DA 18 - 135 mm anyone?

2013-05-06 Thread Ralf R. Radermacher
What's the general verdict on the DA 18-135 mm lens? Is it noticeably
better than the two kit zooms (18-55 and 50-200)?

I'be had a look at Pentax' own gallery and haven't found a single really
crisp and sharp image. Then again, I'm used to
prime lenses mostly. Am I expecting too much?

Re: DA 18 - 135 mm anyone?

2013-05-06 Thread Rob Studdert
I haven't owned the lens but I did own the Pentax SMC DA 18-55mm
f/3.5-5.6 AL WR which wasn't too impressive. I sold it not long after
I purchased it as I was never pleased with the resultant image
quality. The Photozone review of the lens accords with my experience
and their review of the DA 18-135 is somewhat worse than that again so
I wouldn't expect too much compared to primes.

Re: DA 18 - 135 mm anyone?

2013-05-06 Thread P.J. Alling
I did a bit of research a while ago on 18-135mm lenses and the general
consensus of results was that none were particularly good, they are
after all, in APS-C format, what the 28-200mm lens is to 35mm format.
The best was the Leica D Vario-Elmar 14-150mm which isn't really in the
same league, since it's more like a 28-300 on a 35mm system, but if
there was any reason to the a 43 system this is it. The next best is
Nikon's offering none of the of the other 18-135 lenses by /any/
manufacture seemed to be worth the money for even a used copy. I did
the research for a friend who wasn't happy with the results of her Canon
kit and wanted a convenient zoom for travel photography with good
results. I would really have liked to recommend that she get Pentax but
based on her lens criteria I couldn't, Pentax just didn't have the
goods. So she got a used lightly used D90 from KEH and a Nikon 18-135
which was a huge improvement over the Canon and the lenses she had been
using up to that point.

http://www.repiuk.nl/index.php/blog-mainmenu-97/242-first-snow

Quality is good to very good. It's not a prime. The corners are not
the best. As a walk around lens this lens is perfect. Nice colors,
pleasant bokeh, very quiet autofocus, WR etc. CA distortion and
vignetting is very visible but LR removes it 100%.

My only complaint is it doesn't have a zoom lock and it extends while walking.

DA 18 - 135 mm anyone?

2013-05-06 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello Ralf & Rob,my copy of the 18-135 WR is extremely sharp. It is
positively much much sharper than the 18-55 AL II or the WR lens - the
AL II came with my new K20D and I bought the WR brand new - both from
B&H.
Contrast and color on the 18-135 WR is far superior too.
I have attached links to casual photos taken at a recent get-to-gether
at our house - blown 100% from a 7 MB shot - with the Pentax 18-135 WR
on a K-5.
Note: I have used the primitive screen capture method after blowing up
the photo 100%. So may have lost a lot of sharpness
Also my laptop used for the screen capture is some (5) years old.
I can assure you photos will be much sharper and better on a test
subject with a tripod, which I plan to do tomorrow.
The K-5 with 18-135 WR was bought for CAD 1108 - CAD & USD almost at
par - from Henrys of Toronto this January.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/y2u0e14w64tl8u1/iWyqtCPDeS

https://www.dropbox.com/home/Public/18-135%20WR

Regards.

subjectivity of evaluations of photos

2013-05-06 Thread Igor Roshchin

I thought I'd share this story.
Typically we all like our own photos more than other people do, but
here is the opposite case.

Yesterday, a friend of mine contacted me telling that she came across
one of my photos she hadn't seen before, and that she enjoyed it a lot:

In the followup exchange, she mentioned that it reminded her of these:
http://www.tangoartist.com/blogs/latest-news-from-dvora/291892-tango-calligraphy

The interesting thing is that I didn't quite remember about this photo
taken more than 4 years ago. Even at that time, I was not sure about it.
Obviously (?), it was not intended this way when I pressed the shutter
button. But it had rather abstract look that prevented me from deleting the
photo.
I am still not quite convinced, but if somebody enjoys it, - why should I
object?

