On my way home from what I'll euphemistically call lunch, it was lunch, perhaps
food is the euphemism, I noticed an old trailer parked in the back of what used
to be an RV lot in Scotts Valley. It may be older than I, was probably quite
the item when new, but now seems even more decrepit than I. In other words, a
photo opportunity that I couldn't resist. There is something that I find
strangely compelling about photographing things that have decayed from their
past glory.

Now that I've had a chance to look at the photos, I'm a bit disappointed. I
got a few nice ones, but none as nice as they looked through the viewfinder.
So, I'm actively soliciting feedback on what I should have done. Six photos,
two of the trailer, four detail shots.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157628213959037/
or
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157628213959037/

As an aside, due to a complete brainfart, the first photo I took was, according
to the camera, five stops underexposed at ISO 80. I hit auto tone on the
nearly black image in lightroom, and a surprisingly clean photo appeared.
Artistically, it was dreck, but for a photo shot at 1/4000 sec rather than
1/60, it was very sharp and noise free dreck.

I realized that I was driving past the trailer this evening right about dusk,
and had another go at it, keeping some of the suggestions in mind. The first
few were shot with the DA40, the others with the DFA 50 macro. I was amused
to think that I was photographing a thirty foot long trailer with a macro lens.
I think some of these shots are better than Tuesday's attempt.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157628242980457/
I liked the second bunch better than the first. Of the second bunch, I
like 35421 and 35444 best because of their composition. While the
composition of 35447 is pretty similar, I just think it looks like a
flatter image to my eye. There are others I like, too -- but those two
stand out.

Of the first bunch, I'd have to agree with those who said the first one
was the best of the set, and I agree that it could've been a better shot
on a more overcast day.

Wish I had more insight to offer, but that's taxing my critical
resources as it is.

In any event, I like the composition very much; especially the erect
neck, with the head almost, but not quite, in line with the neck, and
the shadow of the neck leading the bird. What really makes the shot
for me, however, is the symmetry of the wake, and how the wake lend a
feeling of motion and tempo to the shot.

In this situation, they would be a good source, since what the OP is
asking for is what will work with his camera. This is where a broad user
base that has bought and tried a wide variety of products comes in handy.
Also, it's pretty easy to weed out the posters who are spouting out

take a bit of reading to get a history.
The ones I am always suspicious of are the ones who test their

a test in such a way that only once metric is being tested at a time.

It's typical of a lot of U.S. vans from the late seventies, when vans
with airbrushed murals and shag rug interiors were the hot rods of
the day. I shot a few of them for mags like Custom Vans back in the
day. Most made little sense from an artistic or conceptual point of
view. They were the product of skilled but undereducated craftsmen.
The van owners held van events and formed clubs. Then, poof! They
were gone.

I think it has something to do with tattoo culture. That's what the
artwork looks like.

I remember all that. Those painted van clubs are still around still
hold events. Not as newsworthy perhaps as during their heyday.

What image ended up painted on individual vans reflected the van owner's

OT: In the market for an Imacon film scanner (by next summer)

2011-12-02 Thread Darren Addy
Getting this out there a little early, but I know that PDML-ers may
have connections...

If you know anyone that has an Imacon film scanner that they are
willing to part with, I am looking. Ideally, I will not be purchasing
it until next summer, but since these don't come on the market just
every day, I would like to know about anything available as you hear
about it.

*Please ping me off-list.

The one thing that is clear to me is that Imacons can be a bit of a
white elephant and the prices dropping fairly rapidly in the U.S.. I
think this is due to several factors:
• Apparently you now have to send them to the UK to get them serviced (ouch)
• Service can be expensive
• Imacons seem to be more of a Mac-compatible product (and older Macs, at that)
• The latest flatbed scanners, like the recent Canon and Epsons offer
darn-good quality for a fraction of the price and have none of the
weird connection issues of the Imacons

Still, for the right price, I think I'd like an Imacon over an
alternative. For one thing, I have a Mac that would work with it
already. My son-in-law could use it for his Pentax 6x7 negatives, and
I'm getting a 6x17 camera late this winter... so my need is not
immediate, but I would appreciate it if you happen to see one on your
local Craigslist, have one, or know of someone who is selling for
whatever reason. Thanks in advance!

Re: [All countries ] Street shooting and Image use (legal/rights) influence

2011-12-02 Thread Þráinn Vigfússon
Here in Iceland the laws are similar to most of Northern Europe (I
think). In general, you can take pictures in public spaces wherever you
want, but displaying them is another matter. You'll need consent from
all people that are prominent in your photographs with few exceptions,
most notably journalism.

