I know it from the Mayakovsky poem. When I was in my 20s and early 30s my
girlfriend was a half-Russian woman who studied Russian language &
literature at university. She is a big fan of Mayakovsky, so I became
moderately familiar with some of his work, mainly his graphics, but also
some of his poetry. We had a recording of him reading Pasluschetye (? -
"Listen!").

We saw a play called Futurists about Mayakovsky sometime in the mid-80s,
with Daniel Day-Lewis playing Mayakovsky. Day-Lewis was relatively unknown
at the time.

I knew someone on the list would recognise the reference :o)

Yeah. Getting old sucks.

I've had the odd eye floater over the past few years but never quite
as dramatic as Mike's. They are a bit of a worry when they first
appear but they're pretty common and they tend to come and go.

Just a heads-up for those who have to pay for treatment or who may
suffer a premium increase for consulting.

Stepping out of the house on Thursday, I saw a splash of white across
my left eye. Thinking it was bird poop, I wiped the eye but there was
nothing there. Then I noticed the huge (60-70% of my vision) field of
floaters that had appeared. Clearly a cause for concern. Off to the
local eye infirmary (a leftover from the local industrial past) for a
checkup, where the above was diagnosed.

A very common occurence, apparently, and completely harmless in itself.
Complications such as those mentioned in the wiki article are very rare
- I was the third person that day to turn up with the problem and the
opthamologist had seen no complications this year. She highlighted that
it was only really necessary to come back if an occurence caused a dark
patch in my vision that I could not see through or my vision as a whole
rapidly deteriorated. She also said that complications generally occur
at the time, not later, unlike the wiki article.

So there you go.

I'm pretty sure this is my last 'friends' wedding shoot

2012-09-09 Thread David J Brooks
Thinks went well considering the horrid weather Saturday. Very heavy
rains all day and then they stopped just as the ceremony started so i
thought great., i'll be able to get some out door group shots. The
position of the sun and gazebo was horrid for shadows so i shot into
the sun with my D200 and used the sb800 for fill. That part worked
well, however the winds were just awful, really really strong and
blowing all sorts of stuff around, and i suppose thats were the dust
came from that i see as lens flare on those shots. Two big ones, one
is at camera top so i can crop that one out, but i have a number of
shots with a big dust lens flare at mid body of any one standing at my
far left. Not sure how i can get that out.

The rest of the shots went well, just some WB adjustments and sharping
should do the trick.

I'm pissed at my self for the dust, not visible in the monitor, i'm
sure the bride wont mind to much, but i wanted to do a good job non
the less.

I think i will refuse any incoming wedding requests from now on.

An '86 Interceptor 500 would go nicely in my garage. Great balance of

I'm glad I'm not alone in my opinion. I have to make an admission - while I
was there I was reading "Mythologies" by Roland Barthes, so I was seeing
signs and signifiers everywhere, and that probably affected my photography.

Re: PESOs: Duxford Airshow

2012-09-09 Thread Chris Mitchell
Thanks Bob,

Yes it's a T9 trainer. A number of single seaters were converted
during the 1940s as dual seat trainers to train Seafire pilots in
carrier operations. There are only a couple left, both in the UK I
think, although there is talk of a team starting manufacturing one
from scratch. Up until about 5 years ago it was possible to go up as a

Well I wondered if maybe you were handholding the 300. In that case,
well done! :-)

You *can* sharpen up motion-blurred shots a bit in Lightroom/ACR if
you crank the Radius value up around 2.0 or more and reduce the
Amount. It's basically a compromise between fine detail sharpening and
local contrast enhancement. And Photoshop's Smart Sharpening filter
has settings for reversing motion blur if you can determine the
dominant direction/angle of the blur.

Process in some pseudo Polaroid or Holga effects, some gradient
fashion tints, and tell anyone who asks that this stuff is all the
rage in wedding photos now.

