Re: the long, long wait for my k-5

2012-07-23 Thread Paul Stenquist
John is right. Renting a camera is just a normal business expense, so it' a
deduction from gross income, and I recoup only the percentage that goes on
taxes. i still have about 16 days to go until I leave for that 3-day shoot, so
I hope to have the body. Shooting a vintage race at Willow Springs and the
Concours of America next weekend, so the K7 will probably have to answer the
call for those.

Here is my take, Larry. I think that this is what Pentax should have
done instead of Q and K-01. Granted there is a problem of screw driven
AF compatibility, but this camera from Canon makes much more sense to
me, and if I were a Canon shooter, I might seriously consider it. At
the very least iy is possible to imagine what would bee the next camera
in this series...

I guess the Economist pays by the word.

The facts in the entire article could easily have been expressed in
maybe one quarter of the space.

Maybe I was pre-conditioned to dislike the example by the pretentious
use of "your correspondent" where "I" would have sufficed - it was a
twee affectation when it was done in the gossip columns of 50 years
ago, when it at least had the excuse of protecting the identity of the
pseudonymous authors.

2012-07-23 Thread Bruce Walker
John, I was going to chide you for being too fussy about the Your
Correspondent thing, but then I hit this in the very first paragraph
...

"True, digital single-lens reflex (D-SLR) cameras can be switched to
give a modicum of manual control, while letting the user see a pretty
good visualisation of the image that is about to be recorded. But your
correspondent always feels the manual experience with a D-SLR is
artificial—as if the device is providing a mere semblance of control
filtered through simulation circuitry."

WTF? What in hell is he talking about? Certainly not any dSLR I know
about. And citing "D-SLR" as if it's in common usage -- yikes.

Hit the x and move on. Nothing to see here.

I always preferred the editorial "we".

I agree with Boris. Pentax had more lens compatibility issues because
of the screw drive, but the Canon is nice small camera. I'm a bit
surprised there is no option for a clip on EVF, but the record has
largely shown that the the lack of an EVF is just not a big issue
sales-wise. The larger sensor is far more important. They'll sell a
bunch of these.

Re: PESO Red means go

2012-07-23 Thread kwaller
In the late 60's & early 70's, I shot alot of F1 & Can Am cars at Moss's
corner - hand held with high speed ektachrome, sometimes pushed, with a
Spotmatic and a 200 or 300 mm Takumar lens, pre focused, and was lucky if I
got 6 keepers out of a roll of 36!

Subject: Re: PESO Red means go

The cars were hauling ass coming straight toward me entering the
hairpin turn then heading camera-left. These two cars were likely
about 3-4 car lengths apart so the lead car was already heading left
fast while the trailing car was still pointed straight toward me.

My shutter speed was kinda low: 1/160th. My back-of-envelope estimate
suggests that at 1/160th of a second, the lead car would move about
2.5 cm if it was going about 30 Km/h relative to me at 45 degrees into
that turn. If the lateral smearing of the license plate is to be
believed, that agrees and is about right.

I was lucky to have anything in focus at all. I had no tripod or
monopod, too low shutter speed, and there wasn't anything obvious to
manually focus on at that low angle parallel to the road surface. I
braced the hood against the chain link fence for stability and
focussed on what I hoped were tire marks in the middle of the track. I
should have maintained the shutter at 1/250th or faster to stop the
lateral movement I think. I could have traded-off higher ISO to get
that.

My entire catch was comprised of near-misses I think.

Glad you found it interesting, Paul! :-)

Nice framing and exposure. However, the second car appears sharper than

car is more obviously out of focus, but you don't quite achieve that
here. Nevetheless, an interesting photo.

The 2:1 zoomed-out length was an issue when I was stabilizing it using
its hood against the chain-link fence, but that's minor. (I'm used to
the internal zooming of the DA* 50-135.) AF was fast on well-lit
stuff, but it did the crazy near/far see-saw thing when I tried to
focus on something in the shade.

It's rather slow too (f4 - f5.8) and I don't do a lot of outdoor
shooting these days, but that said, I did enquire from its owner if he
was considering selling it. :-)

The Ontario branch of the Ferrari Club of America books the track for
the day and members bring their own wheels to test on it. Here's one
decent shot I got where a couple of classic cars are entering Moss
Corner, the hairpin comprised of turns 5a and 5b.

http://www.flickr.com/bruce_m_walker/7587145124/

It's really hard to get an unobstructed sight-line here because of
multiple safety fences. We asked a track official if we could get
closer. After determining that we'd both signed the If You Get Killed
By Flying Car Parts You Can't Sue Us waiver, he said sure. "Just be on
your toes because that's a strike zone."

