The next purchase I'm considering is whatever replaces the OM-D.
I doubt if I'll need anything more than the K-5 offers, and I've
got most of the lenses I want. But I'd like something lighter.
The EPL-1 doesn't replace the K-5, but it supplements it nicely.

Re: Replacement for Pentax K-5

2012-08-15 Thread Peter Loveday

I dunno, I find the size/weight of the K-5 ok. All relative I suppose.

I'm pretty much entirely happy with the K-5 in almost all regards. I
suppose it shows how DSLRs are reaching maturity that so many of us are
actually happy with the product. Not so long ago being happy with a Pentax
product on this list might have been considered heresy :)

About the only thing that would encourage me to upgrade would be better
flash sync speeds, like 1/500th maybe. I can dream anyway :)

now to continue, the AF360 flash. I wanted to but a real pentax

Then you will be quite surprised to hear that cameras with exactly
this level of automation and a complete lack of manual control have
been incorporated into cellphones. And the uptake is surprisingly
strong.

Do you remember the Polaroid SX-70? Entire UI: button to open the
camera, button to trigger shutter. Slot where image comes out. Door to
change film. People loved them -- still do, in fact.

There's a market for a camera where "you point it and we do the rest."
Whether that can actually be achieved in reality is another matter.

Pentax Q: the best camera combined with the worst marketing in the history of the universe?

2012-08-15 Thread Darren Addy
I mentioned in an earlier post that I (a K-5 owner) was considering
also getting a Pentax Q and I thought I would follow-up with a little
bit of my reasons why (for those who may be interested).

Frankly, what got my attention was ONE POST on Pentax Forums.
Interestingly, it was a post that was rebutting a poster's assertion
that a Full Frame camera was useful for (among other things) macro and
wildlife. The poster's images were taken with a Pentax Q.
http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-news-rumors/194622-k5-replacement-4.html#post2052306

Prior to this post, I had really not even considered looking at the Q
because I saw it as gimmicky ("Smallest, lightest interchangeable lens
camera in the world") and I, frankly, couldn't believe that a sensor
that small could produce anything that worthwhile. Also it was
expensive. In my mind it was to DSLRs what the Pentax 110 was to 35mm
film cameras. Turns out that is a very bad analogy.

Prior to the post linked to above, the same poster wrote this very
complete "Real World Review" of the Pentax Q and I think it bears
consideration:
http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-q/194467-pentax-q-real-world-user-review.html
The photographer's Q stuff on Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/29329237@N07/sets/72157630529268492/

For starters, the heart of the Q is the Sony Exmor R backlit sensor.
Secondly, the Q was the first (not sure if it is still the only)
camera to use the Exmor R and also produce RAW files. (This is
significant, not only because it opens up your post-processing
toolbox, but because it also makes possible a lot of data for the
in-camera "filters" to process in creating those fun effects.)

As a manual focus lens lover, the other thing that is great about the
Q is that with adapters you can put virtually any lens in the world on
the front of this camera and see what it can do. Olympus OM mount,
Minolta MD mount, Canon FD mount, C-mount movie camera lenses, m42
screwmount lenses ... the list is endless. When doing so, you have to
keep in mind that a sensor this small comes with a large (5.6) crop
factor and that brings me to the other reason that "serious"
photographers should consider the Q a valuable "accessory". Consider
what one can do with a 100mm f2.8 macro on this camera. It at once
becomes a 560mm macro (with the benefit of greater DOF than you get on
larger sensor) and a 560mm telephoto faster than anything you can get
on a larger sensor camera. A lens like the Tokina AT-X 80-200mm f2.8
becomes a (35mm equiv) 450-1120mm super telephoto. This makes it a
super set-up for not only macro but wildlife/birding (sitting birds,
at least). Especially if using a lens set at hyperfocal distance, the
Q would also make an extremely good (as in hardly noticed)
shoot-from-the-hip street photography camera. In fact, anytime you
need a "stealth" camera (like getting into most big concert venues
these days, where a DSLR will get stopped at the door, the Q could be
a great choice.

Check out this comparison of a shot of the moon taken with the same
lens on the Pentax Q and the K-5 (and the larger K-5 image cropped to
the equiv. composition)
http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-q/185934-new-pentax-red-dot-finder-q-da-300-img-3.html#post2003699
and I think you'll begin to see that you may be turning up your nose
at the small sensor size in the Q a little bit too fast (at least I
was).

