I was just bemoaning the lack of this myself and was told just to use the

I'd like a

I must admit that I definitely like the convenience and portability
of the E-PL1 (nominally my wife's camera ...)

http://www.jfwaf.com/PAW/PAW.php?name=PAW1031

Something about that size that would take my Pentax glass (without
losing any functionality) would certainly make me take a look at it.

It might not make a lot of sense on the back of telephoto lenses;
as another poster has mentioned, the balance of a DSLR on long glass
is much improved by the addition of a battery grip. But I don't use
long glass all the time, and a smaller, lighter body would be handy.
I'm not too bothered about the format - either APS-C or 4/3.

Of interest is that the way Youtube compresses video here - you're
presenting the system with a difficult video!! Moving water like that is
testing the encoder to the max and it can't keep up with the changes in
the water as it moves. How old is your Mac. It's quite possible the
video processor can't cope with displaying all that water in full
resolution on your display.

here's a test - simply make the window displaying the video of your
original a lot smaller - say a quarter the size of your screen - now
does it still jump? If it doesn't, you are hereby enabled to go buy a
new Mac ;-)

Hitting info to zoom in Live View is a boon for manual focusing, especially in

It is very tough, however to use LV to focus on moving objects because of the

Well, of course it is.
But who else are you going to accept as the authority on the language?

An anectode I fondly remember from my past:

At one of the Cambridge Union debates, the principal guest speaker
was Peter Ustinov. He was his usual erudite self, and used a couple
of particularly florid expressions, provoking some mild heckling.

They should have known better; he was prepared for that, en explained
that he'd checked the usage first by looking the expression up in the OED.
When this in turn was met by the anticipated cat-calls, he explained that
he would have used some other dictionary, but apparently Cambridge didn't
publish one!

What he was not prepared for, though, was the immediate response from some
unknown wit in the back benches: "We don't need to - we know all the words!"

(No - I don't know who made the wisecrack. I couldn't see the speaker from
where I was sitting up in the gallery, and I didn't recognise the voice.)

One of them apparently was fairly near my house. I heard it ... the
distinctive "sounded like a freight train going past", but did not see
anything.

Haven't been able to get any real news. My cable was still off at home
when I left for my internship this morning.

Came down to Asheboro after I got off work to make my weekly check on my
apartment & the internet is on here, but none of the news gives me any
overview. It's all about specific homes in some subdivisions that were
destroyed, but no context to tell me where the subdivisions are located.

Even the TV news reports don't tell me anything other than some Raleigh PD
spokesman droning on and on and on about how a tree fell on a trailer and
this child was in this room and that child was there and this other child
was ... all gory details I don't need and nothing to tell me where the
damage is.

Local newspaper has close up images of damaged buildings, but no captions
to tell me what building it was, or where it's located.

Not names for streets that are closed.

K-5 high ISO quality , frames per second, bracketing feature, natural
shooting mode only, & AV, TV et al. modes, white balance features--then
add
improved lowlight autofocus.

Get rid of everything else--video, creative filters, multiple exposure
shooting, etc. I think a stripped down camera would make a nice back-up
camera or primary camera for that matter. It would have the quality of
the

K5 but hopefully at a lower cost. One could use the fancy features on the
K5 if needed.

Probably sounds crazy, but I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. :-) Cheers,

I'm awfully happy with the K-5. (I was out last night trying to take
flash-free pictures in the light of the full moon using my old Sigma
30mm f1.4; it didn't come off for one reason or another, but I haven't
given up). Anyhow, it can shoot in as little light as I'll ever need,
and as many frames-per-second as I'll ever need, with as many pixels
as I'll ever need, and has a battery as big as I'll ever need, and so
on and so on.

I'm thinking if I were a Pentax product manager trying to figure out
what to put in the K-3 or K-1... I just wouldn't know where to start.

Smaller would be nice but you can only take that so far before the
K-glass gets way out of balance with the body; the K-5 looks
deliciously butch with the short extra-fat Sigma on.

