Thanks Frank, Mark C. and others who commented on this and/or the follow-on
attempts. In terms of process, I learned that more preparation & planning would
have been useful - I knew roughly where the moon would rise and how it would
fit into the pre-visualized composition. But I didn't know exactly enough to
really be ready in the "right" place. Second, my plan was still pretty good,
and I should have stuck with it and tried to make the best of the view I had
rather then moving around. My first position took into account various
intermediate "masks" that blocked view of some transmission towers. Every
subsequent move uncovered some of those towers.
As far as outcome, several of you have indicated preference for different ones
of those I posted. I totally agree; that is, I can't decide which I prefer at
this point. To make matters worse, one of you (to remain nameless unless he
wants to acknowledge his good work) took one of the shots into PS and did some
nice improvements to it. So I have that variation to consider as well.

Anyway, I am not sure I quite captured the shot I visualized but I have some
very nice harvest moon images to ponder and I think you all for your comments.

Re: Clever ways of storing and carrying light stands, tripods, etc?

2011-09-18 Thread Christine Nielsen
Agreed, but the painter's drop cloths I was thinking about aren't very
heavy. I've made slipcovers out of them before on my machine without
a problem.

All of which begs the question of whether it would be a worthwhile
endeavor in the first place, though. Might be better to go with a
heavier-duty canvas. Sounds like Larry's found a reasonable solution,
anyway. But still, it would be a fine idea if you had to make a
pencil case for a giant...

Lovely scene, terrible pun (though the picture absolutely needs those dogs).

I wouldn't know. I dance like a cow on roller skates. That's a 1964 film

Shakespeare's out of copyright, so nobody would get sued. On the other hand,
if the monkeys managed to reproduce the complete works of Jeffrey Archer
nobody would be surprised.

I'm jealous of that shot - I wish I'd taken it, so I'm going to make you
suffer instead.

A lovely Bachanalian scene, Frank, but I'm surprised she turned her Bach on
the audience. Shots like that are fugue and fah between. Not sure I'd have
been able to Handel it.

Was her Bach worse than their bite?

By coincidence, I saw Julian Lloyd Webber in the pub on Thursday evening.
He'd left his cello somewhere else though.

2011-09-18 Thread John Sessoms

From: Christine Nielsen

Not terribly clever, but when I'm not using them, I keep stands,
umbrellas & tripod in a (clean) trash can in a closet in my studio.
When I take them somewhere, they go into a duffle bag (an old-school
canvas hockey bag)... This system is easy-peasy, even for a slob like
me.

The wrench-roll wouldn't be at all difficult to make, though. If you
had access to a sewing machine, you could get a canvas drop cloth
from the hardware store... and go from there.

Standard home sewing machines generally won't handle heavy canvas.

Cardboard tubes, one for each umbrella, strapped together, with a grip at the

cardboard tube for the rods, throw the light adaptor it all hooks up to into a
general equipment box with your weight bags, bean bags, spare brackets,
extension cords, rope and clamps, etc.

You reminded me of the rolls that wrenches often come in, with pockets for each wrench.
I need something like that, but 60" long and about 45" wide, with somewhere

Re: Clever ways of storing and carrying light stands, tripods, etc?

2011-09-18 Thread John Sessoms

From: Larry Colen

I'm cleaning up after photographing a friend's party last night. As often happens, when
it came time to leave, things got "put away" in a manner much closer to
expediency than organization. This means that I have to pretty much unpack everything,
and put it away where it belongs.

The good news is that I have put together a fairly decent sized collection of
lighting stands, tripods etc. Unfortunately, I don't really have a good way of
storing and transporting them. I've been carrying the lighting stand,
umbrellas etc. in a (very) large duffel, but that's not very convenient when
I'm at home. I'm curious whether anybody has come up with some sort of a
brilliantly handy (and cheap) way of storing and carrying these things.

And for that matter, any other sort of camera gear beyond bodies and lenses.

I have Manfrotto tripod bags and a carrying bag made for light-stands.
Folded umbrellas go in the bag with the stands.

The few soft-boxes I own came with their own storage bags. Mostly I
leave the soft boxes assembled, ready to mount a strobe.

Re: Happy Constitution Day

Would you believe... we had a recitation of the Bill of RIghts at the
dinner table this very evening??

It all started with one of the girls asking a question about "pleading
the fifth"... and then their dad & I trying to recall what each of the
first 10 amendments were all about... We managed to get the gist of
half of them before resorting to google for help.

Which was very educational of us, I think.

However, I think we may need to revisit the original question... And
figure out why does she need to know about her right to not
incriminate herself...?

Unfortunately, for far too many people the whole thing boils down to a
single clause of one amendment.