In practice there is very little street photography done here, as the
market for photos of grim-faced pedestrians trying to hurry out of the
wind and rain (or snow) is rather limited. Leisurely shopping and
visiting coffee shops is done in shopping malls, which are privately
owned and generally don't allow photography.

I've read articles on Street Photography in England, where supposedly
photographers would rather take candid photographs of strangers on
beaches or along the seaside in the summer, because people were much
more relaxed there than in the cities. That pretty much sums it up for
my country as well.

practical point of view (I know that often things are permitted but
some zealot thinks you shouldn't be allowed to no matter what the law

* did the status of street shooting in your country change in recent
years (I'd say recent being last 15 years till today) ?
* would you say there's a tendency to restrict photographer's rights
in your country and why/how ?

This doesn't need to be huge answers, really. But if you have any

I just can't check legal status in 30 different countries myself, but

PESO with a GESO chaser - Hunchback of Notre-Dame

I had a good time watching my granddaughter's middle school play last
night. It was fun watching their version of the Hunchback of

bit of rhinoplasty.

I was sitting up high, in the back row, so I could get a fairly

It's typical of a lot of U.S. vans from the late seventies, when vans
with airbrushed murals and shag rug interiors were the hot rods of

What image ended up painted on individual vans reflected the van owner's

Hell, they left off a couple of versions of the Nikon mount, didn't
mention the Ricoh version of he K mount, nor the original K with no
electrical contacts nor the open aperture version of the M42 mount for
Pentax ES or SPF cameras, (there were also a couple of other open
aperture systems for other cameras using M42 lenses at least one of
which keeps them from mounting properly on Pentax K mount cameras with
M42-K adapter.

So not the list is not particularly inclusive.

Actually the FAJ and DA lenses lack the link to the Aperture Simulator,
(there I said it).

I didn't read all of the text, but I don't think they actually explained
the difference between the Canon Breach Lock system and Breach Lock
Bayonet system on the later FD lenses. An important issue if you happen
to find an early lens that you can't mount on your FD mount Canon.

There are aficionados scattered around the internet with reviews of
various K mount lenses, but a comprehensive listing. Not so much.
I've been working on reviews of the third party lenses in K mount that
I've used or owned and my opinions of them, but I'm far from finished.
Hum, I'll have to get back to that sometime. I also did a somewhat in
depth comparison of the Second and Third versions of VIvitar S1 70-210mm
lenses, that I think is available in the archives. Both are well worth
having. The third version since it was never released in an A version
is often available for less than $50.00 and gives very nice images even
on 14mp sensor cameras. It doesn't see a lot of use since I have the
Second version and a F 70-210 f4.0~5.6 both of which are much more
convenient to use.

In other words, a photo opportunity that I couldn't resist. There is

have decayed from their past glory.

Now that I've had a chance to look at the photos, I'm a bit disappointed.
I got a few nice ones, but none as nice as they looked through the

As an aside, due to a complete brainfart, the first photo I took was,
according to the camera, five stops underexposed at ISO 80. I hit auto
tone on the nearly black image in lightroom, and a surprisingly clean photo
appeared. Artistically, it was dreck, but for a photo shot at 1/4000 sec
rather than 1/60, it was very sharp and noise free dreck.
I realized that I was driving past the trailer this evening right about
dusk, and had another go at it, keeping some of the suggestions in mind.
The first few were shot with the DA40, the others with the DFA 50 macro. I
was amused to think that I was photographing a thirty foot long trailer with
a macro lens. I think some of these shots are better than Tuesday's attempt.

I liked the second bunch better than the first. Of the second bunch, I like
35421 and 35444 best because of their composition. While the composition of
35447 is pretty similar, I just think it looks like a flatter image to my
eye. There are others I like, too -- but those two stand out.

Of the first bunch, I'd have to agree with those who said the first one was
the best of the set, and I agree that it could've been a better shot on a
 more overcast day.

Wish I had more insight to offer, but that's taxing my critical resources as

My perspective on this is: If you use one brand of camera as we do, unless you
are a total newbie, you already know the Pentax system, and either have or know
where you can find out. The PDML is where you would go to find out that you
should go to http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/ for descriptions and drawings of
the various lens mounts through Pentax history.

These are useless unless someone gives you a lens that they, and you, have no
idea what it might fit. So tuck the URLs away somewhere in your browser, and
get on with it.

Though the colors may be scientifically correct, I don't know if they are or
not, they are not the way the average eye would see this theme. Our minds adapt
what we see in nature to be closer to what the average color of that item is
from our experience.

