PESO blue piano player

2012-12-13 Thread Larry Colen
Went to SF last night to catch a show by Johnny Boyd, who was the lead singer
for one of my favorite swing bands about 15 years ago (Indigo Swing). Of
course I brought my camera. There were three other people shooting with DSLRs,
so I didn't spend much time taking pictures, though I did get a few good ones.
Mostly with the 80-200. An autofocus version of that lens would be rather
handy, I lost a lot of my photos to sloppy focus.

I think that my favorite shot of the evening is this one of the piano player:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8268403231/

Though I also really like this shot of a couple members of Stompy Jones, who
opened the show:

For them that are interested, the set of 18 is at:

Well, "street photography" in the sense of

Thanks for commenting, Don!

Balda made quite a lot of nice, compact cameras once upon a time, but
that time was now quite long ago. I first heard of their cameras about
a decade and a half ago from a good friend who enjoyed them.

Well, first off the very compact nature of the camera when folded
makes it a pleasure to slip in my jacket pocket or a small bag when I
go for a walk. Combine that with a natural, wide-normal field of view
and the kind of focus zone control you can only get with a big
negative format (6x6cm in this case), and the "softly sharp" qualities
of the Baltar three-element lens.

It's simply a pleasantly unsophisticated camera to shoot with at a
leisurely pace, and I like the rendering that this lens and 6x6 film
produces. It's never going to compete on the nanoparticle resolution
scale of modern cameras and lenses ...;-) ... but I'm moving away
from that aesthetic vogue in recent times.

In this exposure, I was shooting in the bright, heavily overcast
morning light, which spread soft flare across the frame. I set the
focus and aperture to slightly blur infinity by 'shorting' the
hyperfocal a little bit, looking for the geometry and flare to meld
together into a cool, winter morning feel with that sinuous path
drawing you towards the light.

I've got a few more shots from this roll (about 7 out of 12 exposures
seem worth a second glance, maybe one or two more will make the cut
for posting) ... I like this pace in photography. 12 exposures a week,
whether I need them or not.;-)

I think you already have. From a mathematical standpoint I have difficulty
seeing how this is in any way different from simple image size reduction (with
a suitable filter kernel).

You can't really make use of signals sampled above the Nyquist limit for the
final image without risking aliasing.

After reading about this some time ago, I did procure a couple good
quality 77mm polarizer filters (on circular and one linear) from off
ebay for a total of $40. Somebody couldn't get them apart and sold
them that way, as a set. (Wasn't that tough to get them apart.) Have
not done any experiments with them myself yet, however.

I expect that normal downsizing is usually with some sort of boxcar filter,
where the data is simply averaged, rather than analyzed for anomalous spikes
and such.

It's usually a bit more sophisticated than that - even PS Elements, for
example, offers a BiCubic smoothing filter.

But you miss my main point. Analysing spikes that are lesss than a
(re-sampled) output pixel in spread is using data that has a higher spatial
frequency than the Nyquist limit for the re-sampled data. You generally don't
want to do that.

Tom, it is always useful and refreshing to hear a contrarian view from an

OT: Any thoughts on what might cause this?

2012-12-13 Thread John Sessoms

This is the computer I use for goofing off on the internet. WindozeXP SP3.

Sometimes this computer will just freeze. Whatever is on the display at
that time will continue. Mouse pointer won't move. If there's something
coming from the speakers it will stutter continuously until power is
shut off. It does this at rare random times.

I turn the speakers off and do a hard power off to reboot. The windoze
start-up sound is too loud, so I keep the speakers off any time I
reboot. The windoze volume control doesn't become active until after the
start-up wave plays.

I thought it might be a defect in the memory, but I recently replaced
the memory. I removed the existing 1GB DDR2 667 to install 2GB DDR2 800.
DDR2 667 was no longer available. When I last rebuilt this system DDR2
667 was the most expensive memory available & when I upgraded memory a
couple of weeks ago DDR2 800 was the least expensive memory.

One thing I have noticed - when I upgraded the hard-drive a year or so
ago, I got a local computer shop to clone my old drive onto the new
drive & expand the volume to fit ... which left me with a 200GB FAT32
volume. I tried converting to NTFS, but it failed.

I had some other problems and it wasn't until earlier this summer I
finally figured out how to get SP3 to install. Don't remember the whole
thing now, but one of the precursor patches wouldn't install because of
an invalid registry entry for the keyboard. Once I corrected that, the
precursor patch installed and then SP3 would install.

Once SP3 installed, the NTFS conversion worked as well.

And what I noticed is that on the old FAT32 volume it would run CHKDSK
every time it started from a hard reboot. With the NTFS volume, it
doesn't. No log file is generated. It's not a BSOD, so there's no memory
dump.

The power supply is reasonably new & I put a new, more powerful cooler
fan on the CPU the last time I replaced the power supply.

