I think you took too much off the top. I much preferred the
composition with the feather closer to the left edge. On the left,
I'd leave just a little space past the knuckle. On the top you
could crop it square, you could crop it just below the lights at
the top (which didn't bother me, and they kind of frame the
picture), and/or you could burn in the lights a the top a bit, so
make them a little darker so they don't stand out quite so much.

Or you can just go with what looks good to you because no matter
what you do, some people will like it more, others less.

I sort of liked the original crop a little better, too -- and agree
with the lighter area at the top helping to frame the image a bit
and break up the negative space. I'll see what I can do with a
square crop, but don't know how that would look in a book if it were
actually published.

Well, if you only submit one photo it is guaranteed to be published :-)>

I agree with Larry that the re-crop is a bit too much. A bit off the
top (just below that light 'blob') and a tad off the right is how I
would do it. But - what works for you is the main thing.

imo it's very rare that a so-called designer ever produces anything other
than hideous crap. There are few exceptions - the Porsche-designed Contax
RTS being what. What they do is not design, but styling. Since form follows
function it requires a real designer to design the camera in the first
place, based around fit, usability and so on. If they do the job right the
camera comes out beautiful and doesn't need a stylist. Bringing in a stylist
smacks of desperation and a camera designed by marketers, not by camera
makers.

It was shot with my K-x using the K-50/1.4 -- beyond that, I haven't the
foggiest clue as to the technical deets. My guess is that the aperture
is set at f/2 and the ISO would probably be somewhere in the
neighborhood of 1600 given the conditions (sitting in a dimly lit bar),
not using flash (I'm constitutionally incapable most times), with a
fairly slow shutter speed (1/50 or thereabouts).

In any event, I'm looking for possible submissions to the PDML annual

Thank you, Frank!

I was actually able to find the EXIF data and discovered that it was a
1/90 sec. exposure at ISO 400. Apparently, it was still daytime and I
had plenty of light to work with when I took the photo.

That's a great image, Frank.

The language on the monument is remarkable in itself: "Glorious
Dead"! Of course, the juxtaposition with the person on the sidewalk
is powerful, and then the walker ignoring both really completes it.

Thanks, I just saw that story on the news. The footage is always
enjoyable to watch. Here's some extended commentary from Cornell's
eBird project (which collects bird observations from birders):

http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/the-winter-of-the-snowy-owl

As the eBird story notes, here in the Northeast, the winter of
2008-2009 was better than this year so far. In February 2009, we were
very lucky and had two of them here in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. I
got to see both of them. My photographs are very much like Darren's:
One on a telephone pole, and one flying away:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/coneslayer/327932/lightbox/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/coneslayer/3279180339/lightbox/

When my wife and I got to the site where the first one was hanging
around, we stood under the telephone pole, oblivious to the owl,
scanning every furrow of the fields with our binoculars, looking for
the bird. Another birder drove up, got out of his car, and asked us
what we saw. He thought it must have been something remarkable for us
to be ignoring the Snowy Owl above our heads.

The poor bird who made it to Hawaii this year (their first ever) was
shot dead as a hazard to aircraft.

That's assuming it works with them, of course. IIRC, Pentax released
at least one low-end body that just plain didn't work with anything
earlier than a KA-mount (and wouldn't let you use the aperture ring
on the lens either).

While it looks as though my fears that this might be limited to using
SDM lenses were unfounded, I'm not sure that means M42 or plain K-mount
lenses will be supported. Time will tell.

If they are going to do a mirrorless and want to put a finder on it,

For myself, after experiencing the Q, no integral finder, I'm not a

Two days ago people were complaining about how small the image in the

that too. :-)

But I'd throw some optics in so you could make it shallower and get some
diopter adjustment in the process.

While we're at it, I'd also like a 45 degree mirror so I could use it
like a waist level viewfinder.

Re: GESO: At the track

2012-02-01 Thread Christine Nielsen
Thanks, Don.

