Re: K-5 on sale at Henrys this Monday
OK, now that's more like it thought it still shows up on my computer as 979.99 (Doesn't specify if it's US or Canadian $). So the lens is really a couple of hundred dollars off. Adoroma has the K-5 body only for 749 US. So while this is a good deal, it's not that great a deal. On 11/26/2012 10:16 AM, David J Brooks wrote: On Mon, Nov 26, 2012 at 9:54 AM, P. J. Enablement + geso: Turkey Trot
Happy Cyber Monday to all... Hope everyone stateside enjoyed a nice holiday weekend! Sharing some shots I took on Thanksgiving at our town's annual Turkey Trot. I brought along a newly-acquired Pentax 60-250 after my first outings with it a couple of weeks ago, I wasn't entirely sure I was going to keep it. It's heavy... among other things... I tried using it with a monopod, but I found it awkward. I've used it at a few 5k races for some portraits so far... my initial impression at the races was that focus was off... but that doesn't seem to be the case with stationery subjects... So, I tried to pay closer attention to my technique this last time... maybe I'm getting the hang of it. I should probably start working out if I'm going to keep it. :) http://www.flickr.com/photos/23028562@N04/sets/72157632102943391/ :) -c -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

RE: PESO - Tram and Castle
From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Don Guthrie Yes one city I would truly like to visit. I liked the photo a great deal after gazing fondly at it for 5 minutes. On my monitor it looks like the couple are dropping gold coins? yes - that's a nice idea! It's the reflection of the lamp on the wet slabs, but it looks like gold coming out of the carrier bag. In Paris there are hordes of beggars and con-artists who have a scam which involves them picking up an apparently gold ring from the pavement and handing it to you, as if you'd dropped it. Of course as an honest person you say it's not yours and you can't take it. This leads into their spiel in which they somehow (try to) get you to hand over some honest cash for the ring, which is of course worthless. The great thing about it is there are so many people doing it - sit on the Tuileries for 5 minutes and it's like watching a synchronised street art performance. Supreme Court rejects appeal on taping Illinois cops ASSOCIATED PRESS November 26, 2012 9:38AM Reprints 11 Updated: November 26, 2012 10:06AM WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected an Illinois prosecutor’s plea to allow enforcement of a law aimed at stopping people from recording police officers on the job. The justices on Monday left in place a lower court ruling that found that the state’s anti-eavesdropping law violates free speech rights when used against people who tape law enforcement officers. The law sets out a maximum prison term of 15 years. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit in 2010 against Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez to block prosecution of ACLU staff for recording police officers performing their duties in public places. It’s one of the group’s long-standing monitoring missions. Re: PESO: Serious about Recycling
Thanks for the comment, Rick. AT home, we simply place all the recycling in a container supplied by the county, and they take it all and sort it. The line-up of recycling containers is in an environmental education center in Duke Farms, near our home. I had the same reaction that you did; they are making recycling a lot mor difficult than it need be. Even more, I resent being lectured on environmental responsibility by a foundation built on tobacco money. Re: Enablement + geso: Turkey Trot
Thanks, Don. Yes, it's the runners coming straight at me that I have the most trouble keeping in focus. On my first outing with this lens, especially... it seemed like the focus was always just over the shoulder of the person I was trying to catch. More diligent technique helps... But I'll confess to wondering about how a better AF system (more points, faster) would handle in this type of situation. Ah well. Maybe someday, I'll find out... until then, I'll be working on improving my end of the equation. Besides, no other system is any smaller or lighter, that's for sure. :) -c On Mon, Nov 26, 2012 at 12:42 PM, Don Guthrie shark50...@gmail.com wrote: Other than mulling whether turkeys can really trot, I think you are getting the hang of the lens. The sensor in the K5 is absolutely fantastic in low light. I have only shot a couple of video clips with it but it seems to perform similarly in video mode. Re: Question to those who have their web site hosted by GoDaddy