For me, the most interesting amendment is the 27th. Originally proposed
as part of the original Bill of Rights on September 25, 1789, it was
finally ratified May 7, 1992 - 202 years 4 months later.

Of course, by then Congress had enacted (1989) the current AUTOMATIC
system of pay increases, so they don't have to vote to give themselves a
pay raise - essentially mooting the effect of the amendment.

Not reinventing the wheel when you don't have to can be very clever, or at
least wise.

You made me think of checking where I got the cheap lightstands, and they have
a couple of inexpensive bags:

Realistically, this might be the cheapest solution:
http://www.ephotoinc.com/photo-video-umbrellas-light-stand-tripod-carrying-bag1.html

http://www.ephotoinc.com/photo-umbrellas-light-stand-tripod-carrying-bag-b50.html

It's a bit smaller than yours, not as convenient, nor as well made, but at $23,
a couple of them could work very well.

I sent a query about this matter to Rich Stim, the IP lawyer who

Never heard of them until you mentioned it. Googled them.

I have Nik Color Efex Pro and can do most of what "Mystical Lighting"
and "Mystical Tint Tone Color" do.

Mystical Focus seems to be mostly funky "out of focus" effects. I have
enough trouble with those unintentionally coming out of the camera.

On the serious side, comparing prices between "Mystical Tint Tone Color"
and Nik Color Efex Pro, the Nik filters retail about $50 USD less.

Re: Clever ways of storing and carrying light stands, tripods etc?

2011-09-18 Thread Bruce Walker

If only life was so simple, Tim.

If you have even light falling equally on both subject and background,
the fastest glass will not find contrast to lift your subject from the
background and give the image life. So you can either darken your
background or add light to your subject, and the latter is usually
easier. Often all you need is a single off-axis strobe which not only
brightens your subject a stop or two, but also can add some defining
shadow to the subject.

Everybody should have a remote-able flash in their kit to play with.
It's a very (ahem) enlightening experience.

Before I got an extra large duffel bag from a camping store, I used to

Re: Clever ways of storing and carrying light stands, tripods etc?

2011-09-18 Thread Christine Nielsen
Not terribly clever, but when I'm not using them, I keep stands,
umbrellas & tripod in a (clean) trash can in a closet in my studio.
When I take them somewhere, they go into a duffle bag (an old-school
canvas hockey bag)... This system is easy-peasy, even for a slob like
me.

The wrench-roll wouldn't be at all difficult to make, though. If you
had access to a sewing machine, you could get a canvas drop cloth
from the hardware store... and go from there.

It's not very clever, but I bought a case made by Tenba just for the
purpose. It hold 2 light stands, a tripod, and a monopod and has a
zipper compartment for all the cords, pocket wizards and other misc.
There is a long divider that rolls out from the base so that you can
keep things from banging together and getting scratched.

I bought it a few years ago. This isn't the exact model, but it is similar.

That's a great gallery - especially 1316097972 and 1316097961 (with the

I particularly like the one of the 1957 Maserati driven by Jackie Stewart -
a
magnificent beast. And the car's not bad either.

Re: Clever ways of storing and carrying light stands, tripods etc?

2011-09-18 Thread Joseph McAllister
Velcro strap pairs connected by some webbing can tote several stands at a time
until the velcro gets too dirty to hold well.

For more stability a safety, a 3 foot dowel or 2x2 with a handle and four
velcro straps will carry 3 or 4 light stands.

Cardboard tubes, one for each umbrella, strapped together, with a grip at the
balance point. Boxes I'd make a heavy material bag to hold the cloth, a
cardboard tube for the rods, throw the light adaptor it all hooks up to into a
general equipment box with your weight bags, bean bags, spare brackets,
extension cords, rope and clamps, etc.

RE: PESO - Healing Vibrations

2011-09-18 Thread John Coyle

Thanks to all who responded, and I have read all the links that people sent - a
fascinating read!

I also polled the board of the organisation whose publication it is, and the
majority felt
that Times New Roman, fully-justified, was the best for legibility. One, who
also edits
several other journals, mentioned that some readers are asking for larger font
sizes, even
up to 12-pt. for body text. Don't think I'll go quite that far, though.

This list really is the most multi-talented - and a great source of information!

Get faster lenses, then you won't need that stuff. -T

I gave Godaddy the boot a while back. Good riddance. More due to the service
than any security concerns - they're a very big target and they take security
as seriously as anyone.

I've had to clean up a number of hacked sites on several different hosting
platforms. If you're using a content management system (eg Wordpress, Joomla
etc) you MUST keep it up to date. Otherwise it's just a matter of when.

Cheers,
Dave
