I should probably look Bieber up on YouTube just to know what all the fuss is about. I try to remember how important some trivial things seemed when I was a teen and how it made me feel when my parents dismissed them without ever seeming to give them fair consideration. I don't care for much of today's popular music, but I try not to criticize without giving it a fair hearing (although I do wear hearing protection while doing so). I've seen that Gagmestyle video. I thought it was funny clever. From: Bruce Walker I think we've gone full circle from the 6 Transistor radios that teens listened to tinny, static-y mono AM rock'n'roll on. Now thanks to MP3's, highly compressed satellite feeds and the loudness wars, we have audio just a little better than the old 6 transistors, but still distorted all to hell. OT GESO - Labour Day
Beautiful run of weather lately, and being a long weekend made it even nicer. Continuing on my project of revisiting little-used lenses, I took the Avenon 21mm/2.8 out for a walk. Used to be one of my favourites, but since acquiring the formidable Zeiss 21mm/2.8, I've hardly touched the Avenon. It might be the weak coating, or it might be lashings of spherical aberration, this lens has a lot of glow, especially when shooting contre-jour. But it really gives it character. Matched with the equally-fun Epson R-D1s, the combo is a good reminder to me that I don't need to be on the technological bleeding edge. As it happens, I also hit the generous (not) limit of space allocated by my ISP for the website, so I razed it to the ground and started anew. Still work in progress, so please excuse the plaster dust. Not quite sure why the little prev/next arrows don't come up when hovering over the pics, so click on the left or right of the large images to navigate. http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc/12/10/labourday/index.html -- der...@iinet.net.au http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

RE: Stupid Hardware Question
From: William Robb Hi: I have a Samsung 225BW monitor which has decided to go rogue on me. When I wake up my screens, it will flash on and then off again. If I cycle the power on and off a few times, it will light up and stay lit. Is this something that is repairable or should I just trash the thing? It's my second screen, so I'm not really too concerned that it is kind of a crap monitor, and I fear that if I replace it, I'll buy another good screen (). I did a Google search for Samsung 225BW and Google immediately suggested Samsung 225BW repair instead. Don't know if that's a good sign or not, but it gives About 18,800 results (0.25 seconds). You might be able to do it yourself if you're handy with a soldering iron: http://www.ccl-la.com/blog/index.php/repairing-the-samsung-225bw-22-monitor/ This model monitor uses the IP-45130A power supply board. Typical symptoms of a power supply failure are no power, flashing power light and no display, slow to show picture or a white screen. Sounds like that might be similar to what you're experiencing. Don't know what you can do if you're not handy with a soldering iron, but that's really a question about the structure of our modern throw-a-way society as a whole. Around here, there's one retail electronics repair business still hanging on, so there's a place I could take it to to have it fixed, but I was going to do it myself, all of the supply houses that I would have gone to for parts are long gone. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Somewhere in my camera junk box I have an elastic/velcro gizmo that wraps around a small camera and includes a threaded cable release socket with delrin push button, specifically designed to do the shutter release without damaging the button on cameras that don't have port for a remote. But guess what? The expensive electrical remote transmits less vibration to the camera and works better. Yeah, but that expensive electrical remote won't convert the camera half of the double cable release from the Auto Bellows A into a signal that will trip the shutter while the lens is stopped down. Leaves me still stuck with needing three hands. I will have to take another look at those elastic/velcro gizmos though to see if I can get a usable socket from one of them. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Playing with shadows
When I sit out at night on the bench by the river in my back yard, I keep noticing the shadow cast by my bicycle onto the dance floor. Last night, I put my strobe on the upstairs back porch, with the shade to direct the light, and got some photos of the shadows cast. I'm not entirely pleased with the results, I'd like sharper shadows all of the way around. I had thought about putting the grid on the strobe, another possibility is taking the shade off (almost the opposite) which would make the light source smaller, and therfore sharper/harder. Another possibility would be some foil over the end of a shade with a smaller hold in the middle, for an even smaller relative light source. Has anyone tried something along these lines? Or have other suggestions? For reference, here is a shot from last night: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8042908138/in/set-72157631665170226 note that the shadows are nice and sharp at the bottom, but a bit fuzzy and rough at top. There are also probably other things I could do by setting the light up along the 30-50 foot length of the dance floor and deck, rather than the 20 foot width, and shooting down from a ladder to get a higher angle. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Playing with shadows
