The only question that strikes me is the subdued red of the blackbird's

Female Red-winged Blackbirds are totally different looking--brown and
streaked, quite sparrow-looking.

I don't think the red in the photo is excessively subdued. It may be
washed out a bit from specular reflection of sunlight.

I think Matthew must have the explanation, as the other shots I got of

Re: GESO: Probably my best photowalk to date

2012-04-05 Thread Walt Gilbert

Thank you, David.

I tried a slightly tighter crop on the bird photo, but the bokeh from
that lens takes on a mottled look at lower apertures, so I thought it
best to sacrifice the detail in favor of the broader scene. As for the
horse shot, I tried getting a narrower aperture setting to get more DOF,
but they were inquisitive horses, so they both tended to converge toward
the center of the frame, blocking out the background as I tried to set
it up. That was the only "clean" shot I got out of about five attempts.

Thanks again!

Nah, the Promaster is an AF. I've had pretty good luck with my Tokina
28-200 MF zoom, but lately it's a really heavy lens compared to the
70-300, and it's developed a wobble somewhere it its construction that I
can feel when I support the focusing ring. So, I'm afraid to use it too
much until I can figure out what's happening and maybe try to snug it
up. But, it's a rather old, beaten up lens that probably wouldn't be
worth the cost to have fixed by anyone who knows what they're doing.

It's a shame, too. I really like that lens. Best $20 I ever spent.

The light wood box on the left is the Perelman Theater, a chamber music and

Re: focus-tuning followup

2012-04-05 Thread George Sinos
Dave -

that's one of the interesting things I learned in the articles on
focusing systems. Contrast-detection focusing has to hunt. It works
by iteratively sending a signal to the lens and measuring the
results. It doesn't even know which way the lens is off the mark. It
tries something, checks to see if the result is better, then tries
again. Eventually it narrows in on the correct result.

Well, if they end up making a profit off the Q and the K-01, I don't
suppose it's a waste of money, although neither of them fits my needs.

I've been sort of aiming towards the "K-3" being my next Pentax camera,
whether it's FF or not. I'm not willing to pay $3K for another APS-C
body, but I would for full frame. It would hurt, but I'd do it.

At that point I'd just sell all my Pentax gear, buy a D800/E and start
over. Watch everyone complain if/when there's a Pentax FF that now all
the money they spent on the APS-C lenses reduces the resolution when
put on a FF body. Many will have to buy new lenses, so at that point,
why Pentax?

Pentax has taken too long for me to conceivably buy into a FF system
from them. Even a $2000 body at 24MP would make me think long and hard
on spending on Pentax vs. taking my business elsewhere.

Yeah, a big investment in APS-C lenses would be a problem, but mostly
I've been getting by using film lenses. The only APS-C lenses I have are
the 18-55 kit lens that came with the K-20D & a couple of Sigmas (30mm
f/1.4 & 10-20 zoom).

I just got the demo cam from the local distributor/dealer: here's some

I went straight to ISO25600 with the lens I happen to have with me (an
old FA 28-105; the demo did not come with a lens).

GESO: Probably my best photowalk to date

2012-04-05 Thread John Sessoms

From: Walt Gilbert

Hi all,

I took the K20D and K-x out again this morning, around 8:00 with the
intent of taking photos of my neighbor training his horse.
Unfortunately, it was the horse's off-day -- so he'll be running
tomorrow morning (weather permitting).

Rather than let the light go to waste, I went ahead and took a
photowalk, and I'm really glad I did. I don't think I've ever had a day
with so many opportunities.

Same configuration as last time: K20D with the A 50/1.7 and K-x with the
Promaster 70-300 f/4-5.6. All of the images with file names containing
IMGP are shot with the K-x and the ones containing _WJG were shot with
the K20D. I'm growing more impressed with that 70-300 all the time.

About 31 images in the gallery, but it's on Flickriver, so it's not
quite so tedious to go through 'em.

Comments, critiques and suggestions are, as always, eagerly solicited.

Thanks!

I'm inspired. I was going to try to do some work around the house today,
but after seeing your photos of wild turkeys I think I'll walk downtown
and see if there's anyone around the legislature building.

I liked the red-wing blackbird too. I never see any around here.

I'm glad I could serve as some inspiration. But, if you being around the
legislature inspires you to go on a Wild Turkey bender, I cannot be held
responsible for whatever occurs thereafter. As for the red-wing, this

Also true. I usually time my photowalks to coincide with sunsets for
that reason, since the light tends to improve as you go. There just
doesn't seem to be as much activity at that time of day. Of course,
yesterday could've been a complete fluke, too.