Once again, what should Pentax be working on? -T

1. I don't want smaller. It is hard to manage a large heavy lens on a tiny
camera body. I've tried it with my EP-L2. I don't have the K-5 yet but have
played with one a bit, and quickly realized that I would not be able to use it
comfortably, even with something like the 21mm, without adding the battery
grip. With my K-20 I can go either way, and tend to use the grip mostly with
larger lenses.
2. Auto-focus will never be fast enough or precise enough, but that doesn't
mean that continued work should not go into that aspect of the system.
3. Why should I have to manually adjust each lens to the camera to achieve
proper focus? Give me a firmware fix that evaluates the lens and develops a
unique solution for that lens. Allow me to edit it, just in case.
4. I don't want a tethered camera. I want a camera with a high speed Bluetooth
type of transmitter/receiver that allows me to remotely control the camera, and
do on-the-fly auto downloads of images, without plugging in a tether. Give me a
transponder in a separate box to boost speed and distance if need be, but no
tethers!
5. Quality GPS encoding into EXIF. Software options for setting defaults to be
used when satellite reception is insufficient for a good fix.
6. More control over bracketing. When doing macro, for example, why can't I
bracket on depth of field (i.e., variations in f-stop) and let the camera
adjust shutter and/or ISO to maintain proper EV? (This idea stolen from my
brother. If there is already a way to do this, he and I would both love to hear
about it!)
7. I would like to be able to chose whether the camera defaults to HSM vs.
screw-drive AF for any given lens. And to change that on the fly. (So that I
could use an HSM lens on an auto-focus-capable tele-extender.)

Another thing the camera needs is lenses to put on the camera. The Pentax
vaunted backward compatibility has allowed them to get away with ignoring their
lens development in many areas, but they need to produce some modern lenses
already!
- DA* 250-600/5.6?
- DA* 600/4.0?
- DA 800/5.6?
Yes, I know that these would be big and heavy and expensive, but the option for
a special order, at least, should be there.

And where are the DA 1.4 and DA 2.0 tele-extenders?!?

Re: "Pair of binoculars" (Was: OT: Possible enablement - Pentax binoculars?)

2011-04-17 Thread Igor Roshchin

[See the most interesting for PDML finging on this questions a bit
further in the text.]

Apparently, when I looked up "binocular" at M-W.com,
I didn't notice that for the second meaning, they mention that
it is used in the plural form.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/binocular?show=1
OED has the same.
(BTW, AFAIK, OED is focused more on British English, - hence, "binocle"
seems to be more British than American. "Binocle" appears to come from
French, while "binocular" originates as short for "binocular glass")

So, I stand corrected about usage of "binoculars" for a single object.

I still dislike "pair of binoculars" being used for just one object.
If I were a sales person, and a customer would order that way,
I would sell two!

> Similar usage as "a pair of pants." The binoculars have two oculars,
> pants have two legs.
>
> stan

"bi-" already stands for two.
You don't say "a pair of bicycles" for just one bike, even though there
are two (mono-)cycles in each.

Joseph: it would be "people's brains" ;-)

Steven wrote:
> No, that would be "a couple of pairs of binoculars". I am personally
> holding out for "multiple binoculi".
> ;-)

Steven, binoculi is plural for binoculus... :-)

And now, - the most interesting on the subject of this word for PDMLers:
>From OED:
"1935Discovery Nov. 330/2 We were busy watching the parties of
cormorant through the binoculars."

Bob: you are correct.
Yes, "pantaloons" originates from the Italian comedy character,
Venetian Pantaleone, who was wearing long and wide pants.
This word propagated to various European languages: pantaloni (Italian)
pantalons (German), pantalones (Spanish), pantaloons (English)
I learned this some 3 years ago when I was investigating the origin
of these "pairs of ...".
(And OED suggests "pantaloons" as the contemporary spelling.
M-W - gives this and "Pantalone" for the character,
but seems to suggest only the former one for the breeches.)

