A 400mm f 5.6 (or to do something different, maybe an f4.5) or a zoom

My Tokina 400 f.56 has gotten fogged with Fungus and I replaced it with

Yeah - I meant 77mm. I should know - I used to own the A* 200/2.8,
and still have the FA* 80-200/2.8. But I failed to catch the "72".

The mistake doesn't materially affect the point I was making, though.

That would be nice.

> I would like to see a longer zoom: DA* 250-500.

I doubt if we'll see anything in that range. But there might conceivably
be a market for a slightly shorter zoom (such as a 150-400 or thereabouts),
or even just a repackaging of the FA* 250-600 optics in a sealed housing,
with SDM focussing motors. But that would be expensive - I don't know
if they'd ever sell enough of them to recover the manufacturing design
and setup costs.

It's probably cheaper to buy a four thirds camera and a 100-400 lens
than whatever Pentax would charge for this. And if you're carrying
around that much weight, an extra small camera body isn't significant.

At present, though, there doesn't seem to be a 4/3 100-400 :-(
Olympus have a 90-250/f2.8 (!!) for $5500 or so, and Sigma offer
a 300-800/f5.6 for $8000. I'd bet that a DA* 250-500 or 250-600
would probably cost even more than that.

> I would like to see a DA* 400 or 500.

A DA* 400/f5.6 shouldn't be too hard to get to market at a vaguely
affordable price point.

faster than that without getting really big and expensive.

Perhaps a 100/2 or /1.7?

Probably not enough buyers, considering the price that that a lens
that long and fast would require-- probably 2K. I think it would
require a front element of at least 90 mm.

I rather doubt that. If a 200/f2.8 can be made with a 72mm front
element, I'd expect a 100mm/1.7 to be possible at something smaller
than that - possibly even sharing the same filter thread as the
50-135/f2.8.

The A*200/f2.8, FA*200/f2.8 & DA*200/f2.8 all have 77mm front filter. As
did the A*135/f1.8.

The DA* zooms do a very fine job; 16-50 + 50-135 for occasions that call for
wide to moderately long, and the 16-50 + 60-250 for occasions that call for
more length. But still . . .

I would like to see a wider zoom: DA* 9-18 or 10-20.
I would like to see a longer zoom: DA* 250-500.
I would like to see a DA* 400 or 500.
And I would like compatible 1.4, 1.7, and 2.0 teleconverters.

And a DA* 19/2.5 to replace my DA 21mm but mostly just to verify that Pentax
still has a quirky sense of humor.

It would be nice to have Pentax revisit its magic touch with macros, thinking
particularly of DA* versions of 100 and 200mm macros.

The DA* bit is important for all of the above- both for the weather sealing and
the quiet fast focusing.

Gopher wood too expensive and rare. I'd prefer a good marine caulk as well.
Actually, I'd go with a steel hull. Wood from main deck up is OK. Teak.

If this is going to be bad, I'd rather portholes every 4 cubits on all decks
save the bottom two. Easy on the door in the side. Cranes on the forward and

Forget the marine creatures in this list. They can fend for themselves. I'll

The fast 30 is a worthy goal, but they have a 14/2.8. Can't much faster than
that without getting really big and expensive.

> Perhaps a 100/2 or /1.7?

Probably not enough buyers, considering the price that that a lens that long
and fast would require-- probably 2K. I think it would require a front element
of at least 90 mm. And with the high ISO performance of the K5, that kind of
speed isn't necessary, IMO.

One of my constant bitches for many years has been the refusal to put utilities
underground by the most of the power companies in the last 50 years. They are
doing it, but usually only in new developments where there is nothing in the
way, like newly cleared ground. The only time I've ever had that luxury was in
Fredericksburg Virginia, buth in my original townhouse purchase, and later in
the house we had built in an area that was forest, then the roads and utilities
were put in, finally the houses.

I champion bringing all utilities underground over the next 50 years, if for no
other reason than the aesthetic. And kids will stop wrapping their cars around
them. Sky divers won't get hung up in them. Nor Balloons. Our view will be
improved greatly, photographically and by appeal, as we no longer will have to
look at expensive pairs of sneakers dangling from them.

DOWN WITH THE WIRES, AMERICA!!! (and everywhere else) (think what a bounty of
jobs that would become available if the go'mint formed a DWW whose goal was to
transition overheads to buried, ojne street at a time. Tell your
representatives, local, state, and federal about this plan. Improve the economy
with me!