Re: The last Photokina speculation thread on PDML before Photokina

2012-09-09 Thread Miserere
P.J.,

I don't want to get into a fight about this. I won't consider Pentax
the KBC (King of Backwards Compatibility) until they uncripple their
mount (either physically or through software). They could do it but,
like Seinfeld, choose not to. When companies act this way it pisses me
off.

I've been told that it's because Pentax doesn't want me using my M
mount glass, they want me to buy new lenses. I would be fine with this
statement (I do understand good business practice) if we had a
thorough DA lens line up, but I own a few non-A mount lenses that
Pentax doesn't make in DA mount, and I have to use them with the green
button or wide open.

Just *my* opinion, mind you; I'm not trying to convince anyone.

Cheers,

I was taught to erase ink with a Pen knife, the small folding pocket
knife carried by gentlemen. It works much better on vellum than rag or
wood based paper, but if you're careful it still works. It was also
useful for sharpening quills and pencils.

So in fact your wife's royal wedding commemorative rubber (which she
used for so many years) was performing the function that gave rise to
why rubber got called rubber in the first place.

I'll bet you didn't know that...

The "other" meaning of rubber which you allude to is much more recent.
It only came about in the 1930s.

Great photo Rick. It captures that particular kitsch that Brits come up
with for Royal events. I was in England before the Charles & Diana
wedding and scored a genuine "royal wedding souvenir rubber" Those who
speak King's English could explain why my wife used it for years.

Loved the photo, thanks for the memory.

Re: OT Posterior vitreous detachment

2012-09-09 Thread Joseph McAllister
I too have been afflicted with these pesky gnats of vision, for 12 years now.
The combo name for what happened is called "Flashes and Floaters".

Usually, mine are not noticeable, though situated directly on center, one in
each eye. I can see them best with either my eyes closed, or looking at a
uniform light surface. Because they are in your vitreous humor (the jelly that
squirts out when you step on an errant eyeball) they can be moved out of the
way for a few with eye or head movement, only to return to approximately where
they began, with a delay, of course.

The pesky part is the frequent belief that something just flew by you left or
right when you move your eyes suddenly, capturing your attention for a brief
instant, even turning your head to see what it was in some instances.

If you want to play with them, you can move your eyes around and pretend they
are flies having a battle in front of you.

Old age - there is only one way to avoid it.

I think that all of the moons that were visible were below Jupiter, an are in
the frame.

It will probably not surprise you that I have many more frames. I was
experimenting with different ISOs, shutter speeds, apertures etc, as well as
bracketing. I just picked one that seemed to work. Yesterday was also rather
busy, especially since because of these photos I had been up until 6am and got
a late start on the day. I may well have some better versions elsewhere.

with two doublers on the 300, the one that came with it, and an external,
Jupiter and the moon barely fit in the frame and by the time I ran two sets of
bracketed shot,I'd have to readjust.

As to the other one, the quick and dirty, with the moon so terribly
overexposed, I think that the ghost image is just due to reflection inside.
Quite possibly off the sensor and then the back of the lens.

There is a fantasy author I like who got dropped by his publisher. He

When he raises enough (usually about $5000) he will write the novel.

Just a heads-up for those who have to pay for treatment or who may
suffer a premium increase for consulting.

Stepping out of the house on Thursday, I saw a splash of white across my
left eye.

Did you update the wiki article with the corrections?

Cheers,

In a ccnversation at a performance of Russian poetry and music by
a Russian performer somewhere in Western Europe (France?) in early 1990s,
one of the local literature enthuziasts/critics exlaimed that they know
and love Daniil Harms ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniil_Kharms ),
and they consider him one of the classics of black humor. To which,
the Russian performer responded: "You call it `black humor', we call
it `social realizm'".

Bob, thanks for sharing your story of how you learned about Mayakovsky.
You can read the translation of "Listen!" ("Poslushayte!") e.g. here:

Re: The last Photokina speculation thread on PDML before Photokina

2012-09-09 Thread P. J. Alling
I agree with you vis a vis Pentax, mostly, but I'd still hardly consider
Nikon to be more backward compatible than Pentax. The fact that their
top level cameras can meter most series of their older lenses wide open
doesn't excuse building lenses and cameras that can actually damage each
other when ostensibly compatible. Maybe ass-backwards compatible would
be the correct way of looking at it.