Subject: GESO: Probably my best photowalk to date

About 31 images in the gallery, but it's on Flickriver, so it's not
quite so tedious to go through 'em.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157629376932926/

Comments, critiques and suggestions are, as always, eagerly solicited.

Thanks!

Very interesting. I don't see exposure compensation as being needed in manual
mode myself because I'll be taking a test shot and checking the histogram
anyways. There are so many ways a scalar meter can be fooled, it's best to
check the histogram anyways. Especially something like a flower that can have a
lot of luminance on only one channel.

What I'm most interested in hearing about is general usability. Also, how easy
is it to carry in a coat or cargo pocket with a 40mm lens. And for me, how
well does manual focus work in low light situations. If low light sensitivity
and noise is on par with the K-05, then it meets my minimum requirements. For
that matter, even the K-x and K-r are up to usable performance in that regard.

Bong's example at 25,600 is promising in that regard.

2012-04-05 Thread jn289

Walt, I like 22-14, 27-19 the BEST, and 32-25..Very nice Walt...Joe

I don't think I've ever had a
day with so many opportunities.

Same configuration as last time: K20D with the A 50/1.7 and K-x with
the Promaster 70-300 f/4-5.6. All of the images with file names
containing IMGP are shot with the K-x and the ones containing _WJG
were shot with the K20D. I'm growing more impressed with that 70-300
all the time.

About 31 images in the gallery, but it's on Flickriver, so it's not
quite so tedious to go through 'em.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157629376932926/

Comments, critiques and suggestions are, as always, eagerly solicited.

Thanks!

I won't try to defend this price increase, as i don't know Pentax' cost
structure, but I would wager that their new Ricoh masters took a look at their
costs and P/L before deciding to make this move. If you look at Ricoh's
existing product prices you see that they price for a niche market, and Pentax
has been drifting in that direction for years.

That said, if you enjoy reading posters frothing at the mouth (pen?) and having
a hissy fit over this issue, take a gander at the Pentax DSLR Forum on DPR…

Re: Time for eye protection

2012-04-05 Thread Igor Roshchin

I am sure many PDMLers would disagree with me. I might disagree myself.
But I would like to suggest that one should look at this image differently:
It is not a documentary/landscape photo. It is a different genre.
It is probably not even just a photo (as a genre).

Quite often you can see some paintings in a similar "HDR"-like style.
A good examples is the paintings of La Boca, the neighborhood of
Buenos Aires where Tango started.
People create images (based on photos) of that area in a similar style,
see, e.g. here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Buenos_Aires_-_La_Boca_-_Caminito_-_200807i.jpg
and here:
http://goo.gl/ZhZVe

The interesting thing to me is that almost nobody who responded on this
thread has actually said what was wrong with the image in question.
I guess the assumption is just because it is not natural. It is a
philosophical question is whether the art has to be realistic.

It reminds me how people had criticized the new, non-orthodox styles
in fine arts (e.g. impressionists, abstractionists, etc.).

:-)

Cheers,

Igor

2012-04-05 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

It is Friday here :-). So here goes:

For sale: Pentax K-7:

* Katz Eye (not optibrite, but regular) *shimmed* (*) screen without any
markings

* O-ME53 viewfinder magnifier
* Original viewfinder ocular
* Original focusing screen
* (Optional at no extra charge): 3rd party battery grip with rather worn
markings but fully operational otherwise

(*) There is a small mark on the screen (on the top part of the split
screen section) that does not seem to affect anything in any way. The
screen has no markings whatsoever except, naturally, the focusing aids.

PayPal fees (I think it will be order of 5% in my case). Shipping will
be done (included in the cost) by EMS with full insurance at face value.

If you're interested please contact me off the list.

Thanks.

you're steering dangerously close to the Van Gogh Fallacy there Igor. "Van
Gogh never sold a painting and yet he's now considered a genius. I've never
sold a painting, therefore I must be a genius".

You're right that it might, in theory, be some new genre that we are too
stupid to recognise. But in practice it's not, it's just shit.

An interesting comparison. The first image looks, on first glance, to
be oversaturated but the vegetation clearly is not. So maybe the post
processor did it selectively if it is not realistic. The second image
looks to have either a mild dose of veiling flare (not suprising
considering the conditions) or have suffered some mishap during post.
What you _can_ see of the house colours suggests they are, indeed, vivid.