What else should I look at?

RE: Any thoughts on what might cause this?

2012-12-13 Thread Bob W
I had similar problems with a Dell laptop that I used to use and I never
found out the cause. It started with some problems on the sound card, and
issues with the fan and overheating. I think the issue was that Windows just
became too fat for the machine to support. I did several re-installs, and
maxed the memory, stripped everything back to basics (as far as that's
possible with Windows and consistent with running something useful and
secure).

It was an old machine so I gave up and bought a new machine with Win7 -
life's too short. I use the old one occasionally for playing with other
operating systems. It currently has Minix on, and someday I'll play about
with it.

How is it obsolete? I don't think they stop working when another camera

I have spent some time with the 645D. It will take more than a 36mp
small format camera to make the 645D obsolete.

But, one would have to use both to know this.
I have.

Not only are the people essential to this, but it's great how the
seated ones are well lit.

I see no need to play with warping it at all.

Does anyone use Jeffrey Friedl's LR plugins?

2012-12-13 Thread Gerrit Visser
Specifically folder-status and folder-publisher?

I am trying to prepare for a 90+ day photo shoot and I think I might need
some help in reminding myself what I have and haven't done to my (and my
wife's ) DNG/PEF's. Also to have a folder structure parallel to the 'real'
stuff for blog quality photos. It seems that these 2 plugins would fit the
bill.

Not intending to butt heads with you Bill. It's obviously not
obsolete, but it loses a degree of relevance. If one can arguably get
a camera that's quite close in resolution and other performance
factors, with a huge lens catalog to choose from. for about 1/3 the
price...

I looked yesterday and cannot remember the figures, but the DxO
scores were fairly close between the aforementioned bodies (one troll
to another).

Re: What's wrong with the K-01

2012-12-13 Thread Anthony Farr
Answering my own message because I'm addressing a raft of issues from
various correspondents in this thread and reaching back through the
life of the K-01. I don't want to single out anyone, it's a
collective thang.

A Google image search for "toilet suite" will find a lot of square
and rectangular toilets. I've been seeing them (and using them) for
years now, if people got out more they'd be less amazed by the
concept. Or was it an opportunity to infer that Marc Newson is a
shithouse designer because he designed a toilet? In fact he designed
an entire bathroom range, it'd be a serious omission if a toilet suite
wasn't a part of it.

I think the attitude to the K-01 is one of "Get your stinking paws off
Pentax, you damn dirty foreign designer". How many times does it need
to be said that the form factor and the feature list of the K-01 were
Pentax's decisions, not Marc Newson's. Once again, the form factor
and the feature list of the K-01 were Pentax's decisions, not Marc
Newson's. For the hard of hearing I'll repeat it, the form factor and
the feature list of the K-01 were Pentax's decisions, not Marc
Newson's. And for the visually impaired, T H E F O R M F A C T
O R A N D T H E F E A T U R E L I S T O F T H E K - 0 1
 W E R E P E N T A X ' S D E C I S I O N S , N O T M A R C N
E W S O N ' S .

Is the K-01 any squarer than an LX? You'd think it was a cinderblock
from the gripes I've read. For the record it's 22.5mm narrower,
11.5mm shorter, 8mm thicker and 4g lighter than a gripless LX. And
the LX was praised for it's feel in the hand. And, by the way, the
next time anyone complains of the K-01's thickness, consider that it
will do screwdriver AF with any K-AF lens since Pentax made AF lenses.
An mount adapter won't give that, the body needed screwdriver AF to
ensure backwards AF compatibility. A short mount would only have been
AF-adaptable to SDM lenses, and AFAIK no-one has ever produced a mount
adapter with an integrated AF motor.

If Pentax had taken the short mount plus adapter route we'd still be
hearing the squealing and whining and moaning today, even from people
who wouldn't buy a K-01 anyway.

There's the rub, the biggest complaints appear to be coming from
people who were the most unlikely to ever buy one. OTOH I've read
some reports from people who bought a K-01 and seem to be OK with
their choice.

Over the years I've observed that single-lens-reflex purists are the
most uncompromising group of photographers around, with respect to
their acceptance of any other type of viewfinder (or no viewfinder).
For them I suggest a future PUG theme, "No Viewfinders Allowed - A
Gallery of From-the-Hip and Overhead Shooting". I'd also suggest that
enough is enough, we know how you feel about optical frame 'finders
and wire frame 'finders and live-view-on-the LCD 'finders and no
'finders. Just don't buy them and see if I care.

Finally, pardon my grumpiness. I have prostate cancer, and last week
underwent a brachytherapy implant after a year of hormone blockers. I
still hurt (a cough or sneeze is unbearable), have no endurance, scant
tolerance, and I have to carry a sieve and a lead container everywhere
in case a radioactive pellet gets loose when I pee. Have a nice day.

regards, Anthony