I like the effect like you show here, but I agree that sharper edged shadows would be great. To get a sharp shadow you want your light rays parallel, so setup the flash as far away as you can and yet still control it and get enough light. No modifiers on it, except try the grid. copyright small claims court
http://www.copyright.gov/docs/smallclaims/ The Copyright Act protects a wide variety of works of authorship, from individual articles or photographs that may not have a high commercial value to motion pictures worth hundreds of millions of dollars in the marketplace. The copyright owners of all of these works can use copyright law to pursue certain unauthorized uses. Not all of these copyright owners, however, have the same resources to bring a federal lawsuit, which can require substantial time, money, and effort. Moreover, while a copyright owner may want to stop an infringement that caused a relatively small amount of economic damage, that owner may be dissuaded from filing a lawsuit because a potentially small award may not justify the potentially large expense of litigation. While the Act offers the possibility of statutory damages and attorney fees, these benefits are not available in all cases and parties cannot recover them until after the copyright owner has engaged in a potentially long court battle that requires up front costs. The Copyright Office has been asked by Congress to study the obstacles facing small copyright claims disputes, as well as possible alternatives. Specifically, the Office is to undertake a study to: (1) assess the extent to which authors and other copyright owners are effectively prevented from seeking relief from infringements due to constraints in the current system; and (2) furnish specific recommendations, as appropriate, for changes in administrative, regulatory and statutory authority that will improve the adjudication of small copyright claims and thereby enable all copyright owners to more fully realize the promise of exclusive rights enshrined in our Constitution. The initial notice of inquiry seeks comment on how copyright owners have handled small copyright claims and the obstacles they have encountered, as well as potential alternatives to the current legal system that could better accommodate such claims. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Ben Kanarek ponders jump from K-5 to D600 or 6D
Interesting blog entry from former PDMLer but still loyal Pentax fashion shooter, Benjamin Kanarek. Based on the premise that he wants FF but Pentax hasn't delivered, he steps through a decision process of comparing the two new inexpensive FF's. Two very interesting related comments in the follow-ups: Benjamin is mostly pissed-off at the poor AF of the K5. I need a camera where when go to a shoot, I don't feel paranoid that half of my stuff is not in focus... :-( And when somebody suggested that of course clients would expect him to be shooting with one of the top brands or at least the Pentax 645D, he retorts: My clients have never once ever scrutinized my camera gear. http://www.benjaminkanarekblog.com/2012/09/28/nikon-d600-canon-6d-question/ -- -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

CR is not for the enthusiast. Of anything. Back when I read the odd high end stereo mag like Stereophile or Absolute Sound (Are either of those still around? I don't know...) they decried CR stereo ratings: This Naim amplifier seems sturdily built and rugged, and it measures quite good although at only 15 watts per side it's not very powerful. At 1/10th the price we recommend this Sansui receiver with 200 watts per channel and even better measurements than the Naim. Plus, the Sansui has a built-in tuner and pre-amp! A much better value! We did double-blind AB testing and 8 out of 10 listeners couldn't tell the difference... cheers, frank What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof. -- Christopher Hitchens --- Original Message --- From: steve harley p...@paper-ape.com Sent: October 1, 2012 10/1/12 To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Subject: Re: OT: Consumer Reports on 2012-10-01 10:19 Daniel J. Re: iPhone 5--sheesh!
Well, I'll semi- quibble with that. About a year ago my 1974-vintage Pioneer receiver died. I replaced it with a Yamaha RS-500. Wow, what a difference! It inspired me to take apart, clean, and rebuild my 1974 Pioneer PL-12D turntable; and they sound wonderful through my EPI 100 (also 1974; rebuilt woofers in 1990) speakers. RE: Peso. Fall colours through a pair of sunglasses
From: David J Brooks I have a pair of amber sunglasses that slip over my glasses. During the fall colour season, the amber/yellow really makes the colours pop, so on my weekend trip i stopped in Sunderland Ontario and shot this church. I took several shots with and with out a circular polarize r and this one through the glasses. Not quite what i see in my eyeballs but kinda neat. I used the WB tool and some luminous adjustment on oranges and purples. http://www.flickr.com/photos/djbrooks/8044225769/in/photostream K-5, D FA 16-45 f2 Are those the Blue Blockers? I had a pair at one time. Don't remember them allowing that much color through. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
