RE: how dark was it really? calculating with ISO, shutter speed, and aperture

2012-12-16 Thread Bob W
From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Charles Robinson

I was in a park in Nevada (Valley of Fire), the sun was setting, it was
getting difficult to see. I took some photos which came out OK - and
due to the ability to tweak white balance, exposure, etc, it looks like
the photos were taken at a regular time of day.

But I was there, and I KNOW it was dark dark dark.

Is there some sort of exposure equivalence table which can tell me
how dark it really was when I had to expose a frame at ISO 1250,
 1/13th of a second, at f/4.0?

 (link below if you care)

 http://charles.robinsontwins.org/photos/2012/vegas/content/IMGP5607_lar
 ge.html

You can find the exposure value (EV) for the particular iso, shutter speed
and aperture that you used, but that only tells you how dark the meter
thought it was. Without a reference value you're going to have to rely on
your memory, and adjust the output by eye. Knowing the EV of the exposure is
not going to help.

It seems to me that your problem is the way you metered the scene.

If you use a reflective light reading then the meter will assume that you're
pointing it at a mid-grey scene and expose accordingly. If you then process
it on auto settings you'll get a picture that's mid-grey in tone.

To bring it back to what you know it to be, you either have to adjust it by
eye, for example by deciding that it was 3 stops darker than the meter
indicated, or you can include a reference object in one of the exposures,
such as a calibrated grey card or colour target; you can then process that
frame so that the target comes out with its calibrated values - all the
other values fall into place around it; after that you should be able to
synchronise the settings across all the frames that you shot without the
target, but in the same light.

You could instead use an incident meter, which will give you a reading for
the light that's falling onto the meter's sensor through a mid-tone dome. If
you then process it on auto settings you should get a picture that shows the
conditions as you saw them, more or less.

When I say 'auto settings' I'm thinking of a fixed reference post-process -
something like Kodachrome, where you sent it away to be processed and,
unless you'd given special instructions to the contrary, they put everything
through the same process at the same time - in other words you had a
reference standard at the processing time.

Now that KR is dead and we are all using a series of Giant Electronic Brains
to take bake our chefs d'oeuvre, the notion of 'auto settings' has become
more difficult, and I don't have such a process myself for Lightroom,
although I could probably come up with something if I sat down and thought
about it for long enough. As far as I understand it, pressing Auto in LR
makes it come up with an average mid-tone across the frame. This is very
useful for rescuing something that's gone horribly wrong, or which was in
any case a mid-tone exposure, but in a situation like yours it would just
turn night into day.

So unless someone here replies with a KR-like reference process, you're left
with either including a reference target in one frame, or/and adjusting by
eye.

Hope that helps. But it probably doesn't.

RE: Two low light PESOs

2012-12-16 Thread Bob W
Hi Boris,

the second one is the stronger of the 2. Both nicely composed and exposed,
but the second has a less cliched subject matter. The second one feels
slightly hemmed in by the frame, as if you've struggled a bit to squeeze it
in. I like the idea of the triangular composition, but it feels a bit
strained. Perhaps if you'd done without the lounger (?) on the right, and
given the gazebo a bit more breathing space it could have conveyed what I
think you were after (the light, the moon, the clouds etc.) slightly better.
Still a jolly good shot though.

Oh, yeah.

I fixed all those the last time I replaced the power supply. They were

I think I built it in 2001, but it might be older than that. The 30GB
HDD I replaced last year has a label Manuf:25APR2001. I don't remember
if that's actually the original HDD. I've got a stack of old drives
ranging in size from 850MB to 6GB, and one of those might have been the
original.

The only thing that hasn't been replaced is the case the floppy drive.
The floppy drive is not connected any more. It stopped working I
couldn't find a replacement. The only floppy drives available are
external USB, so I just took the cables out.

It's on at least its 3rd mother-board, 4th or 5th power supply, 2nd
video card, 2nd sound card ...

Thinking about it, it used to freeze up a couple of times every week,
and now it only seems to freeze about once or twice a month.

Re: FS: Two Sigma 24mm f/2.8 Super-Wide II lenses (one AF, one MF)

2012-12-16 Thread Boris Liberman
I was once given the AF version of this lens to shoot for few days. It
was extremely good. The only problem was rather weak flare resistance.
It was easily as sharp as k24/2.8 that I had at the time. Color
rendition was slightly different but not bad at all. Later I was
interested and discovered that Leica was involved in design of this lens.

Anyway - it is one of the few third party lenses that I absolutely
would not hesitate to use .