Yes, I've heard that as well about sports photogs... I'm guessing they
usually have tons of photos to weed through, and in a short amount of
time, so jpegs make sense.

I'd also guess there's a certain amount of confidence that's required
for shooting jpegs as a pro. I had a well-regarded instructor at New
England School of Photography who did weddings & events
occasionally... and he always shot jpegs, and would download the
images onto a cd for the client before he left. I imagine that most
wedding photogs would be loath to do business that way, for several
reasons, but he was just that confident in his ability to get it right
"in camera"...

Ah well, it won't be long 'til baseball season... it was 60 degrees in
Boston this Feb 1...!

Well... at the risk of appearing unreasonable... When I pixel-peep at
these images, and look at the faces in particular, the noise gets
bothersome... I just wonder how much better a FF sensor would be at
resolving those little details at the same ISO... Or if it would have
helped at all to shoot them as DNGs... Not that I'm all that bothered

It's tricky to make the crystals look really glassy and transparent,
and yet display a bit of colour. This is one of the best I got today.

It seems that for each bout of snowy weather, there's a particular
type of... well, architecture... that dominates. This time there were
long stems with almost fern-like branching and pointy ends. Wish I had

Nothing particularly special.

Stitched in PS, layer masked curves adjustment layer to bring out the

PESO- The Trestle

2012-02-01 Thread Brian Walters

G'day all

I was sorting though some of the back catalogue (I always like that
term - it sounds impressive even if the contents aren't) looking for
railway-themed images for the February PUG.

I came across this one from 2006. The front part of the bridge has
been cut down to cater for large trucks on the nearby main road. It
must have been something to see trains passing over the high trestle
when the line was operating. It closed in 1987.

I'm not using it in the PUG so I thought I'd PESO it.

Comments, suggestions, criticisms all welcome.

Well, it looks ugly with that 40 mm but will probably look better with

GESO: At the track

2012-02-01 Thread Don Guthrie
Christine. I think these look great. I did not get a chance to comment
on your hockey pictures but liked them also.

As to jpegs it is my understanding that most pro sports photogs use jpg
for their action shots. I know the Scotts (Bourne & Kelby) advocate this.

I can't wait for local baseball season to get my sorts thing going.

So... as a follow-up to the other day's hockey pics, I thought I'd
share some I did the weekend before, at an indoor track meet.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/23028562@N04/sets/72157629116216583/with/6796372073/

Conditions weren't as chilly, but definitely dimmer, and with
faster-moving subjects. I kept the K-5 at 16,000 ISO most of the day.
Which is starting to push the limit, at least when you peep... I'll
also mention that I shot these as jpegs - unintentionally. (D'oh!) I
wonder how that might have limited these images...not that it matters
much to their fb audience...

But still, it does get one thinking about what difference ff would
make in this situation... especially with the uptick in recent chatter

That new 40 looks like it protrudes out the rear far enough that it
could ONLY be used on a mirrorless camera (that's one thing mirrorless
allows you to do). If you can't use it on your mirrored DSLRs its

If the price point is right and it's a K5 sensor that it might be
quite a deal. It doesn't look like there is an EVF, which would be
bad for long lenses. I think that new 40 might get all the press.

Thanks, Paul. It's funny that you use the word "intensity"... these
kids like to say that they "Focus on their focus & are intense about

of intense, I'll mention the kid wearing #5 is my son... lol.

It's also funny -- I had the camera set to jpeg from my class the day
before, and just forgot to switch it. When I realized what I had
done, I figured I had really messed up the wb, since the light in
there was so... whack. It wasn't catastrophic, though... and in the
end, it was a pretty quick edit of 250+ pics. We RAW shooters probably
too often forget the merits of shooting jpegs...

I find jpegs work fine for most subjects, although I rarely shoot that

midrange, the whites, and the blacks when rendering finals.
