I've missed why it's called the "bokina" - could someone please explain?

I think you'd be very happy with either lens for macro work. The FA is very
good and using the focus limiter it makes a good all-purpose 100mm as well.
But the bokina certainly looks prettier.

I bought an asus transformer

2013-02-27 Thread Larry Colen

Been wrestling with mail server problems, my apologies if this is a repeat

After many false starts, and back and forths, I picked up a tablet yesterday.

I ended up with an ASUS 32G TF300T transformer, with the dock/keypad from
Fry's, and they matched the adorama price of $420. While I thought I was
getting the dock without a battery, it turned out that it did indeed have
a battery in it.

the downside versus the Nexus 10 is that it has about half the resolution
of the Nexus 10 at a bit less than the cost of the 16G unit, though it has
the same as the Nexus 7 on a screen with twice the area.

On the upside, this kit has 32G of internal storage, a micro SD slot in
the tablet, an SD slot in the dock, an HDMI port, a USB port in the dock,
A real keyboard, that can be removed, but which can protect the screen
when it's on. Last night I was running it with 32G of internal flash, a
micro SD in the tablet and a full sized SD in the keypad. I don't know if
that means I can boost it to 96G storage or 160G (with 64GB cards).

It's a bit more than I was looking to spend, but I think I'll be happy
with it.

the other downside for me is that it isn't immediately trivially easy to
transfer files from a linux box to it, using MTP or PTP. But that is true
for any Android v4 tablet.

I haven't yet investigated raw converters for it either.

Last night when I was using it in laptop configuration, I was surprised to
find out convenient I found the touch screen to use, rather than the mouse
for some tasks. This from a guy who felt that X-windows worked best as a
way to run multiple text consoles simultaneously.

Every so often I buy a toy that ends up being even cooler than I expected,
this is definitely one of those times. The keyboard is a bit cramped, but
when you look at the specs on this unit, not very long ago it would have
been a very nice desktop machine. It's definitely one of those moments
where I wonder where my flying car is, because it is obviously the twenty
first century.

I am not sure, but I think it's because there is a hotmail cookie on your

But I am always looking for something better to store pictures on. Any

2013-02-27 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks for looking and commenting, Ken.

I see what you mean, but is it over or under?

I pretty much got what I was looking to capture. It's not meant as a
portrait, so I didn't really want to make the women identifiable.
Neither was it meant as a swimsuit calendar shot. I was looking to
show the subjects' feeling of exhaustion after a long day of soaking
up rays. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it.

That's exactly what I'd suggest.

I saw a couple of photographers at a sporting event a few weeks back. They
were stationed on either side of the finish line getting photos of every
competitor coming through. Every time somebody came through they'd get

PESO: Monopoly

A life-sized Monopoly square. I was in the area today and wandered down to
take a cellphone pic. I may have seen it before but I don't remember if I
photographed it and showed it here.

I don't have the game on-hand to check what that square costs to land on with

It was created by the Gap Filler project and was very popular at the time.

Re: Two small Q Gesos

2013-02-27 Thread Mark C
I like the first banana shot (great light on that) and the bike in the
snow. The cafe' (?) shots are good as well and I tend to like the color
ones better for some reason. The 28mm was equivalent to ~150mm on a
standard 35mm frame. It seems to have captured a lot of detail in all
the shots. The deep depth of field is apparent in the cafe shots, but
not objectionable to me.

Re: Photo-shoot coming up

2013-02-27 Thread Bruce Walker
Walt, don't concern yourself with this now, but file it away to think
about after this shoot.

Shooting in your bar area is very likely going to have you beginning
to appreciate why additional lighting is often really useful in
creative portraiture. You'd like to highlight your subject--after all,
she's the point of the shot--but you don't want to lose the context
(the bar surroundings). So you really want to literally spotlight your
subject in a way that doesn't overwhelm the subtle bar downlights and
undercounter accent lights, plus colourful reflections from glassware
and all.

A good way to do that is to setup a small flash source, like a small
softbox, to one side of your subject casting a pool of light centered
on her face. With camera on manual you set the aperture to expose for
her face, then set the shutter speed to expose for the background
illumination, but about 1 stop less than for the face.