I want the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 that Pentax co-designed with Tokina and
that therefore Tokina does NOT OFFER in a Pentax mount (presumably
because they are contractually prevented from doing so). That contract
only makes sense if Pentax actually offers it themselves. To prevent
Tokina from building it in a Pentax mount when Pentax has no intention
of building it is working against the interests of the buyers of their

Irene really hit the Connecticut shoreline hard as far as the Power Grid
was concerned. I blame people fighting to keep their scenic trees.
Still I don't blame them much but it's a trade off. Trees that knock
out the power in a less than horrible storm, (which is still pretty
unlikely), or reliable power. Irene had 65 mph winds when she reached
Connecticut but still knocked out more of the Power Grid than storms
with 100 mph winds have in the past. Storm surge did destroy a lot of
expensive landscaping and washed out a few roads however. I'll be off
line mostly until the power is back looks like a 4 more days to a week

  She is also an awesome

Oh, and yep, Ash was "#7" (and they still joke about it).

That's good to know, haven't been online that much. I didn't spring
for it before because I felt that I can't buy online and need an
extended warranty -adding too much to the price (and here in Canada we
pay extra). My concern was that I heard that people that use SDM
sporadicaly have problems -and I wouldn't be using it that often- so
I've sticking to good'ol screwdrive & MF lenses.

I have a list.

10-17mm fisheye zoom

17-70mm f4.0

15mm

77mm limited

The long end seems to be well covered. Something wider than 15mm would
be nice, but I don't need a Zoom, in those focal lengths, just a wide
wide rectilinear lens.

Marnie the akaless

(I will explain this once, then refer to it about two more times. When I
first came on the Net everyone was using handles. As a single woman,
younger, I also got hit on a fair amount in certain venues. So it seemed like
a
good idea to have a handle. I went first with femaledeer then later with
doeadeer as an email address. I shortened it to Doe in my signature/tag line.
So for about 15 years in certain venues I was known as Doe. All that seems
silly now, so I am going to drop it here, where I have used my own name
anyway. I'll reserve it for people who actually know me by that handle. For a
few weeks I will be the akaless, then just Marnie.)

PESO "Here and now"

2011-08-30 Thread Bruce Walker
I attended a wedding of a former colleague and friend on Sunday. It was
a small one, about 30 guests; family and close friends. Of course I
brought the kit with me.

In the evening at the reception during the DJ/dancing bit I was
experimenting with mixed flash and ambient and dragging the shutter. I
went fully manual, flash attached (also manual) head rotated to bounce
off wall right behind me. I set the 16-50's aperture at 5.0 to give me
some focus/DoF wiggle room. When I metered the room, the shutter was
down around 1/5th sec.

Here's one shot that stood out. Two of the guests ...

Thanks, Brian.

Yes, I wanted to include those dudes in the shot. I got better images
of the bare-chested guy with the tatoo and his friend, but I felt that
including the faces at the other table captured the scene better:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=14097799
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=14097802

I also wanted to highlight the "Gluten Free" sign, which seemed to me
to be incongruous with the spirit of these diners.

BTW, this is a very nice Italian restaurant, run by a family I have
known for decades. No way they would be permitted to sit inside like
that. .

Re: Irene

2011-08-30 Thread John Sessoms
Lot of people don't know that Hurricane Camille in 1969 killed more
people in Virginia than it killed along the Gulf coast. Almost all of it
from flash floods.

Nelson County VA got 27 inches of rain in 12 hours and had 123
fatalities; 1% of the local population killed in a single storm. It's
said it rained so hard that it drowned birds up in the trees.

From: Stan Halpin

I keep thinking of Agnes, 1972. Not much of a storm, but it just kept
pumping rain into the mid-atlantic states to as far north as the
southern Finger Lakes. My uncle (home builder) was overwhelmed with
work for the next two years in Cortland NY. Extensive flood damage,
entire neighborhoods wiped out. Virginia, WVa, Maryland, and
Pennsylvania all got it bad.

Interesting that we knew to expect more wind damage than water,
being on the eastern side of the storm. But there's minimal damage
to property, no flooding to speak of. Many neighboring towns are
still without power, and will be for days, but we only had a couple
of very brief interruptions yesterday. What surprised me most is
the toll that the storm took in Vermont. Major flooding, damage to
homes, towns, roadways, bridges... I'm not sure anyone expected
that extent of destruction up there, being an inland state
especially.

Today was as beautiful a day as we've had all summer, though.

Gee, that's good. Having the tour boat that close to the falls really
adds to the impact.

Very nice rendering. I agree with other comments about the close

Thanks - it makes an interesting comparison. To my (untrained) eye the
coyote seems to have a more wolf-like head.

Hi all

Thanks for the comments on this set and thanks to everyone who took a
look. I have to say that while I enjoyed the experience I have a
natural aversion to flying - my firm belief is that flying is an
unnatural act that is likely to end badly - the line "these things go
down" from the movie 'Midnight Run' comes to mind

I saw Arthus-Bertrand's exhibition 'Earth from Above' a few years ago in
Melbourne. Wonderful stuff. Here's a link if anyone isn't familiar

I suppose the last one doesn't really fit the theme of the gallery but
the shadow of the plane landing was an opportunity I couldn't pass up.
I like it, but it might have been better as a separate PESO.