Here is what OED said then about ethymology of this word (I am copying
from my 2008 notes, it may have changed since that):
(OED online, Draft Revision, Mar. 2008):
Pantaloon [< French pantalon the character Pantaloon (1583-4 as
Panthalon), person who changes his behaviour, opinions, etc.,
out of self-interest (1651), a comically hypocritical character (1679),
costume of Pantaloon (1585 as pantaleon), close-fitting garment going
from the neck or shoulders to the feet with straight legs (1628), type
of (1650), long trousers (1790; also 1797 denoting a woman's undergarment)
and its etymon Italian pantalone the Venetian character Pantaloon
(1561 or earlier), so called from the frequency of Pantalone as a male
forename among Venetians, which was in turn after the name of San
Pantaleone or San Pantalone, the patron saint of the city (from at least the
10th cent.). Cf. Italian pantaloni trousers (1799; < French).]

Stan, I am very happy with my Pentax 8x42 DCF HR II binoculars. Phase
coated, nitrogen filled, water proof, and astoundingly bright! I
liked them so much, I bought a 2nd pair so we both have them. You
won't be happy with Bushnel and I don't know about Nikon or Canon.
See the write-ups at Willowby's in NYC. Regards, Bob and Lynn

My inclination to brand loyalty tells me to buy Pentax, all other
things equal. But the few reviews I have found (e.g., in
Cornell's birding magazine) put Pentax toward the bottom of the
list. And I don't want to buy a clearly inferior product just for
the Pentax name.

I've been playing around with a two-flash setup for macro in the last
couple of days, using an AF540FGZ in addition to the AF160-FC ring
flash. Getting the right balance between the two is an interesting
exercise. When using the 540 to provide background illumination, I
find it most predictable to set it to wireless slave mode, put it on
manual and home in on the right illumination for the particular
background. Pretty sure I haven't actually nailed it with this one,
but even getting to a proof of concept is a small victory for me.

Comments on lighting techniques most appreciated.

I should treat you to my continuous video, handheld, while my dog and I hiked
several miles in the hills east of the coast of northern California. Sometimes
following the dog, sometimes looking at the view, zooming in and out to frame
the shot. 50 minutes of bouncy video, whipped about pans, and nauseating zooms
while panning. The camera was a very early $250 digital piece of crap, that
shot a proprietary AVI that could not be played via Quicktime until it was run
through a DivX translator. Oh yes, the sensor was somehow messed up so the
color across the width of the frame was striated and multicolored.

Artsy, is the way I described it!

Mpeg Streamclip:

Yes, I just finished playing around with that tonight and I'm quite
impressed with it. Especially so since it solved a big problem we were
having. Turns out that iMovie and iDVD between them cannot author a
standard 4:3 DVD with a letterboxed 16:9 movie on it. Simply refuses. IT
either squishes the 16:9 or stupidly crops the sides.

But if you export the 16:9 video from iMovie from MPEG Streamclip with
Aspect 4:3 and Zoom X/Y of 1.333, you get your vid at 16:9 perfectly
letterboxed in a 4:3 container!

Two thumbs up. Excellent utility.

BTW, if you do any more than one or two videos a year, or would like
some much better functionality (iMovie is comparatively limited AFAIK)
then you can do a lot worse that Final Cut Express.

Cotty, you should give iMovie '11 a try sometime; it's gotten much more

Apple may be headed with their DV software. Have a look at this Final

There's some controversy in the comments about whether Final Cut Pro X
is really intended to replace FC Express or what.

Actually, we are on the verge of getting Final Cut Express 4 as we have
run into limitations and annoyances with iMovie ourselves.

You are correct, and this usage is observed by professionals in the
field. For example, on Zeiss's web page: "This is corrected by folding
in or separating the barrels of the binocular." Leica: "the most
powerful binocular in the 42mm class"

However, "pair of binoculars" is so much more common in colloquial
American English, that it sounds stilted to talk about "a binocular"
as a layperson.

