Re: Windows 8 is Horseshit.
Speaking of Horseshit, I have another nomination. I'm staying in a Hilton hotel tonight. As an HH Honors member they seemed to offer free internet. (Most every motel on the interstate highway offers free internet.) On closer inspection, not really free at Hilton. No problem says I, the alternative is free to ATT customers. So I try that option, not quite. We need your ATT address and password. That I don't really remember, but with a cell phone call they help me with my address. Can't do anything about the password though. Have to call this other number for that. So I call. While a black man with poor English was helpful on the first call, the oriental woman on the second call was unbelievable! First, she has an unintelliginle accent - very poor Engllish language pronounciation. Second, she's talking so fast, I can't make out what she is saying. (And I've got a pretty good ear for it after my share of 3 hour conf calls to China.) Third, everything she says is clipped. It is being dropped by the cellphone connection. And fourth and most infuriating, she isn't listening! I say something and she launches into a 25 second sing-song monologue. I talk over her, but she just continues to speak.. I tell her to listen, but she doesn't. I tell her she is not conversing with me. I tell her I can't understand what she is saying. I tell her she has poor language skills. She continues to ask me about irrelevant questions. I finally give up and just start guessing at my password. I make a good guess and get signed on, after 30 minutes of horseshit. ATT blows dead bears. Now how do I get ATT to hear this? Regards, Bob S. Despite my general feelings about AA filters, that sample image is very nice indeed. I don't think I've ever gone above ISO 12800 on my K-5, and I try very hard not to go above 6400, so I don't think this is a meaningful limitation. I wonder what the Canon 7D's successor will look like. I read a recent quote from a Canon rep that seemed to question the future of crop sensor DSLRs. Re: Hands-on with 560mm :-)
Zos, The shots I made were not well executed enough to base a qualified opinion on, I'm afraid. But the first impression was definately positive. It's big, but not terribly heavy, and handles pretty well for its size, I think. If I didn't have a long lens, it would be a serious contender. Bloody lot of money, but serious nonetheless. On the other hand I don't think I'll trade my Sigma for it now. The half stop brighter viewfinder counts for something, as does the lower weight and easier handling. It's worse than the cameras just not being twins: the Fuji X-E1 doesn't have a traditional Bayer filter pattern (which may be related to the large false color patches). So I agree that it could have been done better, and that the tone is a bit over the top. But I thought it was a useful piece because it makes the point that the extra detail that you get without an AA filter doesn't come for free; even if there is no visible moire there is still aliasing. I haven't seen that point made elsewhere on the photo interwebs. In this test target image, there is lots of extra "detail" inside the region of obvious color artifacts, but this detail is clearly not real. http://www.martin-doppelbauer.de/foto/tippstricks/aliasfilter/files/stacks_image_5430.png We know what the test target looks like, and the lines are not curved as they appear here. This sort of thing will be a general feature of aliased sampling, though the details may change depending on, well, the details. If one wants to make this tradeoff, that's fine with me. Personally, I dislike image artifacts more than I desire increased detail, so I would prefer not to see the industry go toward cameras without AA filters being the default as with the D7100. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

What I didn't see was a huge advantage over what I'm using now (Win7) What I don't understand is why changing the OS means changing the user interface. In the case of Win 8, the opening screen is the start screen, much like on a tablet. If you hit the start button on a regular MS OS, and it gave you a screen instead of a pop up, the start screen is what it would give you. One of the "Apps" is the desktop. I suspect that app doesn't come on tablets. One can remove all the apps from the start screen except the ones that are used, any programs you install will show up as an icon on the start screen. It's easy enough, but for me, they could have left that screen off on the computer versions of the OS. The UI/windows manager/shell is just another program on top of the OS. Microsoft is trying to make a UI that will work on both tablets and desktops. What it will get is something that doesn't work well on either. My guess is it will work very well on tablets. It wasn't that much off my Android for usability, and for people who carry a tablet and have a laptop at home, I expect the familiarity that Win8 brings from the tablet to the PC will make it easier for tablet users. Re: PESO: Breaching Whale
I think I do, Larry. I took hundreds of exposures this afternoon, and did a "quick and dirty" clean-up of this one in PS a few minutes ago, just to get an idea of what was there. As you can see, the weather was not ideal. There were heavy rains this afternoon throughout Hawaii, although almost none where we are staying, in the rain shadow of the 10, 023 foot volcano northeast of here, Haleakala. During our whale watch on the Pacific this afternoon, it was cloudy and drizzling from time to time. The whales were quite active, but the catamaran was bouncing around quite a bit in the gusty seas, and the backgrounds, as you can see, were rather drab. That being said, I am very happy with this image, and I will try to improve it a bit more. Thanks very much for you comments on cropping the image, which I think are very helpful.