Re: DA 18 - 135 mm anyone?

2013-05-06 Thread Zos Xavius
I too looked at a ton of samples and didn't see one all that sharp at
all. Not even in the center. Its supposed to get decent figures in the
center, but the borders are pretty awful, and all the pictures I saw
confirmed that. If you did events and shot people, it would be more
than ok. For landscapes and walkaround its not for me. I finally got a
16-45 and like it very much. Especially compared to the 18-55 mk 1 I
also have. I generally prefer primes, but the 12-24 and 16-45 I have
are both decent lenses. The 18-135 just doesn't do it for me. Now I
just need a 55-300 to complete my walk around zoom kit.

Hmmm...

Could it be that there are large quality variations among individual
lenses? There are a number of sources online pointing in that direction.
I've read of people exchanging theirs a few times before getting one

Most Pentax primes will be somewhat better than this 18-135 but it really is an
incredible
versatile lens with a huge zoom range, and focussing very fast compred to most
other lenses.

It is my favourite 'walk about' lens on my K5.

On hollidays it is ogten that lens and the BIGMA (50-500) that I have with me,
and 95 percent
of the shots will be from the 18-135.

Center sharpness is quite good, and so is contrast.
The corners are a bit behind, but not that much.

The 50--200 is not bead either, but it is certainly better than the 18-55 in my
opinion.

Several of my PUG entries of the last few years have been shot with it.

Perhaps, as said a prime will probably be a bit better but then you have one
focal length ...

Fotr me it is one of my best zooms (and I have almost a dozen :-)

Very nice Paul, sharp, great exposure and excellent contrast, not sure
my long Sigma zoom would manage as well in those circumstances.

Earlier this AM I had the best chance to date at a Red-winged blackbird. Never
completely pleased, I wish the black feathers had picked up a bit more shine in
their reflections.
I took three quick frames (AF-C). This was the first with the second and third

The tiny bit of catch-light in the eye was my good fortune.

It's probably not the best practice to provide opinions on a lens
based solely by looking at technical reviews and real world image
samples but, in the past, every time I have personally ignored such
data it's been proven accurate when I finally made a purchase. Like
you the 16-45 was my walk around (and only zoom lens) for some years,
aside from the sometimes irritating yellow/blue CA it's a great lens
and I produced many excellent images using it. I later bought the
18-55 WR as my go-to water resistant lens thinking it really couldn't
be as poor as the samples I saw but it was, so I now have no WR
lenses, way too much compromise in IQ for me. I only recently retired
my DA16-45 and have replaced it with a late Sigma 17-50/2.8 which
after 6 months of use has proved to be an excellent lens and great as
a walk about.

If it were me, I'd mess around with some post-processing to add some
shine. No doubt the tricky light conditions dulled his feathers on

RE: subjectivity of evaluations of photos

2013-05-06 Thread John Sessoms

I dunno. I've frequently found just the opposite to be true; that others
find my work a lot more pleasing than I do. It's one reason I post so
few PESOs.

I think we often look at our own images with an eye to all the things we
wanted to do and failed to accomplish, while others just see the things
we did.

From: Igor Roshchin

I thought I'd share this story.
Typically we all like our own photos more than other people do, but
here is the opposite case.

Yesterday, a friend of mine contacted me telling that she came across
one of my photos she hadn't seen before, and that she enjoyed it a lot:
http://42graphy.org/tango/dallas-2008-12-13/IMGP4909.html

In the followup exchange, she mentioned that it reminded her of these:
http://www.tangoartist.com/blogs/latest-news-from-dvora/291892-tango-calligraphy

The interesting thing is that I didn't quite remember about this photo
taken more than 4 years ago. Even at that time, I was not sure about it.
Obviously (?), it was not intended this way when I pressed the shutter
button. But it had rather abstract look that prevented me from deleting the
photo.
I am still not quite convinced, but if somebody enjoys it, - why should I
object?