It's an annual festival here in Manila called Aliwan Festival. The
whole country has a lot of spring/summer festivals celebrating
anything from the planting season, harvest, a Catholic patron saint or
a Muslim wedding; given the fact that we are an archipelago it is
difficult to visit all those places so someone had this idea of
bringing all (or regional representatives) of those traditions in to
one big fiesta. It is a photographer's paradise with all those
participants all dressed up (here are some from two years ago >
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bongmanayon/sets/72157617454987467/).

Instead of trying to shoot the actual parade, what I usually do is go
to the assembly area/staging ground to shoot portraits of the
participants while they are prepping/waiting for the parade to start.
Usually happens around April...an excuse to visit the Philippines ;-)

Re: OT: Possible enablement - Pentax binoculars?

 add
 improved lowlight autofocus.

Get rid of everything else--video, creative filters, multiple exposure

Not an economically feasible solution. You wouldn't be able to sell
enough of them to make the cost appreciably lower than the cost of
the same camera with those features enabled - just about everything
you mention is a "software only" feature, and doesn't affect the
unit cost of manufacturing. About the only hardware difference
would be if there were variations in the FPS rate, and my guess is
that the cost of providing two complete sets of electronics (with
different bus & CPU speeds) would far outweigh any potential savings.

Furthermore, such a camera would only cannibalise K-5 sales. There's
not really any incentive for Pentax to destroy their own market,

There was a live band at the weekly blues dance last night. For various
reasons I decided not to shoot with flash, but just go with available
 light.
The musicians would nod their heads fast enough that I kept having to boost
the ISO to get a fast enough shutter speed, and ended up shooting at ISO
20,00. The thing that impresses me the most isn't the lack of noise, but
 the
 quality of the noise.

With my K20 the noise was mostly blue, which just looked bad.  With the
K-5 even when the noise is really obvious, it looks almost like one of
 those
paintings that are done with making little dots. Stippling?
 Impressionistic?

Mind you, for ISO 20,000, the noise is pretty freaking amazing.  The
thing that I notice more than the noise in some shots is the dynamic range,
when there are bright lights in the background, posterization abounds. In
some cases I get this weird halo effect around the people, I suspect that
 it
might have something to do with the out of focus blur bringing the bright
lights in the background out of clipping and into color.

Would leaving any of that out really save any money? Isn't most of

I was in college and had shot 35mm during HS and had also made good use of
my GIII just before getting the K1000. So when a popular speaker came to
the college I got there early and got a front-row set. Then I sat on the
floor and shot up at him as he spoke, walked, and gestured. He got quite
animated for the cameras. (Some people really enjoy being photographed.)

Anyway, afterward I noticed that the film rewound too quickly. And we all
know what that means. (Or is that assuming too much these days? Have

1) Pentax still needs to improve on low-light autofocus--that's a must.

2) But, here's what I'd like to see: a stripped down camera.
K-5 high ISO quality , frames per second, bracketing feature, natural
shooting mode only, & AV, TV et al. modes, white balance features--then add
improved lowlight autofocus.

Get rid of everything else--video, creative filters, multiple exposure

Guide, it's a California Quail. I might have guessed that.
We have a Finch feeder on a garden-poll just to the right. It's obvious
we've seen many downloading their thistle seed residue on said fence.

Comments welcome!

Very good Jack. The foreground colour is excellent and the overall

There was a live band at the weekly blues dance last night. For various
reasons I decided not to shoot with flash, but just go with available
light. The musicians would nod their heads fast enough that I kept having
to boost the ISO to get a fast enough shutter speed, and ended up shooting
at ISO 20,00. The thing that impresses me the most isn't the lack of
noise, but the quality of the noise.

With my K20 the noise was mostly blue, which just looked bad. With the
K-5 even when the noise is really obvious, it looks almost like one of
those paintings that are done with making little dots. Stippling?
Impressionistic?

Mind you, for ISO 20,000, the noise is pretty freaking amazing. The thing
that I notice more than the noise in some shots is the dynamic range, when
there are bright lights in the background, posterization abounds. In some
cases I get this weird halo effect around the people, I suspect that it
might have something to do with the out of focus blur bringing the bright
lights in the background out of clipping and into color.