I was able to shoot through the closest chain link fence with the DA
55-300mm to get some nice low angles like this one. This is uncropped,
btw.

I saw a televised ALMS race this weekend from Mosport and although there
were noticeable improvements from my last visit in the mid 70's - we ran a 6
hour enduro - The 'Sundowner' in a Pinto and finished 6th overall, the track
still has a long way to go to rise up to the levels of say Road America or
Road Atlants.
Mosport was one of my favorite tracks especially with the F! and Can AM

You might barely recognize it, Frank. Since Canadian Tire bought it
they've been spending a lot of money on improvements. The access
tunnel under the track is now two lanes wide and tall enough to allow
car transports through. (So they no longer have to close the track to
bring the racers in.) They are building a new tower and large stands
across the track from where the pits are now. They've added 3 or 4
pedestrian bridges over the track so you aren't stuck on either the
"inside" or "outside" during a race.

But there's fencing everywhere. Tall, well-braced chain link adorns
all the curves and corners, and 5-foot cow fencing surrounds the whole
thing. We drove and walked all over the place to find a hint of an
unobstructed shot. It's not photographer-friendly.

It'd be okay if you drove up there with a cherry-picker I guess. :-(

Mind you, I used to go to races there in the seventies, so of course
they've upgraded safety...

Anyway, nice shot, Bruce. Mosport is a lovely track, both to drive and to
watch at.

I was invited by my K-5 shooting friend Gerrit Visser to spectate
during "Ferrari Day" at the Canadian Tire Motor Sport Park (aka
Mosport) Monday. Gerrit also loaned me his disused DA 55-300 as I
don't have any long glass to speak of, besides my DA 50-200.

This is uncropped,
btw.

On average I shoot far less than 6,000 frames a week. Probably less than 1,000
on average. It's when I'm shooting action, particularly when I'm shooting
events that a lot of people will want photos of themselves, that I shoot a lot
of frames. And even so, I almost always get people complaining because I
didn't get any photos of them.

I always preferred the editorial "we".

I always thought that the editorial we was as pretentious as the Royal
we when not used by a Royal. Though any way I look at it, it's still
grating, much like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Re: PESO - Day Lillies

2012-07-23 Thread Rick Womer
Interesting comments, thanks.  The problem with a shallower DOF is that I would
not have been able to keep the subject flowers in focus.  Computer trouble over
the weekend kept me from trying a vertical crop, which may be another way to
reduce the background distractions.

Cheers,

Rick

Re: geso: Save the TaTas

2012-07-23 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Don: That's a fun set. I think the last portrait, #2782 is the strongest,
with the first, #8990 following, though I'd like to see a bit of catch light to
the eyes in the first portrait, but that's a minor nit as compared to all other
strong qualities of the frame. To me, those two are real winners. I like
#0278 for the signage, Save the TA TAs, but the reflections in the woman's
glasses are less interesting than the reflections in the man's glasses, which
add to the photo. #1276 is nice and the reflections in the glasses work really
well there, especially the right lens.

I want to like the woman with the cig, number 6798, but for some reason it
isn't working right, pose, attitude, something isn't quite there for me. The
attitude is a little flat though it seems to want to ooze attitude, but
doesn't.

In number 1640 the man's headband says Sturgis, Black Hills Rally. That's a
big rally. I believe Jay Leno used to do that rally. If I ever get a
motorcycle again, for sure I'm going to do that rally.

Enjoyed your set. Cheers, Christine

That is a fun gallery.  I would have loved to have been able to stay a few more
days to join you!

There's just one problem: It isn't raining. Are you sure you were in England?

Cheers,

Re: England 2012: UK PDMLers

2012-07-23 Thread Christine Aguila
Thanks, Dave, Ann, and Rick! It rained for sure while we were there--some
areas had flash flooding-- mid areas and up by the Wilson's. Mikes's wife Cath
got caught in some flood traffic just before we arrived. I believe she said it
took about 7 hours to go 20 miles because of flooding. Did I get that right,
Mike? The rain never bothered Darrel and me. The dramatic weather added to
the adventure. There's something about the light in England. It's absolutely
beautiful to photograph--especially during the rain. The clouds and sky were
beautiful the whole trip. Something vey unique about the English sky and
clouds. Just lovely!

Chris' wife Karin spotted a cloud in the shape of England when we were driving
around. We call it Karin's England. I'll post it in a bit.

Cheers, Christine

Not much of a sensor test. The problem was with point light sources.
OTOH, I was worried the new sensor might lose other nice features of
the old sensor. The cat does look the same with both cameras,
however. ;-)