A very different way to get almost the same effect is point a
colour-corrected LED array (preferably with extra diffusion) at your
subject's face and increase the brightness until her face is slightly
brighter than her surroundings (approx a stop). Then expose for her
face and shoot. The LED approach will require much higher ISOs or
wider apertures and she may have to hold still to avoid motion blur.

You've probably seen this one before, something similar that I did in
a restaurant bar with crappy light:

Nice Walt, I'm with you, even with vapor trails and less than
desirable scenery in the foreground when I see a nice sunset I will
make a shot, I might not show it to anyone else but it's still nice to

As someone who's had two different book contracts, finishing only one of
them (both for the Python programming language), my solution was to find
a reliable co-author. That made it much easier to do my fair share of
the work. (Of course, living with my co-author was ... interesting.)

Although cropped square from the Leica M9 2x3 frame, there is only a
little bit of wiggle room on the right and left for the kind of change
you are suggesting. Other bits appear when you do it that are more
distracting. (They're less distracting if I go another way entirely
and format the image to 16:9 proportions, but then the feel of the
image is completely different too. ;-)

I'll fool with it some. Thanks for the edit suggestion.

Re: Writing is hard

You have my deepest sympathies.

I go through horrible bouts of writer's block, having once gone well
over a year without writing anything more involved than an email.

I have horrible discipline and hangups galore. For the first couple of
years using a computer regularly, I still wrote everything out in
longhand before typing it out in a word processor. I edit on the fly,
and don't proofread. I am, in short, a complete basket case when it

I just personally would prefer something closer to a true normal focal
length, which doesn't seem too much to ask given that Pentax has made
many 28mm lenses over the years.

35mm is equivalent to 52.5mm on film, which is even longer than 50mm,
which (as I understand it, though I don't know where I read it and
would appreciate it if anybody can point me to a more
detailed/documented account) became the default lens on film because
in the early days it was lot easier/cheaper to make fast 50mm lenses
than something closer to the true film diagonal (= 43mm, as in the FA
43mm Limited).

Since prime lenses are one of the unique strengths of the Pentax
system, it surprises me that they don't make a 28mm. Heck, I'd be
happy if they just kept the FA 28mm in production like the FA 50mm
(which I have and love). The 31mm Ltd is close enough, I just can't
afford it.

i've got one and enjoy using it a lot, second only to my A 50/1.7; i like the
field of view; it is reasonable to manual focus, but not sweet; it was a
thrift-store find and has a slight defect in the front coating at the extreme
edges, but that doesn't seem to matter on APS-C sensor; it is so compact, i
have come to usually carry it and the 50 in my bag (though i'm lately carry a

a pretty girl in a skimpy bathing suit standing in front of that vile belly
would improve it enormously, believe me.

Nice! I like the second one better, first one seems a bit busy. (Not
that there's anything wrong with busy, but my eye doesn't seem to know
where to go in the first picture.)

What about the 35/2.8 macro? That's a nice lens -- I used it last week.
(Although I ended up deciding as a result of my field test that I really
wanted the 100mm macro.)

Re: PESO 2013 - 025, 026 - GDG

2013-02-27 Thread kwaller

Great subjects, nice execution.

The first image needs either a little more room from trunk to RH edge or
needs the space from trunk to RH edge totally eliminated. As presented this
space creates tension which draws my to the RH edge.

doesn't cost as much as the FA 31mm (you know, like the FA 28mm or

I've got the "A" which I think is the same optical formula.

I'd rate it "fine". Not as nice (although wider) as the DA35 f/2.4 though, in
my experience.

How good a lens is the FA 28/2.8?

If it's good, it might make it a goal. I could use a wider-angle AF

I'll definitely check the histogram from time to time and will probably

This is something I saw today, anyone tried it?

http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/white-balance-lens-cap/

I've got the ExpoDisc version and rarely use it.

I mainly just leave the camera's white balance on Sunny & stick a grey
card and/or an old Macbeth Color Checker into the frame occasionally,
since I'm going to adjust white balance in Camera Raw anyway. I am
shooting RAW.

I'm working on the theory that white balance is always wrong, but if you
settle on one it's always wrong by the same amount & in the same
direction (for any specific light source/session) which makes fixing it
in Camera Raw easier.