I owned the manual focus version of this lens for quite some time and
liked it for its good IQ and small size. I also enjoyed its close-up
capabilities; not a macro, but it focused closer than just about any
other 24mm (or 28mm) I've come across. When I look back at my photos
with it, most of them tended to be close-ups. A couple of examples I
have handy:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/miserere/2475111567/in/photostream

http://www.flickr.com/photos/miserere/2455156403/in/photostream

I sought the AF version for a long time but the few times I saw it for
sale it went for far more than I would pay for it (on eBay). I
would've gladly paid $135! But alas, Joe, you are a few years too late
 :-)

For the book of anecdotes, I remember not being able to use the focus
confirmation on my K10D with this lens when manual focusing because it
would consistently miss focus (either back or front, I can't remember
which, but always the same).

Good luck with your sale!

Cheers,

The AF lens seems to need a -1.0 EF adjustment on most Pentax digital
bodies; the MF lens needs -1.3 EF or so (this seems to be typical of
Sigma lenses from the film era on current Pentax bodies?)

These are nice compact prime lenses and the AF version is not
something Pentax has ever had in its own lineup (only the very large
and expensive 24mm f/2.0).

See a decent selection of comments and reviews on these two lenses here:

 http://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/sigma-24mm-f2-8-af-super-wide-ii.html

 http://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/sigma-24mm-f2-8-super-wide-ii.html

Both are multicoated, have 52mm filter threads and I believe I have
two copies of the clip-on Sigma perfect hoods that go with them.

The AF lens focuses in the correct Pentax direction; the MF lens is
opposite. F-stop ring is the correct Pentax direction on both lenses.
They both focus down to 0/6 ft./0.18 m.

Asking $135 for the AF lens, $85 for the MF.

Can't tell you about Canada, in the US it really depends on your ISP

the end of that period.

Went to SF last night to catch a show by Johnny Boyd, who was the lead singer
for one of my favorite swing bands about 15 years ago (Indigo Swing). Of
course I brought my camera. There were three other people shooting with DSLRs,
so I didn't spend much time taking pictures, though I did get a few good ones.
Mostly with the 80-200. An autofocus version of that lens would be rather
handy, I lost a lot of my photos to sloppy focus.

I think that my favorite shot of the evening is this one of the piano player:

Though I also really like this shot of a couple members of Stompy Jones, who
opened the show:

J.C.O. is entirely right. Once superseded by another model, the 645D will stop
taking pictures on any ISO other than 140, force JPG format, and introduce a
lag of 30 seconds before writing exposures to card. During that lag, you will
see a message on the chimp screen explaining what you have to do to re-enable
the camera's functionality. For unknown reasons, this message will only appear
in the language used by the Inuits of North-East Greenland, who refuse to
translate because they find the text offensive.

The next model will be a lot better. Among its most important achievents will
be abandoning the hopelessly inaccurate way of relaying aperture information
between camera and optics using a simple lever. According to Pentax officials,
that's on par with steam engines for obsolence, and they are deeply ashamed
about it still being there, despite their best efforts to move forward.

Just FYI, you know, like, :-)

Jostein

OT: Something to think about

2012-12-16 Thread Paul Stenquist
With the Holidays upon us I would like to share a personal experience with my
friends on the list about drinking and driving.
As you may know some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities
from time to time on the way home after a night out with friends.
Well, two days ago I was at a car company Christmas party and had several
cocktails followed by some rather nice red wine. Most of the bottle, I believe.
Feeling jolly, I still had the sense to know that I may be slightly over the
limit. That's when I did something that I've never done before - I took a cab
home.

Sure enough on the way home there was a police road block, but since it was a
cab they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident.

This was a real surprise as I had never driven a cab before, I don't know where
I got it and now that it's in my garage I don't know what to do with it.

(and camera body)? (maybe listed already)

Just today I was wondering, why a 55mm lens as opposed to a standard

technical rationale or design constraints were for a 50 vs. 5 extra

Wow. Wasn't expecting the response.

Thanks, Ann, Jack, frank, Christine, Cotty, Dan, Gerrit, Paul, Bob, Peter,
Paul, Bruce, and et. all for looking and commenting.

It's kind of ironic. I am putting together a hand-done calendar for
friends (a couple) and I've been going through photos for varied shots of
Northern California. (I gave them one two years ago which they loved.) I've
mainly
been using 2011-2012 shots, but didn't have enough and started looking at
2010 shots.

These upward looking shots in my Praire Creek Folder, I had skimmed by
previously, knowing it was a cliched shot. I was looking more at the bases of
trees and other shots the first time around. But this time, going through a
second time, with fresh eyes, I thought, you know that's not so bad.

Just goes to prove maybe it's worth taking a second look later sometimes.
Maybe years later. ;-)

BTW, because of this group, the peppers and the blue car have made the cut
for the calendar. Heh.

Thanks, guys and gals. Marnie :-) I love shooting Redwoods, but as lots
of you have stated it is hard to do.
Yes. I have vertical shots too, but I like the horizontal ones because
it's a littlebit anti-cliche cliche. Heh. Thanks again.

I like the high contrast and, also, feel more comfortable with it as a