How about a shoot on the Q and process on the iPad set-up? Can't get a
lot more lightweight than that!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/travelchick67/6397329885/

For some of my purposes, I think the Q will require a magnifying hood
such as this well-reviewed one:
http://www.amazon.com/Hoodman-H-LPP3-HoodLoupe-Professional-3-Inch/dp/B001N0KEWU/

I think that this camera's "Smallest in the world" campaign might work
in Japan and in Women's magazines (if Pentax advertised there). But
this camera has so much going for it that I think it could have been
marketed in multiple ways: to the Lomo-loving crowd. To the
stealth-shooter. And most of all in a VW Beetle "Small is Beautiful"
way to get people to look beyond the small sensor size to what amazing
things it can produce. Check out the (multiple) posts of user
"official tomoduch" on this page, to see what sort of FUN combined
with great images the Q can produce.
http://www.seriouscompacts.com/f90/pentax-q-samples-4129/index2.html

I think that this guy's sentiments kind of nail the reality of where
things are at the moment:
http://pyktures.blogspot.com/2011/06/small-reality-check-on-state-of-digital.html

After all of this examination, I've decided to pull the trigger on a
used Q kit with the normal prime f1.9 lens, and an extra battery for
$330. I'm also getting the C to Q adapter and K to C adapters that the
seller is offering for another $50. As was pointed out yesterday, if
you keep your eye on Amazon Deals, it is possible to get a returned Q
kit (all-but-new) for around $335 and that makes it a "BUY"
recommendation, in my boo

There have been 4/3 to m43 adapters since the beginning of m43. The
Olympus version conveys every function of Olympus 4/3 lenses. The
Panasonic version adds the extra function of in-lens optical image
stabilization which is particular to their lenses and was developed
outside of the 4/3 blueprint, a bit like RIcoh's independent
development of aperture control linkage for K-mount lenses.

Despite this you can still use an Olympus adapter between Panasonic
m43 cameras and 4/3 lenses, because it is the principle of the 4/3
concept to be a universal fit regardless of brand. You simply
sacrifice the OIS function which Olympus gear was never meant to
support.

Actually, the FourThirds to Micro-FourThirds adapters are identical in
function. Panasonic's in-lens IS on their Elmarit-D 14-50 and 14-150
mm lenses for FourThirds format works fine on the Olympus bodies
(although it is unneeded for all the modern ones which have IBIS).
Panasonic only produced four lenses for FourThirds SLRs anyway, and
only three of them have OIS (the Summilux-D 25mm does not).

Olympus bodies simply don't have the firmware for controlling the
different options of the Panasonic OIS, just like they don't have the
firmware to allow the Summilux and early 14-50/2.8-3.5 or
14-150/3.5-5.6 lenses' aperture rings. The OIS is switched on and off
by a mechanical switch on the lenses, and operates only in Mode 1
(continuous). (The aperture is controlled by standard Olympus on-body
controls.) Did a fine job with my E-1.

All the FourThirds SLR lenses have been fully usable on all
Micro-FourThirds bodies from the beginning with both Panasonic and
Olympus adapters, with the exception of auto-focus capabilities. All
Olympus bodies will support autofocus functions, albeit not
particularly quickly, where Panasonic felt that the AF was poor enough
on most that they limited support to those that at least had some CDAF
logic built into them on the earliest bodies.

The latest Micro-FourThirds bodies from Olympus manage the FourThirds
SLR lenses' AF functions more efficiently so AF performance has been
improved. My understanding is that they might implement a PDAF module
in an adapter to supplement the CDAF and improve focusing speed, like
Sony has done.

Whew, has this discussion moved off the track from the Si ... ;-)

2012-08-15 Thread Anthony Farr
That's good news, because it means I can save a load of dollars when I
buy an adapter, because Panasonic's is much pricier. Are Panasonic's
shake sensors built into the lenses and not the bodies?

I had thought they were controlled from the bodies, because the
stabilization mode selection is controlled from the body's menu on my
Panny G2 and there's no switch on the lens. Did the G1 use a switch
on the lenses like the 4/3 Panny DSLRs did?

Panasonic uses an optical image stabilization mechanism built into
each lens that supports it. The Micro-FourThirds lens delivered with
the G1 had the on/off switch to enable it built into the lens. Later
mFT lenses (and body firmware) move the on-off capability into the
body firmware and later lenses lack the on-off switch.

In the body firmware for both mFT and FT were the other OIS control
options (mode 1,2 and 3 operation :: continuous, at exposure time
only, panning) all the way along. On Olympus FT bodies without IBIS,
you use the in-lens OIS in the default Mode 1 operation. On Olympus
mFT bodies, you're best to turn off the OIS and engage the body's IBIS
system.

All three of the Panasonic FT lenses which supported OIS had the
on/off switch on the lens.

Prices for the FT to mFT adapters have varied back and forth depending
on market region and brand. The most expensive one is the latest one
from Olympus which is weather-sealed and completes the weather-sealing
provided by the E-M5 and (FT) ZD HG and SHG lenses. It's not important
if you don't have a weather-sealed body or lens.

I'm a little confused by what adapter you plan to buy. No adapter is
needed to use Panasonic FT lenses on Olympus FT bodies, and vice
versa. Similarly, no adapter is needed to use Panasonic mFT lenses on
Olympus mFT bodies and vice-versa. You only need an FT to mFT adapter
to use FT SLR lenses on mFT bodies, and which adapter you choose from
Olympus or Panasonic makes no difference other than for the weather
sealing I mentioned above, and price.