On 9/9/2012 11:25 AM, Miserere wrote:

Oh, I don't expect Pentax a.k.a. king of backward compatibility to
produce
K-01-only lens. That is something that can be imagined, but can probably
not
be imagined to come true, you know.

I'd say Pentax is the *Queen* of compatibility; Nikon is the King. But
yes, most things related to Pentax are hard to imagine, even if they
do actually happen.

You forget that Nikon built an entire series of lenses that would cause
damage to either the lens, camera or both it mounted on the wrong series
camera body. The only time Pentax even came close to that was back in the
screw mount era, (pre-Spotmatic), and even then it was only one lens IIRC.
Sure the aperture simulator is gone but at least no Pentax produced K mount
lens will damage any Pentax manufactured K mount body or vice versa.

RE: Semi OT -- Any suggestions on cleaning a laptop screen?

2012-09-09 Thread John Sessoms

From: "P. J. Alling"

My desktop is down for the moment, this is like the third HD failure
I've experienced in the last two years. I think I managed to keep
everything backed up and had a fair amount of warning, but I won't know
until I rebuild the machine. Working on my laptop I been noticing how
much crud is on the screen. It's one of the older ones without a shiny
surface. Any suggestions?

I just use plain water and some super fluffy "Microfiber Ultra Soft Spa
Towels" I bought at AutoZone for cleaning my car windows. They were
something like $2.99 for a package of 6. Dampen the towel & clean the
screen, then go over it with a dry towel.

Power off, of course.

Here's what Toshiba has to say (my current laptop is a Toshiba).

How to properly clean your laptop screen

1. Turn the computer off.

2. Do not touch or press on the screen with your bare hands or
fingers. Oils or grease from your hands can stain or smudge the
screen and may be difficult to remove.

3. Use a soft dry cotton cloth to gently wipe away fingerprints and
smudges from the screen. If this does not completely remove the dirt
and smudges, lightly dampen the cloth with water and try again. Never
spray liquid directly on the screen.

Special cleaning cloths are available and are probably a good
investment. Be very careful that you select a cloth that is free from
any particles or dirt that can damage the screen. Do not use paper
towels, ammonia, or strong cleaners on the screen under any
circumstances.

Try to clean your monitor at least once a month. Who knows, it could
change your perspective on the world.

Note particularly item #2 - one of the reasons I will never have an
iPad. They're always covered in greasy fingerprints & it's severe PITA
to get them off.

Selling points

It is interesting to see the current market trends.

On dpreview, there is currently a flash-based ad for Panasonic Lumix G5
http://s0.2mdn.net/2687483/1-panasonic_photokina_300x250.swf

The main advertising points are "14 filter effects, countless creative
options" (in my firefox, this ad doesn't show all the steps except the
alst one).
While just recently it was a race for MegaPixels, now, it's the
effects..

In a similar manner, when I was looking at reviews of some smartphones
yesterday, I was disappointed that some of them said nothing about quality
of calls, while describing in detail camera(s), apps, etc.

On another hand, personal computers are not sold for their
_computational_ power either...

Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4 has that capability built in, for all DA
lenses. It also allows manual adjustments for all other lenses.

When I logged in (with my free subscription credentials) the link I

issue is much bigger than I initially realized when I originally
posted.

I had not been previously aware of the (FREE) cornerfix software, and
the fact that you can get results on par with Capture One from it is
very *interesting*. I'd love to get some feedback from people who have
tried using cornerfix with their Pentax DSLRs. The fact that we can
easily put so many different legacy lenses on our Pentax DSLRs
(perhaps inviting this problem in our RAW files) makes this
potentially VERY helpful for Pentax owners.

