen better days,
but at least it kept going.
Photographically, I was still shell-shocked at the theft of my Pentax kit
from my car, complete with photos of a concert by Ella Fitzgerald and the
Count Basie band at London's Festival Hall the year before. I had filled
the gap with a Fujica st605n (or 705n), which was good and took K-mount
lens. I'd also joined a photo club locally, and was having a great time
once a month shooting real live girls in various stages of undress! One of
them eventually went on to become a Page 3 girl, so the quality (of the
girls, not necessarily my photos) was pretty high.
Happy days

It's not the government that's rational, but the humans who run it and
do it's bidding that are. If you think that there are no consequences
improper behavior should, just ask the General in charge of Abu Ghraib,
she no longer has a career in the US military, the subordinates that
were directly responsible were court-martialed and most received long
prison sentences. If Manning is being mistreated it will come out and
heads will roll. Maybe not the heads you want to roll but someone in
the chain of responsibility will pay. Hell, the US Navy just relieved
the Skipper of the Enterprise for actions he took as the executive
officer, that didn't even come close to mistreating a prisoner. His
immediate superiors who knew of his actions and tacitly allowed them to
continue will be taking early retirement with loss of pay and rank.
Their careers ruined as his.

yes but how many get away with similar things? and how do you know
those weren't just pawn sacrifices... my impression is you don't do
such things unless you are in an athmosphere that condones or