I have Oly 4/3 lenses which I'd someday like to use on my Panny mFT

She's a bitch.

Truth is, it is easier for galleries to sell big mark-up sculptures and
paintings than photographs. Photos still elicit a thought "I can do that!"
unless looking at a master's work. By masters, I mean those willing and able to
travel to where masterful photos can be taken. Frequently off the beaten path.
They know their equipment so well, the final product can hold even duffers like

For whatever reason, Pentax has not been able to hold on to counter space in
Costco, or any of the major big box stores. Contract too limiting? Sales not
there? No one ever calls on them to try? That is where cameras are sold
nowadays if the customer has to have "hands on".

Since film has diminished in the world of the "consumer", few frequent camera
stores anymore, unless it's in the mall. They have in the last few years
shuttered many of those.

I would say that most cameras are sold online now. Where people go when the
advertising on TV by Canikon, even Sony. TV ad = sit down at computer = buy
that brand = sign for FedEx package 1-7 days later = then spend 6 months
figuring out how to use it as a point and shoot if you bought a DSLR, or the
reverse.

Keep in mind, when the TV camera pans the audience at a concert, no one is
holding up a camera. It's iPhones and iPads capturing video for U Tubulars.
Poor video.

Ah. Well, just to be clear, you'll never have the Panasonic OIS

PESO: Critter

2012-08-15 Thread John Sessoms
I have been so uninspired I haven't even felt like picking my camera up
for several months. I think the last photos I took were at GFM Nature
Photography Weekend.

Yesterday while I was cutting the grass, this little fellow got dumped
out when I was emptying the catcher bag. I kind of scooped him up and
dropped him on my rose bush so he would be out of the way. He was still
hanging on the rose bush when I finished my yard work, so I went and got
my camera & put my A* 100 f/2.8 macro on it.

I took about 50 frames before he got irritated and left. This is one of
the two I'm relatively happy with:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/7790647954/lightbox/

K20D, A*100 f/2.8 macro @ f/8 and I'm not going to walk back into the
other room just to see what the shutter speed was.

When I was prepping it in Bridge, I noticed I've got a hot pixel that
causes a sharp line to appear across the frame. I tried to clone it out,
but I can see I need to go back and work on it again in some places.

Whew, has this discussion moved off the track from the Si ... ;-)

Instamatic.

I've heard of it several times, but never bothered to look it up. I figure
it's something like Facebook, and I think I've mentioned before how I feel
about that.

Lately, I've been thinking about prices & such if I ever bother to
actually find work as a photographer.

I've decided my session fee will be $300 for adults & children, with the
exception of teen-age girls, where it's going to be $3000 unless they will
sign a contract that they promise that I do not have to listen to them
talk during the session.

I have been so uninspired I haven't even felt like picking my camera
up for several months. I think the last photos I took were at GFM
Nature Photography Weekend.

Yesterday while I was cutting the grass, this little fellow got
dumped out when I was emptying the catcher bag. I kind of scooped him
up and dropped him on my rose bush so he would be out of the way. He
was still hanging on the rose bush when I finished my yard work, so I
went and got my camera & put my A* 100 f/2.8 macro on it.

I took about 50 frames before he got irritated and left. This is one
of the two I'm relatively happy with:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/7790647954/lightbox/

K20D, A*100 f/2.8 macro @ f/8 and I'm not going to walk back into the
other room just to see what the shutter speed was.

When I was prepping it in Bridge, I noticed I've got a hot pixel that
causes a sharp line to appear across the frame. I tried to clone it
out, but I can see I need to go back and work on it again in some
places.

Yes, and the helmets on the kids are padded on the exterior, as well
as interior. Safer for the other castellers that way...

Hellooo out there!

Summer vacation & travels have kept me off the list for a while...
did I miss anything? :)

Thought I'd share a collection of shots that I took a couple of weeks
ago in Spain. For the second year, we were visiting with friends who
live outside of Barcelona... they participate in making Castells, or
human towers. Which, near as I can tell, is a combination athletic
contest, Catalan cultural event & performance art. It's really quite
incredible to watch. (Especially for someone from the litigious US...
I was inspired to teach my Spanish friends the English idiom "lawsuit
waiting to happen"...) People from all walks of life participate,
from young to old. Indeed, the youngest are the ones climbing to the
top of the towers, which can reach 8 or 9 stories high.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/23028562@N04/sets/72157631083652560/with/7789544188/

Apologies for the size of the set, it is also being shared with the
participants... here's a shot that gives an idea of the Castells:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/23028562@N04/7789543272/in/set-72157631083652560/

Another outtake - how it looks when something goes wrong... At one
point, one of the towers collapsed. I managed to get a couple of
shots off while I dove for cover:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/23028562@N04/7789544188/in/set-72157631083652560

I think what I find so compelling about this activity is the
closeness... everyone mashed together, feet on shoulders, hands
grabbing what-have-you... talk about being on top of each other!