Free cornerfix software download link:

This is a bigger issue (apparently) on larger sensor cameras, but if
nothing else is good to know for when the Pentax FF is in our grubby
little paws.

Re: Semi OT -- Any suggestions on cleaning a laptop screen?

2012-09-09 Thread Igor Roshchin

P.J.,

Sorry to hear about your HDD problems.

If you clean your laptop in acetone, especially if you let it soak for
some time in an acetone bath[*], that should take care of all the crud. It
will also take care of the laptop and guarantee that _in the future_,
you won't have any problems with that laptop (such as those that you are
having with your desktop).

[*] Heating it up to ~132 F will speed up the process.
Note that using open flame for heating may help you (or whatever is left
of you) making it to the regional or probably even national news.

Be careful with a flaming reply to this message too!

The cognescenti know what to look for in the specs. What do you say
about an advanced camera to the P&S group looking to update? I
recently bought my sister a used Lumix LX3 as a gift. She had taken
up scrapbooking and I could see a more serious compact, i.e., a bigger
sensor and a much nicer Leica lens, would serve her better than her
then current P&S. I asked her how she was doing with it, and she said
"I really like it. My pictures look a lot better, especially the
indoor ones." What higher praise for a camera? Of course, now she's
thinking a bit more about her photography and what the settings mean,
all because this is a "better" camera and she's willing to invest the
time to use it right. The classic self-fulfiling prophecy

We returned last Tuesday. Currently going thru around a thousand RAW images.

Back in the 80's we had been thru the Inside Passage on the Alaska Marine
Highway (a Ferry) but didn't spend much time, mainly going from point A to
B, but knew we wanted to go back an explore some.

We were on a National Geographic/Lindblad 'expedition' ship - 152 foot long
carrying 62 passengers. We boarded the ship in Juneau, stopped for a few
hours in Petersburg and left the ship in Sitka. They offered kayaks for
individual exploring and had six Zodiaks used to get us ashore for hikes and
from which we did photography.
They did an outstanding job and I would highly recommend them to someone
interested in the Inside Passage.

Obviously more images to follow!

A great place to capture marine life.

Captured this Stellar Sea Lion around the Inian Islands while on a

Re: Peso - name that vintage car

2012-09-09 Thread John Sessoms

From: "P. J. Alling"

I owned a 72 which brings back memories, some of them horror filled. It
was a fun car to drive, mostly.

I bet none of them include being broke down on the side of the road with
a broken water pump.

PESO 2012 - eight photos - GDG

2012-09-09 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Sheesh, can't remember how many of these I've posted to the mailing lists. And
I'm distracted with some Work work, don't think I'll get to a blog post this
weekend.

Anyway, for those who'd enjoy wandering through, here's eight recent photos
I've posted to flickr.com. First five are 35mm B&W film with the Leica CL, the
other three are Polaroid SX-70 captured on Impossible Project Color Shade film.

PESO - The Guitar Player

2012-09-09 Thread frank theriault
A couple of weeks ago they had a block party one street over, to which
Judy and me were invited (is that correct grammar?). A permit was
obtained to shut down the street, one of the neighbours who's a
firefighter got a fire truck and firefighters there for a few minutes
for the kids who could climb in the truck and all, people had
barbeques set up and all had a good time.

I took photos.

None of them turned out.

Except this picture of one of the band members (yes, a party band was
hired - they were great and had everyone up dancing):

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Re: PESO - Girl with the Flower Tattoo

2012-09-09 Thread frank theriault
No, I don't think I'll do B&W, for a number of reasons:

To me the red tatoo is the essence of the photo.

Second, I've decided I don't like the photo as much as I did last
night. I really missed the moment - with her head turned away from
the camera one can barely see the cigarette she's smoking, plus while
I like her reflection in the window, the other reflections really
clutter things.

Too many flaws to make it worth putting any more effort into it than I
have already.

Thanks for your thoughts, though, and thanks to everyone else who
looked and commented. On to bigger and better things!

;-)

cheers,
frank