I'd say that is an illustration worthy of an Audubon book. Well done!

While we're at it why don't we start discussions about abortion, gun control

For some reason helmets give rise to the same intensity of discussions among
cyclists (not just on this list btw).

As for me, don't care what any study says I like wearing them and will continue
to do so. Others can do what they want, don't so much care, as long as they're
adults it's their personal decision, I won't judge either way.

PESO: Worn Out

2013-05-06 Thread David Mann
Had a few spare moments to take the macro lens out into the garden this
afternoon.

http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/611/#peso

I've written a new gallery system and I'm using enough CSS3 that it'll probably
look like arse on many systems. If it's working you should see some rounded
corners and drop shadows, and a fancy font for the title (the comments beneath
are just Helvetica / Arial). The latest Firefox and Safari work well. IE8
does not (I don't have IE9). Chrome should be good.

Oh yeah and you'll need to allow javascript. That should weed a few more of
you out ;)

Cheers,
Dave

In general I agree with your attitude, except when it comes to public
liability. In our country, it is costing the public purse more for
unhelmeted riders who conk their noggins. If we had private insurance, I
would say it's between the rider and his insurance company, but in a
publicly funded system, the cards play a little differently.

Re: DA 18 - 135 mm anyone?

2013-05-06 Thread Bipin Gupta
Quote Rob: "I find that my recently purchased zooms are in many
respects almost as good as my Pentax primes when compared side by side
in controlled situations, not like the bad old days".

I concur with Rob. I have not bought a single prime, apart from the
older collection of M42, M, K & A lenses. I have quite a few new zoom
lenses - Pentax, Tamron and Sigma - some in the high quality f2.8
version.

I have the Pentax 18-135 WR, and as I mentioned earlier it is a very
sharp copy, with great contrast and colors. Quiet and excellent auto
focusing too. And any zoom will show some sharpness drop off at the
extreme ends.
But alas!, I wanted some detractors amongst us PDMLers, to comment on
two photos I posted on sharpness. Both blown up by 100%. Used
primitive screen shot to capture the image. Link given below again for
sharpness comment:-

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/y2u0e14w64tl8u1/iWyqtCPDeS

https://www.dropbox.com/home/Public/18-135%20WR

Note: a) 100% crops. Some sharpness again lost due to my primitive
screen capture method on my (5) year laptop.
 b) K-5 + 18-135 combo bought new from Henrys of Toronto
shipped for CAD 1108 in January 2013 - CAD &
 USD at par then.

I will be doing bench tests on edge to edge sharpness for the 18-135
using my famous beer bottle setup which I posted earlier for the
Tamron 28-75 f2.8 Lens - $ 457 from B&H brand new - which turned out
brutally sharp.

Regards.
Bipin - from that far away enchanting land.

Re: Qeustion for mirrorless shooters, using both eyes?

2013-05-06 Thread Tim Bray
My only mirrorless experience is the Fuji X-E1. If I hold it in front
of my face to use the LCD on the back, I use both eyes. If I hold the
EVF up to my (usually but not always) left eye, I use that one. The
EVF is not really ideal for seriously fast-moving sports, but works
for most everyday shots.

OT enablement

2013-05-06 Thread Larry Colen
I was visiting a friend tonight, and his wife had
mentioned having an old film nikon she no longer
used and wanted to give to me. Turns out it was
an FG. It also turns out that it has something wrong
with it. The mirror is stuck in the up position,
and the shutter won't cock.

However, it also came with an AIS mount Nikkor 50/1.8.
The one Nikon lens I was seriously missing was a fast
standard.

Even cooler, she also gave me a micro Nikkor 55/2.8
1:1 macro lens.

At this point, I can't help but wonder what a used
D7000 would go for.