I would back off on the saturation, at least, and perhaps eliminate some of the
magenta overtones. Even though after sunset, the lakeside colors of the posts
should still be a shade of grey, not magenta. The far shore probably did look a
bit magenta, but not that much. I tried to do it down and dirty in the Mac OS
Preview but was unsuccessful. Not enough control. So I gave up rather than
post a more correct but not correct version for everyone to pile on.

It's a good photo, mind you. Ken's framing idea would add to it, of course.
I've seen some sunsets from the Canadian shores of Lake Superior, and from
Saint Joseph. Ken, does it look this way since the air is 20% more polluted

In the old PPG, you could update the image through the edit function,
even after it had been accepted in the gallery. I did that with one
image when I notice a bit of noise that I had taken out in one
version, but not in the one I first submitted. The revised image did
not replace the original one, however, until it was approved by
Pentax.

I may try to clean one or two of my older entries that have been resized by PPG.

SESO, warning signs, third try

2011-12-02 Thread Larry Colen
The test went out fine. Let's try this one more time.

Anyone who has driven Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz from San Jose has probably noticed
Casa Del 17 just past the summit. On my way to buy a generator I got a call
(that power was back on at the house and I could postpone an $800 expenditure)
and pulled over to talk on the phone. I had never actually looked at a couple
of signs out in front, one next to a port-a-san that they provide for travelers
to use (rather than their flowerbeds I suspect). These photos are nearly
without artistic merit, but the signs are worth a chuckle:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/6444289873/
closeup of the second sign
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/6444289201/

The rest of the set is mostly snapshots of the totem poles they have. The
owners seem to be Korean, so I suspect that they are the Korean equivalent of
totem poles, either that or they just sunk telephone poles in the ground to
protect the parking lot from errant cars on 17, and then subsequently decorated
them. Some time I'll need to go back in better light and do some proper
portraits of the totem poles.

As to the name, about an hour South East of here is a tourist stop / campground
called Casa de Fruita, I suspect that they thought they could capitalize on
people recognizing that name.

I also noticed another business on the property that had never caught my
attention before. For some reason, the signage amused me

I had a good time watching my granddaughter's middle school play last
night. It was fun watching their version of the Hunchback of
Notre-Dame. The Hunchback's nose fell off in the middle of the second
act and they had to take a short break before the next scene to do a
bit of rhinoplasty.

I was sitting up high, in the back row, so I could get a fairly
unobstructed view of the stage. I also got a great view of everyone's

CC fire away.

Though the colors may be scientifically correct, I don't know if they are
or not, they are not the way the average eye would see this theme. Our
minds adapt what we see in nature to be closer to what the average color
of that item is from our experience.

I would back off on the saturation, at least, and perhaps eliminate some
of the magenta overtones. Even though after sunset, the lakeside colors of
the posts should still be a shade of grey, not magenta. The far shore
probably did look a bit magenta, but not that much. I tried to do it down
and dirty in the Mac OS Preview but was unsuccessful. Not enough
control. So I gave up rather than post a more correct but not correct
version for everyone to pile on.

It's a good photo, mind you. Ken's framing idea would add to it, of
course. I've seen some sunsets from the Canadian shores of Lake Superior,
and from Saint Joseph. Ken, does it look this way since the air is 20%
more polluted globally?

Could be. From my experience this scene could be as captured, only Don knows
for sure.

RE: SESO, warning signs, third try

2011-12-02 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
What's a SESO?

That looks like a fun place. Those photos are quite humorous.

I'd like to think, though, that God has better things to do than visit wrath
upon those who dirty their toilet. Perhaps He could stop the European economy
from melting down, dragging the rest of the world economy into yet another
recession? How about ending a few of the wars and armed struggles going on
around the world? How about saving a starving baby in sub-Sahara Africa?

Nah, better to guard that loo... :-)

cheers,
frank

I tried sending an email with links to photos of some amusing warning signs,
but don't see any evidence of them having gone out,

So I'm trying this test message.

FESO - Nik Color Efex Pro

2011-12-02 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all

If Larry can introduce a new acronym, I guess I can too.

FESO = Freebie Every So Often

Until 5 Dec, the German magazine CHIP.de has a free download of Nik
Color Efex Pro (Version 3 Standard Edition). This is the stand alone
version (not the Photoshop plug-in) and it's somewhat limited in
comparison with the 'Select' and 'Complete' editions of the software.
Still, it might prove useful..

Details on how to download and activate the software are here:

http://dottech.org/freebies/24743/free-nik-softwares-color-efex-pro-3-0-standard-limited-time-offer/

Although it's a German promotion, you can install it in either German or
English.

Cheers

Brian
