It may be older than I, was probably quite the item when new, but now seems even more decrepit than I. In other words, a photo opportunity that I couldn't resist. There is something that I find strangely compelling about photographing things that have decayed from their past glory. Now that I've had a chance to look at the photos, I'm a bit disappointed. I got a few nice ones, but none as nice as they looked through the viewfinder. So, I'm actively soliciting feedback on what I should have done. Six photos, two of the trailer, four detail shots. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157628213959037/ or http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157628213959037/ As an aside, due to a complete brainfart, the first photo I took was, according to the camera, five stops underexposed at ISO 80. I hit auto tone on the nearly black image in lightroom, and a surprisingly clean photo appeared. Artistically, it was dreck, but for a photo shot at 1/4000 sec rather than 1/60, it was very sharp and noise free dreck. I realized that I was driving past the trailer this evening right about dusk, and had another go at it, keeping some of the suggestions in mind. The first few were shot with the DA40, the others with the DFA 50 macro. I was amused to think that I was photographing a thirty foot long trailer with a macro lens. I think some of these shots are better than Tuesday's attempt. http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157628242980457/ I liked the second bunch better than the first. Of the second bunch, I like 35421 and 35444 best because of their composition. While the composition of 35447 is pretty similar, I just think it looks like a flatter image to my eye. There are others I like, too -- but those two stand out. Of the first bunch, I'd have to agree with those who said the first one was the best of the set, and I agree that it could've been a better shot on a more overcast day. Wish I had more insight to offer, but that's taxing my critical resources as it is. -- Walt -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

PESO - Trumpeter
Most (over 90% I'm sure) of the swans around our area are muted swans, but once in a while we see trumpeters, which this fellow is: http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.com/2011/11/trumpeter.html Every trumpeter I've seen has been tagged, as this one is, just below his right wing. Re: PESO - Trumpeter
I also like this image a lot Frank. Have we seen it (or something similar) before? In any event, I like the composition very much; especially the erect neck, with the head almost, but not quite, in line with the neck, and the shadow of the neck leading the bird. What really makes the shot for me, however, is the symmetry of the wake, and how the wake lend a feeling of motion and tempo to the shot. Re: PESO - Why I'm Not a Van Guy
From: Paul Stenquist It's typical of a lot of U.S. vans from the late seventies, when vans with airbrushed murals and shag rug interiors were the hot rods of the day. I shot a few of them for mags like Custom Vans back in the day. Most made little sense from an artistic or conceptual point of view. They were the product of skilled but undereducated craftsmen. The van owners held van events and formed clubs. Then, poof! They were gone. Darren Addy Kearney, Nebraska I think it has something to do with tattoo culture. That's what the artwork looks like. I remember all that. Those painted van clubs are still around still hold events. Not as newsworthy perhaps as during their heyday. What image ended up painted on individual vans reflected the van owner's other interests (to the extent it was not limited by the painter's ability). OT: In the market for an Imacon film scanner (by next summer)
Getting this out there a little early, but I know that PDML-ers may have connections... If you know anyone that has an Imacon film scanner that they are willing to part with, I am looking. Ideally, I will not be purchasing it until next summer, but since these don't come on the market just every day, I would like to know about anything available as you hear about it. *Please ping me off-list. The one thing that is clear to me is that Imacons can be a bit of a white elephant and the prices dropping fairly rapidly in the U.S.. I think this is due to several factors: • Apparently you now have to send them to the UK to get them serviced (ouch) • Service can be expensive • Imacons seem to be more of a Mac-compatible product (and older Macs, at that) • The latest flatbed scanners, like the recent Canon and Epsons offer darn-good quality for a fraction of the price and have none of the weird connection issues of the Imacons Still, for the right price, I think I'd like an Imacon over an alternative. For one thing, I have a Mac that would work with it already. My son-in-law could use it for his Pentax 6x7 negatives, and I'm getting a 6x17 camera late this winter... so my need is not immediate, but I would appreciate it if you happen to see one on your local Craigslist, have one, or know of someone who is selling for whatever reason. Re: [All countries ] Street shooting and Image use (legal/rights) influence
Here in Iceland the laws are similar to most of Northern Europe (I think). In general, you can take pictures in public spaces wherever you want, but displaying them is another matter. You'll need consent from all people that are prominent in your photographs with few exceptions, most notably journalism. In practice there is very little street photography done here, as the market for photos of grim-faced pedestrians trying to hurry out of the wind and rain (or snow) is rather limited. Leisurely shopping and visiting coffee shops is done in shopping malls, which are privately owned and generally don't allow photography. I've read articles on Street Photography in England, where supposedly photographers would rather take candid photographs of strangers on beaches or along the seaside in the summer, because people were much more relaxed there than in the cities. That pretty much sums it up for my country as well. Thrainn Þann 29.11.2011 18:06, skrifaði Thibouille: The teacher asked to do some work about a legal issue concerning legal rights of photographs use. As he showed us a couple short movies on the topic and because I believe that street shooting is indeed a fundamental of photography, I'd like to know: * the status of street shooting in your country, both on a legal and a practical point of view (I know that often things are permitted but some zealot thinks you shouldn't be allowed to no matter what the law is) ? * did the status of street shooting in your country change in recent years (I'd say recent being last 15 years till today) ? * would you say there's a tendency to restrict photographer's rights in your country and why/how ? This doesn't need to be huge answers, really. But if you have any legal reference in your mind, please do so :) I just can't check legal status in 30 different countries myself, but I'm very interested (and somewhat concerned) about this. PESO with a GESO chaser - Hunchback of Notre-Dame
I had a good time watching my granddaughter's middle school play last night. It was fun watching their version of the Hunchback of Notre-Dame. The Hunchback's nose fell off in the middle of the second act and they had to take a short break before the next scene to do a bit of rhinoplasty. I was sitting up high, in the back row, so I could get a fairly unobstructed view of the stage. I also got a great view of everyone's smartphone, digital camera, and this guy in the front row taking pictures with his iPad. iPad guy: http://www.georgesphotos.net/Events/Kates-School-Play-2011/i-fWpbnDR/0/M/20111201d300s5053-M.jpg A few photos of the play: http://www.georgesphotos.net/Events/Kates-School-Play-2011/20383905_6CZzfL GS George Sinos gsi...@gmail.com www.georgesphotos.net plus.georgesinos.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: OT: KEH blog, Lens Mount Guide
My perspective on this is: If you use one brand of camera as we do, unless you are a total newbie, you already know the Pentax system, and either have or know where you can find out. The PDML is where you would go to find out that you should go to http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/ for descriptions and drawings of the various lens mounts through Pentax history. These are useless unless someone gives you a lens that they, and you, have no idea what it might fit. So tuck the URLs away somewhere in your browser, and get on with it. In the old PPG, you could update the image through the edit function, even after it had been accepted in the gallery. I did that with one image when I notice a bit of noise that I had taken out in one version, but not in the one I first submitted. The revised image did not replace the original one, however, until it was approved by Pentax. I may try to clean one or two of my older entries that have been resized by PPG.
