Re: What Bugs Me Most about the K-01 Aesthetics

2012-02-11 Thread P. J. Alling
Here's an experiment, take your K5 mount a 200mm or longer lens on it
put it into live view hold it at arms length and take a few pictures.
Then try a 300mm. Compare your results to using the eye level view
finder. Don't tell me you always use a tripod with long lenses. I know
you'd be fibbin'. If you use a monopod the issue is worse. It will be
just impossible to use one properly.

aside from the lack of a viewfinder we know it will preform like a K5. If
it had a decent EVF it would be worthy of consideration as a complementary
body used with a K5 or K7. We know, more or less, that long lenses used

it's aesthetics.

The K-01 label mixes two type styles, and what's up with the goofy 'K'?

I'm more bothered by it looking like a pile of Lego blocks...

LR3 is 50% off from Adobe until March 5th, which probably indicates
that LR4 will be released for real around that time.
The previous upgrade from 2 to 3 was $99, so if you buy LR3 now,
you'll want to compare the retail price for LR4 to the price of LR3
plus the upgrade. (there is no guarantee that it will be $99 again, of
course).

There's a very simple fix for that: in Photoshop (or Gimp, etc.)
squeeze the image's width (only width!) by about 3%. Ie: unlock the
keep aspect ratio option in the resize or use Free Transform.

Instant weight loss. Works wonders!

While we've had a relative mild winter, with little snow warmer than
normal temps, last week I was up north on the Leelenau Peninsula in
the northern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan happened upon a
group of perhaps 15 or so ice racers on Lake Leelenau, with enough ice
form them to maneuver - they were having a blast.

This particular image is of a DN class ice boat its owner chillin on

That's a great shot, Kenneth. It's certainly a bracing one for those of
us in the warmer climes of the mid-south. We've had a relatively mild
winter, too. We only see frozen lakes during the harsh ones. And we
don't dare park our asses on 'em in a lounge chair when we do!

It's designed as a retro styled box. On a box the LCD screen
could/should be on top. This would allow the user to hold the box at
waist level. The popup flash should be replaced with a popup viewer
like the old voigtlanders and lubitels
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voigtlander_Brillant

It would solve lots of problems. My knees would love it, macroshots
are much easier, holding the cam above my head would be very easy and
working on a tripod would be big pleasure.

Now *here's* an idea for a K-01 accessory add-on for those who want to
go really retro:
An attachment that fits onto the rear LCD with a 45-degree mirror that
reflects the LCD image up onto a horizontal ground glass screen! You'd
get that TLR-style reversed image while framing shots with the camera
at waist level!

If any of you actually makes this device I want a share of the

graduation gets closer and she begins to feel nostalgic to get a
decent one. ;-) Truly, no one knows better than me how inadequate
that shot it.

It appears to me it was shot up close using a wide angle lens distorting her
 features.

She's an attractive young lady, and while the photo seems technically
accomplished (other than the distracting textile object behind her), it does
 not flatter her.

There's a very simple fix for that: in Photoshop (or Gimp, etc.)
squeeze the image's width (only width!) by about 3%. Ie: unlock the
keep aspect ratio option in the resize or use Free Transform.

 Instant weight loss. Works wonders!

A wonderful example of why ebay shouldn't allow HTML in descriptions.

Don't lose heart! They might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a

I enjoy watching glass blowers.  We've been to three glass blowing studios in
the past few months and not one of them had staff working there at the time.
One had their furnace shut down for maintenance and I think we visited both
 of the others at weekends.

 Cheers,
 Dave

I think I was expecting that

Interesting shapes. The small one at top left looks a bit like a crown.

Re: PESO - Snow on Lakeshore

2012-02-11 Thread Brian Walters

Quoting frank theriault knarftheria...@gmail.com:

Hopefully you're not getting tired of all these streetcar photos, but
I like streetcars, so there! ;-)

Not at all. Two things that I'm not likely to see here are snow and
streetcars (trams as we call them). At one stage Sydney had one of
the largest tram networks in the world but in the 1950s the
politicians decided that buses were the future and ripped the entire
system up.

We now have a small and relatively new light rail line to the inner
western suburbs and there is continual talk of reinstating trams to
the centre of Sydney, but I'm not holding my breath.

We had a light snow a couple of weeks ago (now all melted) and I
thought the Long Branch Car looked kind of nice heading through it:

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Nice wintery feel to that, enhanced by the graininess of the image.