Reply interspersed. On 11/26/2012 2:09 AM, Igor Roshchin wrote: I suspect you are aware of everything what I've written below.. But I am surprised why you asked, so, maybe there is something new for you in this. You're right. I mean, I am aware of what you wrote below but still... I didn't have experience with GoDaddy's hosting per se, but I see your options as follows: 1. Use one of the existing dedicated photo-hosting services, such as Flickr, Smugmug, 500px.com, ... (BTW, 500px has a cyber monday special right now: https://500px.com/upgrade ) Personally, I would probably choose 500px, not sure at which paid level - depending on what is needed. The reason for that is that I just don't like flickr's own interface. I just looked up 500px license. Hmmm, if you ask me. Cons: If you read ToS for all such photo-hosting services cafefully, you'll find that you are giving them the rights to use your photos as they like (non-exclusive license to publish, ditribute and use the content). While it is clear that they need it to be able to display your photos that you choose to make public, by this clause you grant them much more. Some photographers are not comfortable with that. Besides, the photo-hosting can take your photos hostage (as it has been done recently by fotki.com) Right, fotki.com is a good example. In general I don't quite like the idea of posting my photos, and in case of Flickr integration to LR it is full size JPGs, elsewhere. I used to be ambivalent about it but since I got to know that at least one photo of mine has been lifted by that Italian hotel (thanks Dario for helping me take care of it) my mind changed. Obviously one may export small web size photos that later would be uploaded to Flickr or 500x or whatever but that's tiresome. Alternatively this guy has some interesting stuff though I did not really look into it yet: http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/flickr 2. Use a web-hosting/co-location/... (depending on the level desired) and upload your own static galleries like those created in LR, JAlbum, etc. (e.g. as Brian Walters does it for PUG). Pro: You own everything and have full access. Cons: Galleries are static. You have to regenerate/reupload them if you need to change something. You cannot have one photo appearing in several sets (without duplicated copy - for each set). I am currently using this route (when I have time to upload photos.. ooh) Well, I just paid for JAlbum (since ver 10.x they've gone shareware) license. The good thing about JAlbum (if you did not know) is that you can set up a folder structure (see on my web site) and have all your pictures taken care of together. Additionally, when you add new picture(s), JAlbum is smart enough to upload only what has changed. It won't upload everything. Therefore, with exception of very initial upload, it is actually quite fast. I plan to dig further into JAlbum and may be I will just use it for my content management. There is another side benefit of going this route. Without any effort whatsoever you get all your web content backed up so that if things go sour, you can easily migrate to another hosting, location, service provider, etc. 3. Advanced webhosting/co-location VM/server/... ..with a Content Management software that essentially duplicates the photo-hosting websites. I don't know if such software exists (at the level comparable to that of Flickr, not just primitive homegrown javascript/php/... scripts). If you find such software, please let me know. I looked up CMSes on google and it is pain in the neck. If you want something serious (not based on great many files throughout the file system) it has to be DB based and it means significantly more administration thank dragging and dropping in JAlbum and waiting for it to upload. Purely theoretically there may be some PCMSes (personal content management systems) or there might be a potential for some open source project here. Re: WTB 300mm reflex (mirror) lens
There was a Makinon 300mm reflex, f5.6 as I recall. I almost bought one second hand around 1990 and got as far as taking some test shots in the shop which were impressive. Alas, another purchase took precedence and I let it pass. It'd be quite old now but if you found a clean example (refexes are a bit susceptible to fungus in my experience) it would be worth a look. It's compactness is amazing, it is hardly bigger than a 50mm lens, probably smaller than a Canon 50mm lens. Here's a link to some comments about it: http://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/makinon-300mm-f5-6-mirror-lens.html Apparently there's a fair bit a of quality variation from sample to sample, but you shouldn't pay much for one so it could be worth the risk. FWIW, I was at first disappointed with my Tamron SP500 reflex that I got in 1988, but it sharpened considerably after I put a good UV filter up front, the only lens I've had that result from (every other lens takes a tiny hit in sharpness when you use a UV filter). regards, Anthony On 27 November 2012 13:25, Miserere miser...@gmail.com wrote: Sorry, I only have a 400mm for sale.
